Redux Friday keeps digging deep...
Collages and videos from The Uninvited are now available here.
Bwwaahhhaaaahahaa, couldn't resist on the front page. Emily Browning in Sleeping Beauty (or variations of) is the most searched for term for this site, ten times more than anything else. Look it's a while off, so patience...
In the meantime, hopefully you'll enjoy this HD redux of the supernatural horror remake of a Korean film. Boy does Emily look cute in this film...

Update for 27 July...
Well, it's time to get back on the horse or just make a new series of collages and videos, whichever is more comfortable...
No Strings Attached is a bawdy romantic comedy about Emma and Adam (Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher) who seem to meet up with each other in various moments in time, but never hooked up. After Adam finds out that his ex-girlfriend (Ophelia Lovibond) is going out with his former sitcom star dad (Kevin Kline), he goes on a bender and dials all the girls in his phone until he finds one who wants to have sex. The next morning Adam wakes up naked in Emma's apartment, although they did not have sex, but after a moment together, they do have sex and from there they begin a tenuous relationship that revolves around being fuck buddies. Which is fine for a while as both aren't looking for the complications of a relationship. But, over time it becomes clear that both Emma and Adam do actually have romantic feelings towards each other and after thwarting the other's romances, they finally begin a relationship together. The film attempts to look into the world of fuck buddies, but being a romantic comedy where they must get together, it never gets too deep. And that's the problem, there's barely any conflict, never any doubt and barely any laughs to get through it all. Ashton Kutcher always plays Ashton Kutcher, but Natalie Portman seems to be having a ball playing an actual comic character. All the supporting characters might as well be non-entities, in fact some characters are truly baffling (namely the characters Lake Bell and Cary Elwes and the 'just all of a sudden happens' relationship between Greta Gerwig's and Jake Johnson's characters) as there's seems to have been a lot cut out in post. Bah, I'm a grumpy prick, aren't I...
And as you know there's Friends With Benefits coming out/already out with the exact same plot. You know what I reckon these films should be about, that the 'fuck buddies' try to have real relationships but can't break the 'fuck buddy' relationship so it messes up their real relationships. Come on, there's gotta be more comedy and/or heart break in this plot than two 'fuck buddies' falling in love. Yeah, I know, I'm being miserable, get over it, whatever...

Redux Friday...
Collages and videos from Alpha Dog now available here.
Still unmotivated but I've got some hard drive space to clear...
The Alpha Dog Bluray has been sitting on my hard drive for over 2 years and gathering dust and there was a request for the old videos, so it was time for new ones. Sure, everyone seems to have had a go at it, as I did when it first come out, but it's time to upgrade. Sadly, the bluray treatment is fucking awful adding to the already terrible colour schemes of the film. I think this was one the 1st generation of Blurays, so that explains it's problems to an extent. The Bluray is incredibly dark, the scenes below have been brightened quite a bit and some of the colouring is fixed (although that a bit of a lost cause). All I can say is I tried. No caps as yet, I thought I has already done them, but alas no. Might redo some collages if I can be bothered too.
They'll be more HD reduxes over the weekend, all from Australian films, most of which not available on Bluray in Australia, but elsewhere.

Update for 20 July...
Another quick series today. I really am unmotivated at the moment...
Arctic Blast is an Australian weather thriller set for the most part in Hobart (a rare excursion to Tasmania for a film) that begins when a solar eclipse bizarrely causes a gush of ice cold wind from the Antarctic to rise quickly to the southern most parts of the world and is fast approaching Tasmania where weather expert Jack Tate and his daughter (Indiana Evans) and his ex-wife (Alexandra Davies) live. Jack is the world's only hope as he comes up with an ambitious plan to stop the ice from engulfing the world while trying to save his daughter and ex-wife and co-worker who needs insulin. Or something... Director Brian Trenchard-Smith has had better days, but at least this isn't as bad as some of his other most recent stuff, particularly Tyrannosaurus Azteca aka Aztec Rex, which is so awful to the point of unwatchable, even with a half naked Dichen Lachman running around the entire film. This film actually looks like it has some sort of budget which means it doesn't look completely awful, but is typically cliched and rather uninteresting with the result in no doubt. And how can you get Indiana Evans to a beach and not get her in a bikini. Come on!

