Update for 30 June...

A quickie.

Almost Married is a comedy about Kyle (Philip McGinley) who has contracted chlamydia during his stag night with his best mate Jarvis (Mark Stobbart). This means he can't have sex with his fiancée Lydia (Emily Atack) for three months. Which is going to be hard because the wedding's coming up and she's a little horny. Kyle tries every trick in the book to not have sex with Lydia while he and Jarvis concoct a way of telling or not telling Lydia what he's got. It all gets a bit much for Kyle who contemplates suicide before attempting to find the prostitute he got it from that she may have it. But, the prostitute may have a surprise for him. Oh dear, a comedy about a sexually transmitted disease/infection is a dicey prospect even at the best of times (and there's no best of times...) and Almost Married is mostly dire. There are occasional funny moments, mostly the well-deserved ending, but when most of the movie is Kyle and Jarvis thinking up ways to avoid telling the missus that Kyle got something extra from a prostitute on his stag night, I really couldn't give a fuck about him or his conundrum. Fuck him and this movie...

It's bikini time! Well, not by intention, but the below two updates have a lot of bikini action, so much so that I thought about adding some more, but I don't have anything I can knock up in a few hours to add, sadly.

Also, can't believe that I've never taken seriously that surfer girl Ashley Cheadle flashes her breasts in Fool's Gold. Just never occured to me to make any sort of connection until recently. Actually, it's never clicked that the movie was made in Australia at all. All of the lead roles are taken by Hollywood actors or fairly well-known actors, but looking at the movie again, all the minor roles are full of Australian actors putting on American or British accents. Can't believe that never clicked the first time around, maybe I just wasn't interested in the movie, which is definitely a possibility. Ah well, I've gone over it now with a fine tooth comb, hopefully never have to think about it ever again.

Update for 25 June...

A quick update from a new Australian movie.

Nerve is a drama about Jacob (Christian Clark), who after having a breakdown after the death of his wife, has checked himself out of a mental hospital and taken a room at prostitute Grace's (Georgina Haig) house. With the help of psychiatrist Helen (Andrea Demetriades), Jacob tries to get his head around why his wife was having an affair just before she died as he thinks that this will give him closure. The longer he thinks about it, the more he wants to hurt her lover, who he finds with the help of Grace, a woman who while troubled, feels the need to help those around her. They find out that the mystery man is Vincent (Craig Hall), a despicable womaniser, but something is off and maybe Jacob has it all wrong. An interesting look at someone coping with loss, even if the movie ends with an unnecessary twist ending. Both leads are alright, although the role of Grace borders on hooker with a heart of gold territory and there's an underdeveloped subplot involving the dead woman's parents that could have been excised.

Update for 24 June...

As I was capping the New Zealand TV show Step Dave, I remembered that the female lead, Sia Trokenheim, was in some movie that was billed as an erotic thriller called Luella Miller that I had a quick look at it about 5 or so years ago, didn't see much to get excited about, then totally forgot about it. 'Til now. Also found another New Zealand movie, this time starring new Home and Away recruit Jessica Grace Smith, which I've also capped for today's update.

Luella Miller is a 2005 drama about Lydia (Sara Wiseman), a shy woman living in the shadow of her mother, who was a notorious, but now dead local prostitute. While she works at a local factory, he main love is as a dress maker. One day, Lydia is startled by a frightened, child-like woman Luella Miller (Sia Trokenheim), who has hidden inside her house. She decides to help out Luella, but it isn't long before friction begins between the two women as Luella forces herself onto the town, impressing all the men and pissing off all the women. Then, Luella sets her sights on troubled Christian (Phil Brown), who is Lydia's best friend and who she has been harbouring a major crush on, but is too scared to take that step. Luella recognises this and plays a dangerous game where she attempts to get Lydia and Christian together just as Christian is leaving town. This is not going to end well... An OK, if slightly underdone movie that begins rather oddly with the bizarre behaviour and then completely out there suicide of Luella's father, which I assume was supposed to be a bigger part of the plot, but is never mentioned again after it happens in the first ten minutes. And while it promises to be some sort of erotic thriller, it really isn't even close, it's actually quite a depressing movie and not really erotic unless you count a quite out-of-nowhere facial scene as sexy.

