Update for 29 June...

Ploughing through the old stuff at the moment. I'm baffled as to how this movie, the 1980 B-thriller The Island starring Michael Caine (in full paycheck mode) and Jack Warden (ditto!) got a Bluray release, but, I'm not complaining. But, even more baffling than that is how the hell did Angela Punch McGregor, well known in Australia for been in a number of prestige movies in the 70s and 80s, ended up in this sleazy, surprisingly violent potboiler. I'm still scratching my head about this one. Hmmmm....

Redux Friday joins a secret organisation...

These have been sitting around for a while, so might as well do a combo. I do find it baffling that of all the films that have gotten straight-to-DVD sequel, that The Skulls actually got two sequels. And for a secret organisation, they don't seem all that secret and people keep getting murdered, arousing suspicion on the organisation. The Skulls 3 takes it a step further by allowing women to join, but only so they can set her up for murder. This is the worst secret organisation since that fictional organisation, the CIA, in the Bourne films...

And Clare Kramer in The Skulls 3 reminds me that I really should recap The Thirst at some stage.

Update for 26 June...

Been watching a few horror movies lately, so there will be some horror filled stuff over the next week or so.

The Sacred is a horror thriller about Jessie (Heather Roop), a horror writer (is there any other kind in a horror movie) who is struggling to write her second novel. When her Aunt dies and leaves her the rural cabin she lived in, Jessie decides to use it to get some alone time and some inspiration for her novel. But from the moment she arrives in town, once it is recognised where she is going, the townsfolk avoid her like she has the plague, which might be better than what's about to happen. After cleaning up the cabin, a young girl named Leah comes along and befriends Jessie and claims ownership of a creepy doll that found in the cabin. At the same time, weird things begins to happen in the cabin, including various visions and it soon becomes apparent that the cabin is haunted and it could be because of some exorcism that occurred in the cabin years ago. When her boyfriend Brian (Jordan Belfi) joins her at the cabin along with his brother and girlfriend, that when things turn deadly. Stock standard cheap frightfest that is mildly sleazy with some gratuitous nudity and a welcome but obviously tacked on girl-on-girl-on-girl action, nothing to write home about, but the sleaze helps get through this pretty forgettable movie.

Update for 25 June...

More stuff that being congealing on the hard drive and it's time to release. I'd like to tell you what Gigantic is about, but I haven't a clue. It's a completely baffling film about a bedding salesman (Paul Dano) who wants to adopt a baby from China for some utterly baffling reason. When a rich guy (John Goodman) buys a mattress, he gets his drippy daughter Happy (Zooey Deschanel) to pick it up and they form a relationship of sorts. And there's a homeless bum who bashes the salesman for some reason and, ah fuck it, I've got no idea what's going on, just enjoy the best nudity Zooey's done so far.

Update for 12 June...

Today, I have 4 quick HD releases mainly of Australian actresses with an Australian movie thrown in. Not really much to say at the moment about the movies, three of them are fairly well known movies. Drift is a Western Australian set movie about a coupla of surfie bum brothers (played by Myles Pollard and Xavier Samuel) who start a business selling surfboards and gear to the locals while the cops are on their backs because of some drug deal with vengeful bikies. Also along for the ride is a drifter (played by Sam Worthington) and his American friend (Lesley-Ann Brandt), who one of the brothers falls for. An OK movie, but not exactly memorable.

But, there are a few of my faves in this update, which is fine by me.

Australian Classics Dump for 9 June...

As the title suggests, today I dump off all the videos that are just sitting around waiting for me to release them, some have been sitting there for a few years...

Some quick synopses as there's plenty of get through:

Death Bet is a martial arts thriller about a prisoner who heads back to the a shit town run by some big shot arsehole who runs underground no-holds barred fights for fun. He also goes back to reconnect with his love Leelu (Tracy Baker). Getting a job working for the big shot arsehole, he sets in motion plans that will put him in the ring. An OK film, nothing much, but reminds me a lot of the dual Western Australian martial arts thrillers from the 80s, Strike of the Panther and Day of the Panther. I should get around to capping them some time soon.

Bad Behaviour is a offbeat black comedy thriller, very much in the vain of Tarantino, that follows various people over a few days in suburban Queensland. Two psychotic killers - one male, one female - decamp to a quiet suburb around the same time a group of cool kids plan a mega blow-out party. Meanwhile, local cop Ricky (John Jarratt) has his hands full with his friend threatening to kill his cheating wife's lover and inevitably, the psychotic killers, who just happen to literally bump into the cheating wife... Quiet little thriller with obvious influences, but surprisingly good and definitely crept up on me more than I expected. Worth a look.

The 7th Hunt is a 'Most Dangerous Game' inspired thriller where a group of friends and peers are kidnapped by a group of psychotic killers looking for some easy torture. But, things don't go as planned and it's going to end in an unexpected way. Pretty stock standard stuff, nothing special going on here.

