Update for 29 September...

A big update today featuring 4 Spanish movies, well, maybe I'm exaggerating the big part, but the all have a little something in them. Some quick synopses: Sweet Home is a decent little thriller about a young couple who spend a romantic night in a soon-to-be abandoned apartment complex, only for it to turn into a nightmare when 3 masked bandits kill the only tenant in the place and discover that they are not alone. While a Spanish movie, it's 80% in English, so that helps, plus it has a decent turn from Ingrid García Jonsson (who is very nude in Hermosa Juventud) finding herself more than capable against the assailants. Sexo Fácil, Películas Tristes is a drama about an Argentine screenwriter in Madrid trying to write a romantic comedy only for his own love life falling apart around him. Las Ovejas no Pierden el Tren is a comedy about a family who are struggling in different way including a writer who hasn't written a book in 10+ years who takes his family to the country to avoid distraction and improve his marriage, but ends up going in a completely different direction. A sister who desperately wants to get married and a brother who has just separated from his wife and is now dating a much younger woman, but is finding that relationship more complex than he'd like. Not bad, a few laughs here and there. Gotta say I didn't/couldn't (no subtitles) watch Felices 140 but from what I gathered, it's about a family getting together for a high profile surgeon's 40th birthday (played by Maribel Verdú, no offense to Maribel, she looks great, but I've been watching her in movies for over 25 years, there's no way she's 40... just looked it up, she's 45, OK, I accept that, just seems to been around forever) and the celebrations go pear-shaped when she accidentally kills someone. And the group decide to cover it up. I'm assuming it's a black comedy by that plot.

Update for 23 September...

Blunt Force Trauma is a drama about John and Colt (Ryan Kwanten and Freida Pinto) who are two gunslingers who meet at an illegal duelling meet in Mexico. John is an extremely fast draw and is going from meet to meet for the money. Colt is attempting to look for her brother who is also a gunslinger. The two form a relationship of sorts after the meet mainly because of their common interests and both being lost souls. John is offered a chance at big money for a gunfight with a big shot if he continues his good form. On their way to the next gunfight, John and Colt are pulled over by two cops who seem to have something more devious in mind and set up an impromptu and possibly deadly gunfight with a crim they picked up. John decides to shoot dead the cops and with Colt leaves the scene quickly. At the next gunfight, Colt is made an offer with another gunslinger who may know about her brother and when she wins the fight, he tells and shows her that her brother is dead. John and Colt then part ways. Meanwhile, John is flirting with form, allowing himself to get shot and then getting involved in a turkey shoot that leaves him badly injured. Colt comes back for him and finds him concussed after the turkey shoot. The two continue their relationship and seem to have fallen for one another. At the next gunfight, John is given the chance for big money in a gunfight against Zorringer (Mickey Rourke), but this time it is without bulletproof vests. Meandering movie, never really gathering any steam emotion wise, but does have some quite wild gun duels that make the movie watchable for the most part. The duel with the big bloke is absolutely wild, but apart from that (and some nudity from Freida Pinto), Blunt Force Trauma is nothing special.

Update for 22 September...

The Overnight is an offbeat comedy where loving couple Alex and Emily (Adam Scott and Taylor Schilling) move to Los Angeles with their young son and attempt to make a go of it. One day at the park, their son plays with another boy whose parents, Kurt and Charlotte (Jason Schwartzman and Judith Godrèche), they hit it off with and Kurt and Charlotte invite them over to their house for dinner. Alex and Emily accept, as they don't know too many people in Los Angeles, and everything goes fine until Kurt and Charlotte suggest that to let their son sleep at their house while they hang around longer. First, Kurt shows them some of Charlotte's acting, which turns out to be an instructional video for a breast pump including Charlotte showing her breasts. Later, Kurt and Charlotte decide to go for a nude swim the pool to the horror of Alex and Emily who decide to join them but with their underwear on. The two couples seem to be hitting it off despite the awkwardness, but there seems to be an underlying agenda with Kurt and Charlotte. What it is will take Alex and Emily on a wild ride they were not expecting when they took up the invitation. Interesting movie with the feel of those Duplass brothers indie movies (unsurprisingly, they are producers of The Overnight) that has its funny moments although strangely not as darkly funny as I thought it would be. All four leads are good and there are few interesting twists even if it does end where you expect it would. And there's a surprising reliance on fake penises...

Update for 18 September...

A couple of quick series today.

