Australian Classics for 29 August...
Well let's go really obscure with Australian Classics and pull out something rarely seen.
Feeling Sexy is a 45 minute short film from 1999 about Vicki (Susie Porter), an artist who falls for and marries Greg (Tamblyn Lord), but two kids down the track and the relationship is feeling stale. When Vicki takes an art teacher's job (for adults), she spies one of her students and falls head over lust for him and they begin an affair. She thinks that this will reignite her own spark, but it doesn't and she tells all to her husband who becomes distrusting of her. So, it is up to Vicki to find a way around the problems they are having and reignite the passion they once had and she does this in her own unique way. Interesting little film brought to life by the always great Susie Porter (of The Monkey's Mask, Welcome To Woop and pretty much every show on Australian TV at the moment) who pretty much owns this film. The character of Vicki has a great vibe about her (even when she does wrong), and her never give up attitude leads to an interesting ending.
Lots of little videos below. One of these days I'll get a decent copy of Welcome To Woop Woop. I wonder if it's as bad as I remember it to be.

Update for 25 August...
Girl Walks Into a Bar is a comedy about a bunch of people who meet each other over one night at various bars around LA. Francine (Carla Gugino) meets Nick (Zachary Quinto) who is getting Francine to kill his cheating wife. She asks for the money, $20,000, and agrees to meet back in 2 hours with the money. Turns out she's working undercover for Sam Salazar (Josh Hartnett). After Nick leaves, Francine is hit on by Henry (Aaron Tveit), but he strikes out, except he actually steals her wallet. With the help of the bartenders, Francine looks to track down a woman who was with Henry on a previous night who turns out to be Teresa (Emmanuelle Chriqui), an exotic dancer. Meanwhile, Nick goes to get his money which is with gangster Aldo (Danny DeVito), but he doesn't have it on him and to get his money, he is asked to follow a man who turns out to robbing a nude table tennis bar with a hostess (Rosario Dawson) who is working undercover. Not nearly as fun as either Women In Trouble or Elektra Luxx and most of characters are pretty unremarkable, this probably seemed like a good idea at the time, but there's not a whole lot interesting going on here. Meh...
As this film is only available via YouTube, the quality of the HD is slighty down, but it still better than Australian TV's attempt at it...

Update for 24 August...
Elektra Luxx follows on weeks after Women in Trouble with Elektra Luxx (Carla Gugino) quitting the porn industry getting ready to have a child and starting a class on having sex like a porn star. After one such class, she is approached by Cora (Marley Shelton), who, as we remember, was getting serviced by Elektra's boyfriend just before he died. Cora gives Elektra a folder of lyrics he wrote and asks for a favour. Cora wants Elektra to seduce her boyfriend Ben (Justin Kirk) so that she can catch then in the act, forgive him and feel less guilty about cheating on him. Elektra at first rejects this notion, but after dropping off a drunk Cora at her home, she passes a man in the stair well who enters her apartment. Elektra talks herself into doing the deed and into the apartment and seduces the man, but when it comes to getting caught, it turns out it's not her boyfriend, but Dellwood Butterworth (Timothy Olyphant), a private eye who is looking for the missing lyrics. Meanwhile, Bambi (Emmanuelle Chriqui) and Holly (Adrienne Palicki) have gone to Mexico for a holiday and Holly has developed feelings for Bambi while Bambi lucks into a way to get their trip for free as the spend some time with some rich men, something Holly doesn't want to do. Also, Bert Rodriguez (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a internet porn connoisseur with a special love for Elektra Luxx, is trying to stop his sister from putting saucy stuff of herself on his site and is about to find out that the cashier at the supermarket (Malin Akerman) has a crush on him. The focus on this film is more on Elektra (hence the title...) and all of her stuff is pretty darn good and fun, but when the focus is off her, the interest drops, which is a shame as Bambi and Holly are a lot of fun in Women in Trouble. In this film, they don't have a whole lot to do, and sure, the girl-girl stuff is welcome. Bert's stuff barely registers here, where he was better suited to the short sharp burst he has at the end of Women in Trouble. Not as good as Women in Trouble, but it still is fun in it's own way. Apparently there's a third film coming, Women in Ecstasy, hopefully that gels better than this film.
I've also added raw HD caps from Women in Trouble that I forgot yesterday. Girl Walks Into A Bar, an off shoot to this film, tomorrow.

