Update for 31 October...

Another bunch of new movies.

Sweetheart is one of those cheapie Blumhouse horror thrillers where Kiersey Clemons makes her way to a deserted island after a boat she was on sinks but the terror hasn't ended yet as she has to grapple with a sea monster that is hungry for human flesh. OK movie apparently filmed on one of the Fiji Islands so inevitably a couple of Australian actors briefly turn up including Hanna Mangan Lawrence, who I haven't seen much of recently which is a shame. Also watched another Blumhouse cheapie called Prey which is basically the exact same plot and also has Australian actress Jolene Anderson turn up for a while. Nothing really to cap in it and Blumhouse sure are pumping these out to be forgotten as soon as they're released.

Also a couple of Netflix thrillers. Wounds, a slow burn horror movie about a man who finds a phone left behind by a group of college kids who seem to have summoned a demon who is looking for the perfect vessel to inhabit. Rattlesnake is a thriller about a mother who gets help for her daughter after she is bitten by a rattlesnake and it turns out that she has to repay that favour by killing someone causing harm to someone else.

Update for 30 October...

A mix of stuff in today's update, some new movies and some clean up from other series I've recently done.

Haven't seen the original David Cronenberg directed Rabid but this remake is a fairly good horror drama that begins as a story about the obsession with beauty and then turns into a vicious zombie like thriller where people start to act like they have rabies. It turns out that the revolutionary treatment that the lead (Laura Vandervoort) and others have received has a horrific side effect with the city becomes under siege from out-of-control rabid freaks. As I said, I haven't seen the original, so I can't compare but my understanding is that the remake is less sexualised that the original meaning not a lot to cap. It does have a scene where the surgical team are dressed similarly to another Cronenberg movie, Dead Ringers. I'm a big fan of the directors', the Soska twins, previous movie American Mary which is a movie I still think about regularly and hopefully this solid remake gets them bigger and better things.

Update for 26 October...

A couple of quick ones for the 90s weekend update. Rewatching Speed 2: Cruise Control for the first time since its release and wow, it definitely isn't half the movie of the original. Corny opening scene, poor rehash of plot from the original right down to the bad guy kidnapping Sandra Bullock for the final showdown yet again. Lets not forget terrible attempts at comedy plus so many unnecessary callbacks to the original. Willem Dafoe is a good choice for the bad guy but he's lumbered with some terrible characterisation, not the least a whole lot about him using leeches. Not wonder director Jan de Bont's career fizzled not long after this (the also terrible Tomb Raider movie he made was the final nail in that coffin).

Update for 23 October...

The final two Wrong Turn movies, as of now, are largely forgettable movies, both make radical changes to the lazy mythology the fourth movie attempted, both rather pointlessly.

Bloodlines adds a fatherly figure for the hillbillies, played by Doug Bradley of Pinhead fame, who's a nasty piece of work who has the added bonus of not being a freak, so he can blend in far easier. A bunch of young people are the target of the hillbillies as always, this time going to a local music festival where people dress up as hillbillies, ah yes, now we're getting meta. Anyway, after a planned attack on the young people is thwarted, the fatherly figure is arrested and it turns out he's been on the most wanted list for 30 years. But he knows that his boys will come and get him and murder everyone in their path or just anyone really. While the fatherly figure is locked up, he laughs deviously or sprouts off about what he's going to do to the women (you can take a guess what). Possibly the dumbest and maybe even the most hateful of the series with the women copping the worst of it, Doug Bradley is utterly revolting in a way that makes his Pinhead seem gentle. It takes forever for the hillbillies to get to the police station where the fatherly figure is locked up, even when they spend a fair amount of time just outside the place. They also manage to track down the teens they were thwarted from killing without knowing anything about their plans. The ambush of the town drunk inexplicably takes place on an outbound highway despite being outside the police station, where he was locked up for the last hour. Just a bad movie, the Declan O'Brien trilogy are the worst of the series.