Diagnosis: Death is a 2009 comedy horror movie where sleazy teacher Andre (Raybon Kan) and school girl Juliet (Jessica Grace Smith) contracted a rare form of cancer from a ghostly presence and are put into a drug trial at the same hospital in their dying days. Run by a vicious nurse (Suze Tye) and a doctor (Bret McKenzie), Andre and Juliet become friends as boredom sets in as they can't go outside the hospital. Then the visions start of a young boy drowning possibly by a woman who turns out to be a famous author who was a resident at the hospital. Andre and Juliet decide to investigate including stealing the keys and leaving the hospital. Is it the experimental drugs they are taking or is it the ghostly presence that is causing this. Or is something more sinister at hand. Another OK movie that benefits from good chemistry between the leads more than the attempts at comedy or horror, neither of which reaching any great heights. There's also the full Flight of the Conchords cast in cameos (well, Bret McKenzie is slightly more than a cameo) as well as Loren Horsley from Eagle vs. Shark, none of which are all that funny. A shame really because the film never really decides what it wants to be, a straight horror movie or a comic one.

Both movies are from average sources, so the quality of the videos isn't the greats, better than the VHS videos but not by a whole lot. The Luella Miller videos were a whole lot darker before I tampered with them. The Diagnosis: Death videos were and still have a few interlacing issues. I doubt these movies will ever be re-released, so this is probably the best you'll get.

One more thing, I saw the Australian movie Galore, starring Ashleigh Cummings and Lily Sullivan in cinemas yesterday and sadly no nudity from either. Both girls have a few underwear/bikini scenes and Ashleigh has a prominent strategic 'nude' scene that you don't see below her chest in the opening scene. The film itself drags on and on and on for what seems like forever, but ends up being an hour and 45 minutes. It doesn't seem to want to end. Also, there are vast similarities to the TV show Puberty Blues (which also stars Ashleigh Cummings), hell the friendship between the two female leads is mighty similar. I will say though that Ashleigh Cummings is outstanding here and totally stops the movie from being completely boring, if there's any justice, she'll go far. The male roles though are total dead weight. Also frightening to think that Maya Stange is old enough to play the mother of a teenage girl then I remembered she played a teenager in Love in Limbo 20-odd years ago. Shit, does time fly.

Update for 19 June...

The Knot is a comedy about that follows the wedding day of Alexandra (Talulah Riley) and Jeremy (Matthew McNulty). Following the two parties are two documentarians and both are recovering from buck's/hen's nights the night before. Along the way, each party will go through an ever growing number of comic disasters that may or may not end up in them getting married. Not really a lot to elaborate here as the plot is rather thin as it's basically disaster after disaster until the wedding, none of which are all that amusing or original. Although I must say that the movie is far more raucous than expected with some gratuitous nudity from strippers of both sexes and a fair amount of attempted toilet humour for a wedding day movie. Meh...

Update for 18 June...

All Cheerleaders Die is a comedy horror movie where Mäddy (Caitlin Stasey) decides to get revenge on new head cheerleader Tracy (Brooke Butler) and her new boyfriend, football captain Terry (Tom Williamson), who got together as the old head cheerleader and Terry's ex and who was Mäddy's friend was being buried after die in a cheerleading accident. First, Mäddy gets a spot on the cheerleader team, then she befriends Tracy and begins an affair with her. Terry spots this and after Tracy dumps him for his own indiscretions, a fight ensues then a car chase which results in Tracy, Mäddy and sisters Martha (Reanin Johannink) and Hannah (Amanda Grace Cooper) driving off the road and all die before Mäddy's clingy ex Leena (Sianoa Smit-McPhee) can save them. But, Leena is a witch and has stones that she has been playing with that come to life and grant her one wish, which she uses to bring the girls back to life. There's just one problem (well two, if you count the sisters changing bodies). They have all become blood sucking zombie succubi. Terry sees this and wants to stop them... well, actually kill them all. An over-the-top, fun, but wildly erratic movie that just knows everything at the wall and sees what sticks. There's some good laughs, some good gore, but not all of it works and the ending seems unfinished in an attempt to set up a follow-up. It's worth a look, but it may be a bit too much of everything.

Update for 16 June...