Update for 23 August...
Over the next three days I'll be releasing stuff from a trilogy of films.
Women in Trouble is a comedy set over one day in LA that is about various women who are or will be connected. Elektra Luxx (Carla Gugino) is a renowned porn star who is told that she is pregnant. On her way out of the doctor's, she gets stuck in a lift with Doris (Connie Britton). During their talk, Doris admit to having a daughter that is looked after by her sister. Also working on the porn film (called Even Reverse Cowgirls Get the Blues) is Holly Rocket (Adrienne Palicki), a ditzy women who is having trouble going down on women (it makes her vomit). She joins her friend Bambi (Emmanuelle Chriqui) for a prostitution gig at a movie producers house, but are interrupted when gangsters attack their client. As they are running away, Holly is hit by a car driven by Maxine (Sarah Clarke) who is running away from her cheating husband (Simon Baker), who happens to be cheating on her with the mother of her patient. The three women decide to go to a bar and later join a bartender at a lesbian bar back at her place where Holly complains that Bambi hasn't acknowledged her birthday. Also on an airplane, flight attendant Cora (Marley Shelton) gets it on with rock star Nick Chapel (Josh Brolin) who is going out with Elektra Luxx, but during their dalliance, there is turbulence on the flight and it kills Nick. Later on Doris calls Elektra for a shoulder to cry on when her sister is in hospital because of a car crash as she was running away from being found out that she is having an affair with the husband of her daughter's psychiatrist. Hmm, as a massive Pedro Almodovar fan, it took me all of 2 minutes to work out that this film is heavily influenced by his films, particularly his 80s films. Not a bad thing in my book and I enjoyed the film a lot. Every one seems to be on the level and having a lot of fun (Adrienne Palicki's Holly Rocket is a blast and gets the best line, the last line of the film) and there is some great fun to be had. While I still prefer Almodovar's films to Sebastian Gutierrez's homage, Women in Trouble is well worth a look.
The follow up, Elektra Luxx, will be featured here tomorrow. Girl Walks into a Bar will be here Thursday, hopefully.

Australian Classics for 20 August...
For a while there I was doing one Australian Classic a week then I got distracted, so here's some catch up with a couple of 70s films.
The F.J. Holden is a 1977 teen drama set in the western suburbs of Sydney (mainly Bankstown) about the brief relationship between Kevin (Paul Couzens) and Anne (Eva Dickinson). One day cruising in his F.J. Holden car with his friend Bob, Kevin spots a girl sitting at a bus stop. That girl is Anne. They go around the block to come back and chat her up, but she and her friend are gone by the time they come back. Days later, Kevin and Bob spy her at a shopping mall and ask her to come out with them. She does and has sex with both of them, but builds a better rapport with Kevin and they start going out together. They go out for a while until an incident causes them to break up and Kevin doesn't take it well and causes trouble at a party. As far a plot goes, that's pretty much it as the film isn't worried about plot. It basically a character study of Kevin and Anne as young teenagers having a good time and their experiences with their families and friends and of course, the car, which is very central to the relationship and their new found freedom of entering adulthood. It's a very natural feeling film, almost documentary like, but doesn't feel forced or put on and is fascinated in the minutiae of life. The absence of things like conflict and melodrama enhance the tale because you just feel like you are peering into these people's life, not taking sides. And this film does it way better than the similar styled Dogs in Space, which I absolutely hated. Hmm...
The Plumber is a 1979 made-for-TV thriller from one of the Australia's best directors, Peter Weir, about a professor's wife Jill (Judy Morris), who gets an unexpected visit from a plumber Max (Ivar Kants). He has come to check the pipes in the bathroom, although no one seems to have called for him. He starts acting strangely including having a shower and this begins to alarm Jill. He then tells Jill that there's a problem with the pipes and he needs to come back the next day to fix it. All of a sudden, a quick check of the pipes becomes a lengthy project and the plumber's behaviour, including jokingly telling Jill he went to jail for rape, is really freaking Jill out. She gets her husband to speak to him and when he does, the plumber turns on the charm and Jill is forced to endure more of the plumber. Jill snaps and tells the plumber to stop mucking around and finish the job, which he does a quick patch up job. Of course, the plumbing has a massive failure and guess who has to come back and fix it. But, Jill is desperate to get rid of the plumber... Great little thriller from Weir who builds the tension quite well with not a lot to work with. Very much a low budget televisual feature but works expertly within those constraints. And holds up extremely well today.
Eva Dickinson in The F.J. Holden