Last Resort, a terribly punny title it turns out (it's the last movie and it's set in a resort...) makes another U-turn in the mythology by introducing a descendant of the hillbillies who inherits a hotel runs by a brother and sister (Sadie Katz) who may or may not be incestuous (it's suggested but it's also made clear that she's saving herself for the descendant to breed pure hillbilly children). Anyway, he brings along his girlfriend (Aqueela Zoll) and bunch of friends as he attempts to unwind while the brother manager sets the hillbillies on the friends and cooks up a feast of their remains while trying to persuade the descendant to become one of them all while the sister becomes massively horny, getting hot and bothered over everyone having sex. Definitely the horniest and most sex-filled of the series which is a slight relief from the sadism but there's plenty of that if you like it. There's a genuine attempt at more plot than young people being slaughtered and eaten by hillbillies, not that it makes it much better than 3-5, just more tolerable.

And here's an interesting tidbit of information about the last movie which goes to show how careless and lazy the Wrong Turn sequels were. In the version I saw, the scene where this happens is blurred out but there are versions that are without the blur. Baffling...

Also someone had a go at the chronology of the movies and the example given is demonstrably wrong. As I've suggested previously, the chronology of the movie is completely fucked by the stupidity of the 4th movie and the addition of the fatherly figure in the 5th movie. I would go with 4, 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and still be wrong. 6 clearly happens after 1 because they have modern phones and cameras while the first movie still has those piddly throwaway phones.

Gee, I hope they never make another one of these shitty movies. Watching them all in a row was a mistake.

Update for 22 October...

Wrong Turn 3-5 are directed by the same guy, Declan O'Brien, and clearly he saw the ultra-violence of the second movie but missed the tone of that movie, so these three movies are just completely hateful and not in a good way.

Left For Dead is basically the same plot as the first two but this time all bar one of the young people are murdered in the opening scene and now the hillbillies get their fill by toppling a bus with guards transporting violent prisoners to another jail with the prisoners also planning the escape. They join the one woman (Janet Montgomery) who survived the opening bloodbath and it isn't long before the prisoners want to fuck/rape her. Apart from Janet's character and maybe one of the guards, everyone else is pretty revolting. Also, the hillbillies are now inexplicably indestructible and only seem to get hurt/die by being exploded. The premise is well and truly tired and there's no empathy for either side. Both of the women who die do so in pretty revolting ways plus one of those women just disappears for 20-odd minutes before turning up naked and brutalised. There's also barely any mythos to sustain the series except that one of the cannibals is the same as the second movie, not that this is made explicitly clear unless you watch the movies back-to-back. It also ends with all the hillbillies dying, so you'd think that they can't go on but no, there's an after credits scene which undoes the credibility of two characters and suggests there's more hillbillies waiting for the follow-up that hasn't directly materialised to this date.

Bloody Beginning is an origin story, finally an attempt at mythology to give some backbone to the series but of course, it's butchered badly and ends up making no chronological sense. Basically, the three hillbillies from the previous movie are in a mental institution where they manage to brutalise the staff and then 30 years later (around the time of the first movie), they are still there when a bunch of sex-crazed fun loving young people decide to wait out a storm before continuing their snow holiday. What they hell did the hillbillies do for the 30 years before this? Apparently waiting for these holiday makers so that they can eat them in some fairly graphic scenes. At least the girls seem like the smart ones in this movie and do a fair bit of work subduing the hillbillies, only to be betrayed by incompetent men. Not a good movie but slightly better than the incredibly lame third movie plus you get some mythology which makes no sense and is subsequently forgotten in the following movies.

Update for 21 October...

Yep, I'm going through the Wrong Turn series of movies, none of which I had watched before and with today's update I'll be going through the two best in the series, but that's not saying much. Been trying to do this for quite a while, so it's good to finally get around to it.

