Update for 30 December...

Heading back to the late 90s/early 00s for today's update. Had never seen Cherry Falls before, from memory it was released straight-to-DVD here. It's a surprisingly good if generic slasher horror movie where someone is killing the virgins at a high school, so word gets around about this and everyone loses their head and the kids have a big sex party to 'save' themselves, of course that's not the reason why the killer is killing, it's just plain old revenge. Australian director Geoffrey Wright of Romper Stomper fame directed this movie, who has only directed one movie since Cherry Falls, 2006's Macbeth, so it's been 10 years since his last movie which is a shame as even if his movies have issues, they're at least worth a look. Cherry Falls is one of the better slasher movies to come from that late 90s renaissance.

Hadn't seen Last Man Standing in a while, very much influenced by Japanese samurai movies but also very much a B-movie with an A-List cast. Not much else to say apart from Alexandra Powers seems to have quit acting a long time ago.

Rewatching Dead Man On Campus for the first time since I saw it in cinemas back in the day and I barely remembered anything more than it's dicey concept. Basically, there's an arcane law where if your college roommate dies, you get straight As for the rest of the year. So when two roommates begin failing hard, they hatch a plan to find a nutjob and coerce them into killing themselves. Hilarity ensues, well not really because the concept is incredibly dicey and the nutjobs are so broad and obvious. Lochlyn Munro's hyper nutjob gets a few laughs with the crazy stuff he does, but there's not much else on offer. No way this movie gets made today, even as a black comedy which this movie abandons to go for a more broad comedy. Plus the two leads are so obnoxious and you can't even laugh with them and their crazy antics. And the long bit with suicidal singer is just plain bad. It's hard to see how this movie got made to begin with. And to think there's was another movie released at the same time with the exact same plot, Dead Man's Curve (which I've never seen). Baffling...

Update for 28 December...

Couple of newly released Australian movies.

Dawn (formerly known as Touch) is a drama where Dawn (Leeanna Walsman) knocks out a funeral director for an unknown reason and goes on the run with her daughter. After being caught sleeping on the road by a local cop Nick (Greg Hatton), he directs her to a nearby hotel run by the sleazy Carl (Shane Connor) where she sets up with her daughter, who she sneaks in. Meanwhile, Dawn's husband John (Matt Day) is attempting to catch up with her and cleaning up her mess. At the hotel, Dawn has casual sex with Nick, but their relationship is prickly as she is distant with her mind elsewhere. With John closing in fast on the mother and daughter, a shocking truth is unveiled. And I'm fast asleep... Painfully slow drama that attempts to run on one twist that is incredibly obvious early on and just goes around in circles until John catches up with Dawn. The final act is actually quite tender and well done, but it's a struggle to get there and the obvious twist is more than a hindrance. Disappointing...

I Am Evangeline is a sci-fi thriller where Evangeline (Georgia Flood), a clone who has escaped her master, is looking for her original, Diana (also Georgia Flood), as she believes that a procedure using Diana's brain cells could make her fully human and stop her from her current fate, death. In the process of looking, Evangeline accidentally kills a dressmaker who was making a dress for Diana during a struggle. She is helped by Ten (Benjamin Hoetjes), who worked for the dressmaker and he attempts to help her get to Diana. Meanwhile, her master has sent thugs after Evangeline to bring her back so that she can continue to be his sex slave. While avoiding being recaptured and attempting to stay alive, she finally meets Diana and finds out that she was an unsanctioned clone and that her master stole Diana's DNA to make his very own Diana fuck toy. Diana outrightly rejects Evangeline's offer and is then recaptured and imprisoned by her master. With the help of one of her master's thugs and Ten, she escapes and makes one last drastic attempt to get Diana's brain cells to save herself. OK sci-fi thriller that is a little low key and shows its budgetary constraints as it doesn't have much of a sci-fi feel. But the plot is intriguing enough to keep interest and I quite like Georgia Flood, who is maybe one of the most underrated actresses in Australia currently. I Am Evangeline is available for free on Vimeo if you want to take a look for yourself.

A quick word on the videos from Dawn, I screen captured them from Google Play, which is the only place the movie is currently available and I'm still a bit green on screen capturing so the videos are not perfect. They are a little jittery, noticeable but not distracting, plus they are in streaming HD which is not full HD, so background colours are a little one dimensional at times. It's still perfectly fine to watch. Also, I'm not 100% convinced that this is my doing as I've captured HD video off other streaming services and haven't had such problems. I dunno, as I say, I'm still learning. Hopefully it turns up on iTunes or something although I have my doubts we are going to see Dawn available elsewhere.

Update for 27 December...

Quick series today from the British movie Kids in Love about a kid who's about to start a prestigious internship but has a break before he starts and during this break he meets a gorgeous French girl (Alma Jodorowsky) who he befriends and then immerses himself in her world and with her friends and it changes him. The girl remains elusive even when he thinks he's close to her. OK movie, but very much a young person's movie.

