Update for 26 February...
A quick update from a couple of new Aussie genre films today. Neither of which is currently released in Australia. Natch...
Crawlspace is a sci-fi thriller set in Pine Gap, a secret military base in Australia that has been offline for over 24 hours. A group of special forces troops have been sent in to kill all test subjects and extract the scientific team but when they get there, they encounter Eve (Amber Clayton), one of the subjects they were to kill. Except for one thing; she just happens to be one of the special forces troops' wife. His dead wife... Romeo (Ditch Davey) convinces the team not to kill her, but it's becoming increasingly clear that there is much more to Eve. Members of the team begin dying in psychotic fits, imagining things that aren't happening and killing themselves to stop the hell they are experiencing. But, why is this happening? It seems the scientific team have been performing some mad science and may have made the perfect subject in Eve. Surprisingly good little thriller with a pretty decent cast of sort-of known Aussie character actors and some excellent visual effects and production design for a low budget film. The story is also pretty intriguing even if it relies on familiar tropes. Not a bad little film indeed.
The Caretaker is a thriller set in the middle of a vampire apocalypse, mostly set in rural Victoria. Dr. Ford Grainger (Mark White) arrives at a mansion on a farm to tend to Lester's (Colin MacPherson) mother. Lester is unaware of the arising vampire apocalypse and offers the doctor a room to stay to help his mother. But, the doctor kills his mother because she is a vampire. But, there's one more thing; the doctor is also a vampire. Meanwhile, a feuding couple Annie and Guy (Anna Burgess and Clint Dodwell) are having a camping holiday also unaware of the apocalypse. Also, Ron (Lee Mason) is a firebrand leader of a father's rights group which is attacked by vampires. Annie, Guy and Ron end up at Lester's mansion, where the doctor makes a deal with them. He'll protect them from the vampires, if they protect from the humans. This is not going to end well... Despite it's obvious budget restrictions, there's something very cinematic about this film. Sure it is clunky at times, but it looks gorgeous and the story is well-handled feeling a fair bit like Night of the Living Dead, which is a good thing. With a bigger budget and better cast, this could be a genuine cult classic, it's really that interesting, hopefully it gets a lotta love on DVD.
Some really good genre stuff coming out of Australia at the moment and these two films can be added to the ever-growing list. And as a massive genre fan, it makes me very happy indeed.

Update for 24 February...
Something new for once.
About Cherry is a drama Angelina (Ashley Hinshaw), a teenage girl who is looking to get out of her home situation. Her father is dead and her mother (Lili Taylor) is a drunk and there looks like there is no hope. Then, her skanky boyfriend asks her if she would do a porn shoot for a friend of his. She reluctantly accept and things go from there. With her best friend Andrew (Dev Patel), Angelina moves to San Francisco where they share a bed in friend Vaughn's small apartment. Angelina gets a job as a waitress in a strip club, where she meets Francis (James Franco), a sleazy looking sort of lawyer and she falls for him. Angelina sees all the strippers making more money than her, so she decides to start doing some real porn. In porn, Angelina becomes Cherry and is welcomed into the world of porn, not in the least by lesbian director Margaret (Heather Graham) who instantly falls for her and goes well on the way to ruin her relationship because of Cherry. But, as it always seems to be with porn, things start to crack as her career takes off and her relationships with Andrew and Francis crack under that pressure. So, how will Angelina/Cherry get through all this..? About Cherry is a film that has it's heart in the right place, but is too jumbled to pull off the story it is trying to tell. Neither aggressively for or against porn, which works to the film's advantage, but the stories with the side characters in Angelina's/Cherry's life aren't fully fleshed out and the ending seems to be more self-serving than earned. A failure, but not without it's plusses, the biggest one being Ashley Hinshaw, who is not only absolutely gorgeous, but is an definite actress to watch for in the future as she is excellent in this film (also good in her limited role in Chronicle).
I also capped Ashley Hinshaw from the film Rites of Passage about a year ago if you would like a look.