The Wrong Turn series is basically a bunch of young people go to the mountains for some fun and come across a family of deformed murderous hillbilly cannibals and try to survive but they usually don't. That's pretty much all 6 movies in a nutshell, it's definitely the plot of the first two. The first movie actually got a cinema release, did OK, enough for them to become a straight-to-DVD series. Wrong Turn is actually OK, there's a nastiness to it but compared to the rest of the series, it is actually fairly restrained and at least tries to be a serious survivalist horror movie. It does end with some predictability with who survives but it's not without a fight. The second movie, Dead End, is about the hillbillies causing mayhem on the contestants and crew of a Reality TV show that is filming in their hills. This movie feels like it has it's tongue firmly in its cheek with some somewhat comical deaths and Henry Rollins as the host of the show who makes it his mission to kill all the hillbillies is a bit of fun. It's also far more violent than the original, in fact if it wasn't done with tongue-in-cheek, it would be quite ugly. Also the first in the series to have nudity with the ever reliable Crystal Lowe providing a brief look at her breasts before being slaughtered by a jealous hillbilly wife who makes sure her pervy man knows who's boss. I wish this tone would've remained for the rest of the series but as you will see in the coming days, Wrong Turn takes a well, wrong turn into some of the most hateful shit seen in recent movies.

Update for 19 October...

90s weekend upon us once more. Never seen Phoenix before, a thriller where a bunch of cops led by Ray Liotta dip their fingers into many of the local criminal enterprises. Liotta sticks to being a degenerate gambler and loses $16,000 which doubles when he stupidly tries to win all of what he owes in one bet. The crim he owes will wipe the debt if he kills a snitch but he comes up with a plan to rob a local strip club owner with his cop buddies, which goes about as well as expected. Liotta is good here, shame he never kicked on as a leading man. Anthony La Paglia is also good as an absolute prick who is shockingly corrupt and before long you can add murderer to the ever-expanding list. Lots of fairly known actors turn up throughout including Anjelica Huston, Brittany Murphy, Kari Wuhrer, Jeremy Piven (who gets massively cuckolded by Kari Wuhrer), Daniel Baldwin, Xander Berkeley typecast as ever, Giancarlo Esposito, Giovanni Ribisi etc. etc. And also as the movie is a late 90s thriller, it can't help but have a touch of the Tarantinos about it but it thankfully keeps it to a minimum.

I should say that there's a weird audio glitch in a couple of videos from Juana De Loca, nothing dramatic otherwise I wouldn't have captured it but it's from the original audio, so nothing I could do about. But, as I said, it's not much, a brief silence at a certain point that would occur every minute or so throughout the movie.

Update for 14 October...

90s weekend seeps into Monday once more. Some quick synopses:

Homegrown is a comedy-drama where three bumbling marijuana growers watch their boss get killed and decide to sell the weed themselves, only to run into a large web of influence that the boss had balanced delicately until his death. OK movie directed by Stephen Gyllenhaal, dad of Maggie and Jake (who both appear briefly), billed as a comedy but not really one.

Incognito is a European art fraud thriller where struggling painter cum expert forger Jason Patric is given $500,000 to replicate a Rembrandt painting that has been thought to be lost for over 300 years so a bunch of shady art dealers can sell it for millions. Then when he catches wind of the fraud, he apparently shoots dead one of the dealers and goes on the run with the forgery and takes art expert Irène Jacob as his hostage, attempting to get himself off the hook but it's not looking good. Fairly good although it relies on one helluva sleight-of-hand to keep the plot going for a lot longer than it should.

Skinner is a serial killer drama where a serial killer (Ted Raimi) who skins his victims, usually prostitutes, to make human skin suits, moves to a new town and rents a room from Ricki Lake and her miserable trucker husband. Meanwhile, the one victim that got away (Traci Lords) attempts to track him down and kill him. Starts out OK but then the skinning starts and it turns into an ugly monstrosity with one lengthy portion of the movie involving the serial killer skinning a black man and then wearing his skin and imitating him for what seems like an eternity is something I never thought I'd ever see. Holy shit...

