Update for 30 April...

Another quick one, this time from Mexico. This movie has been sitting around for a while as I fucked up one of the videos and forgot about it until I needed something to put up. So, I can't remember much about the movie, although it's pretty obviously about a serial killer who brutally murders young women because he was abused by a priest and it's unleashed his inner demons. Then he meets Gabriela (Ilean Almaguer) and falls for her, but still has that overwhelming urge to kill her. It gets a bit ugly, but that's pretty much the norm for serial killer movies. And Ilean is one cute girl, glad she doesn't get cut up.

Update for 28 April...

As I said previously, I really only have small updates on both sides of the site except when it comes to reduxes, but I have been watching a few new movies that I should have ready soon. Until then, here's more small updates.

Love & Air Sex is a millennial romantic comedy where Stan (Michael Stahl-David) still loves Cathy (Ashley Bell), but they have drifted apart because Stan is trying to make it Los Angeles and Cathy is living in New York. When Stan accidentally finds out that Cathy is visiting her friend Kara (Sara Paxton) in their old stomping ground in Austin, Stan spends up big and attempts to woo her back. Meanwhile, his best friend Jeff (Zach Cregger), who has just split up with Kara, is preparing for the Air Sex Championship, where people recreate wild sex acts in the air like air guitar (yeah, don't ask...). During the weekend, both Stan and Cathy will meet other people including struggling singer Haley (Addison Timlin) who may end up keeping the two apart forever. Watchable, but nothing special movie that loses marks for introducing Air Sex to the wider world. Apart from that the movie gets by with a little charm even with rather bland leads, a typical indie movie in other words.

Update for 23 April...

A quick update from a Spanish movie, but not a Spanish update, so don't panic...

3 Bodas de Más is a romantic comedy, Spanish style where hopeless in love Ruth (Inma Cuesta) is dumped by her latest boyfriend, so she pours herself into her work as a scientist at a university working on lobsters. Then, three wedding invitations from ex-boyfriends arrive at the same time and her love life hits rock bottom. She takes her new intern, the younger Dani (Martiño Rivas) to wedding of Mikel (Paco León) where she meets plastic surgeon Jonás (Quim Gutiérrez) and gets along with him fine, but when he is called away, Ruth falls into her old habits and drunkenly sleeps with Dani and a party guest. She meets up with Jonás and they fall in love, but something is not quite right about him, which she finds out at the wedding of her old boyfriend, now a woman Álex (Laura Sánchez). Will Ruth ever find true love? A pretty standard romantic comedy with a Spanish twist so there's a bit more sex. The character of Ruth doesn't exactly break new ground as she's wacky and absent-minded and gets into predicaments easily, just like every other girl in a romantic comedy, but Inma Cuesta is fine and has a few funny moments including one really bizarre one at the end of the movie. And her character has an unhealthy obsession with the other Europe song 'Carrie', so marks off for that. Nothing groundbreaking, but good fun.

Update for 22 April...

Lots of small stuff lying around at the moment, so time to get some stuff out there.

Jump is an Irish comedy/drama ensemble movie set on New Year's Eve where Greta (Nichola Burley), the daughter of a local mob boss is about to jump off a bridge. She dreams of coming to Australia with her best friend Marie (Charlene McKenna), but is currently at her lowest ebb. Meanwhile, her mob boss father Frank (Lalor Roddy), has his own problems as someone has robbed his safe. He finds out that it's Pearse Kelly (Martin McCann), who's looking for revenge because he believes that Frank and his goons are involved with his brother Eddie's disappearance. While Frank's goons go looking for Pearse including Johnny (Richard Dormer), who's looking to get out of the business, Marie, still looking for Greta is stuck with Dara (Valene Kane) who's is nothing but trouble. As Greta is about to jump off a bridge, she meets Pearse who attempts to talk her out of jumping. Told in a sort of non-linear fashion, which is a bit of an issue trying to work out what happens when, Jump is an OK movie that is good for a laugh and is also a bit of a downer.

Update for 15 April...

Convict is a prison drama where Ray (George Basha), just back from serving in Afghanistan, takes an 18 month sentence for manslaughter after killing a man who pulled a knife on him and his fiancée Kelly (Millie Rose Heywood), but that's where his problems begin. The father of the man he killed knows the governor of the prison (David Field) and asks to make Ray's life a living hell in prison. With the help of two brutal guards, Ray is put through the wringer with both physical and mental torture and when that's not enough, the gangs in prison keep him on his toes. He befriends David (Richard Green), a lifer who gives him a job in the library and helps him get through, but with rising tensions in the Muslim gang and the death of a guard, Ray may not survive the 18 months. From the team that made The Combination, Convict is a typical prison movie, playing up the brutality, particularly from the guards who are amongst the most sadistic you're ever likely to see, so there's also nothing new here. There's even a manslaughter scenario that wouldn't look out of place in Con Air. Basha plays Ray so earnestly that it almost seems like his death wouldn't faze him and this makes his character Andy Dufresne-like, almost impossible to dislike even when the pressure eventually gets to him. Also, there must be some law where you can't have an Australian prison drama without David Field (see also Ghosts... of the Civil Dead, Everynight... Everynight and the beginning of Chopper), so that is well and truly fulfilled. An OK movie if you like your brutal prison dramas.

