90s update for 30 September...

Another 90s update for the weekend, was planning a double update, but failed to get it done yesterday so I've combined both updates together. I capped Ali Larter's first movie Giving It Up last month and mentioned Varsity Blues being her second, but I'd never capped it, so it was about time I rectified that. Also underrated and forgotten from that movie is Amy Smart played van der Beek's girlfriend in that movie, completely forgotten that. Not her first movie though, she was a bunch before that including briefly in Starship Troopers. Varsity Blues absolutely baffles me coming from Australia, teenagers don't get treated like that here. The whole high school sports thing is completely foreign for someone who went to a public school. There's a little reverie in private schools, but nothing like what happens in America. Tonie Perensky plays a sex-ed teacher who moonlights as a stripper in Varsity Blues and she also turns up in another movie I capped in today's update, the 4th Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie, where she has a breasts flashing scene that's done by a double. Interesting... Starring a pre-fame Renée Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey, who is amped up to 11 in this movie, the movie plays more like a comedy than the usual tense movie, which leads to some very silly scenes, the one with the dualling remotes over McConaughey's mechanical leg is utterly ridiculous. Definitely a level or two below the first two Texas Chainsaw movies. And just quickly The Adjuster is very good movie from Canadian director Atom Egoyan, hadn't seen it since watching it on SBS back in the 90s when it got regular air play. More than a bit odd but also very intriguing. Early Egoyan (see Exotica and The Sweet Hereafter) is so much better than anything he's done post-2000, although I don't mind Where The Truth Lies.

Update for 27 September...

Fifty Shades Freed is the final in the series where Anastasia (Dakota Johnson) and Christian (Jamie Dornan) get married and live happily ever after. Well, that would be the case except that Anastasia's former boss Jack (Eric Johnson), who assaulted her previously, is still looking for revenge and keeps Christian's heavy security on its toes even after he attacks Anastasia in their home. Anastasia and Christian continue their elaborate sex lives but then becomes pregnant and this threatens to tear them apart with Christian very reluctant to have a child. Meanwhile, Jack gets bail and sets into plan his final revenge on Anastasia beginning with kidnapping Christian's sister Mia (Rita Ora). Thank fuck this mediocrity is done, not that this movie series is for men but at no stage did the Fifty Shades deliver anything above a super sexy soap opera. At least the first movie had the plot of the two getting together because the second and third movies have an incredibly contrived plot. This movie barely has a plot beyond all the stupid shit Jack gets away with and considering it's mentioned that Christian has incredibly elaborate and impenetrable security for himself and Anastasia every five minutes, it fails at least 3 or 4 times throughout the movie. Fifty Shades Freed is laughably bad, but at least it has plenty of sex and nudity, something nearly every other Hollywood blockbuster completely ignores or barely mentions.

Update for 25 September...

A couple of new movies featuring a couple of fairly well-known actresses, a rarity in these parts.

Some quick synopses: Red Sparrow is a spy thriller about a Russian ballet dancer (Jennifer Lawrence) who after having her career ended prematurely, is pushed by her uncle into a clandestine section of Russian intelligence called Sparrow School where women and men are taught to use sex as a weapon. The dancer's first mission is to get the name of a double agent who is making contact with an American spy (Joel Edgerton), but she falls for him and gets in too deep causing her life to be in risk. Adrift is a survival at sea drama where a young American woman (Shailene Woodley) looking for adventure meets a British man in Tahiti and falls for him. But during on sailing trip, they accidentally head into one of the biggest hurricanes ever recorded and miraculously survive although the British man is badly injured and they are drifting nowhere near land for what ends up being over 40 days. I thought both movies were quite good.

90s Update for 23 September...

The weekend 90s update unleashes another 4 movies.

Joyride is teen thriller where a pre-Spiderman Tobey Maguire plays a teenager who works at a motel where he meets a wannabe model-actress/actual prostitute (Amy Hathaway) who with Maguire's friend steal the car of one of the new tenants at the motel who just happens to be a hitwoman and there just happens to be a dead body in the boot. Nothing much to more than that happens in the movie that feels like one of those in between teen movies before Hollywood rediscovered teen sex comedies with American Pie, so Joyride is fairly tame. Also because it's a 90s movie, it must have a hitman character, in this case it's a woman. And check out those pasties over Amy Hathaway's nipples, huge, bigger than post-it notes.

I remember seeing the incest drama The War Zone in cinemas, possibly the most depressing film you're ever likely to see, I don't know why, probably because I'm such a joy factory. Plenty of nudity from Lara Belmont in her first movie and after a few appearances in British movies in the early 2000s, doesn't seem to be acting any more which is a shame. Also appearing in this movie is a pre-fame Colin Farrell in a blink and you'll miss role as Lara Belmont's boyfriend. And weirdly the second actress named Aisling I've capped this week, a name I've misspelt as 'Ainsling' before now. OK, that's just niche...

