Australian Classics for 27 February...
Apologies that I haven't done anything from movies in the past couple of weeks. As I said in the previous update, I'm in the process of moving the site and I wanted to keep it up for as long as possible so I can complete the move without problems. Also, I didn't really have a lot ready to go, but I had a bit on the TV side. Anyway, back to the movies and another Australian Classic.
Puberty Blues is a 1981 coming of age drama set amongst the surf culture on the beaches of Sydney in the late 70s. Debbie and Sue (Nell Schofield and Jad Capelja) are best friends and are desperately trying to fit in with the cool girls who hang out with the surfers. After been caught cheating on an exam, the girls become closer to being in the cool group. They join their parties where Debbie attempts to lose her virginity with the dopey Bruce, but fails both times she tries. Bruce dumps her, not exactly something Debbie has a problem with as she wants Danny. And Debbie and Sue want to surf, but 'chicks don't surf', they're only good for going to shop and getting a chiko roll. 'And don't take any bites from it, alright?' Oh wow, this film is really is something. Very much of the time and the culture where every girl's a mole and every bloke gets a root. While the feminist movement had well and truly set in, it was still very far from where young girls are today and this film shows how much. Another great film from director Bruce Beresford (Don's Party, Money Movers and more in the coming weeks) and I'm still bummed about Jad Capelja only ever been in two films (the other been Freedom). And I can't find anything about where she went on the Puberty Blues DVD, I'll have to look again.
And don't forget an Australian slang dictionary if you watch this, shit, even I had a bit of trouble with want some things meant.
(Updated 21/10/2013) This update does make me wonder about what's going to happen in series 2 of the TV show as they have pretty much mined to entire movie/book. Both end with the girls rebelling against the cool kids, so I'm assuming they will be ostracised and left to fend for themselves or come up for some extreme girl bullying (more scrag fights!!). Also wondering why series 2 of Puberty Blues ain't going to be shown this year even though it's already finished and ready to show. Who knows what's going on at Channel 10? I'd doubt many of them working there would have a clue considering recent performance.
I've added a few extra videos from the movie featuring Leander Brent, all stuff I stupidly passed over first time around. And plenty of raw HD caps.

Australian Classics for 14 February...
Let's head back to the 70s.
Petersen is a 1974 drama about renaissance man Tony Petersen (Jack Thompson), an electrician and former footy star who has taken time out from his job to go to university, all the while encouraged by his doting wife Susie (Jacki Weaver) as she looks after their 2 kids. At university, he is a struggler, but he's doing a good job fitting in, mainly with one of his lecturers, the married Trish (Wendy Hughes), who are having a passionate affair. It seems that Petersen is quite the lady killer, even in front of his wife. He's also a big drinker and a brawler and you know how these go together. As the relationship with Trish develops, things for Petersen get more and more complex until it ends with a burst of extreme violence as he desperately tries to come to terms with his new life. Wow, Petersen, from the writer of Don's Party and the director of Alvin Purple and Stork (and Attack Force Z, can't forget that little corker), is one hell of a film that is very much of the time, so much so it seems like science fiction. Petersen pretty much has to walk in a room and every woman wants to sleep with him. His wife is one of the most submissive wives I've ever seen in film, she seems unreal. Were/Are woman really that dismissive of themselves? The sexism is a given for a 70s film, but at least it addresses it and then throws it against the wall when Trish calls one character a nymphomaniac even though she is having an affair with Petersen. The violence in the film seems unbelievable, but after thinking about it a little, I don't think it's that far removed for a notorious brawler. The rape scene is very sudden and I can't make up my mind about it's meaning. I'm still struggling to get my head around the film but it has definitely got me thinking. It's a strong and often ugly look at a man trying to find himself, even if it's not a perfect film, it's definitely something. Plus Jack Thompson's drunk acting is a hoot and he's regularly drunk and violent in this film.
Oh, and there's plenty of 70s nudity.
Also, apologies for the site been down for quite a while. I think it's time to move on from this server as the needs of the site have become too much for my hosts. So, Johnny Moronic Capturing will be on the move over the next month or more. That will mean that there might be issues with the site as the changeover occurs. Possibly that johnnymoronic.com may go down for a period of time, possibly a long period of time. If that is the case, there is always Johnny Moronic Television which should still be up and I'll advise you of any major issues via twitter or through the Yahoo! Group. In the meantime, if any issues occur, I will probably know about them, so there's no need to contact me in that regard. And please be patient, it's going to take a while.

