Australian Classics for 31 January...

A couple of quick Aussie Classics today that I probably should have released yesterday.

Both are very different films. Cosi is a 1996 comedy about an out of work man (Ben Mendelsohn) who takes a job as a director of a play at a mental institution and the fun and frivolity that comes with that. Trojan Warrior is a 2002 action comedy about a crook who rats out some big cheese and who has gets bounty on his head. His friend (former kickboxing champ Stan 'The Man' Longinidis) attempts to help him survive the weekend with all of Melbourne's crook desperate for the bounty. Cosi is an OK film, a little heavy on the mental stuff, but watchable. Trojan Warrior is utterly silly and if you're not in the mood for it, you'll hate it, but I liked it even if it becomes 'spot the Melbourne identity' after a while (including a baffling Chopper Read cameo playing a character named Erik Bana???). Did I say that Trojan Warrior is completely silly?

Australian Classics for 30 January...

A quick Aussie Classic today.

The Settlement is a 1983 drama about two drifters Kearney and Martin (Bill Kerr and John Jarratt), who go from town to town looking for work and when there's none, they rig bare knuckle fights or perform light scams on easy targets. When they land in Cedar Creek, things are about to change dramatically for the two. Although there's no work and the local cop has warned them to move on as soon as arrive at the pub. They bunker down at an abandoned farmhouse just outside of town and then Kearney gets sick. Joycie (Lorna Lesley), a barmaid at the local pub is sympathetic to them and after rejecting the advances of her boss who then fires her, she joins Kearney and Martin and helps Kearney get better. But, you know what happens in small towns, they talk and there is a general disapproval of how they are living, particularly when it becomes known that Joycie was possibly once a prostitute. And then push comes to shove and the town wants them out. Gentle drama that doesn't seem to have any lofty ambitions, but is affable enough to get by. The three leads are a fun watch and their opposition is suitably nasty. Nothing special, but not bad either.

And, damn, I can't work out who the unknown girl is below, but she looks sort of familiar and sure is pretty. The credits to The Settlement are pretty awful only going about 10 deep before just listing names and that doesn't help. Ah well...

Australian Classics Redux for 24 January...

For some strange reason I got the urge to watch Sample People. Big mistake...

Sample People is a 2000 ensemble drama thriller set in Sydney but filmed in Adelaide revolving around the world of a bunch of people who frequent a nightclub over 1 day and 2 nights. Space cadet Len (Nathan Page) works in a fast food store and hates it would rather be at the club where he gets to see his space cadet girlfriend DJ Lush Puppy (Nathalie Roy) who is the club DJ and barely knows he exists. Meanwhile his housemates Cleo (Paula Arundell) and Sem (Joel Edgerton) are lovers but are about to have a bump in the road in the form of fey goth John (Ben Mendelsohn). Club owner TT (David Field) has a big deal going down and he entrusts Andy (Simon Lyndon) to do the business, but TT's girl Jess (Kylie Minogue), who's having an affair with Andy, wants Andy to steal it all so they can run away. Finally, a couple of arseholes are bored shitless and run amok, including beating up John, hitting on DJ Lush Puppy and other such things. And it's all going to come to a head at the fast food store. Blurggghhh!!! From the period of Australian films where filmmakers desperately tried to grab the audience of late-teens, early twentysomethings and rip off Tarantino at the same time. Man, that was a bad time and Sample People is another forgettable addition to this. Every character except for possibly DJ Lush Puppy is impossible to like and annoying at every turn. And just when I thought there couldn't be a more terrible ending than Bullseye (see below), along comes Sample People with it's double robbery including Len robbing his workplace and then getting his job back, but not before shooting the robber with a gun he stole from a cop while using his girl DJ Lush Puppy as a body shield. Mind you, I haven't seen True Love and Chaos in a while but I remember that ending being pretty awful. There is one good thing though and that's indie bands redoing some great 70s Aussie songs for the soundtrack, which I remember being the in thing for indie bands at the time. But, oh boy, what a stinker! Why did I get the urge to watch this again? No wonder for the last 10 years there's a hundred copies of the Sample People DVD rotting away at any JB Hi-Fi.

I will say that it was great to see Nathalie Roy in something cos it's been a while since she's being in a TV show or film. Shame she never took off.

Update for 22 January...

OK, who's up for some lesbian action?