Redux Friday doubles up...
Collages and videos from The Oxford Murders and Inconscientes are now available here.
You know, I haven't done a Spanish update in over a year, actually, I haven't watched a Spanish/Mexican/Latin film in a while. Not good enough...
Actually, I retract that. I watched a couple on the weekend. Time to watch some more... Haven't seen a new film with Leonor Watling in a while, just the ones I've seen before, including the immortal Son de Mar (reminds oneself to recap Son de Mar). Time to go a searchin'.

Australian Classics for 14 August...
Been a while since I've done an Australian Classic so while I can, I'll pump out a quick one.
Buddies is a long lost 1983 comedy about two life long friends Mike (Colin Friels) and Johnny (Harold Hopkins) make a living mining for sapphires in far north Queensland. All of a sudden, the rules regarding where you can mine are changed from first in to having to reserve the land and it leaves Mike and Johnny in the lurch and begins a war with local profiteer Andy (Dennis Miller). After fighting Andy off of their claimed spot, the mine the sapphires, sell them, get the money to buy a bulldozer and dig the shit out of the area leaving it unminable. And this really pissed off Andy and his thugs. With the money they have left, Mike and Johnny hire a plane to find good areas to mine for sapphires. But now Andy has bought out the local buyers and decides to under pay all the tinpot miners for major profit. Mike and Johnny cotton onto this and decide to artificially pump up the price to rip off Andy. They may have won this round, but Andy is now determined more than ever to get rid of the buddies. Oh, there's other stuff going on with a posh family setting up camp with the boys and feisty Stella (Kris McQuade) who keeps the boys in line, well when she's not plastered and horny. Buddies was barely released in cinema and video back in the day and pretty much disappeared until the recent DVD released. I don't know why because it's quite a fun little film that seems to have a lot more love for it than the similarly themed Rikky and Pete. Friels and Hopkins, who played love rivals in the previous year's Monkey Grip, work well together and there's a great bulldozer fight at the end of the film. Definitely worth a look.
That sex scene below was cut out of the movie for the cinema release to get a PG rating. Glad they put it back in... Mind you Kris McQuade has never been a shy girl (check out Alvin Purple and Alvin Rides Again for more information). Oh, that reminds me, must redo the Alvin Purple films one of these days.

Update for 12 August...
I haven't done a new Australian film for a couple of months, so here we go again...
Uninhabited is a deserted island horror thriller with Beth (Geraldine Hakewill of Wasted on the Young) and Harry (Henry James), who are having a 10 day holiday to a remote coral island in the Great Barrier Reef. Believing the island to be deserted and their own personal playground for the length of their stay, they set about enjoying themselves. After a swim and a post-coital kip, they wake up to find fresh footprints leading from the ocean to the trees. They briefly check for the person, but find nothing. The next day they continue their holiday but more strange things happen. They find that someone has used their camera to film them while they sleep. Things begin to go missing including their SAT phone. When a couple of foreign fisherman camp on the island, the couple accuse them of stealing their stuff. The fishermen take umbrage to this and after catching the couple snooping around their camp and boat, they tie them up. A cry them comes from the forest and when the fishermen investigate, they run from the island in fright. It seems there's a ghost on the island. And it's got plans for Beth and Harry. From director Bill Bennett, a rather eclectic director, this film is rather insignificant and never really reaches any heights. The ending is rather obvious too. Hmm, I wish I could say something more substantial, but it's just that type of film.
I will say that Geraldine Hakewill reminds me of a young Claudia Karvan, here and in Wasted on the Young, which is a good thing in my book, being a big fan of Claudia. Hopefully we'll see more from her in the future.
Oh and I can't whinge about another Australian film getting released overseas before in its home country, thankfully it was released 4 days before being released in the UK. I can whinge about not getting a Bluray release here, but it is in the UK. Australia really is a Bluray backwater...