The Ninth Gate is a Roman Polanski directed thriller where a shady book dealer (Johnny Depp) is enlisted by a high profile book owner (Frank Langella) to see if a book he just bought about the devil called The Ninth Gate is actually real with only 3 known copies left in the world. Turns out he's not the only one interested in the books and as the bodies pile up and with various close calls on his own life, maybe he's bitten off more than he can chew. Not top tier Polanski but there are the usual well done set pieces and the plot rollicks along with some very weird moments that keeps it watchable for its 2 and a bit hour runtime.

Update for 13 October...

90s weekend once again and there's a martial arts flavour to today's update.

I remember there being a lot of buzz about a sequel to Universal Soldier back in the day which ended up with two separate parties splitting off and making their own movie, both of which long forgotten. After all that, the one that Van Damme tied himself to ended up being an incredibly limp follow up, typical of straight-to-video fare. Amazing to think that Van Damme was a big star just a few years earlier and by the end of the decade he was already into the straight-to-video market.

Rapid Fire is an OK crime action-thriller where Brandon Lee finds himself in the middle of a drug war between the Mafia and Asian interests after witnessing a murder. Lee's pretty good and does more action stuff that he did in Showdown In Little Tokyo, Powers Boothe is even better as the cop who is desperate to end his decade long investigation and now he has the chance to do so.

I hadn't watched any of the Kickboxer series, so starting at the fourth one seems a bad place to start but honestly this movie seems like a total standalone sequel. Van Damme is long gone but his character's brother David has picked up the slack, played by Sasha Mitchell, who I only knew as the doofus from Step By Step, so him being a big martial arts guy is a bit of spin. David has been let out of jail so that he can help the DEA get his arch-nemesis Tong Po, who just so happens to be holding his wife captive. His way in is by getting himself invited to a million dollar martial arts tournament held at Tong Po's fortress, which he does with relative ease. Well, the plot is basically pinched from Enter The Dragon but if you're going to rip something off, it might as well be from something great. That's where the similarities between the two end as Kickboxer 4 is a terrible movie, light on any decent fights and an embarrassingly limp final fight suggesting a follow-up that never eventuated (in this sense. Van Damme did return to Kickboxer recently). There's a sleazy twenty minutes where a bunch of sex scenes happen, all bafflingly cut short, that one with the two girls could've gone another 10 minutes... Also, most of the plot makes no sense, scenes are cut short, fights barely get started and the bad guys are pathetic particularly Tong Po. Sasha Mitchell is remarkably surly and miserable throughout which I suppose you would be if you were trying to save your wife from your arch-nemesis but he looks like he's been forced against his will to do this movie, possibly the producers mirroring the plot but holding a loved one hostage. There's a plot point where it's suggested that the bad guy would not recognise David despite being his nemesis and stealing his wife, which is so bad I can't believe someone didn't nix it at the writing stage let alone leave it in the final cut. But then I wouldn't expect anything less from director Albert Pyun, who's has so many terrible movies to his name. Haha, I just looked it up and Pyun and Mitchell are about to make another Kickboxer movie, 25 years after this one, bafflingly in Algiers (also some more Cyborg movies, geez, the shit never ends).

Little Monsters is an Australian horror comedy where Dave (Alexander England) is a big time loser who is 'on a break' from his long term girlfriend and is living at his single mum sister Tess' (Kat Stewart) house, who has a young son Felix. To pull his weight around the house, Dave takes Felix to school and meets his teacher Miss Caroline (Lupita Nyong'o) and develops a thing for her which leads him to volunteer on the class trip to see the children's entertainer Teddy McGiggle (Josh Gad). Meanwhile, a zombie outbreak at nearby military facility moves over to where the class trip is happening and now the class, Dave, Miss Caroline and Teddy McGiggle must fight for their life against the gathering zombie masses while the military plan on bombing the playground with them in it. OK comedy, a lot of which revolves around swearing around the kids which is pretty old hat by now but is fairly fun without reaching any great heights.