Breaking The Girls is a thriller that follows Sara Ryan (Agnes Bruckner), a girl currently on a college scholarship to a rich college and she seems to have chemistry with Eric (Shawn Ashmore), much to the chagrin of his girlfriend Brooke (Shanna Collins). One night while working at a bar, she meets Alex (Madeline Zima), but in the process of the night Sara gets fired from her job directly as a result of Brooke. Waiting outside the bar is a drunk Alex who wants Sara to come with, which she reluctantly drives her home because of her state. And they instantly hit it off, which sets back any chemistry with Eric. Over the next few days, Brooke continues to stifle Sara, getting her scholarship cancelled and getting her kicked out of the dorm. Sara moves in with Alex and Sara is about to find out that Alex is fighting her own demons; her mother's died mysteriously and all that is left is her stepfather and his new fling Nina (Kate Levering). One night, Alex hatches a plan of 'criss-cross', she murders Brooke while Sara murders her stepfather, which Sara sort of agrees with. Alex goes ahead and murders Brooke and suspicion falls on Sara who is horrified by this, but Alex has rigged it so that evidence could become available linking Sara to Brooke's murder. So, Sara reluctantly agrees to off the stepfather, but Alex has already killed him and Sara is caught redhanded at the scene. But, this is not over. An obvious knock-off of Strangers on a Train, which I think is Hitchcock's best film (yes, even better than Psycho and Vertigo), Breaking The Girls starts off steady enough and then once Sara is framed, this film goes off the rails so fast with plot twist after plot twist that gets more ludicrous by the minute. Strangers on a Train kept it simple. Breaking The Girls gets itself tangled in a knot, so much so that it doesn't make sense. Oh, what a mess...

Update for 21 January...

Still working through the group of Blurays I have lying around, so next up is Hard Boiled Sweets, a British gangster thriller that I don't remember much about even though I watch a few months back. Something about bloke getting out of prison and getting caught up in a plot to get a lot of money from a much hated gangster with the help of another gangster's trophy young wife. Ty Glaser spends most of the movie with not a lot on, although no nudity and cute Laura Greenwood from series 1 of Strike Back looks good as well, so plenty of eye candy, but the film is hardly memorable.

Also on the Bluray is the short film on which Hard Boiled Lollies was based on called A Girl And A Gun, this time with Anna Walton in the Ty Glaser role and she shows a little nudity. I really should cap more short films as I have a number of them laying around waiting for me to cap them, mostly Australian, but there's a few good ones from overseas too. One with Andrea Riseborough from the director of Nowhere Boy is well worth a look.

Update for 16 January...

Being cleaning out the old Bluray draw and found a few films from recent memory that I should cap, so here goes.

Shame is a New York set drama about a moderately successful man Brandon (Michael Fassbender) who just happens to be addicted to sex. He hires prostitutes, has sex with random strangers and masturbates a lot to what seems to be quite full on porn (not to mention his rather large porn collection, both physical and digital). When his sister, Sissy (Carey Mulligan), a troubled girl decides to stay with him, that when the trouble starts (even more than it is). Sissy is the clingy type and this isn't helped when she sleeps with Brandon's married boss (James Badge Dale). Also, Brandon's work computer has been taken away and well, let's just say the bomb disposal unit will probably be needed with the amount of porn material that is likely to be on there. Meanwhile Brandon, who has never had a relationship with anyone for more than 4 months starts going out with co-worker Marianne (Nicole Beharie), but when they attempt to have sex, Brandon can't get an erection because the sex isn't meaningless enough. After been caught out by Sissy, Brandon decides to give up the porn and meaningless sex addiction, but this isn't going to be easy and Sissy has that special way of driving him up the wall that is going to send him over the edge. Wow, this is one depressing film. Between Brandon and Sissy, it's hard to decide who's worse. The last 20 minutes are a blur, Shame is that full on and depressing. This is a tough watch but a very good film with a standout performance from Fassbender, but don't watch if you don't want to end up crying in the foetal position. Jesus!!!

Australian Classics for 9 January...

While I'm in the zone for some early 70s Australian film, how 'bout another quickie.