Never seen the director's cut of Payback before and it has a different tone which make the almost shot-for-shot of the first two acts feel different strangely enough. The entire final act is completely different, no Kris Kristofferson and his son and Porter (Mel Gibson) has a more life-threatening, open-ended fate. Enough of a change to feel almost like a different movie. I capped the director's cut as it doesn't have the blue filter the original is known for, although there's one scene that's slightly extended in the original.

Update for 20 September...

For today's update, a bunch of new movies where women are stuck in haunted houses and get raped by ghosts. Oh and finishing off an update featuring Mischa Barton.

I could go into the description of each movie but I would be repeating myself a bit so I'll quickly say The Sitter is about a college student (Aisling Knight) who minds a country house and the owner's cat for the weekend only for it to really be a ruse by the owners to sacrifice her to Satan. House On Elm Lake is about a couple moving to an old house where a devil worshipper killed his family and he's come back in the guise of the husband to cause more havoc. Within These Walls is about a woman who moves into her recently deceased mother's house but becomes trapped in the house by a spirit that killed her mother and is planning on possessing her daughter. None of the movies are all that good but there's some pretty decent nudity in at least two of those movies.

Update for 17 September...

3 new movies in today's update.

I was going to flick through Armed, but I watched the opening scene and it intrigued me, so I decided to watch the rest of the movie and well, the ridiculousness of the opening scene does not subside over the rest of the movie. Written, directed and starring Mario Van Peebles as a former security consultant who suffers from a sort of PTSD who is contacted by his old team who are suffering similarly. It looks like a conspiracy is afoot. Meanwhile, in all the commotion of the opening scene, he bumps into a British woman Grace (Jemma Dallender), a bit of an all-round free spirit, who helps temper his bad thoughts. Oh and there's a teenage girl missing, which is all over the news and will become a part of the story in a most unexpected way. Absolutely batshit crazy and completely unpredictable, I think it's an anti-gun movie of some sort, but the movie is never boring, one of the wildest movies I've seen in a while. Worth a look, but don't expect something, well, coherent.

MDMA is a story set in 1985 about a Chinese-American woman (Annie Q), who goes to an expensive New York University which she or her dad can't afford. With her well-off roommate (Francesca Eastwood), she enjoys the social life, but it's coming harder for her to afford college. She finds a way to pay for it by making MDMA in the school science lab and soon starts making money hand over fist. She also is a Big Sister for a young black girl with a drug addict mother. Of course she gets in over her head and something bad happens, bringing her world crumbling down. Same old story and despite some accurate fashion and music, the movie doesn't really feel like it's set in the 80s. There's also a concerted effort to make the drug dealer out to being a great person who's just caught in the bad situation. An OK attempt, but the movie seems to be missing something I can't quite put my finger on.

Driven is an absolutely terrible movie which I'm pretty sure is actually a web series, but it does have a lengthy nude scene from Olivia and it is the only redeeming feature of this garbage. Follow and Blood Fest are made by the same director are both horror movies, Follow about a man dealing very badly with the death of his girlfriend and Blood Fest is a horror comedy about a group of horror nerds who go the a horror film fan festival that turns into a real life horror movie that they must escape using the tropes of horror movies.

Update for 11 September...

Another couple of new movies today.

Bad Samaritan is a thriller about a photographer who works as a valet and with his friend robs the houses of people who give them their car to park. One such car leads the photographer to a swanky house where he finds a woman beaten and chained up. He tries to help her escape but needs to get the car back to the owner. It seems the owner is a serial killer and he finds out that the photographer has been in his house as is trying to get the woman out. But the serial killer is prepared for everything and goes about ruining the photographer's life and reputation while finishing off his plans for the chained up woman. Not bad thriller with some decent to-and-fro between the two protagonist but I swore this was an Irish/UK movie because the three leads are either Irish or Scottish, hell Robert Sheehan even plays an Irish immigrant, but it's an American movie made by one of the guys behind Independence Day.

Siberia is also a thriller about a diamond trader (Keanu Reeves) who gets stuck in Siberia looking for his partner who has disappeared, possibly with the diamonds he wants. When he gets out there, he gets into a fight with a couple of drunks and is helped out by a local bar owner (Ana Ularu) and they fall for one another. As the screws are tightened by a local buyer, the diamond trader tries to stall looking for the diamonds and continuing his affair. When he finds the diamonds, but not his partner, he is able to finalise the trade although there is one wrinkle in that plan that puts everyone in danger. OK movie, not a lot goes on throughout as the movie focuses more on the affair and the diamond trading plot seems more like something getting in the way of the affair and isn't all that intriguing anyway. Reeves and Ularu are quite good and about the only reason the watch the movie.

These were supposed to be brief synopses of the movies, oh I've failed again...

Update for 10 September...

3 new Spanish movies in today's update. Las Leyes de la Termodinámica is a strange romantic comedy about a scientist who is obsessed with the Laws of Thermodynamics and how they relate to everyday life including his relationship to a model/actress (Berta Vázquez). Sort of documentary like in structure but full of weird asides involving science. Hard to describe briefly, but very odd. Sin Rodeos is a comedy about a put-upon woman (Maribel Verdú) who takes a potion from a spiritual guide and begins to fight back against those who are treating her like a doormat. Very light comedy that isn't really that funny and the premise wears thin very quickly which is a shame considering it's made by Santiago Segura, who's usually worth a laugh even in the silly Torrente series. Hacerse Mayor y Otros Problemas is also a comedy about a woman (Silvia Alonso) who decides to grow up when she is given the responsibilty of being the guardian to her friend's daughter. Nothing special.