Update for 10 August...
How 'bout another New Zealand film? How obscure do you want to go?
This is Not a Love Story is a light comedy about Belinda (Sarah Smuts-Kennedy) a writer who comes to Wellington to get her work published. She befriends an old lady across the way who has an interest in her writing and also keeps meeting up with couple Tony and Suzanne, a precious actor and an artist. When the old lady dies, something changes in Belinda and she decides to come onto Tony, which he has no problems reciprocating. With Suzanne away painting, Belinda takes over and moves into Tony's life, which again he doesn't seem to have a problem with. When Suzanne comes back, Belinda confesses all to her and that's where the fun begins. Well, not really. This film is rather slight and forgettable with not a lot to recommend. There's very much a twee feeling here which is very New Zealand and probably doesn't translate well outside of NZ. I called it a light comedy because while it ain't funny, it's more going for a more amusing vibe, which it really isn't either. But there's a quite out of the blue bottomless nude scene from Sarah, so there's that I s'pose.

Redux Friday offers a quickie...
Collages and videos from And When Did You Last See Your Father? are now available here.
Just a quick HD update today. Also, there's apparently a deleted scene where Carey Mulligan briefly shows her breasts, but no such thing exists on either the bare bones Australian DVD or the bare bones Australian Bluray. Typical...

Update for 3 August...
Giving out some love for our brothers and sisters across the Tasman today with this and The Insiders Guide To Love series over on JMTV.
Crooked Earth is a 2001 New Zealand drama thriller that begins at the funeral for a local Maori patriarch. His son, Will (Temuera Morrison channelling Jake the Muss), has been dishonourably discharged from military service and comes home to the funeral and meets up with his daughter Ripeke (Jaime Passier-Armstrong). The death of the patriarch has left a struggle for the head of the family between Will and his brother Kahu. Will is reluctant as he had left this life, so Kahu has no problem taking over as it allow him to flaunt his power for his criminal ways (turns out Kahu a drug dealer). When a local land deal that was first struck up by their father is hijacked by Kahu, Will is forced into action to stop his brother reeking havoc in the area with his new drug dealing friends. And Kahu is not going down without a fight, even if it means killing his brother and his niece. Solid film about the new ways mixing with the old, but Once Were Warriors did that way better. Good, but not great.
I've said it before that I have a few New Zealand films piled up, so I'll try to release some more in the coming weeks. I've got a few Australian updates I really should get around to as well...

Update for 2 August...
A quick little update today.
Hobby Farm (renamed Chained in the US) is an Australian thriller (meaning it hasn't been released in Australia yet) about Julian (Paul Murphy) who has just gotten out of jail after a 5 year stretch and has been rewarded for his loyalty by being allowed to run 'the farm', an illegal brothel populated with Eastern European sex slaves. The place is a playpen of the select friends of the Senti family (Gerard Kennedy plays the father, Vince Sorrenti plays the son) and they have let Louie (Travis McMahon) in. Except he's an undercover cop who wants to shut it down. The arrival of a new girl Tatiana (Jessica Turner) sparks something in Julian and he's had enough of the place. The arrival of the thugish Lou further pushes Julian and when Julian takes a complete prick Fedi to the farm, all hell breaks loose as Fedi bashes one of the girls and Julian takes Fedi, a made man and slits his throat. This is not going to end well for Julian, but he's taking everyone with him. There's an interesting enough story going on here, but the film has the usual limitations of a low budget film. The direction is all over the place and some of the actors are pretty bad, but the story holds up well enough. Not great, but watchable if you want a violent crime film.