Crazy Kind of Love is a drama about a family that is coping with the break up of the parent's marriage. When Augusta (Virginia Madsen) is dumped for another woman by her husband (Anthony LaPaglia), she goes into a deep depression and her youngest son Henry (Graham Rogers) is left to pick up the pieces. He calls his older brother, the socially awkward Matthew (Zach Gilford), to tell him the news, so he comes home from college. Then at a party where he gets very drunk, Henry meets Bette (Amanda Crew), who's new in town and falls for her. They get together and it isn't long before Bette begins having an impact on the entire family. She helps Augusta get through her depression the same way her mother did, by watching soap operas. And she helps Matthew come out of his shell, but goes too far by sleeping with him leading to Henry and Bette breaking up. But, life isn't the same without Bette for Henry. Oh and she also has a surprise for him. Amiable little drama that is perked up greatly by Amanda Crew, who's like a bouncing ball of joy throughout. The movie threatens to go deep into the issues surrounding a marriage break-up on the family, but never really does, which isn't such a bad thing here. Worth a look if you're not expecting greatness, just a good fun movie.

Haven't done a redux series for a few weeks, mainly because I've actually had a lot of new movies to cap. Anyway, it's that time of the week again. I particularly like the see-through top scene from Kate Mara in Shooter. Looks great in HD.

Update for 12 June...

Endless Love is a romantic drama where hopeless romantic David (Alex Pettyfer) sees studious quiet mouse Jade (Gabriella Wilde) on there high school graduation day and wished that he'd talked to her. At the country club where David works as a valet, he spies Jade with her family and after flirtative glances, they steal a car and loves blossoms from there. After a party at her house, Jade tells David that in two weeks she is taking up a scholarship to become a doctor as her father (Bruce Greenwood) wanted. So, against the wishes of her father, the two spend every day of the next few weeks together and have fallen deep in love with each other. This causes Jade to postpone taking up the scholarship, much to her father's chagrin. At the lake house, Jade, who wasn't going to the lake house if she took up the scholarship, invites David, further infuriating her father, but this time he begrudgingly welcome him with the help of David spying the father kissing a work colleague he'd invited. After David, Jade, her brother (Rhys Wakefield), his fiancée and some friends get found out trespassing at a zoo, David takes the rap and Jade's father bails him out, riling David up so much that he punches Jade's father. This causes a series of events that will split up Jade and David, but their love bond can never be broken. Oh wow! This has to be one of the most phony movies I have ever seen. Based on the same novel as the 1981 movie (which I haven't seen, but sounds just as corny), everything about Endless Love is so fake that it just gets worse the longer it goes. The plot may be utterly predictable, but that's not always a problem. It's when the movie tells us that this couple's love is eternal even though they've never spoken to each other. It's that appalling monologue David gives about how he will do everything for Jade, 2 days after meeting her. Hell, if I was the father, David would be buried in the desert after that speech, total stalker behaviour. Then there's that appalling scene where David runs after Jade who sees David sitting next to a love rival full well knowing that's she's going to crash the car. The funny part is, the actors all play their roles quite servicably, but they are lumped with such garbage, I don't think anyone would've saved it. I know this movie isn't made for me, but surely there are movies that better suit the modern woman without firing such out-of-date thinking at them.

Update for 10 June...

Don't really watch a lot of Dutch movies, let alone cap them, but I caught The Last Days of Emma Blank on early morning TV a few weeks back and liked it, then I found out the director had a new movie out. Both are here today.

De Laatste Dagen van Emma Blank (The Last Days of Emma Blank) is an absurd comedy where a family is waiting for the death of the matriarch Emma Blank (Marlies Heuer). But, she's decided to use her family as forced help if they want their inheritance. They do so begrudgingly including forcing her ex-husband Haneveld (Gene Bervoets) to sleep in her bed. Things get more frustrating for Emma's daughter Gonnie (Eva van de Wijdeven), sick of her husband and being a slave, takes a lover, much to the chagrin of Theo (Alex van Warmerdam, the writer/director) who is almost like a human dog (and is treated as such) and desperately wants to rut Gonnie. Emma pushes Gonnie too far and announces to the family that she lost all her money and assets except for the house and this turns everyone against Emma and her last days will end not as she expects them to. Fairly funny satire about what people will do for a jackpot of money and what happens when this guarantee is taken from them. It is wildly absurd, sometimes even ridiculous but there's plenty of moments that make this movie an oddball gem.