One more Australian HD redux update from stuff that I've been collecting and forgetting about until now. Bought a copy of Garage Days when it was cheap back on Australia Day, that seven months ago, so I've finally gotten around to it. I've seen that movie way too many times that I know stuff like it's Emma Lung's first movie, briefly appearing at the beginning of the movie. Same with Cut, seen it too many times and it doesn't get any better. I mean the killer is actually the killer from the original movie and the only way it can die is if you burn the print. Seriously... Jessica Napier was in a lot stuff in the late 90s and the 00s but haven't seen her in a while and wouldn't you know it, she turns up in the just aired episode of Bite Club. Weird coincidence. Monkey Puzzle is a long forgotten lost in wilderness thriller that I first capped almost 10 years ago to the day. Whatever, but then just in the last month, a 'new' movie turns up on US iTunes called Enter The Wild with a suspiciously familiar cast and plot and wouldn't you know it, it's the long forgotten Monkey Puzzle rebadged as a new movie. Baffling...

Another Australian HD redux, this time of the 1983 true story thriller Hostage: The Christine Maresch Story, a movie still not available on DVD or Bluray in Australia and this update is from the German Bluray. So the movie made the jump from VHS to Bluray with no DVD release. I capped this movie from a VHS rip back in 2011 and I've kept it up as while the quality isn't as good as from the Bluray but the fullscreen version shows a little bit more in some scenes while the Bluray makes some scenes clearer so there's a few more see-through blouse scenes also a scene with Kerry in bra now shows that the bra has holes for the nipples. Interesting...

Movie is worth a look as it's completely silly but never boring.

Update for 3 September...

A couple of quick updates from new Australian movies, nothing much but better than nothing.

Some quick synopses: Boar is a horror thriller where a gigantic boar terrorises a bunch of people in a small town. Some good kills and some decent action but honestly any big pig movie feels incredibly minor on the scale of terror plus the ending of Boar is a total cop out. But not bad, just not essential. Upgrade is a mystery thriller where a man is paralysed in a violent incident where his wife was killed. Thanks to an eccentric tech genius, he is given the ability to walk again thanks to a microchip called STEM. But that's not all, STEM begins to talk to the man and also can take over his body movements turning him into a superhuman who is hellbent on finding his wife's killers, but that's not all that STEM wants. Interesting idea from one of the co-creators of Saw, but the plot is pretty stock-standard for this sort of thing plus it's never not amusing to me to see Melbourne portrayed as an American city when it looks nothing like an American city no matter how many computer effects you use. Worth a look, but as with Boar, just not essential.

Update for 2 September...

And you thought I'd forgotten the weekend 90s update. How dare you? This update features all B-movies that strangely got a Bluray release, so there's some decent quality videos below. The sequel to The Dentist is pretty much more of the same and I capped that scene from Uncle Sam full well hoping the actress would be listed, but nope, uncredited, only turns up to provide nudity in the movie and to be poorly dubbed for her only lines. Night Of The Running Man is actually a fairly solid thriller from the director of Commando and Class of 1999, totally B-grade genre thriller but elevated by a decent Scott Glenn performance as an unstoppable hitman who will do everything to get a briefcase of cash taken by taxi driver played by Andrew McCarthy. A couple of decent sex scenes in the movie too. Serpent's Lair is an erotic psychological thriller where a cat come succubi sets her sights on Jeff Fahey and gradually wears him down. Silly stuff, some good nudity but most brief so I wasn't able to make many collages. Ah well...

Update for 1 September...

More old reduxes, this update ended up being an amalgam of two updates I decided to do at the same time, hence 7 movies ending up being capped. First off is the rest of the DVDs featuring Rachael Leigh Cook (well I did find a HD copy of Tangled) I have lying around. Tangled never got a local release AFAIK, but I remember finding a region 1 DVD of it at some secondhand store back in the day. The rest are from local DVD releases, for a while there, a new Rachael Leigh Cook movie would come out every few months, so of course I jumped all over it whether it had something to cap or not. Haven't capped her in anything new for 10 years which is shameful, but suggests she hasn't been in a lot I've been watching, which is disappointing, not that I think there'd be much to cap anyway although we can always hope for a Jodi Lyn O'Keefe-type unexpected nude scene.

Just looked up Katharine Towne wondering what she'd been up to recently and another one bites the dust, hasn't been in anything since 2012. Shame, I'd capped her a few times back on the old site. Sol Goode is an ordinary sex comedy that has a baffling amount of random cameos including from Jared Leto, who also produces, which may be even more baffling and a pre-Renaissance Jason Bateman basically playing a similar character to his Dodgeball character (which was made later than this movie).