33 Postcards is a drama about a young Chinese girl who has a penpal in Dean (Guy Pearce), who says he's a park ranger. When the girl comes to Sydney as a part of a school choir, she runs away to visit him, but finds that he's in jail. She visits him in jail and things change for the both of them, even with a threat of violence made against Dean when he witnesses a jailhouse stabbing. Not bad little drama with a surprisingly decent cast for a small scale Australian film, but at the same time, it has no lofty ambitions and has struggled to find an audience here in Australia, despite it's cast.

Girl Clock! is a comedy about a 40-something woman Christine (Veronica Neave) who decides that she wants a baby, but without a partner and of a certain age, it ain't going to be easy. So, she goes on a dating spree to find the man who will impregnate her and things get pretty desperate fast. OK comedy, not really for me, but still not bad. But, I could've lived without seeing Agro's handler Jamie Dunn's bare arse.

Serenades is a drama set in the late 19th century where a girl is born of Aboriginal mother and Afghan father. She then spends her youth living within both cultural struggling to find her way. Or something, it's been a while since I've seen it...

Redball is a Melbourne set hardnosed thriller from the director of X and Acolytes about two cops who are assigned to a serial killer case, but this case is a serious career killer and it gets worse when it looks like one of their fellow cops could be the killer. A bit of a cult classic here in Australia and bizarrely Japan, but this is one very ugly film and I just don't see it that way.

Boronia Boys and Prisoner Queen are from the same director and set in the eastern Melbourne suburbs and both are pretty out there.

Australian Classics for 5 June...

The vault has been reopened and look what it's come back with.

Holy Smoke is a 1999 drama that follows Ruth (Kate Winslet), who goes to India for a holiday and finds spiritual enlightenment with a cult and decides to stay permanently. Her mother goes to India to get her back, lying to Ruth that her father is sick, but it gets her home. This is where the family calls in the best cult deprogrammer in America, PJ Waters (Harvey Keitel) and he takes Ruth to the middle of nowhere to work his magic. But, Ruth is about to prove quite a challenge for PJ, so much so that he falls for her and then goes further, maybe even too far. Hmm... this film just didn't grab me at all and I have some big problems with it, not in the least the Ruth - PJ relationship, which doesn't feel earned at all. It just sort of happens out of nowhere and from there, the film is just lost on me. PJ's transformation is totally unbelievable until it end in him wearing a dress and professing love for Ruth's cult leader even though he knows little about him. Yeah, this is a major misfire of a film, even if Kate Winslet's Australian accent is spot on and she's actually pretty good here.

I have two versions of the videos below, one from a widescreen HD version and another from a fullscreen DVD. The fullscreen version seems to show a little more than the widescreen in some videos, so that is why I decided to do both.

Update for 3 June...

Another quickie from an Australian film, this time a recently released one.

Tin God is a very low budget drama about two brothers who couldn't be more different than one another. Ethan (Tana Smith) is a bit of a wanderer who constantly contemplates everything, including suicide. Jesse (Benjamin Doolan) is a ladies man who owns a club and couldn't be more cocky. Their already tenuous relationship is about to be tested by the arrival of the troubled Sasha (Whitney Duff), who both men take a shine to, but Ethan saw her first and calls first dibs. But, Sasha seems a little standoffish towards Ethan, so in swoops Jesse, which causes Ethan to have a fling with his ex Cassie (Joey Kingman). Ethan brushes Cassie off, still interested in getting with Sasha, but Sasha seems to want to play the two brothers against each other and with Cassie concerned about what is happening, it is going to end in tragedy, one way or another. A rough and tumble drama which offers no respite from the misery, which I don't mind, but it's near impossible to go with any of the character because their behaviour is appalling. And all bar Jesse are highly troubled. And there's a fascination with cutting one self which is highly disconcerting. One moment is very shocking indeed. Very hard film to like and very tough to recommended, but at least it's something a little different.

As this film is most set a night and filmed with a digital camera, the quality of picture isn't great, but it's better than the VHS rips I've done. It's not bad, but it ain't quality either.

Australian Classics for 2 June...

A quick Australian Classic from the 80s today.

The Return of Captain Invincible is a 1983 superhero musical (yep, that's right) about Captain Invincible (Alan Arkin), who was a major help to American forces during World War 2. But during the McCarthy trials, he is seen as a threat and a communist sympathiser and decides to get away from the accusers and retires to Australia. 30 odd years later, America is under threat from Mr. Midnight (Christopher Lee), who was stolen a powerful weapon and plans to use it on America. The eccentric president (Michael Pate) decides that the only man who can save them is Captain Invincible, but he is now a drunk hack who has lost his powers. Found in Australia by a female detective (Kate Fitzpatrick) and put under the tutelage of the police chief (Bill Hunter), he attempts to get back to full worth and stop Mr. Midnight from destroying America. Well, I don't know why it was decided to turn this movie into a musiclal, but it is and that is truly bizarre. The film is also pretty bawdy, which is also unexpected. There's this bizarre aesthetic displayed throughout the film which makes it highly watchable, but it's not a good film, very uneven, particularly the bawdy humour.
