Update for 30 September...

90s weekend seeps once again onto Monday with a couple of movies co-starring Tia Carrere.

Never seen Showdown In Little Tokyo before and it's an unashamed B action movie where Dolph Lundgren and Brandon Lee play a couple of cops trying to take down the Yakuza headed by the ruthless Yoshida (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa) who just happened to kill Lundgren's parents. His grand plan is to get Americans hooked on the drug ice by lacing a beer they are producing with it, which is bold but also remarkably stupid. Showdown has some pretty good and very violent action scenes and a heaping of sleaze and like the plot is remarkably stupid with plenty of corny one-liners to choke out some laughs at. It's completely ludicrous and wildly over-the-top but is highly watchable and is done is just over 75 minutes, so not much to complain about.

My Teacher's Wife looks like it could be an erotic awakening movie but is just a teen movie with some mild taboo between Tia Carrere and Jeremy London's characters. To be honest, it's utterly mediocre and uninteresting and Christopher McDonald as the cuckolded husband is severely underused considering some of the psychopaths he's played. This movie and Showdown just show how disappointing it is that Tia Carrere has never done a proper nude scene.

Update for 29 September...

90s weekend update once more.

Brain Dead is a fairly good psychological horror movie in which Bill Pullman plays a brain scientist more attune with his brain friends than his human friends, who is recruited by his college buddy Bill Paxton, a corporate raider who works for some shadowy company, to check out a patient called Halsey who apparently killed his family. But the shadowy company isn't worried about that, they want to know a special number only he knows and Pullman is brought in to tinker with his brain until he finds it or lobotomises him so no one knows it. After showing what he can do to for the shadowy company, Pullman is hit by a car and then things become a complete mess for him. Is what happening to him real or is he just having a mental breakdown and only Halsey can help him. Tricky movie with lots of mind bending stuff that has a pretty sad ending and is well worth a look.

Pledge Night, technically a 1988 movie although it is listed 1990 in most places, is a low-rent sleazy slasher horror movie with a fair bit of input from the band Anthrax. Basically, a fraternity is putting a new batch of pledges through hell before they join but the ghost of a previous pledge who died in an acid bath comes back to murder everyone in the house. Very poor and that's even with some very sleazy nudity with a tendency to kill the women while naked. There's one or two OK scenes that would've worked well in a much better movie but this movie never aims high and it succeeds at what it wants to achieve and that's probably the best you can say about it. Even Anthrax's involvement is largely forgettable with Joey Belladonna turning up as the guy who dies in the acid bath. He doesn't even play the brought back to life killer, what a joke... Also bafflingly, there's a character in the movie that is played by someone named only Cassandra (see scene below) and some daft dickhead has put two and two together and come up with five and decided that it sort of looks like Australian actress Cassandra Delaney and listed her as such on IMDB and everyone else has just accepted it as fact as it's listed as such on numerous sites. That is absolutely not her. Not in a million years.

Also, these two movies feature Vivica A. Fox, Dominique Swain and Eric Roberts (who gets to cop it one way or another), so there's definitely a feel of tossing them off one after the other. Update for 23 September...

Still going with the TV movies, one I didn't have time for in yesterday's 90s update and A Job To Kill For, which ruins a perfectly good twist with another very stupid twist. Two Came Back is a 90s lost at sea drama, so already it's a bit more involved than the usual TV movie but is let down by the unnecessary addition of love rivals which isn't even a thing by the end of the movie. The lost at sea stuff is pretty solid in a low budget way. Also the title betrays any suspense by giving away what happens and you can hazard a guess that the two biggest stars of the movie (Melissa Joan Hart and Jonathan Brandis) are the ones that survive. OK movie after the love rival stuff is abandoned, at least it's not another stalker thriller.

Weekend 90s update and you guessed it, it's all TV movies. As I've said before, I'm always wary of recording old 90s TV movies off the TV as they have a habit of being edited, not necessarily for censorship reasons either. I recorded Rapture 4 years ago which seems to have been it's last showing on local TV as it's not in HD and from memory, it wasn't until 2016 when the main channel was finally simulcast in HD. It's also one of the earliest things on my PVR, so it's time to get rid of it. I would suggest it's uncut as there is a bit of nudity in the movie from Natalie Radford, but I have nothing to judge it against.

Update for 17 September...

Had a few more 90s movies lined up so it's now a long weekend for the 90s update.

Shopping, the first movie from director Paul W.S. Anderson (he of Mortal Kombat, Event Horizon, the Resident Evil and Death Race series) is a typical young adults looking for thrills outside of the law movie that's not a bad movie but is nothing you haven't seen a thousand times before. Early movie for Jude Law, who's quite good here and works well with Sadie Frost, as his loyal lover and fellow thrillseeker. There's a cameo from a mulleted Sean Bean who's really wasted in his role particularly as it seemed like he might play a part later on in the movie, but no, just the one scene.

