Update for 31 October...

Still persisting with this horror week thingy.

American Mary is a um, movie that follows the incomparable Mary Mason (Katharine Isabelle), who is studying to be a surgeon, but is currently very short of money with the bills piling up. She decides to go to a stripping interview at Billy's strip club (Antonio Cupo), fails miserably, but a stroke of luck bags her $5000 on the spot when Billy asks her to patch up someone. From there, Mary's thrill ride begins. Wannabe real doll Beatress (Tristan Risk) comes into her life and attempts to get Mary to perform some extreme surgery for her friend Ruby Realgirl. She does, after some persuading. When Mary attends a party for surgeons, she is drugged and raped by her professor and Mary decides on instant revenge with the help of Billy. Mary is now a changed woman, giving up being a surgeon and now performing extreme surgery for whoever wants it. And it seems that Mary and Billy were made for each other. Oh, and Ruby Realgirl's husband doesn't like her new appearance and decides to get his own revenge. Oh boy, American Mary is a one helluva mess of a film, but boy what a film it is. From the twin Soska sister directors of Dead Hooker In A Trunk, also a film that's pretty messy, the first 40 minutes are quite something, highly intriguing and looking good for something great, then the movie goes all over the place looking for a plot strand to hang on until that runs dry and then goes onto the next idea. That includes a bizarre scene involving the sisters themselves. It's such a shame that American Mary doesn't pull off one great movie, but Katharine Isabelle and Antonio Cupo are great and there's enough going on to suggest the Soska sisters are a team to watch, although their next movie is bafflingly the sequel to See No Evil although with Katharine Isabelle again. Who knows, could be great...

Update for 29 October...

A couple more films that fit into the unofficial horror week including one I've been sitting on for too long.

Community is a survivalist horror thriller with the difference being that the surviving is done in an urban estate. Two college students Isabelle (Jemma Dallender) and Will (Elliott Jordan) are making a documentary for their class about the infamous Draymen Estate, where it's inhabitants have run amok so much that even the police fear entering the place. What they find when they get there is children running amok while the parents are completely out of it, apparently on some super-strength weed that manages to calm people to an alarming level of sloth. The amateur filmmakers are getting some pretty good footage until Will stumbles on where the weed is grown and this sets off alarm bells with the people who appear to be running the estate. And that's when people start dying... The lower class horror movie has become a staple of British cinema and Community adds this ever-growing genre. And Community isn't half bad and probably works better when it's trying to work out what's going on than when the killings start. Poor Jemma Dallender (I Spit on Your Grave 2) cops it again, tied up, stripped, screaming and force fed who knows what and that screaming of hers is going to keep me up at night.

Mirrors 2 is the straight-to-DVD follow up to the Kiefer Sutherland starring original and a remake of a 2003 Korean movie. Nick (Nick Stahl) is given a job at his father's work as a late night security guard to help him move on from the accident that claimed his wife-to-be. Nick starts seeing premonitions of graphic murders in the mirrors around the workplace of people who work at the building, something only he can see. Police become suspicious of him as he keeps turning up at the crime scenes after the event. It seems that these murders may be related to a missing girl and Nick, who with the help of her concerned sister Elizabeth (Emmanuelle Vaugier), begin to piece together the connections between the missing sister and the murders. Basically taking the basic plot points and pasting them into a brand new scenario, Mirrors 2 ain't exactly exciting and Nick Stahl looks bored throughout (or maybe that's his concerned face). I've gotta admit, I haven't seen the first movie, but I have seen the Korean original and was a bit so-so about that movie particularly the twin thing. I just don't think these Asian horror movie translate well when put into an American scene.

Update for 27 October...

Have decided to go with an unofficial horror week with Halloween coming up, although, it's now really something we celebrate in Australia. Anyway, a couple of sort of horror movies starring Juno Temple today.

Magic Magic is a psychological thriller following Alicia (Juno Temple), who is going on her first trip overseas with her cousin Sara (Emily Browning) and they are meeting up with Sara's friends in Chile. But from the beginning, Alicia is not handling being away from home well at all. She can't sleep, seems incapable of fitting in with the others particularly the rather annoying Brink (Michael Cera) and then exhibits some very strange behaviour. The longer she stays, the worse Alicia gets and the more physically ill she becomes. Is this all real or is this in her head? Tough film to watch as the character of Alicia is extremely frustrating, you just want to shake her until she's all better, but I've known people who have gone on trips out of the country and completely lost their mind because they can't handle it. So, the character feels real, but boy would they be impossible to be around. Liking this movie is all about how you react to Alicia and that's why I can't recommend Magic Magic. At least it's something a little different.

It's been a while since I've watched Jack and Diane and I've been sitting on it for a while, but it's something about love blossoming between Jack (Riley Keough) and Diane (Juno Temple) and something about Diane being a twin who's going back home to England and her having visions that she's some sort of monster who's trying to kill Jack or something. I think that's it...

Was hoping to release this yesterday, but had issues, so here it is finally. Here's hoping for more Blurays of classic Australian movies.

This update does make me wonder about what's going to happen in series 2 of the TV show as they have pretty much mined to entire movie/book. Both end with the girls rebelling against the cool kids, so I'm assuming they will be ostracised and left to fend for themselves or come up for some extreme girl bullying (more scrag fights!!). Also wondering why series 2 of Puberty Blues ain't going to be shown this year even though it's already finished and ready to show. Who knows what's going on at Channel 10? I'd doubt many of them working there would have a clue considering recent performance.

Redux for 19 October...

Saw the remake of Patrick yesterday in cinemas, so with the Bluray of the original just released, good time for an update.