The Road Within is a drama about Vincent (Robert Sheehan) who suffers from Tourette Syndrome, is taken to a clinic run by Mia (Kyra Sedgwick) by his wannabe politician father Robert (Robert Patrick) mainly so that Vincent can be out of the way while he campaigns. At the clinic, Vincent shares a room with OCD clean freak Alex (Dev Patel), which starts badly and then he is given a tour of the facility by Marie (Zoë Kravitz), who suffers from anorexia. When Vincent 'attacks' a kid from a neighbouring school, it gives Marie an idea to steal Mia's car keys so they can go on a trip. Alex attempts to stop them, but Vincent bundles him into the car and he unwillingly tags along. The three go on a drive with their only specific location being 'the ocean', while Mia calls Robert and they go after the kids, begrudgingly so for Robert as he has to halt campaigning. When they are tracked down and about to be taken back, Marie and Vincent trick Robert so that they can take Robert's car while Alex now willingly tags along. Their journey continues where Vincent and Marie falls for each other as the three continue to fight and they also help each other have minor breakthroughs. OK road movie where the three leads are good enough to keep a simple story about the trio of misfits finding themselves, well sort of, going for it's entire length. Not much to the movie but still works.

A Thousand Kisses Deep is a time travel drama (of sorts) where Mia (Jodie Whittaker) sees an old woman jump from a building she just left after picking up her dead father's belongings from Max (David Warner), the caretaker of the building. With the dead woman is a bunch of papers and a photo which is of Mia and her former boyfriend Ludwig (Dougray Scott). This startles Mia as she did not know the woman, so she goes back to Max to see if her can help with an explanation. Mia convinces Max to let her into the dead woman's apartment for a look around without touching anything, but Mia recognises that many of the belongings are hers. She confronts Max with a letter, where he tells her that by removing the letter she has changed the order of the world and then takes Mia into the elevator to fix this. At the floor she gets off she sees and talks to Ludwig, who is attempting to woo his girlfriend who just happens to be a younger version of herself. She watches them as Ludwig tells the younger Mia that he is going to America to further his career. On the way out, she picks up younger Mia's cat, but Max tells her that this puts the order of the world further out of shape. Mia now goes on a journey to different moments in her life that will have a major impact on her life, finding the Ludwig is a terrible pig of a person and the reason her life is a mess, but going through her life, right back to when she was a child and beyond, she realises how much of an impact Ludwig has had on her life and now she has to find out how to fix it and get herself (and Max) out of this time trap and possibly change her own fate. I love a time travel story, but A Thousand Kisses Deep is one gigantic mess of a movie that is so baffling that enormous leaps of faith and logic have to made to accept much of this story. For one, Mia, pretty much looking the same as she does in many scene interacts with other characters as herself, but the other character think she is another woman named Mia. What the hell? This is all wrapped up in such a bizarre fashion that not only would it have completely changed her fate, it would... no, that doesn't happen, I'm confused... It does have one interesting twist which is also a bit fucked up, but apart from that, A Thousand Kisses Deep is a total mess, making little sense and... I just don't know...

Update for 15 September...

i-Lived is a thriller about Josh (Jeremiah Watkins), a man who is going through a bad patch with no job, no money and avoiding his landlord and also recently broke up with his cheating girlfriend. He spends his time reviewing apps to no one and then he happens on an app called i-Lived, which attempts to improve your life in a goal-oriented fashion. One night, Josh goes out to a club with his friend Bobby (Chris Mena) who has a girl lined up for him, but that falls through. But then the i-Lived app starts messaging him and suggests that he pick up a girl from the bar. He decides on Greta (Sarah Power) and manages to hit it off with her. From there, Josh follows the advice of the app and attempts to improve himself, leading to more time with Greta, a job offer and remarkably his mother's cancer going into remission. Things are going extremely well for Josh until he decides to unsubscribe from the app and very quickly everything goes to shit. He loses Greta, his mother takes a turn for the worse and the job offer seems to have never existed. Back to where he was pre-app, Josh desperately re-signs to get his mother healthy again, but the app begins to make darker demands of Josh including kidnapping someone. And after reading the terms of agreement, he begins to think he's sold his soul to the Devil. When Josh kidnaps his landlord, things start looking up again, but is it all worth it? Ah, the old Faustian pact gets another run in a movie, always goes the same way and never seems to end well. Nothing new here, well maybe that the Devil comes in the form of a phone app, but apart from that you know the story. Gets by fine and Sarah Power is decidedly hot, but there's really nothing much more to recommend it.

Sadly, the source was especially dark during the sex scenes, so tough to see all the good stuff even after a significant brightening of the source. Thankfully, Sarah has a great nude scene from her appearance on Californication if you would like a better look.

Australian Redux for 12 September...

Three more HD upgrades of Australian 'Classics' today.

I gotta say that the fact that Lady, Stay Dead is on Bluray is possibly the most baffling choice I've seen in a while, not that I'm complaining, there's some good nudity in it and I don't mind this sleazefest, but this movie is long forgotten, so much so that it has never been released on DVD. But, someone has lovingly put this on Bluray and funnily enough, you can tell how forgotten it is because the Bluray transfer is full of scratches off the film source. I capped Lady, Stay Dead back in January 2012 and having a look back at what came up with, the VHS source was actually pretty damn good, plus you get the added bonus of seeing a little more down below on full screen.

