Update for 31 January...

Well, it's been a while since I watched Summer in February, so I can't quite remember it, something about Emily Browning's character coming to town and fitting into some art community or something, I dunno. And what's so special about summer in February, it's always summer in February here...

Update for 29 January...

The Philosophers is a drama set in a philosophy class in an international school in Jakarta. In the final class where each student's final marks are to be determined, teacher Mr. Zimit (James D'Arcy) sets a challenge where only 10 of the 20 students in the class would be allowed to live in an underground shelter with him after a nuclear apocalypse. Each student is given a job and a trait that may or may not be useful in the shelter. Zimit makes it easier by 'executing' 10 students, people he sees no use for, but this goes wrong and causes the rest to panic and leave Zimit is left out of the shelter, the only person with the exit code. As the students slowly die off, it becomes clear that saving the world is more complicated than it seems, but star student Petra (Sophie Lowe) has her own plans, which may not be to Zimit's liking. Always going to be tough to illustrate philosophical conundrums in a movie and this movie has it's problems, mainly that it feels more like a social experiment than a movie. While some of the answers are interesting, particularly Petra's 'outside the box' solution, it still feels more like homework than entertainment. The cast is fairly diverse (including 5 Australian actors), although for a school in Jakarta there is a lack of Asian students which seems a bit bizarre. The Philosophers isn't for those looking for a 'fun', entertaining time, but it isn't without it's charm.

Update for 28 January...

Being Venice is a drama about a confessional poet Venice (Alice McConnell) (yeah, it doesn't get any better from here, so you can move on) whose life is about to be turned upside down when her distant father (Garry McDonald) arrives in town to run a writing course, oh and visit his daughter. Her boyfriend dumps her, she gets caught on a train without a ticket and then attempts to have sex with Lenny (Simon Stone) while sharing the bed with her best friend (Katie Wall) who just happens to be Lenny's on-off lover and pregnant with his child. Venice and Lenny start seeing each other and when Venice hits her head on a reef, it manages to get her father closer to her. All the while, Venice may actually start writing. While Being Venice isn't the most enticing of movies to watch, it's not awful either, just mostly uninteresting. It's hard to care for Venice and her predicaments and let's face it, a poet isn't the most exciting of characters to portray. Can't recommend the movie, but I'm sure I'll see worse and more pointless this year. But, not by much...

Update for 26 January...

Girls Against Boys is a revenge thriller set in New York with Shae (Danielle Panabaker) trying to get over being dumped by her married lover. One night at work as a bartender, she meets Lu (Nicole LaLiberte) and they go out after work and meet a group of men who they then go back to their place for further partying. Shae decides to leave and is taken home by Simon (Michael Stahl-David), but when Shae rejects his advances, he rapes her. Shae doesn't know where to turn and calls Lu and after being fobbed off by the police. And that's when the killings start. Lu tempts the brusque desk sergeant away and promptly murders him, then Lu convinces Shae to confront Simon and kills Simon's friends after they stop being useful. Then Simon is tortured and killed, but it doesn't stop there. The married lover is next and with all the men who have wronged her gone, Shae is free to move on, but Lu isn't quite finished yet. Girls Against Boys is such a cold movie that it's hard to feel sympathy for Shae even though she was raped. She feels nothing when a string of men are murdered including some who don't deserve it. And the final act is just ugly. I struggled to feel anything for this movie other than contempt, it's hard to feel much else.

Update for 24 January...

A couple of quick updates from British movies.

Spike Island is a coming of age film about a group of rock star wannabes in Manchester that are obsessed with seeing The Stone Roses in their defining gig on Spike Island in 1990. Seems like an obscure piece of history to put on film, I mean, I like The Stone Roses, that's why I was interested in the movie, but they weren't exactly the biggest band, even though this was probably the peak of their fame in 1990. The film's OK, but is a bit of a tough sell.

Vendetta is a revenge thriller about an ex-soldier with a murky present (Danny Dyer) whose parents are tortured and murdered by a gang getting revenge on the father after he kills one of the gang during a robbery gone wrong. Brutal going, but this added stuff about his military work with the SAS and their protection is a bit unnecessary and the ending is just ugly. Would've been better as a straight revenge thriller.

Update for 23 January...

Let's go to the dark side once again.

Kelly + Victor is a drama about Kelly (Antonia Campbell-Hughes) who meets Victor (Julian Morris) at a nightclub and they go back to her place to have some more personal fun. As they have sex, Kelly unexpectedly asphyxiates Victor and Victor experiences something extraordinary. Their relationship blossoms and the sex becomes more extreme, but one night Kelly goes even further which freaks Victor out and he dumps her. But, he can't get her out of his head. Meanwhile, Kelly is been hassled by her ex, culminating in Kelly receiving a head injury, which she attempts to push through until she is found by Victor who takes her to get help. And maybe there's still life in this relationship. Not a lot happens in Kelly + Victor as both of their lives aren't exactly interesting, so the film heats up any time Kelly and Victor get together. Kelly is such an innocent looking cheeky girl that when she pushes the limits, it is pretty full on but that only means it's going to end in only one way. Tough film the recommend, but I really liked Antonia Campbell-Hughes here and hope to see more from her as she seems perfectly suited for exploring the dark side of life. And hopefully in something more interesting than this movie.