Borgman is a Grimm fairy-tale like thriller where vagabond Borgman (Jan Bijvoet) and his two disciples are flushed out of the living in the catacombs and are forced to live elsewhere. Borgman attempts to have a bath at the home of Marina (Hadewych Minis) and Richard (Jeroen Perceval), but Richard is having none of that and bashes Borgman to a bloody pulp in front of Marina. This horrifies her and she decides to let him stay briefly in the guest house without telling Richard. But, Borgman slowly infiltrates the household, befriending the three children and Marina. He asks Marina whether he can do one thing and that's kill the gardener, which he does along with the gardener's wife with the help of his wife and daughter. He then sets about becoming the gardener for the family and when he is, begins digging a huge hole in the backyard. Meanwhile, the children are becoming very sick and something weird is happening the both Richard, who has an X marked on his back and the nanny, Stine (Sara Hjort Ditlevsen). Not to mention the extremely violent dreams Marina is having while a completely naked Borgman overlooks her. What is Borgman and his friends and family up to? What the FUCK are they up to...? A truly bizarre and somewhat disturbing but absurdly funny movie that I don't quite have a full handle of. At times it's quite fascinating watching Borgman weave his magic, but there are times where the movie is quite disturbing like what is happening to the kids and the whole gardener plot which ends in one of the most troublingly funny ways I've seen in a long while. I'm assuming the movie is something about freeing people of their programmed way of thinking, but there a quite a bit I'm still struggling to understand. But, I became more and more fascinated the longer the movie went. I'll have to watch it again now...

Just a quick warning that the Emma Blank videos come with a Russian voices overdubbed during the dialogue. It was the best version I can get and there's not a lot of it in the videos below, but it's fine. The Borgman videos are the normal audio.

Australian VHS Classics for 8 June...

I haven't dusted off the old VHS player in a while, so let's see what's left in there today.

Beyond Innocence (aka Devil in the Flesh) is a 1989 (but filmed in 1985) drama set during World War 2 where Paul (Keith Smith) sees the daughter of an old family friend, Marthe Foscari (French/English actress Katia Caballero) and instantly falls for her. But, there's two problems. He's a school boy and she's a married Italian woman awaiting the release of her husband Ermanno from a prison camp. But each find it hard to resist and an affair develops between the two of them. If they were to be found out, it would lead to untold scandal and when Marthe becomes pregnant, they attempt to live life together, bugger the scandal. But, with Ermanno close to coming home and the passion dwindling, this is not going to be easy. Fairly run-of-the-mill young someone has an affair with older someone drama, nothing really outstanding about it and for a movie set in the 40s, there seems to be a casualness that even when found out, it's hardly the end of the world, which I'm sure would not have happened in reality. Hell, even Ermanno seems pretty cool with it. He even gets a son he can later disown if he wants out. Also, if you're interested, there's a Dutch movie from 1986 called Devil in the Flesh based on the same novel, but features a real blow job scene performed by Maruschka Detmers. Nothing like that in the Australian version, but plenty of nudity nonetheless. There also seems to be a French movie a year later which adapted the same novel. Can't see the attraction myself...

Also, there's a scene towards the end where Paul walks onto the street during a celebration for the war being over and a girl stops him and says a few words to him. She is not credited in the movie, neither is the character, which is bizarre considering she seems to have been cast in the role, but that girl looks and sounds remarkably like Naomi Watts. Might not be her, but she does a very good impression if it's not her.

As always with a movie capped from VHS, the quality is down, but this one isn't too bad, just the occasional issue that doesn't really take away from viewing. I doubt we will ever see a DVD/Bluray release of this movie, it's pretty obscure and has no stars in it (apparently it's the lead actor's only role, no wonder, he's not very good) and no real value outside of that apart from maybe a little flesh. It would be nice to get a version where the framing was a better, a couple of scenes below would've benefited from better pan and scanning, but I'm not holding out for it.

Update for 5 June...

A couple of quick updates today.

Guns, Girls and Gambling is a comic thriller where John Smith (Christian Slater) is a down on his luck gambler who decides to join an Elvis impersonating contest. That's when the trouble starts. He wakes up after a poker game with the other competitors and is accused of stealing a valuable Native American mask that all the powerbrokers in the city, and pretty much anyone who hears about it, wants. There the owners of the mask, the Native Americans who own the casino, there's the Rancher (Powers Boothe) who employs the Cowboy (Jeff Fahey) to help him get it. There's a blonde assassin (Helena Mattsson) and the two corrupt cops (Dane Cook and Sam Trammell) who stumble into the plot and then there's all the other Elvis impersonators who are getting picked off one by one. And then there's the next door neighbour (Megan Park) who keeps John Smith company and her ex-boyfriend who seems to be following her. But, it seems they have all been trumped by the winner of the Elvis impersonator contest (Gary Oldman). If only John Smith can survive long enough to figure it out. Silly little thriller that is easily summed up by its title. Wildly over-the-top and more twists than necessary. Not much too it. Really only capped it because I knew Heather Roop from The Sacred got naked. Any excuse...