Also, I usually remove previous videos after I've updated them, but in the case of Lady, Stay Dead, I've kept the VHS videos because I think they offer a point of difference which usually doesn't happen between DVD and Bluray. And I've edited the lengthy video of Deborah Coulls in a see-through dress with the edit including just the nudity from that scene.

The other two movies are both Umbrella Blurays, both look pretty good too and on the Dogs In Space Bluray I noticed in one scene that you get a better look at Saskia Post's nipples in one scene (see pics below), something I didn't notice from the DVD. So, strike another one for Bluray!

Australian Redux for 11 September...

Had a few old Australian movies turns up on Bluray recently, so it's time for upgrade. This update will be in two parts, 3 movies today and maybe a couple more tomorrow if I can finish them off in time.

First capped Long Weekend in May 2012, a pretty decent environmental thriller that was remade in 2008, that is largely forgotten. I capped Turkey Shoot in April 2011 and it was also remade in 2014. Both versions of the movie was on the Bluray, which was handy. You can check out previous collages and what I think of the movies from the above links, although I will say that I'm still baffled as to how the new Turkey Shoot could be worse than the already terrible original...

Proof, which I first capped in October 2004 so pre-website, is a 1991 drama debut from Jocelyn Moorhouse (How to Make an American Quilt and the upcoming The Dressmaker, first movie in 18 years also wife of Muriel's Wedding director P.J. Hogan) about Martin (Hugo Weaving), a blind man who has an antagonistic relationship with his only human connection, his housemaid Celia (Genevieve Picot), until one day when he accidentally injures a cat at the back of a Chinese shop where Andy (Russell Crowe) is working. They bond while waiting at the vet and Martin asks Andy if he can describes the photographs that he takes as 'proof' of how the world is. With Andy, Martin has a friend who he feels he can trust, but Celia is not happy about this and she attempts to seduce Martin after bribing him to go with her to a concert. When that fails, she sets her sights on Andy and they begin an affair which will change their dynamic forever. Great movie that I hadn't seen in a while, all three leads are excellent, some great moments of humour inserted into the compelling story. It's one of my favourite Australian movies ever.

Update for 8 September...

Haven't done an update from Australian short films for a while, with this update motivated by Blood Pulls A Gun being released in the last week or so.

Blood Pulls A Gun is about a teenage girl Alice (Odessa Young, someone to look out for) who lives in a hotel owned by her father which is a boring life until Blood (Josh McConville) and his girlfriend (Tess Haubrich) stay for a while and this enlivens the girl. Not a bad little movie and Odessa Young is impressive here and looks like she's going to make it big. Watching this short finally made me to get around to watching another short from 2009, Drowning, a gay drama about a teenage boy who's hopelessly in love with his best friend (played by Xavier Samuel), who is not gay. They go to his girlfriend's house (Tess Haubrich) and spend the afternoon/evening together. Pretty decent short, sadly I'm not able to find a decent quality version of it, except there's an excerpt from the short in much better quality available that just happens to be of Tess Haubrich's nude scene, so score! Love to get the bikini scene in better quality too, looks great there. Tess is someone who is currently getting better roles, so maybe bigger things for her. Only nude scenes are in these two shorts as far as I know, but she has had some sexy stuff in the last Jack Irish telemovie and was recently on Home and Away for a while.

Quickly the other two shorts, Green Eyed is comedy about an upwardly mobile jerk (Mark Leonard Winter) who is upstaged by his alien alter ego and he become very annoyed about this. Told in the style of Bret Easton Ellis, not a bad short. Would love to see another short starring Penelope Mitchell, Meth to Madness, which looks very interesting but can't seem to find that anywhere. That short also stars Bella Heathcote, both actresses recently starred in the horror thriller The Curse of Downers Grove, which is written by Bret Easton Ellis... It's a full circle today.

Last is the drama At The Tattooist which I recorded off SBS a while back and I thought I lost, but I found a whole bunch of recording deep down on a hard drive, so I can finally make a quick video of Adelaide Clemens from the short. Also stars Indiana Evans, Cariba Heine and Alycia Debnam-Carey, which is a pretty impressive young female cast, this short, well, err, largely forgettable.

Update for 7 September...