Update for 9 February...
Yet another Australian film.
Esoterica is a Perth based noir thriller about Will (James Helm), a seen-it-all private detective who reluctantly takes another husband cheating on his wife case. He is told to hide in the cupboard in the bedroom and take photos of the husband while having sex with a prostitute. Easy, right? It turns out that the prostitute is none other than his former lover Nancy (Melanie Munt). Before a happy reunion can happen, they are brutally kidnapped and wake up in an empty swimming pool watching the babysitter of the son of the woman who went to the private detective be torn apart by a couple of ugly thugs. They threaten to do the boy next if they don't get a certain box in 24 hours. Box? What box? And why have they been mistaken for the boy's parents? Meanwhile, a world weary detective (the always awesome George Shevtsov) is back at the house talking to the woman and her cheating husband and threatening them if they don't give him the box. Then, he accidentally shoots the husband in the head and then accidentally kills the wife in the ensuing struggle. He leaves and guess who turns up back at the house to start looking for the box. Yep, Will and Nancy. And you what they find... This is going to be a long 24 hours for everyone. That's just the first 20 minutes of the film that is one of the more intriguing films I've seen in a while. Will, Nancy and the detective following close behind will have to deal with a bizarre underworld just to find a box. And when the box is unveiled, you'll never guess it in a million years. I'm still trying to figure it all out. I can't decide whether any of it is even real. For an extremely low budget film, this hits all the right buttons and even has original thoughts. Highly recommended if you can find it.

Update for 8 February...
How 'bout a new Australian film.
Caught Inside is a thriller set in the ocean outside of Mauritius focusing on a group of friends going on a surfing holiday. Usually, it's an all male affair, but Toobs (Simon Lyndon) has bought along his girlfriend Alex (Leeanna Walsman) and her friend Sam (Daisy Betts), who is recently single. Also on board skippered by Joe (Peter Phelps) is Rob (Sam Lyndon), young Archie (Harry Cox) and the irrepressible Bull (Ben Oxenbould). Bull has his eye on Sam, but can't quite seem to make the connection as Sam takes a liking to Rob and they hit it off. That is where Bull snaps, first taking it out on a local surfer he thinks has taken his wave and then he sets his sights on Sam. As she sunbathes on the beach on an island, Bull rubs sunscreen on Sam and does a little bit more, but Sam thinks it's Rob doing it and is none too happy when she finds out. Bull is banished to the island for the night to sleep it off, but this only riles Bull. The next morning, Bull swims aboard the boat bashes and ties up Rob, then drives the boat off as the crew are elsewhere. He then sets his sights on Sam for what he thinks is rightly his. A simple story using the age old 'stuck out on the sea with no place to run plot', this film is better than average thanks to a superbly menacing performance by of all actors Ben Oxenbould. Usually an actor who provides comedy relief playing likable losers, Oxenbould is suitably nutty, using his presence to intimidate all on board. No one dies in the film at all, but Bull's presence and ranting and raving is used to great effect to the point where you are almost sympathetic to him. A great turn that will not be recognised for what it is thanks to pretty much no one seeing the film. What a shame...

Australian VHS Classics for 6 February...
The VHS vault has creaked open again and I'm afraid it's leaked out again...
Back of Beyond is a 1995 thriller about a motor mechanic Tom (Paul Mercurio, fresh off that masterpiece Exit To Eden) who lives and works in a remote garage in the middle of the desert. He seems to be in some sort of purgatory because he may have cause the death of his sister (Rebekah Elmaloglou) in a motorcycle accident and has hidden himself away from the world. Meanwhile, a car has broken down in the desert with its driver Nick (John Polson) and passengers Connor (Colin Friels) and Charlie (Dee Smart) stranded. An Aboriginal family tells the group that they should head to the garage to get help, so Charlie does and almost dehydrates. She is rescued by Tom and they bond as she recovers. Eventually, Tom gets the other two and tows them to the garage to fix the car. Tom is a mysterious figure who seems to be able to see into the future or something. Connor is getting impatient with Tom's dilly-dallying leaving him late to get the money for some diamonds they have stolen. Conner alienates everyone and it's not long before things to the boil. Oh wow, I'd heard bad things about Back of Beyond, but this film is a pointless shocker. Paul Mercurio's character is so mysterious he's completely aloof and a complete drip and Charlie bafflingly falls for him in an instant. Colin Friels' character is bad and you know it because he has platinum blonde hair like all baddies. The plot is so utterly pointless I wondered if anything at all was going to happen and when it does, who cares? The final twist is straight out of the Ghost Whisperer and when you think about, doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Does that mean everyone's dead except for Charlie? Ah, who cares?
Again this series is from a VHS copy of the film and actually came out alright. Dee Smart has barely been in anything over the last decade, well after Water Rats anyway, so it was almost bizarre to see her in Panic at Rock Island recently. I still remember her from Home and Away, that's how far I go back..