Australian Classics for 19 February...
Back to the 90s for Australian Classics today.
Mr Reliable, the second of two films released in the 90s about the Wally Mellish hostage siege in 1968 (first being Shotgun Wedding), is a 1996 comedy. Wally Mellish (Colin Friels) has just been released from prison and has decided to go straight. After buying a derelict house, which he fixes up, he meets Beryl (Jacqueline McKenzie) and they fall in love. So, with her young son, they move in together. Looking to spruce up the place with ornaments, he goes to the junkyard and steals a Jaguar hood ornament and goes home. Next morning, the police come around, attempt to kick the door in and Wally gets one of his guns and fire a warning shot. Then, he get Beryl and her son and threatens to kill them if the police stay. The cops call in a hostage situation, but, there hasn't been a hostage situation for many years and none of the cops know what to do. The police commissioner decides to take on the job personally, but even he doesn't seem to know what to do. Meanwhile, the media and a large crowd surround the area trying to get in on the fun. During the hostage situation, Wally and Beryl decide to get married and Wally's dog is shot and the crowd becomes a bit of a circus while being on Wally's side. All the while, the siege plays out comically, becoming a big embarrassment for the police only to be topped by a truly bizarre ending. For a while there through the 80s and fair part of the 90s, director Nadia Tass and her cinematographer/producer David Parker (although not producer on this film) could do no wrong. Together they made great Australian films like Malcolm, Rikky and Pete (well...), The Big Steal and then this charming little comedy. The real life incident this film is based on was perfect fodder for a comic film, hence two films in 3 years on the incident, with Mr. Reliable being the more successful, but not by the same sort of success as the three aforementioned films. This is a pretty funny film that pokes major fun at the incompetency of it all and fits into the Tass/Parker formula perfectly, even if it takes very large liberties with how it all happened. But, that ending, if it didn't happen for real, would be an extremely large leap of faith. The fact that it actually happened it truly one of the most embarrassing things the police and government have ever done. It would never happen today, that's for sure. Shame that the Tass/Parker partnership has a very checkered record post-Mr. Reliable with the forgotten drama Amy, then 11 years later the mildly diverting Matching Jack, plus bizarrely, a whole bunch of filler Lifetime TV movies. They had such potential...

Update for 18 February...
A few weeks back I threatened to cap some short films, well, last night's broadcast of the Tropfest short film festival is a good place to start. Really only one film to cap from, a short film called Scene 16 (directed by actress Katie Wall) with some brief nudity and major pokies action from Emma Booth, which was a nice surprise. I couldn't be bothered watching it last night because after the first 15 minutes of inane host banter and starfucking, it was enough for anyone to kick in their TV (or in my case, capture stick).
Don't have a lot that's going to come out in the immediate future, so I thought this is a quick series, might as well put something out while I'm setting up the next few weeks of capping. Plenty of HD stuff on the horizon with some good nudity too. Maybe an Australian Classic or two as well. So look out for that.

Update for 14 February...
Here's an Australian film entirely in German. Yeah, I'm baffled too...
Lore is an Australian-German co-production set in the days after the German surrender in World War 2. A well-off German family is about to fall apart. When a German officer leaves his family without taking them with him, he leaves them to fend for themselves and worse when he turns up dead and his wife can't take it and leaves her 5 children all by themselves. Teenager Hannelore aka Lore (Saskia Rosendahl) is left in charge of her siblings including her younger sister Lieschen, twins brothers and a newly arrived baby in desperate need of her mother. So, Lore is forced out into post-war Germany, trying to get to Hamburg to find her grandmother. Lore keeps the kids hopes of seeing her parents again by saying that they will meet them at their grandmother's house, but this not going to happen. Basically, it's everyone for themselves with Germany split up into different regions and Hamburg being in another region. At a school house, Lore meets Thomas, a mysterious young Jewish man who starts following the family and ends up helping them even though Lore has been taught to never trust the Jewish people. This is going to be a tough journey and with the remnants of Nazi Germany still pervading and a wartime mentality amongst the soldiers they come across, illusions are well and truly about to be shattered. I'm a sucker for a miserablist film, but there's something about Lore that just didn't click with me. It's not a bad film and it's rare for film to be set in the immediate post-war environment, but I felt distant the entire time. Directed by Cate Shortland, who sure knows her miserablist stuff (Somersault, her only feature film which was bizarrely 10 years ago, The Silence and the short film Joy) does good work here, but if your looking for uplifting, this ain't it.
Normally, I wouldn't cap this film, hell, I'd doubt I'd would've watched it if it wasn't partially Australian, but I have that completist mentality, so it was always going to be capped.

Update for 11 February...
How 'bout another Australian film?
The Wedding Party is a comedy about a family that is full of secrets that is about to be thrown into chaos by the marriage of their youngest son Steve (Josh Lawson). Steve is in an on-off relationship with Jacqui (Kestie Morassi), which is currently off. He is also in desperate need of money because his business is going down the plughole. So, Steve responds to an ad in the paper about becoming the husband of a Russian woman Anna (Isabel Lucas) who wants a quick way to citizenship for a cool $25,000. Now, Steve is getting married and has to tell his family, except for the part that it's fake. And boy do they take to this whole wedding thing with his father (Steve Bisley) wanting to pay for the whole thing, within reason... But, this is a family that all has it's issues. Steve's father wont tell his mother (Heather Mitchell) that he has a new woman (Rhonda Burchmore) because it will crush her. His sister Lisa (Nadine Garner) is having issues of a sexual nature with her husband Tommy (Adam Zwar). His brother Colin (Geoff Paine) has decided to explore his love of bondage and whips, without his long suffering wife Jane's (Essie Davis) knowledge. And their teenage daughter Eve (Nikita Leigh-Pritchard) is discovering sex. Oh and Anna has a rough looking Russian boyfriend (Nikolai Nikolaeff) who is totally against the idea of marriage. All the while, Steve is deciding whether he wants to be with Jacqui, all without telling her what's actually happening. Whoops!! Pretty conventional romantic comedy with a pretty solid cast, but nothing you haven't seen before. Nothing you'd go 4 hours out of your way to see in a cinema, like I stupidly did a few months back. Surely, I have better things to do...