T-Force is a very B-grade movie about a bunch of cybernauts who are sent in to take on terrorists but after a disastrous mission where a bunch of hostages die, they are decommissioned. But, the cybernauts are having none of that and decide to eliminate all threats to their existence including the chief of police and the mayor. A fairly decent idea to begin the B-grade action thrills and isn't without it's charm, the cybernauts seem to have more life than the humans and the buddy-buddy cop stuff is corny enough to work. Vernon Wells turns up as terrorist in the opening action sequence that reeks of him phoning it in for the pay cheque. I was thinking early on in the movie that this feels very similar to the also fun Hologram Man and wouldn't you know it, it's directed and made by the same people.

Update for 16 September...

The 90s weekend continues onto Monday. Hadn't seen Judas Kiss before, the first of the Carla Gugino/writer-director Sebastian Gutierrez collaborations (the latest being the recent TV show Jett) and it's a strange beast, a movie that seems like it should be a comedy but there's barely a laugh to be had. There's an awful lot of plot being explained right up until the end and it certainly bogs down the middle of the movie. One or two good set pieces, particularly the ransom exchange but there's so much plot going on that a set piece is sweet relief, but that's the Tarantino 90s wannabes for you. Hidden Assassin is an Euro B-thriller starring Dolph Lundgren from the director of First Blood, who's definitely gone down the pecking order by this stage of his career. Not a bad little action thriller about the US government killing enemies and laying the blame on retired assassins that doesn't hold back with killing off the cast and has some decent lo-fi action set pieces.

Update for 15 September...

90s weekend upon us once more. Some quick synopses:

Caught Up is a silly little noir thriller where drug dealer Daryl (Bokeem Woodbine) is about to settle down and go straight with his newly pregnant girlfriend (Cynda Williams), but he has the most rotten luck and unwittingly becomes the getaway driver to his dopey friend who robs a bank and he gets caught and sent up for 5 years. When he gets out, he's has to start again with his girlfriend moved on with her life and then he meets psychic Vanessa (also Cynda Williams) who is a dead ringer for his girlfriend and things are picking up again except she's involved with so many dodgy men which makes Daryl involved and he just keeps getting in deeper and deeper and remember he has the most rotten luck. Absolutely ridiculous noir movie with twists so ludicrous they need to seen to believed but I can't hate it as it's one helluva fun movie and quite a bit of sexiness from Cynda Williams (always welcome after that great Erotic Tales episode she did) and while the movie advertises cameos from Snoop Dogg and LL Cool J, they're rather limp; the better cameo is from Jeffrey Combs who has one crazy scene well worth a look. I liked this movie much more than it probably deserves, but it's a fun ride.

I'm pretty sure I've seen The Stoned Age before, it seems familiar, basically a low rent Dazed And Confused that focuses on just the burn outs and specifically a couple of them as they look to pick up a couple of chicks they heard are up for it over the other side of town outside Frankie Avalon's old place, something half the town seems to have also heard. A few laughs along the way, but just OK with the added bonus of Renee Allman/Griffin/whatever showing her breasts or in a bikini for a fair portion of the movie.

Syngenor is a silly B-thriller where a company has developed psychotic super soldier monsters for use in the upcoming wars in the Middle East and they have been let loose thanks to a couple of workers who want to take over the company. Turns out they are unstoppable killing machines who asexually reproduce while the boss of the company has completely lost his mind and it's up to the daughter of the developer of the Syngenor (Starr Andreeff) and a persistant journalist to help save the day. Totally B-grade and completely silly and has an all time over-the-top performance from David Gale, even topping his work in two Re-Animator movies.

Update for 11 September...

Only You is a romantic drama where Elena (Laia Costa) meets Jake (Josh O'Connor) while squabbling over a taxi on New Year's Eve and they instantly fall for one another and quickly move in together. After getting over the almost 10 year age difference, they decide to make a baby but nothing happens after a while so they choose to undertake IVF treatment. This starts to take a toll on the relationship as it doesn't work and their friends are instantly getting pregnant. After being told that there is no chance that Elena can become pregnant, the relationship begins to fall apart and they decide to split up but is this the end or can they find another way to love one another. Incredibly depressing drama that starts early with the downer material and doesn't let up for 2 hours. Solid drama but there's little happiness here even with it's slightly hopeful ending, so don't bother if you are looking for something joyous.

Update for 10 September...

A couple of new movies. Some quick synopses:

Hex is a supernatural thriller set in Cambodia where an American man on holiday meets a fellow American traveller (Jenny Boyd) and instantly falls for her and after a false start, they get together. Trouble seems to follow the woman, whether it's through a local hood or self-inflicted. It seems that she was a conjoined twin where the spirit of the now dead twin has entered her body causing her to have epileptic fits or act out and possibly murder people and it's only making her physically worse. Hopefully one last desperate attempt to remove the spirit by a local healer can save her. OK movie with a well worn plot particularly the American tourist in Asian hot spot part and is helped by the gorgeous Jenny Boyd, who I swear I've seen her somewhere before but nothing she's done stands out.