Update for 21 January...

About Time is a time-travel romantic comedy where Tim (Domhnall Gleeson) is told by his father (Bill Nighy) that the men in the family can time travel. After using time travel to unsuccessfully to get with his sister's, Kit Kat (Lydia Wilson) friend Charlotte (Margot Robbie), he moves to London to become a lawyer, where he moves in with his failed playwright uncle. One night, he meets Mary (Rachel McAdams) and instantly falls for her, but on the same night, his uncle's comeback play is ruined by an actor suffering stagefright. Tim travels back to make the play go swimmingly, but in the process misses out on meeting Mary. He now uses the little information he has about her to get back into her life. Eventually he does, but it's a lesson learnt on the dangers of time travel. Tim and Mary then go about lives as a married couple and over time, Tim learns to live life without time travel after having chats with his soon-to-be dead father. I love time travel movies as I love trying to work them out, but still I was apprehensive watching a movie made by Richard Curtis as I'm not the biggest fan of his movies. And I've got to say, once Tim and Mary get together, About Time becomes a very flat movie. It sort of meanders to an ending, but Tim and Mary have been living happily ever after from about an hour in and there's still an hour to go. Tim has very few challenges after this and none particularly interesting. And Rachel McAdams' role is very limited although she's the female lead. About Time is a movie that has a strange dip in interest after a quite affable first hour. Hmmm...

Update for 19 January...

Finishing off the Gabrielle Fitzpatrick update with some stuff that I've had lying around for a while. Farewell, My Love usually gets a replay after midnight every couple of months, funnily enough I got this from a recording off the no longer exists 7HD channel. Don't remember the movie fully, something about Gabrielle's character getting revenge on the Russian mob for killing her family. I also remember Sarah Wynter playing a Russian hooker in the movie, but don't think there was anything cappable of her from the movie.

As I mentioned in the last post, Mr. Nice Guy was also on TV last night and bizarrely it was the uncut version that's not available on DVD in English speaking countries. I watched the DVD version and it feels a little off, like something is missing. Apparently the distributor cut it for international release, but as with most Jackie Chan movies, the violence isn't exactly nasty and is done more for the stunt and it seems most of the stuff cut out is fairly harmless. There's some more stuff from the Gabrielle Fitzpatrick bra and panties scene too. Strange that this has happened although Asian movies tend to be cut, usually for baffling reasons more than censorship. This movie was made in Melbourne and I always love watching movies for the past set in Melbourne. And Melbourne c. 1997 looks quite different for today, never mind that the geography of the movie is sometimes off, particularly during the Sammo Hung scene. Also, for a movie that features Jackie Chan facing off against Richard Norton, there's only a brief scuffle between them. Where's the climatic fight?

Also thinking of suing the producers for stealing my idea I had in the 90s that Jackie Chan had a fight scene at Melbourne Central. I'd never seen Mr. Nice Guy before a couple of days ago and had totally forgotten that idea I had 'til I saw that. Can't believe one of my dumbarse ideas is actually seen on the big screen...

Australian VHS Classics Redux for 17 January...

Been ridiculously hot here for the past week, so haven't been much bothered to do new stuff and there hasn't been anything desperate to cap. Plus my computer just cuts out encoding HD videos in this weather...

Got a request to do this series, so here it is. Offspring is a 1996 (although it is dated 1993) melodrama where new Hollywood glamour couple Maria Cassini (Gabrielle Fitzpatrick) and Ben King (Robert Mammone) are given a strange invitation to join Maria's long lost mother in Australia who wants to give them a special marriage present. Maria hates her mother, in fact she told Ben that she was dead. Ben convinces her to go home and after much relectance, Maria gives in. Rose (Chantal Contouri) seems friendly at first, but Maria gives hints that this is a facade and ups her taking of tranquilisers. After Maria completely loses it, Rosa tells of how she was suffering from bipolar disorder and could not handle her mob heavy stepfather. Rosa attempts to seduce Ben, but he gets away disgusted. Maria wakes up and tells her side of the story which involves horrible sexual abuse at the hands of her stepfather and cheered on by Rosa. Ben and Maria decide to leave, but not before one last cup of tea... I haven't seen Offspring since I first capped it in 2002 and remember it being a tawdry little movie, but had totally forgotten how tawdry. There is so much talk of sexual abuse and ambivalent sexual behaviour that it's incredibly tough to like Offspring. Rosa is such an evil bitch (played quite well by Chantal Contouri) that her demise is most welcome. But Offspring's biggest issue is that it's almost 80 minutes of exposition. There is some much talking to describe the situation that I couldn't help but beg for someone to do something to shut the person up. It never ends... Talking, talking, talking about having sex with underage girls. Christ, how can anyone call this movie fun? And the twist (check the title of this movie for what it is) only adds to the ambivalent sexual behaviour, but it's glossed over that if Maria and Ben are half-siblings with Rosa their mother, then what about that scene where Rosa seduces Ben, her son? Yep, it's that type of movie.