Australian Classics for 16 July...
Here's a movie that is my warm-up to the new season of Underbelly.
Squizzy Taylor is a 1982 crime bio-pic about Melbourne gangster Les 'Squizzy' Taylor (played by dance man David Atkins, again proving my theory that anyone could star in an Australian film in the 1980s), a notorious underground figure who rose from petty thief to running prostitutes to the top of the tree in the criminal underworld. He did this by managing to have great influence over the police investigating his crimes, rigging juries in his trials and by writing his own stories about his criminal experiences and using a local writer as a stooge to put these chronicles in the local 'The Sun' newspaper. He also intimated his rivals through frequent drive-by shootings. And he managed to be a very intimidating man despite being an incredibly short (about 5 foot 2). The film plays fast and loose with the facts (when do bio-pics not) and seems to go to his highlights without any real explanation as to how he rose so quickly to the top of the tree, especially how he become the head of a gang so quickly. Where the film is at it's best is when it is showing the Squizzy as the man who likes the attention he is getting. He commands the courtroom when he's up. There's a bizarre scene where he's starring in his own movie (as a jockey... hahahaha). And the period attention to 1920s Melbourne is astonishing as the makers don't shy away from complex location shooting (I'm not sure how accurate it is). Overall, I do think the film suffers because of it's lead who really isn't convincing when he has to do the tough stuff and there are times I swear the film is going break into song. And the film doesn't miss an opportunity to throw in a dance scene including over the final credits. This isn't a fully successful film, but it has it's moments. I wonder how Underbelly will portray Squizzy Taylor and the period setting (interiors look good in the previews, exteriors though...).

Update for 13 July...
Who wants a quickie?
Spin is brisk, day in the life of comedy drama set around the inhabitants of an LA club. Ryan (Patrick Flueger), the club DJ, has a major crush on his best friend Cassie (Lauren German), even more so when they passionately kissed the night before. The next morning, Ryan has woken up naked with Apple (Katie Cassidy). But tonight, things are about to go haywire for Ryan. The girl who has a crush on him, Sarah (Angela Trimbur) tries to seduce, but it caught and the rumour spreads like wildfire. Or so he thinks. Cassie leaves the club, apparently having heard about what Ryan did, with Tony Russo (Michael Biehn), a big time mobster and Ryan panics. He chases after her, but she chews him out. Disillusioned at the thought of losing Cassie, he heads back to the club. His drink is spiked with some new chemical and he dies... for a little while. Then we follow Aubrey (Bijou Phillips), then Mick (Adam Campbell), then Cassie, Apple and finally Zeke. Feeling a lot like an attempt at emulating Go, Spin comes and goes in 75 minutes, which is to it's advantage. The stories are fun, but fairly predictable and it does have a fair bit of repetition, but on the whole, Spin is well worth a look.

Update for 12 July...
How 'bout a horror film?
Fertile Ground is a supernatural horror film focusing on a couple, Emily and Nate (Leisha Hailey and Gale Harold), who move to Nate's family house in the country when Emily has a miscarriage. The move seems to invigorate the couple and Nate seems to producing great paintings. Emily then finds out she is pregnant again and then things begin to change. Emily begins to see visions of previous inhabitants of the house and Nate becomes distant and moody. Turns out a number of people have died at the house and it seems that Emily and Nate are the next victims. An OK haunted house thriller that doesn't set the world on fire, isn't terribly scary, but is driven well by a solid performance by Leisha Hailey.