Wake in Fright is a UK/Australian co-production that follows English teacher John Grant (Gary Bond), who has finished the term in the middle of nowhere and is now heading to Sydney to meet up with his girl. When Grant gets to the 'Yabba, a mining town full of men, he stays the night before getting a plane to Sydney the next day. Big mistake. He stops in for a drink at a pub and meets up with Jock (Chips Rafferty in his last film), the local cop and he shows Grant the local traps including the game of 2-up. Grant is reluctant to join in on the town's frivolity, in fact deriding it to local doctor (Donald Pleasence, pure gold). The Doc's response is to just accept it and enjoy it. So, Grant joins in the game of 2-up and wins big, but like all greedy gamblers, he goes for one more big win, selling his plane ticket to put more money in, and of course, he loses it all and is stuck in the 'Yabba. With no money and no access to work, all there is to do is go to the pub and drink and meet up with other men and drink your worries away, cos without money, Grant ain't getting to Sydney and he's stuck in the 'Yabba. It's going to be a long few days. Excellent and at times quite frightening look at the Australian way amplified in mining towns. Wake In Fright holds up as well as Walkabout does, including the shocking kangaroo hunt scene which has to be seen to be believed. Great stuff.

Australian Classics for 8 January...

For today's Australian Classic let's go all the way back to the early 70s.

Walkabout is a 1971 coming of age drama that begins with a father bring his teenage daughter (Jenny Agutter) and his young son to the desert where he promptly attempts to kill them, fails and then kills himself. Leaving the girl and boy to fend for themselves in the desert, they struggle until they meet an aboriginal boy (David Gulpilil) who is in the midst of his 'walkabout', a journey he must take to learn how to fend for himself and become a man. Together, they manage quite well, but over time, the aboriginal boy begins to take a shine to the girl, feelings that are not reciprocated by the girl. So, will the threesome survive? Not a lot to Walkabout, it is more about emerging emotions, cultures clashing and burgeoning sexuality than a survivalist film, but that's what make Walkabout a very intriguing film. An excellent film that still holds up extremely well.

Australian Classics for 3 January...

A couple of Australian Classics today, both from films released in the same year.

The Umbrella Woman is a 1987 melodrama about a loving couple who's marriage is about to go through hell in the 1930s. Marge (Rachel Ward) aka The Umbrella Woman is a local midwife and Sonny (Bryan Brown), a lumberjack, are very much in love with each other, but then Sonny brings his troubled brother Sugar (Steven Vidler) into their home. Sugar takes a shine to Marge and she sees this and cheekily suggest that they have sex, which Sonny allows. After an incident where Sugar blurts out that he's seen Marge naked, word starts to get around about the three. Then new barkeep Neville (Sam Neill), a furious womaniser, arrives and spies Marge and attempts to get with her, she rejects him and Neville tells her that's the only chance she will get with him. This sets off Marge, who completely loses herself and desperately wants to get with Neville, who's too busy getting with other woman in the town. Marge then leaves Sonny in one final desperate attempt to get Neville, but this is going to end badly. A solid if a tad frustrating melodrama that is well acted by the main cast, but Bryan Brown's character is such a wuss and I can't believe the things he lets Marge do, only to continually take her back. Mmm, I'm a bit mixed about the film to be honest.

Bullseye is a 1987 light comedy about a couple of bounders who find a missing prize bull and then accidentally stumble onto a massive cattle muster, which they then do at little accidental cattle rustling and accidentally make a shitload of money. Meanwhile, Lily (Kathryn Walker), an innocent, dainty young woman who used to live on a station with the bounders, has moved to the city thinking she'll get an inheritance, which ended up being a pittance and has to take a job working at a brothel. She sees the girls getting way more money being a prostitute, so she decides to try it. One of the bounders who was good friends with her coincidentally is her first customer and ends up rescuing her from 'the life'. The law is also about to catch up with the bounders. Oh dear, this is one of those film where you could wonder forever why it was ever made as the film is so slight and fucked if I know who the audience is for it. Not only is it a slight, utterly forgettable film, it has one of the worst endings I've seen in a film in a long while. If it wasn't for the gorgeous Kathryn Walker, who sadly only seems to have been in 3 films (the other two are Dangerous Game and Belinda), this film would be dead to me. Boooooo!!!

Australian Classics for the New Year 2013...

So, for the first update of the new year, I'm going to release something... oh whatever...