The Combination: Redemption is an Australian drama/thriller sequel to the 2009 original where a Lebanese/Australian man is still haunted by the death of his brother at the hands of a local gangster 10 years later. Now, he gets caught in a series of plots that involve him trying to make amends including helping a young white boxer who's caught up with a local white supremacy group and a former friend of his brother who is in debt with a local gangster and he inadvertently gets in the middle. He also has a new love who is a Muslim but he's Christian and it's causing conflict with her family. As with the original, there's an earnestness that makes the film watchable but also makes it absolutely laughable quite a bit throughout. The white supremacy stuff is awful and overblown and the relationship stuff has some silly moments. The heart is there but the movie is mostly boneheaded. Shame really. Also, wasn't this bloke going to marry Clare Bowen in the original? What happened to her?

Update for 8 September...

90s weekend once more, all fairly violent movies in their own way. Some quick synopses:

Jason's Lyric is a love story about a man haunted by the death of his father who looks after his mother and attempts to keep his jailbird brother on the straight and narrow. Then he meets Lyric (Jada Pinkett Smith) and he falls for her hard and she wants to leave this dead end town they live in but he doesn't want to leave his family. Of course it's going to end badly for someone. Fairly solid drama if a bit obvious and has a couple of decent sex scenes and probably the most we've seen of Jada, although there's seems to be a bit done to hide as much as possible in the scenes below. Being capping a bit of Jada recently, appears in quite a few 90s movies I've come across.

Gunmen is a B-action thriller where Christopher Lambert is busted out of jail by Mario Van Peebles as he apparently knows the whereabouts of the a huge amount of cash on a boat, well, he's dead brother does and he might be able to help. Meanwhile, Patrick Stewart gets a ruthless Denis Leary to track them down and get the money. Played as a buddy-buddy comedy with some quite violent action but is very B-grade despite the fairly decent cast and is OK at best.

Red Sun Rising is a Don 'The Dragon' Wilson vehicle but also possible the most blatantly racist movie I've seen from the 90s. Everyone seems to have a go at it and there's one character who seems to be there only to make terrible racist jokes before being humiliated and then killed off. Even Terry Farrell's character gets a fair bit of racism out of the way before teaming up with The Dragon and of course, falling for him. The plot is ridiculous, encased in a boring foreign cop coming to America to track down the villain plot, featuring characters who can harness their brain power to do all sorts of crazy martial arts shit. Oddly watchable despite all I've previously explained but probably better forgotten.

Update for 4 September...

Booksmart is a teen comedy where best friends Amy and Molly (Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein) are about to graduate from high school with Molly going to Yale University and Amy going to Botswana for aid work for the summer before going to college. Molly finds out that most of her peers partied hard and still got into prestigious colleges while she and Amy studied hard and never went to parties. The girls decide that they need to go to the biggest party of the year with out and proud lesbian Amy desperate to get with skater girl Ryan (Victoria Ruesga) although she's never actually kissed a girl. Except they have no idea where the party is and as they traverse the city going to other, less popular parties in the hope of finding out where the big party is, they get in little adventures with the omnipresent Gigi (Billie Lourd) never far away. Once at the big party, the girls find that they are out of their depth and that their dreams of the present and future may be further away than they thought while better options may be closer than they thought. OK comedy that gets better the longer it goes after an awkward beginning that's been called a female Superbad but is a far more restrained and less raunchy movie and is definitely it's own movie. There's a few laughs and a tenderness that you don't usually get in raunchy comedies and is not bad at all. If only the first 10-15 minutes or so wasn't so annoyingly awkward to watch.

Update for 1 September...

Another 90s update, mostly low budget horror stuff plus an early 90s Van Damme movie. Demon Wind is a low rent Evil Dead knock-off (and the original Evil Dead was already pretty low rent...), not as good and fairly boring while it keeps adding cast members to kill off. The Suckling is an ultra low rent thriller about an aborted fetus who becomes a monster and engulfs the brothel/illegal abortion clinic either killing all those inside or they kill each other first. Silly movie that is OK when it focuses on the monster which the makers seem to have spent more time on than the script. But there's a lot of shit to wade through, more than the aborted fetus does to become the beast. Night Owl is an ultra low budget vampire movie about a mopey vampire who fucks girls then bites and kills them. One day he kills the wrong girl in the sister of a local hood (John Leguizamo doing a solid for a friend) and he goes about trying to find her while the vampire slowly suffers in ennui. Very arty and a bit reminiscent of a movie that I capped recently for a recent 90s update Habit (although that was made later than this movie). A bit boring and haphazard but there's some interesting stuff going on; some live performances are fascinating and give the movie a lived in feel and for some reason there's an interview with B-movie starlet Caroline Munro which is pretty good but having said that, Night Owl is an acquired taste.