Bloodline is a thriller where a school psychiatrist (Seann William Scott) rediscovers his killer tendencies after the birth of his first child by his wife (Mariela Garriga) and starts killing people who are causing trauma to his student patients. Turns out he got these tendencies from his mother (Dale Dickey), who has also come closer to him since the birth of the child. As the bodies pile up and the police close in, can the mother-son killer duo keep their secret from his wife and what would happen if she found out? Not bad, solid thriller with some decent kills and a decent nude scene(s) from Christie Herring.

Bliss is a horror thriller where a struggling artist (Dora Madison) gets introduced to some powerful new hallucinatory drug which triggers something in her while hanging out with two friends who may or may not be vampires and a combination of both is causing her to imagine violent images and have massive blackouts. But, it is also influencing her new painting that she desperately needs to do to stay afloat. As her life spirals out-of-control, her painting being to consume her to the point where it may kill her. OK, very trippy movie that has a slightly different take on the trauma influences art plot. Not sure I fully understand it though...

Scarborough is a drama where two couples check into a hotel for a weekend away in Scarborough, both featuring a teacher and a 16 year-old student. Liz (Jodhi May) checks into her room joined by younger lover Daz (Jordan Bolger) where she attempts to tell him something that will affect their relationship. Meanwhile, Aiden (Edward Hogg) checks in with the younger Beth (Jessica Barden) who is pressuring him to leave his girlfriend so they can be together. In the beginning the relationships mirror one another closely but as the weekend unfolds, the differences begin to come clear when both relationships must come to terms with a pregnancy. The two teacher's unseen partners will also play a part in the direction the relationships go. Can the taboo relationships survive the weekend and their resultant pregnancies? OK look at two similar relationships that might be related to one another as a tangled web of not-so-much lies as half-truths become unravelled over the weekend. The movie ignores how to two relationships began which doesn't give an emotional hook on either relationship but how the relationships are related is the fascinating part of the movie that I'm still trying to figure out conclusively. Interesting but not really a revelatory movie about the complexities of such relationships.

More 90s movies.

Live Wire is one of those mad bomber terrorises a city movies that were all the rage in the 90s. This one is about a mad bomber (Ben Cross) who wants his cut of the proceeds of a corrupt arms bill that a bunch of senators also made millions from. He's forced a scientist to come up with the ultimate detonator, the human body and it's stumping the FBI with an ultra-dedicated agent (Pierce Brosnan) desperate to stop the mad bomber, mainly because his wife (Lisa Eilbacher) has left him for one of the targeted senators and he wants to keep her safe. The idea about the human body detonator is pretty decent and works well and the ending is exciting but apart from that, it's pretty standard B-thriller stuff, largely forgettable but fairly watchable.

The Pit And The Pendulum is a horror movie of sorts, more a drama than a scary or psychological thriller, about a baker's wife Maria (Rona De Ricci) who intervenes in the whipping of a boy during the Inquisition and is declared a witch by the church. The head of the church Torquemada (Lance Henriksen) locks up her husband when he attempts to free her and then becomes unstable as his obsession with Maria grows including killing a Cardinal who tells him to stop torturing people (Oliver Reed, clearly turning up for drinking money). Well, it turns out Maria is actually a witch and after she has her tongue cut out by Torquemada, Maria with the help of her witch cellmate, goes on a journey to find her inner witch. Incredibly silly stuff, not surprising considering Stuart Gordon is the director and he loves a bit of nuttiness. Not one of his best, not helped by Henriksen who appears to have gone completely method and is so over-the-top, it wouldn't surprise me if he went insane during the production. There's no need for what he is pushing in this movie, absolutely batshit stuff.