Update for 7 February...
Something new from an Australian film.
Mental is a comedy about the Moochmore family, who are about to have a crisis. Shirley Moochmore (Rebecca Gibney), the Sound of Music obsessed matriarch is having a nervous breakdown. Her rarely seen husband, local mayor Barry (Anthony LaPaglia) takes her to Woolongong aka a mental institution, but now he has a problem and it's a big one. He has 5 troublesome daughters and they need looking after and he sure as hell doesn't want to do it. So, he finds a drifter on the side of the road and gives her the job. Shaz (Toni Collette) and her loyal dog tackle the problem head on and attempts to get the girls to take back control. Except for one thing; Shaz isn't exactly, well sane. Meanwhile, eldest daughter Coral (Lily Sullivan) has a new job as a helper in a shark exhibit run by weirdo Trevor (Liev Schreiber), who seems to know Shaz very well. Oh and Coral has fallen for lifeguard Trout (Sam Clark). So, can Shaz save the Moochmore family from itself. Hmmm... from the director of Muriel's Wedding, Mental has more than a little in common than Welcome To Woop Woop, not in the least that both use songs from classical musicals in both movies. Plenty of Sound of Music songs in this film. But also, the Aussieness of both films is amped up to 100 and that's the first problem, what is it about Australian films that need to be that exaggerated? I have no problem with over-the-top gross out films, but Mental has some utterly embarrassing moments that almost kill the film. It's not all bad, there are laughs but for the most part it's just... I dunno...
Also, love Sophie Lee briefly turn up, it's been a while. And the nice surprise of Lily Sullivan getting naked.

Update for 6 February...
Haven't been feeling it the past few days, so here's a quick series I've tossed off to tide you over.
The Apparition is a supernatural thriller about a young couple Kelly (Ashley Greene) and Ben (Sebastian Stan), who have moved in together in the investment house owned by Kelly's parents. Immediately, strange things begin to happen, like doors being left wide open when the place is locked up and things just dying like the dog next door and a cactus plant. It seems that this presence in the house may have been a by-product of the work Ben is doing with his buddy Patrick (Tom Felton) and it seems that it's something sinister and is a force that is going to take over their entire house until Patrick has a plan. Oh dear, this one's from the Pulse school of just make some shit up that's complicated so that people don't question the rubbish idea you have. And then have an utterly perplexing ending cos hey, why stop now... Yep, I get attracted to these PG-13 horror stinkers for some reason and they're usually always garbage, but The Apparition is on an even lower level than the usual.

Redux Friday for 2 February...
While I'm going back to early last decade, my bizarre obsession with dicey high school teen movies continues. Whatever It Takes. from the year 2000, isn't even subtle about it's approach to the same old story of boy wants popular girl but can only get her with the help of popular guy who wants 'plough' boy's nice next door neighbours to add to his list. And that's fine, but boy is such a blind fool throughout the movie that if he had half a brain, he'd look next door and that's the end of that chapter. Bah!
And again looking back at the cast and whether or not they kicked on, well, the popular guy is played by James Franco (which I completely forgot about), so there you go. The others (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe, Marla Sokoloff, Shane West) have all had OK careers and support from Aaron Paul who's going pretty darn well at the moment. So, not too shabby follow up from this movie.
Nice deleted scene with Jodi Lyn O'Keefe as a bonus below.

Australian Classics Redux Friday for 1 February...
Well, I've got a whole heap of old Aussie films I've been getting through, including a few films I've already capped, so better to get them out there all at once rather than sitting on them forever. All these films below were first capped in 2002/3 and were released in 2000-2002, so an eternity ago. Anyway, after rewatching them, my opinion of each hasn't actually changed. Looking For Alibrandi is still a pretty solid teen drama, He Died With A Felafel In His Hand is still an interesting failure and considering it's from the guy that directed Dogs in Space, seemed like the perfect film for him. Ah well! And Blurred is still a not very good teen film set in Schoolies week. And I love how you go all the way to Schoolies to party and a group of blokes hire a stripper when it's a non-stop party outside...
Also, I like to see in teen films of yesteryear which actors kick on and are still going strong and which ones have disappeared off the scene. Blurred is so all over the place, in fact all of the leads are still either barely known or have disappeared altogether (sadly, one's dead) and only Gyton Grantley has kicked on significantly (debatably Matthew Newton before all the troubles...). And there's some real disappointing disappearances too like Nathalie Roy (also recently capped in Sample People) and Charlotte Rees (who after the classic terrible film Let Me Not in 2007 turned up again recently as a cop in last year's The King is Dead and must remind myself to find Moloch where I'm sure she was nude in it). Then there's Jessica Gower who's barely being in film/TV since Blade. Mind you Australian film/TV history is full of actresses that made a couple of things then moved on (as this site proves time and time again, sadly...).
Not too many teen films made recently, so it's going to be tougher to make comparisons on this site in 10 years time. Ugh, I think I just made myself depressed...