Update for 5 February...
A quick one from an Australian film tonight.
Big Mamma's Boy is 'wog boy' comedy about Rocco (Frank Lotito) who is 35 years old and still lives and is under the thumb of with his over-protective mother. He is also a playboy real estate agent and one night at a bar with his real estate mates, he meets Katie (Holly Valance) and he uses all of his charm to woo her, which works. Until he comes into work on Monday and the new hot shot real estate agent turns out be Katie and she finds out that the house he took her too was not his but a clients. This and being discovered with another woman in another house leads to the decision that he must move out of home. His mother does not take this well and collapses. He decides to move in with one of his buddies, but, there's one major problem. His mother has always done everything for him, so he has no clue in doing just simple household chores. So, he enlists the help of a more than helpful neighbour. When Rocco finally moves out, he has a party and the morning after, his mother sneaks over and finds him in a compromising position with his housemate, leading her to believe he is gay and she collapses again. This leads to his mother contacting an old family friend from Italy to bring over 'a package' which turns out to the family friend's gorgeous daughter Maria (Pia Miller, wowie wow wow. I should at least make a collage of her from the film, she's something...). At the same time, Rocco is making ground in wooing Katie back. Typically dismissed by all critics, who just hate all 'wog boy' comedies, this is, yes, a slight, forgettable film, but it's hardly appalling. Hey, there are a few laughs to be had, mostly around the mother, which is more than I can say for the last 'wog boy' comedy, the actually appalling Kings of Mykonos. It's too easy to criticise these film because they play on obvious stereotypes, but I'd rather watch this film again this than some of films lauded at last week's dreadfully renamed film awards.
There's a bit of extra action below, with a Holly Valance deleted scene and some outtake stuff from Kristie Jandric to add to her brief scene in the film. Holly Valance has some atrocious wardrobe in this film, stuff that the 80s would have rejected it's that bad.

Redux Friday keeps on keeping on...
Following on from last Redux Friday, more HD videos from a Spanish movie, one that aired again last Friday actually. Funnily enough, a movie (Castillos de Cartón) from the last update airs tonight.
Collages and videos from Amor Idiota are now available here.

Redux Friday that rises early...
Collages and videos from Human Touch now available here.
Had a request for this and it just happened to be on TV a few weeks back, so here's a better quality version of the series I did almost 6 years ago (March 2006) with updated collages and more expansive and better quality videos.
As far as Paul Cox films go, Human Touch is not one of his better ones. Lots of pretensious art shit, more than usual. Feels a bit like a full length version of the Erotic Tale he did (Touch Me).
And yes, there is a MasterChef contestant in one of the videos below (Poh Ling Yeow, if you're wondering who). Has her own cooking show, might have to watch that, she's a very pretty lady...

Australian VHS Classics for 1 February...
Back to the VHS vault.
Hard Knocks is a 1980 drama about a teenage girl Samantha (Tracy Mann) who has had her fair share of trouble. Out of juvie after performing an armed robbery with her mates, she's keen to start again going straight. Of course, that isn't going to be easy. Her old friends haven't moved on at all, in fact they've dug deeper into that hole, so she attempts to avoid them. She has also started modelling and meets a woman who tries to get her better modelling gigs, except it turns out the guy doing the hiring will get her gigs if she sleeps with him. All the while, it feels as though Samantha is going to find it hard to get out of her hole and this is amplified when the cops who arrested her begin to harrass her. Hard Knocks is a pretty simple film, you've seen it all before, but it's short film (barely 75 minutes) which definitely helps. This is a character study, so the plot gets the short shrift and so do most of the supporting characters. Tracy Mann does some good work here as the whole film rests on her and is pretty convincing both pre and post-juvie. The film is perfectly servicable but hardly groundbreaking or for that matter. riveting.
Again, as with all stuff taken from VHS, the quality is down, but this one is pretty poor I have to say. Doubt there will be a DVD release any time soon. Ah well...