I was planning on doing more redux series for the weekend, but I've been distracted, so there's a number of half finished ones that should be coming soon. Anyway, today's update is from 2003's The Sleeping Dictionary, a movie I've bafflingly capped for the third time. I think it maybe time to move on now I have capped a HD version. This is not a movie I particularly like, but I keep coming across. But, you've gotta love a movie where Jessica Alba plays the most unlikely tribeswoman ever, that her father is played by Bob Hoskins (Bob Hoskins!!!) and Noah Taylor plays one of the most snivelling English villains you're ever likely to see.

Update for 10 April...

A rare Chinese movie on the site.

Dangerous Liaisons is a re-imagining of the age-old drama in pre-WWII China. Rich playboy Xie Yifan (Dong-gun Jang) still lusts after ex-girlfriend, socialite Mo (Cecilia Cheung), but she resists. But, she gives him a kernel of hope by agreeing to a liaison if he seduces young Beibei (Candy Wang) because she wants to hurts Beibei's suitor, who would like her virginal. Yifan isn't at all interested in that, but he becomes intrigued by his cousin Du Fenyu (Ziyi Zhang), a rare woman who is able to resist Yifan's advances. Mo deception of Beibei goes further when she spies her tutor looking longingly at Beibei and sets up a meeting which would shock Beibei's family, causing her to move in with Yifan, who then carries out his part of the plan. But by now, he has become infatuated with Fenyu and she is starting to come around to his charms. And when Yifan claims his prize, he feels nothing for Mo. A pretty standard adaptation of the classic tale. While the performances are pretty good, particularly from Cheung and Jang, this doesn't exactly stand out from the field.

Update for 9 April...

Oldboy is a revenge thriller following Joe Doucett (Josh Brolin), a man having the worst day of his life until he wakes up in a hotel room and finds himself locked in like a jail cell. As Joe gets his head around what is happening, days go by, then weeks, months and then years until 20 years later when he awakes on the outside world with a smart phone and nothing but vengeance on his mind. Using the help of his friend, bar owner Chucky (Michael Imperioli) and a woman who cares for him after a beating, Marie Sebastian (Elizabeth Olsen), he goes about finding out who did this to him. After tussles with the owner of the prison (Samuel L. Jackson), Joe finds the man who has set this up, Adrian Pryce (Sharlto Copley), is someone he has never met, but is making sure that he never forgets what Joe did to him. A remake of a 2003 Korean movie, a movie I very much love and have watched a number of times over the years, Oldboy 2013 feels like an abridged version of the original. The problem here is that as the remake feels like an abridged version, it loses all its soul and mood in the rush to getting to the point of the vengeance, which is one of the major reasons why the original is so good. Joe Doucett is such a one track mind prick that it's hard to feel any sympathy for him and his plight. He feels like a man who deserves the shit that is happening to him much more so than almost likable Oh Dae-Su. And the ending is significantly nastier in the remake. But, Oldboy 2013 is not a bad movie by any stretch, there are moments are very good including the recreation of that all-in brawl at the prison. And it rolls along at a cracking pace. They'll are many more worse remakes than Oldboy, but I still prefer the original. Apparently there's a longer cut of the movie that I doubt will ever see the light of day, but I wouldn't mind seeing. I think this adds to the whole abridged feeling of the movie.

Update for 7 April...

Submerge is a drama about promising swim star Jordan (Lily Hall) who is balancing a hectic schedule of swim training and a history degree and it's starting to take it's toll. Jordan also becomes closer with her tutor Angie (Christina Hallett) who is married to the head of history Cameron (Andrew Curry). After initial rejection, Angie falls for Jordan and they have an one night stand which is all they have as Angie doesn't want Cameron to find out. Meanwhile, after qualifying for the Australian swim team, Jordan becomes more frustrated with how her life is going. She sees her friends including roommate Lucas (Kevin Dee), having fun and she wants that, but swim training is getting in the way. Then there's her mother, who desperately wants Jordan to succeed at swimming and when Jordan begins missing sessions, her mother suggests quitting university, but they compromise and she drops a class. After being introduced to a BDSM club by a girl she likes, Delilah (Georgia Bolton), it starts a path that will affect Jordan's life greatly. Submerge is a quite watchable low budget drama that takes the path less travelled on the blurred lines of sexuality although the result ends up being the same. While there are the usual issues with low budget movies, Submerge gets by with a decent lead performance by Lily Hall, who also seems to be a pretty good swimmer which is more than exploited to good effect in the movie. Not a bad attempt at exploring twenty-something's sexuality, but by no means great either and the ending is a little too convenient.