The Monkey's Mask is a 2000 sex soaked mystery that follows the disappearance of poetry student Mickey Norris (Abbie Cornish). With the police unable to find anything, her mother calls in struggling private detective Jill Fitzpatrick (Susie Porter) to find her. Jill's investigations lead to her professor Diana Maitland (Kelly McGillis), a strong very sure of herself woman and Jill falls for her instantly. Donna is married to a much younger cocksure lawyer Nick (Marton Csokas). But, that never stopped anyone before, and their affair begins. Meanwhile, Mickey's body is dumped in her parent's backyard and the search is over. But, the affair isn't, it is only heating up even when Jill finds out that Nick knows all and doesn't seem to have any problem with it. Jill gets another call from Mickey's mother, asking her to find her killer and the police have gotten nowhere and before long Jill is thrown into the rather seedy side of the poetry scene and finds that not only was Mickey very much a player in the scene with her violent sexual poetry, but there seems to be a whole lotta sex and partner swapping going on and there may not be anyone Mickey hasn't slept with. And suspicion seems to fall onto Donna and Nick, whose relationship seems abnormal to say the least. I actually capped this film back when it was first released 10 or so years ago, but I don't think I watched it, because I couldn't remember anything but the copious amounts of lesbian sex and bottomless nudity of Susie Porter. The Monkey's Mask is a particularly lurid film and that throws you in the deep end in the beginning with violent poetry from Mickey's about her 'cunt' and ends with a confession during a sex act. The mystery in the middle is hardly gripping, but the lashings of lesbian sex definitely keep some sort of interest. Susie Porter dominates the film, but most of the other roles are barely noticeable, including that of American actress Kelly McGillis, whose character keeps Jill at arms length the entire time which asks the question why on Earth would Jill fall for her when Donna has no interest in reciprocating and seems to be neck deep in the mystery Jill is trying to unravel. An interesting attempt at a different type of thriller, but inevitably it's too busy being lurid to get to the heart of the mystery. Maybe, that's the point...

 

So, that's 2012 done with. A year that has some pretty good stuff to capture and another big dent put into cataloguing the sexy stuff and nudity in Australian cinema and television. As of today's update, I have capped 327 Australian movies with a further 70 movies with nothing to cap. That doesn't include the 70 movies that I have already capped, but am doing redux series of (including today's update). So, there's plenty more to do, that's for sure. And the site finally seems to have some stability, although it's costing a bit for that to happen. This site has well and truly outgrown the small operators with over 400GB(!) of content available with upwards of 80GB-90GB added this year alone and with more HD content than ever, it's only going to become bigger and more unwieldy.

This years top 10 features a number of fave, which previous lists haven't, which is strange. But, it was a good year for my faves. Remember, it is only stuff that I captured in 2012 and was released either late 2011 or through 2012.

My favourite series of 2012 are:
1. María Valverde in Madrid, 1987 (20 minutes+ of nudity, enough said)
2. Tuppence Middleton in Cleanskin (Loved this girl since the awful Tormented, some good nudity here)
3. Kate Beahan in Burning Man (some great nudity in this film and Kate's nudity is pretty darn good)
4. Emma Lung in The Straits (Love Emma, wish the scene was lighter, but still good. More nudity coming up too!)
5. Kelly Paterniti etc. in Redd Inc. (Best surprise of the year)
6. Juno Temple in Killer Joe (Big fan of Juno's and some pretty great nudity here)
7. Anna Skellern in Lip Service (Love it when Aussie girl makes good overseas, this was a highlight)
8. Hanna Mangan Lawrence and Viva Bianca in Spartacus: Vengeance (The X girls back together. Nice!)
9. Kristen Stewart in On The Road (First time nudity from Kristen was pretty darn good)
10. Martina García and Clara Lago in La Cara Oculta (some great stuff here and Martina delivers greatly)
Special mentions: Rachael Taylor in Any Questions for Ben? (tough omission and seriously unexpected), Adelaide Clemens in Generation Um... (gotta get me Parade's End), Lake Bell in How To Make It In America, Ruth Negga in The Samaritan (love the Misfits girls), Ra Chapman in Birthday, Nammi Le in Careless Love, Marta Dusseldorp in Jack Irish: Bad Debts and a double shot from Spanish actress Blanca Suárez (La Piel Que Habito, The Pelayos).
Extra special mention for the sexy stuff from the Home and Away girls (God damn Samara Weaving and Rhiannon Fish keep getting better) and ex-Home and Away girl Charlotte Best in Puberty Blues. Oh, and Ashleigh Cummings from Puberty Blues also. Oh, can't forget the SLiDE girls Emily Robins, Adele Perovic and Gracie Gilbert, who'll be in the new series of Underbelly which looks very promising (here's hoping).

That's a pretty darn good year if I do say so. Haven't really looked into the 2013 catalogue, but here's hoping for some spectacular goodies.