Australian Classics for 10 July...
A couple of brief Australian Classics comedies today.
Rikky and Pete is a typical Nadia Tass/David Parker comedy about a brother Pete (Stephen Kearney) and sister Rikky (Nina Landis) who are struggling to make a living in Melbourne. Pete makes gadgets and is also a menace to the local police. Rikky has a geology degree, but doesn't have a job except for the occasional music gig. When their rich parents cut them off, they decide to go to the minefields in Broken Hill and make a go of it up there. All the while they are followed by a cop (Bill Hunter) who wants Pete for himself. In Broken Hill, Rikky gets a job as a geologist while Pete lies his way to a mining job. They make friends with a various bunch of misfits and this results in starting their own little mining adventure which reaps some benefits. This is a strange misfire from Tass and Parker (who have also made Malcolm, The Big Steal, Amy and recently back together for Matching Jack). It fits their formula perfectly, but the plot really isn't interesting and the lead characters are largely forgettable. As usual, the supporting casts adds plenty to the film, particularly Filipina actress Tetchie Agbayani and Bill Hunter, but all the major stuff is just lame. And I say this as someone who loves Malcolm and The Big Steal, the ultimate Claudia Karvan film. Bah...
Mr. Accident is the 3rd and (for the moment) final film from Yahoo Serious, who went out of favour so fast, he's barely remembered in this country. Roger (Yahoo Serious) works at an egg plant and is incredibly clumsy causing mayhem wherever he goes. Sunday (Helen Dallimore) is a country girl who quit her chicken plucking job to make it in the city after winning the local beauty contest. They meet when she enters the wrong apartment, his apartment and they are meant to be together. His boss (David Field) is also her ex-boyfriend an evil bastard who wants to lace the eggs with nicotine to get people addicted to cigarettes. So, it's up to Roger to save the day and win the girl. Or something... By this stage (1999), Yahoo Serious was completely out of favour with the public, which is strange because Young Einstein was a massive film in it's day and it was everywhere in 1988. His second film, Reckless Kelly, took so long to edit that even Terrence Malick would have told him to hurry up. None of Serious's films are available on DVD in this country (not even Young Einstein), which is baffling considering the no name films that have had a release. Serious seems to be a victim of his own high standards. And Mr. Accident is barely remembered here, but is in no way a failure as a film as it's a relatively amusing slapstick comedy that is light and fluffy and brisk. Not a memorable film, but not the disaster that Reckless Kelly is.

Update for 7 July...
As I said in the previous update, not really in the mood to do anything big, but I need to clear some space, so it's time for more to dump.
Heh, now that I come to think of it, it's been a while since I've seen these two films, so I'm having trouble remembering exactly what they are about. I remember not really being a fan of either, particularly The Tortured, a turgid revenge thriller about torturing the killer of their child. Oh, there's that stupid kidnap scene, I remember that now, man that was ridiculously over-the-top. And Cuckoo is a rather unremarkable film, something about Laura Fraser's character hearing things that are making her go crazy. Oh, and Richard E. Grant's in it, playing another evil doctor type. Something like that...

Update for 5 July...
Not really in the mood to do anything big, so here goes nothing.
Burning Palms is 5 short stories set in LA that involve consequences for one's actions. The 15 year-old daughter (Emily Meade) of Dennis (Dylan McDermott) is back in town and meets his new girlfriend Deidra (Rosamund Pike), who is horrified that the daughter is sexually precocious and very close to her father. Ginny (Jamie Chung) is asked by her boyfriend to try something new during sex. Two gay men decide to adopt a child from Africa, but she turns out not as they imagined. Some spoilt brats decide to investigate who stole the placenta of the now dead child of their Latin maid (Paz Vega) and find out something more shocking. A woman (Zoe Saldana) is raped in her home and finds the perpetrator's wallet, but instead of turning him in, she wants something else from him. Inconsistent throughout, some tales are interesting, but they are never really that great. Feels like it's more in love with the more 'shocking' elements of the tale than with telling anything meaningful. Ah well...