As this series was taken from a VHS tape, the quality of the collages and videos are not DVD quality, but they are OK. Offspring was released on DVD in America under the title Deadly Secrets, but it is savagely cut with all of the nudity missing. But, constant talk of sex and sexual abuse is fine? The only reason to watch this movie is missing, why bother? The writer/director of Offspring also made an Australian Classic a year earlier called Fatal Past which I must get a hold of. I remember the cover of that video with 90s Polish sexpot Kasia Figura being groped in her underwear down at the local video barn, but was never game to get it (plus I was probably underage... seems to be the keyword for this post). Never realised that Fatal Past was an Australian movie 'til recently, thought it was a Zalman King movie. Hmmm...

I'll have more from Gabrielle Fitzpatrick in the coming day as I've found my copy of the oft-repeated Farewell, My Love and picked up a copy of Mr. Nice Guy, which is, of course, on TV this weekend. Can't win, don't try...

Update for 11 January...

You know what I don't have a lot of on this site, South African movies. I know you've been thinking it...

One Last Look is a thriller where two sisters from London are taking a bus tour around South Africa. After a dance party, Yasmin's (Stephanie Schildknecht) sister Angie (Anna Capraro) goes missing. Yasmin enlists the help of a man she met at the party, Jules (Martin Kintu), to find Angie and they are directed to a remote property owned by an reclusive artist Frank (Neil Sandilands). When they get there, Frank's dog attacks them, savagely biting Jules and knocking Yasmin unconscious off the motorbike they were riding. Yasmin wakes up and finds that while Frank seems helpful, even agreeing to help find Angie, he is also very mysterious and while they recover from their injuries, Frank disappears for a time. It isn't long before they find out what Frank is hiding and Yasmin and Jules are going to have to hatch a plan to get out of this situation. Not a bad little thriller that loses it in the final act that focuses far too long on Frank's mother issues and isn't it convenient that Yasmin just happens to look like his deceased mother. But for the most part, One Last Look works and is intriguing enough, Frank is a decent villain that does a lot of brooding (explains why he's a world renowned artist too) and newcomer Stephanie Schildknecht is appealing as Yasmin, a headstrong girl who will do anything for her sister. And she's pretty damn pretty, particularly in that dress that Frank gives her (which of course was his mother's). Don't get a lot of South African movies around these parts, so this is a rare treat.

I've done a couple of edits from the videos below because they are long videos and the really good stuff is brief. As I've already said, Stephanie looks real good in that flimsy dress and she ain't wearing a bra, so you do the math.

Redux Friday for 10 January...

A quick redux today from a movie that's chock full of pretty well known actors, but is completely forgetten. Strange movie, something about a struggling actor (Jon Favreau) who is given a job to deliver a bowling ball bag to some cowboy in some small town. There he meets a bunch of weirdos and then the movie turns strange, I don't understand what's going on, so I can't help ya. But, I do remember Rachael Leigh Cook looking real cute and that she wears a see-through top in the movie, which a HD version would surely make clearer. Sadly, I don't think that'll happen.

Update for 7 January...

Foreshadow is a supernatural thriller where reformed juvenile delinquent Jesse Milton (Justin Burford) is now a millionaire playboy who is living it up, although her still laments his long lost younger sister who's been missing for years. One night, he arrives at his latest fling's house and finds her dead on the floor from what looks like rough manhandling. He calls the police and cooperates with the detective (Myles Pollard), but the case seems to go nowhere, especially after it's declared death by natural causes. Jesse is not convinced and decides to do some investigation and finds other similar cases which point to a serial killer. The detective fobs him off, but when the killer starts targeting his friends, Jesse takes matters into his own hands and finds that this is not your normal killer and it could be the key to his missing sister. Low budget Perth based thriller and it definitely shows. The movie isn't exactly breaking new ground with predictable characters especially the seen-it-all cop who comes through in the end and the good female friend who becomes lover when bad stuff happens. It doesn't help that the acting is fairly average and the pacing is erratic. Not really a lot to recommend in Foreshadow I'm afraid.

Australian Classics for 5 January...

Back to the Australian Classics.