Art Machine is a drama about artist wunderkind Declan (Joseph Cross) who is about to have his latest art show for his 18th birthday, but is struggling for motivation. He is looked after by his over-protective mother Prudence (Joey Lauren Adams), even moreso after an incident that landed him in trouble. One night while doing some night skateboarding, he hears an explosion on a rooftop and he investigates and finds Cassandra Moon (Jessica Szohr) blasting some words into a building. After helping her out, she takes him to where she hangs out with a group of outcast artists. They are impressed by Declan's ability and being a part of this group helps with bringing out his inspiration. He also falls in love with Cassandra. Declan becomes more obsessed with developing a stupendous art show, but after an accident while creating an artwork for a show that injures Cassandra, she becomes concerned with his behaviour. And he has one big surprise for his art show. Interesting look at a genius artist at work and how close one skirts with mental illness. While the movie has it's issues, it is still a pretty good watch if you are interested in the subject and Joseph Cross gives a spirited performance as the genius.

Update for 3 June...

+1 is a time travel thriller where David (Rhys Wakefield) comes back home from college to visit his long-time girlfriend Jill (Ashley Hinshaw) and watches her lose a fencing match. He then mistakes her opponent for her and to top it off, he inexplicably kisses her, just as Jill walks in. Relationship over. But, David wants to make amends at the party of the year at Angad's (Rohan Kymal) house, which he attends with best friend Teddy (Logan Miller) and joined by Alison (Suzanne Dengel and Colleen Dengel). David strikes out with Jill again and she shows an interest in Steve. Teddy starts chatting to Melanie (Natalie Hall) and she promises him a surprise. There's electricity in the air and when it strikes a power box, a strange phenomenon occurs. It seems to cause the world from 20 minutes ago to enter to current world. At first only David, Teddy, Alison and Melanie notice it and it's freaking them out. With the party moving to another part of the property, it's only a matter of time before the past catches up with the present. And then what? A truly bizarre idea that ends up being one helluva lot of fun, possibly the most fun movie I've seen in a while. There are numerous surreal moments in the movie, not in the least the Teddy/Melanie sex scene and a scene in the pool house that is seriously out there. And who the hell lucked out doing continuity in this movie, surely they're in the nuthouse right now. Absolutely worth a look if like an entertaining headscratcher.

That Natalie Hall scene below, well 11 scenes cut together according to my timecodes, is an absolute scorcher, possibly the best nude scene of the year so far, underrated too because of the more high profile scenes. I've brightened it slightly because the scene is shot in both dim light and candle light, plus a dark source and it's come out great. The scene with the two strippers it a little problematic, the original source is a HD rip that I bought off iTunes, so the quality perfectly watchable, it's just not high quality HD. So, that scene which is full of intense light and high movement was already not perfect on the source. It's fine, it's great, but it's not perfect. Oh, just watch it...

Update for 2 June...

sxtape is a horror thriller where struggling artist Jill (Caitlyn Folley) is followed around by her camera toting boyfriend Adam. After a bit of fun, they decide to trespass in an abandoned house which turns out to be an old mental hospital, possibly a not very legal one. They begin to hear strange noises and a ghostly apparition appears, so they leave, but their friends Bobby (Chris Coy) and Elly (Diana García), there to pick them up when their car is towed, want to have a look. So, they all go back inside and pick on Adam, who goes off on his own. Later he finds Jill, a crying mess with a video tape and what is on it will shock Adam to his core, but that's not the worst of it... From Bernard Rose, whose films are well known to this site (Snuff-Movie, Two Jacks), this found footage movie is an OK addition to the people stupidly going to abandoned insane asylums genre, nothing new, but Rose can't help himself and adds some quite shocking stuff including a final scene which seems to be only there for shock value. Ah well, I shouldn't have expected anything else from the man.