I capped this movie from a HD download off iTunes, so the quality, while still very good, is a little down. And then there's the water scenes which are always the first to suffer off these web downloads. There's also scenes in saturated light or near darkness just for added frustration. Also, I found it strange that the university scenes where shot at my old university, Swinburne, which I don't think has ever happened in a movie before. It might have as there is/was a school of TV and radio there, but I don't recall coming across it before.

Update for 6 April...

A couple of movies from Britain today.

uwantme2killhim? is a thriller about Mark (Jamie Blackley) who has it all and looks like he's going places. But, things are about to change when he starts getting involved with a woman online. He develops an online sexual chat relationship with Rachel (Jaime Winstone), but she has an abusive boyfriend who is apparently in witness protection because he ratted out some gang mates. The last thing Rachel says to Mark is to look after her younger brother John (Toby Regbo), who is getting picked on at school. The next day, Rachel turns up dead by apparent suicide, but Mark is convinced her boyfriend killed her. Over time, he becomes friends with John as he becomes more incensed that the abusive boyfriend is getting away with it. Then, Mark is contacted by a MI5 operative that gives tidbits of information about the boyfriend, which Mark uses to bring the boyfriend out of hiding. But, nothing is what it seems and things change focus when the MI5 operative asks him to do something that will change his life forever. There's just one thing and it's a big thing... Based on a true story, which if really true, is absolutely bizarre, this surprisingly engrossing thriller has a twist that is truly something. This is an unsettling tale of someone who believes everything on face value and never questions any information he is given from faceless entities. The movie shows how easy it is to manipulate people online and is disturbing in how effective this deception is with a very simple starting point. Definitely not one for the paranoid...

Twenty8k is a thriller where Deeva Jani (Parminder Nagra) is brought back from Paris to help represent for her brother Vipon (Sebastian Nanena) who is accused of the murder of a fellow twenty8k gang member. It seems to be a simple gangland shooting, but it seems to have stemmed from an earlier shooting death of a pregnant woman and about a plan to reinvigorate the local area with chief detective DCI Edward Stone (Stephen Dillane) very much neck deep in it. Vipon maintains his innocence even though he is seen running from the scene with the murder weapon. Deeva is convinced of his innocence and begins a massive search to find out the truth and what she finds will have far-reaching consequences for the country itself. Talk about a massively contrived thriller. If uwantme2killhim? is a stretch of a story, twenty8k is an even bigger stretch. Then there's Parminder Nagra's character, who should just be called Wonder Woman because she gets herself into so many perilous situations driving in her completely conspicuous Audi and barely gets a scratch. And these situations become more elaborate too including having an affair with the killer and breaking into so many different places. It's hard to take this movie seriously and with the help of major plotholes and massive contrivances, you just have to sit back an take in the ride, because otherwise, you'll be shaking your head a helluva lot.

Redux Friday for 4 April...

It's that time of the week where I redo some old series in better quality and in some cases, actually put up videos from that movie. This week's focus is on a couple of Sofia Coppola directed movies from a few years back. I find it astonishing that I saw Lost in Translation in cinemas 10 years ago. It's already been 10 years! I haven't watched her last couple of movies, probably because I disliked Marie Antoinette (and a recent rewatch brought those feelings back), but Sofia films women better than most male directors do, so maybe I should check out her newer stuff.

The Lost in Translation videos aren't the best, possibly because the sources are old and probably from an early Bluray when they were still getting it right. They're fine, but the dark scenes are a bit murky. Might try to find a newer version although I'm not sure there is one.

Update for 1 April...

The Sunlight Jr. update was a surprise big hit (and no wonder, it's Naomi Watts' best nudity since 21 Grams), so I delayed this update a day. Back onto the short films, this one having a surprising amount of sex in it for a 15 minute movie. Tender is about Cate (Katie Jean Harding), who has an one night stand with artist Max (Angus Sampson), and they get along so well it develops into a highly sexual relationship where limits are tested. But, Cate wants more, but what is more? Interesting little short that I don't fully understand, which I think is the point if you're a man. I dunno...