The Marsupials: The Howling 3 is a 1987 comedy horror sequel in name only which follows Jerboa Jerboa (Imogen Annesley) who escapes from her cult-like family after the leader Thylo (Max Fairchild) makes a play for her and decides to head to the big city. In Sydney, she meets Donny (Leigh Biolos), who is working on a cheesy horror movie about shapeshifters directed by Jack Citron (Frank Thring). They fall for each other, but there is something a little different about Jerboa. Well, there's the hairyness and the pouch. After being exposed to strobe light at a party, she wakes up at the hospital with the doctors flummoxed by her. Oh and Jerboa is pregnant. Meanwhile, Professor Harry Beckmeyer (Barry Otto) is on the search for a mysterious creature that he is convinced exists and comes across Jerboa, but she escapes before he can find out more about her. Meanwhile, ballerina Olga (Dasha Blahova) is exposed as a werewolf during a rehearsal and runs away to the cult-like family. Jerboa also heads back there where she gives birth to well, something not quite human. With the government on the tail of these creatures, the professor falls for Olga and they settle together while Donny finds Jerboa and after escaping the government's clutches, they decide to start a new life in America with child. The Howling 3 is well, impossible to sum up in a sentence. It's a bizarre, off-beat movie that unlike it's predecessors, is really a horror movie at all. It's been summed up as camp, but it really isn't that camp even with the presence of Frank Thring and Barry Humphries (as Dame Edna). The second half of the movie is surprisingly earnest and bafflingly apes the ending of Bliss (another Barry Otto movie where he goes back to nature). It is also a pro-werewolf movie, even to the point where werewolves are eventually accepted as the same as humans. Well, they aren't really werewolves, but derivative of the possibly extinct thylacine aka Tasmanian tiger (which was also the fascination of the recent movies Dying Breed and The Hunter). This is the first time I've watched this movie in full and I didn't think it would leave me baffled like it did. The Howling 3 is not a great movie, it's very cheesy at times, but it's definitely a fun and highly watchable movie.

Oh, and Imogen Annesley is just so pretty, this was only her second movie after Playing Beatie Bow. Shame her career never took off like others of the time did. One of these days, that mini-series Flair will turn up where Imogen had her best nudity. How about a late night screening on one of your multi-channels, Channel 7?

Bizarrely, The Howling 3 has turned up on Bluray in the US (along with Howling 5 & 6; where's 4?), but it's possibly the shittiest Bluray I've ever seen and have spent far too long trying to fix the video. Also, it's in fullscreen when the DVD is in widescreen and has a director's commentary from the always enjoyable Philippe Mora (Mad Dog Morgan, The Return of Captain Invincible and the Howling 2). So, I've put up both versions with the fullscreen Bluray showing a little more during the birth scene. At least there's that...

Update for 2 January...

OK, time to move on from the Spanish update, well the truth is I've kinda run out of new Spanish stuff. For the moment... Plus I've never capped Sienna Miller before, which is a shocking oversight that needed to be rectified.

Two Jacks is a satire loosely based on a Tolstoy tale about a father and son travelling down the same path. Twenty years ago, Jack Hussar Snr (Danny Huston) is a renowned director who returns to Los Angeles on the verge of being yesterday's man. He is recognised at the airport by wannabe producer Brad (Dave Pressler) who helps him get settled in town, except the welcome mat has being removed and Jack snr is leaning on Brad. Brad invites Jack to a Hollywood party where he becomes enchanted by Dianna (Sienna Miller), who just happens to be Brad's sister. After making love to her, he moves on to the next party and scams studio boss Lorenzo (Richard Portnow), but he can't get Dianna out of his mind. In the present, Dianna's (now Jacqueline Bisset) daughter Lily (Rosie Fellner) is excited at meeting up and coming director Jack Hussar Jnr (son of Danny, Jack Huston) who is in town trying to get his new film ready with Paul (Guy Burnet). Unhappy with his hotel room, Lily invites Jack and Paul to live in their large house. Lily falls for Jack, but in a meeting with studio boss Lorenzo, he introduces Jack to his girl Laura (Scarlett Kapella), who he wants in Jack's movie. After telling him not to touch Laura, in a subsequent meeting Jack and Laura have drunken sex in public and get arrested, which causes Lily to be heartbroken. Director Bernard Rose (Snuff-Movie, Ivansxtc, The Kreutzer Sonata in his digital period) is a tough sell at the best of times. He makes improvised digital features that are usually very talky and border on pretentious, if not completely overstepping that border. Two Jacks is no exception, featuring two stories that don't really go anywhere and there's a lot of Hollywood insider talk which gets annoying after a while. I don't mind Two Jacks, particularly the Danny Huston part of the movie, but there are frustratingly underdeveloped moments that could being expanded, particularly the Jack Snr and Dianna relationship.