There's a video below where two girls are getting it on with a lucky bloke with the brunette in a bra clearly Gala Gordon and my first cursory thought and was going to go with the other topless girl being Alma. But then I went through the movie again to get caps and talked myself out of it being Alma as it doesn't make sense plot wise plus the topless girl is wearing various necklaces and a green thing on her left wrist, something Alma definitely didn't wear in the previous scenes, also the topless girl's hair seems different. It would make more sense if it was Cara Delevingne as her and Gala's characters are always together in the movie, but then she wasn't wearing the necklaces either plus she has different colour fingernails, the topless girl has red fingernails, which was Alma's colour funnily enough. A few scenes on, a very brief shot in a montage has a fourth girl who's not seen or mentioned again. And she's wearing a green thing on her left wrist and a ring on her thumb as she does in the topless scene. Sadly can't see necklaces or fingernails but she has similar hair.

So, who is she? In the credits, which is thankfully in order of appearance, this character first appears after Dave is introduced and before the waitress in a later scene. As no other character is introduced in the scenes between this, I conclude it's Hannah Fritsch even though we never know the character's name. No real pics of Hannah around as this is her first screen appearance (apparently) so can't positively conclude this, but I'm very sure that this is the correct answer. Probably...

Update for 26 December...

A Kiss And A Promise is a serial killer drama where husband and wife, David (Mick Rossi) and Samantha (Natasha Gregson Wagner), run a Bed and Breakfast in a small town where they have a 'permanent' guest in Charlie Matthews (Sean Power), a professional bullshitter who tells people he is a published author amongst other things. The three have a special relationship where Samantha shares David with Charlie, but Charlie's way behind on the rent and patience is wearing thin. Turns out David is a sociopath who kills stray women, usually during sex, as it fulfills something he can't do to Samantha. When a runaway is found brutally murdered, two detectives (Patrick Bergin and Robert Miano) investigate and find another victim who has died in a similar way. Meanwhile, Charlie's luck has changed and is now paying off his debts, but nobody knows where he's getting this money until Samantha goes looking and it's the final straw for Charlie. With the police closing in on David and Charlie on his way out, a shocking twist will change all their lives. Not a bad little movie that works better when it focuses on the complicated threesome and the killings than it does on the investigation which hinges on the luckiest break ever when the detectives are clueless. The ending is also a bit silly, even more so with the suggestion that it's based on a true story. But there's enough going on to make an interesting tale.

Merry Fuckin' Christmas...

All about Imogen Poots for the Christmas update.

Frank & Lola is a relationship mystery drama following sous-chef Frank (Michael Shannon) and student Lola (Imogen Poots), two people currently at the peak of their intense relationship. One day. Lola catches up with old friend Keith (Justin Long), an entrepreneur who helps Lola with employment making Frank jealous and he struggles with the closure of his Las Vegas restaurant and taking random catering gigs. Lola assures Franks that she loves him but a few days later, Lola is very late for a night out and turns up crying but doesn't really say why. Later, Lola tells Frank that when in Paris, she knew a man Alan (Michael Nyqvist) who ended up raping her and this sets off Frank who begins to think of avenging Lola. Luck has it that Keith has set up an working interview with a famous family in Paris to be their chef. He goes to the interview, which he aces, and then sets about getting revenge on Alan, but things are not as they seem. Lola looks very much to be lying and this sets Frank on a journey to finding out who the real Lola is and whether or not their relationship is worth salvaging. Intriguing mystery with two great lead performances and Michael Shannon is always worth watching with his sheer intensity. The way that this relationship unravels kept me guessing or just shaking my head in disbelief at who really had control and the ending seals this. Definitely worth a look if you want an intriguing mystery unfold. Plus it has a pretty decent nude scene from Imogen Poots to start the movie if you need extra incentive.

A Long Way Down is a British comedy/drama about four people who meet on the top of a building on New Year's Eve who are all planning to jump to their deaths. Martin (Pierce Brosnan) is jumping because his life was ruined when he had sex with a girl who turned out to be underage. Maureen (Toni Collette) is jumping because she feels helpless to do anything for herself or her severely disabled son. Jess (Imogen Poots) loves people too much and is heartbroken about her latest bust up, but it could also be related to her long missing sister. JJ (Aaron Paul) says that he has inoperable brain cancer but he is hiding the real reason. The four talk each other out of jumping and unexpectedly form a bond where they help each other with their problems with the goal of getting to Valentine's Day. OK comedy, never really getting to any great heights but not a bad movie either.

Update for 20 December...

And you thought I was finished with the Spanish updates...