And as I predicted 2 and 1/2 years ago, the Patrick remake just isn't as good, in fact the first half is near infuriating with so many false jump scares that it for one ten minute stretch, it becomes comical with one jump scare leading to another, leading to another into another. The Patrick remake works best when it sticks close to the original's plot, but has none of the eccentric weirdness and shamelessly Hitchcockian style of the original, it's all very generic. Also, the remake take that one extremely (but brief) odd bit of the original where the doctor friend tells the lead nurse Kathy to check the comatose Patrick's erection and completely blows it out of proportion. Same with the spitting. Charles Dance does a pretty good job as the Dr. Frankenstein like doctor and Sharni Vinson is alright, but Rachel Griffiths is given nothing to do except scowl until her character dies (Julia Blake is so much better in the same role in the original). Rod Mullinar is the only actor that comes back from the original although the woman who play's Patrick's mother in the original is also briefly in it, although I don't remember her. It's a misfire, but because the original is so eccentric, it was always going to be hard to recreate.

Now what you're here for, the nudity. Well, none from Sharni Vinson, but there are two scenes where a nude body double are used, one briefly during a sex scene and another in the bath. Cheki Guillou is credited as her double. Also, the scene where Patrick kills his mother and her lover is recreated, this time with Simone Buchanan in the role and she shows her breasts and then briefly full frontal nudity and possibly again in the bath while getting electrocuted. I think this is Simone's first on screen nudity (correct me if I'm wrong) and she's looking very good and is a great surprise considering she's best known for her child actor day's and of course Hey Dad! There is also nudity (breasts) from some comatose patients at a few different times, not sure who they are or if they were credited at all. I think that's it.

Update for 10 October...

The Beautiful and Damned is modern day update of the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald (seems to be the in thing...) and follows trust fund kid Anthony Patch (Ross Ditcham) who is a leeching money off his unimpressed grandfather and Anthony does not want to lose that. When he meets Gloria Gilbert (Kristen Condon), he falls for her and they begin a relationship which eventually leads to marriage, which is sure to please his grandfather even if it's more a marriage of convenience. But, not far off death, his grandfather and his faithful right hand man visit his in the midst of an orgy of drugs and sex. Disgusted with him, he decides to write Anthony out of his will, then he dies a few days later. Anthony and Gloria decide to contest the content of will in court, but by this stage, Anthony has lost control and become addicted to cocaine and taken another lover. Can he keep it together long enough to convince the court he deserves the money? From the co-director of Bloodlust, The Beautiful and Damned is much more restrained and measured, but the movie is not without one of two over the top moments. It's also not a bad movie either although there's limitations thanks to the budget. Parts of the plot are skipped over comprehensively (it's only suggested they get married and the wedding never happens or is mentioned...) which doesn't help, for the most part the movie flows pretty well. The acting too is erratic with Kristen Condon and Paul Moder probably the best, but Ross Ditcham has no presence whatsoever and that's a problem when he's the lead. Sure, it's no Gatsby, but it works nonetheless.

Update for 7 October...

Kiss of the Damned is a stylish vampire romantic drama that begins with Hollywood screenwriter Paolo (Milo Ventimiglia) meeting the reclusive Djuna (Joséphine de La Baume) at a video store and he becomes enraptured with her. But, while interested in Paolo, Djuna is resistant of his charms because she has a secret. She is a vampire and trying to ween herself off human blood, but Paolo wants Djuna so much that he is willing to become a vampire to be with her. No problems. Then, Djuna's erratic sister Mimi (Roxane Mesquida) arrives to stay for a week. She is also a vampire, but she has no qualms with eviscerating a human. And so the fun begins as Mimi goes about her ways and doing her best to usurp Djuna and steal Paolo for herself while causing damage to the underground collective of vampires run by world famous actress Xenia (Anna Mouglalis, that voice!!) that Djuna is a part of. Add a dash of Frenchiness (that's not a word...) and a fair piece of The Hunger and you are somewhat approaching where Kiss of the Damned is going. Not for everyone's taste because it's very much style over substance, even with a decent plot, but Kiss of the Damned is well worth a look if you are looking for something a little different in the vampire genre. And anything with Roxane Mesquida is worth a look, especially when she's playing sexy nutcases.

Update for 6 October...

A quickie grab bag today.

No One Lives is a horror thriller that follows two groups of people. The first group is a murderous gang of robbers lead by Hoag (Lee Tergesen) that includes his daughter Amber (Lindsey Shaw), his lover Tamara (America Olivo), unhinged nutcase Flynn (Derek Magyar) and others. They meet and then kidnap a couple Driver (Luke Evans) and his lover Betty (Laura Ramsey) who are having issues. These are compounded when Betty kills herself while being held hostage. Then, while going through the kidnapped couples car, they find a girl tied up in the back, Emma (Adelaide Clemens), a girl who has been missing for months and is subject to a massive hunt to find her. The gang find out that there is a massive reward if she is found, but finding Emma is about to be the gang's biggest mistake as this unleashes the psychopath in Driver, who will do anything to get Emma back. Solid little movie from the director of The Midnight Meat Train (and some Japanese movies I like in Versus and Azumi) that has some pretty good thrills and kills and when it wants to be, is quite nasty. No One Lives doesn't muck about and does it's job quite neatly.

Update for 2 October...

More brief stuff today, this time from the London set Rashomon-inspired thriller Liars All, where three people are interrogated over the death of moody Missy (Gillian Zinser) at the end of a night of partying and sex that began with a game of Truth or Dare. As much as I like the idea of Rashomon, those inspired by it are usually too tricky and are far more interested in sensational twists. Liars All is no exception and its ending is basically a slap in the face after all that you watched. Also features a couple of Australian actresses in Stephanie McIntosh (Jesus, is this the first thing she's done post-Neighbours?), playing a British pop star and Claire Scott. Both are fairly brief roles with nothing to cap, sadly.