Queen of Carthage is a drama about Amos (Shiloh Fernandez), an American who is currently drifting around New Zealand with his only real company being talking on the phone to his sister Jane (voiced by Rose McIver in her Masters of Sex voice). That is until he meets Phoenix (Amanda Tito) after she stops him from stealing a postcard and they become friendly. Amos then meets Graham (Graham Candy), a talented musician/singer with potential and a lust for life and Amos is instantly attracted to him, although he is a relationship with Simi (Keisha Castle-Hughes). While living between Phoenix's home, much to the chagrin of her brother and Graham and Simi's place, Amos attempts to convince Graham to come back to California with him to record his music. One night, Amos and Graham have some fun with Phoenix and her friend, but during the night, Amos decides to kiss Graham, much to Graham's disgust. While Graham calms down and continues to be friends with Amos, things start to fall apart for Amos including Phoenix wanting more from their relationship and escalating the friction between Phoenix and her brother as well as been shown up as fraudulent at a party by another American, which results in Simi finding Graham with another woman and causes them to split up. After destroying a guitar Amos made for him, Graham attempts to get rid of Amos, but by now, Amos's obsession with Graham is at it's peak and it's going to end in tragedy. OK movie, not really adding anything new to the obsession genre, but the story is good enough to make it fairly watchable. The ending is a little baffling in fact, the whole final act doesn't seem to be explained properly. I don't really understand what his sister has to do with it, let alone whether or not she's real or just another of Amos's constructs. Interesting enough story that could be explained a bit better, but still worth a look.

Update for 5 September...

Zipper is a drama about a rising star in the District Attorney's office, Sam Ellis (Patrick Wilson), who is happily married to Jeannie (Lena Headey) and is now in line for higher office when a power broker (Richard Dreyfuss) asks for his interest. But, there is a lingering thought in Sam's mind that he wants more and he discovers a high class escort service might scratch that itch. He finally succumbs and calls the service and even with some reluctance, he has sex with the escort. Sam decides that this is the only time he will do this and moves on, but that itch does not go away and he continues to use the service, making sure never to have sex with the same girl more than once, but this causes a strain in his marriage, finances and then eventually his health. He also finds out that the FBI are investigating the escort service and tells them about this, to which they shut down everything. Now, Sam suspects he is under investigation and he still wants to have sex with the escorts and it doesn't help that his office is prosecuting the case. Then everything comes to a head when investigative report and friend of his wife Coaker (Ray Winstone) finds out about his dealings. How will Sam get out of this mess? OK drama that has it's issues like his wife didn't suspect his problems until he told her. Really? Not even after the accident? Where's the money going? Come on! This makes the ending a bit sloppy and probably inevitable too. The movie goes along fine otherwise, but it does stretch credibility once it begins to fall apart for Sam. Not bad, but...

Update for 3 September...

Inherent Vice is about 'Doc' (Joaquin Phoenix), a self-styled private investigator in 1970 who gets a visit from his ex ol' lady Shasta Fay Hepworth (Katherine Waterston) who wants him to find stop her current beau, real estate developer Mickey Wolfmann (Eric Roberts), from being 'kidnapped' by his wife and her lover and taken to a sanitarium. The next day, Doc gets a visit from former crim Kahlil Tariq (Michael K. Williams) who asks him to find an old cellmate who is a bodyguard for Mickey and leads him to a 'massage parlour' in the middle of nowhere where he investigates, only to be knocked out. He wakes up and finds the body of the bodyguard next to him and numerous cops surrounding him. He is arrested and interrogated by a notorious cop 'Bigfoot' (Josh Brolin), who tells him that Mickey and Shasta Fay are missing and that he may be involved, but with no real evidence on anything to go further and the help from his lawyer friend Sauncho Smilax (Benicio Del Toro), Doc is released. He is then hired by Hope (Jena Malone) to find her saxophonist husband (Owen Wilson) who she thinks is dead, but not really. Doc now has to find three people and it will involve dealing with a drug syndicate run by dentists called the Golden Fang or a boat that mysteriously arrived from the Bermuda Triangle and other weird and wild characters. Bizarre crime comedy based on the book by Thomas Pynchon that I liked quite a lot. It doesn't really make much sense, nor is it supposed too, but somehow, Doc manages to solve everything, I guess. It is a slow, fun ride through Los Angeles in the 70s and if you have the patience and don't mind that it isn't a straight ride to the destination, you'll probably like the movie too. But, Inherent Vice is not for everyone, that's for sure...

Update for 1 September...

Wild is about Cheryl (Reese Witherspoon), who is about to embark on an 1000+ mile hike as a way to deal with recent events in her life including the death of her mother (Laura Dern) and the dissolution of her marriage to Paul (Thomas Sadoski). Along the way, Cheryl remembers how she got to this point in her life, including the trauma of her mother's death and her way of dealing with it including becoming a heroin addict and sleeping with many men. Cheryl comes to realise a few things about herself too as the challenge of the hike starts to get to her. Interesting movie about a woman attempting to move on with her life in a very different way by challenging herself to complete a lengthy hiking trail all by herself. Witherspoon is well cast as Cheryl and has to carry the movie by herself, which she does admirably.