El Cadáver de Anna Fritz is a thriller where overnight morgue worker Pau (Albert Carbó) receives a very special guest in Anna Fritz (Alba Ribas), a famous actress who has died suddenly. He invites his friends Javi (Bernat Saumell) and Iván (Cristian Valencia) to get a close look at the dead actress and maybe a few photos for the personal collection, but Iván wants more and convinces the others to have sex with Anna's corpse. While Pau is raping the corpse of Anna, she miraculously wakes up into a nightmare. The men freak out and try to figure out what to do next as Anna pleads with them to let her go and she won't tell about what had preceded. Iván is having none of that and wants to kill her again, well she's was already dead he reasons, but Javi protests and in a scuffle, Iván almost kills Javi and now they have two problems. Anna attempts to make an escape but her body had begun to atrophy and she isn't getting far. Pau is conflicted but wants to help Anna and Iván just wants out with the least fuss possible while Javi bleeds out. This is not going to end well for at least one of them and maybe all of them. Short and sharp B-thriller pretty much set entirely in the morgue that's while not without it's issues, is a fairly effective thriller. The subject matter will probably put a few off (probably not many reading this though...) but that part of the story is fairly short and the movie is more a survival thriller. Alba Ribas is an affecting and an alluring corpse as she desperately tries to get out of this situation. I've only ever seen Alba in one other movie, Diario de una Ninfómana (Diary of a Sex Addict), where she briefly played the younger version of the lead character. Funnily enough the lead character was played by Belen Fabra, who briefly turns up in this movie.

Update for 15 December...

Time to catch up on Australian movies with this update featuring 5 newly released Australian movies.

Red Billabong is a creature thriller where a couple of brothers are looking to offload their property but can't decide between the local Aboriginal concern their grandfather recommended or a developer. Turns out that a so called mythical bunyip actually lives on the property and is looking for three wives, which are conveniently provided by one of the brother's drug dealer friends. One by one, the girls come under the bunyip's spell and with the local Aboriginal concern wanting to kill the bunyip and the developer and the brother's long lost father wanting to capture the bunyip for money, it's going to be fun on the farm. Takes forever to get going and ends up being nearly 2 hours because of it and the bunyip stuff is a bit silly. Disappointing, to be honest...

Drama is a drama (what..?) where an Australian actress (writer-director Sophie Mathisen) arrives in Paris to see her best friend who now lives there, but is actually in Paris for a play. Well, actually, she's in Paris to try and get back with her ex who is working in Paris. The actress annoys her friend's boyfriend and attempts to join in with his friends. She finally meets her ex, but it doesn't go as well as she would like. Not much to the movie, but it's actually not bad at all and how you'll appreciate the movie will depends on how you take the lead character, who isn't the easiest character to like.

Free Of Thought is a stream-of-consciousness drama about a young couple who are very much in love, but when they make a movie together with the girl as the director, things start to fall apart he compensates by smoking more and more marijuana. When he suggests that they go to Paris, she decides to leave him, but he goes anyway by himself. Wow, this was some sort of movie, just like watching random scenes that are put in linear order, but never really explains anything including the break up which seems to have happened off camera. And forget plot, there's none of that here. Don't see too many movies like this get made. Funnily enough, this movie isn't on IMDB, so that tells you how obscure it is.

Nice Package is a comedy thriller about a thief who is tasked to steal a package from a safe, but is interrupted by a woman who he takes hostage. But with nowhere to go, he decides to take her to his gay friend's house where the hostage situation turns practically into a party. It's not long before his boss and his dimwitted competition is coming after the thief and the package. But, who is playing who and what is in the package? OK movie with a laugh or two but man, that gay character is really broad.

Goldstone is a thriller and follow up to Mystery Road where a cop (Aaron Pedersen reprising his role) comes to Goldstone, a small town in the middle of nowhere to look for a missing Asian woman that might be a part of sex trafficking. The locals are suspicious of the outsider cop including the local cop (Alex Russell), the kindly Mayor (Jacki Weaver) and the mine manager (David Wenham) and they want him gone even if it means murder. As the conspiracy rises and the pressure against the cop increases, the end result might not be to everyone's liking. Good thriller with good performances including Weaver basically reprising her Animal Kingdom role. While the movie is cliché-filled, it still rolls along quite nicely. Strangely, I remember watching Mystery Road but I barely remember anything from it. Hmm...

Update for 12 December...

Well, apologies for moving from the Spanish update but these movies are just begging to be capped.

Sugar Mountain is a thriller set in Alaska where brothers Liam (Shane Coffey) and Miles (Drew Roy) are two strugglers who have run into money problems and then their boat is been repossessed. Desperate, Miles with his long-term girlfriend/neighbour Lauren (Haley Webb) who Liam has a crush on, hatch a plan of survival in the icy wilderness where they can sell their story to make the money. Liam reluctantly agrees and things go to plan at first, but then Miles falls before he can make his hideout and he isn't found as quickly as hoped. Lauren's father Jim (Cary Elwes), who absolutely hates the brothers, smells a rat and arrests Liam and charges him with murdering his brother. This sets off Joe (Jason Momoa), who helped with the scam and he wants his money and Miles not coming back means no money, so he gets drunk so that he can pay a visit to Liam and get what's his. More than a week goes by and Miles hasn't been found, so Jim lets Liam out and follows him and Lauren thinking that he will catch them red-handed. They go to the hiding place and see no sign of him even being there which has them really worried. Liam and Lauren get closer as they wait for new of Miles and then a miracle, Miles is found barely alive and things are going to be alright. Well, in theory... From Australian director Richard Gray (Summer Coda, Blinder) who now carves out a living as a genre director in America, this twist-riddled tale never knows when enough is enough with a final act that has so many twists it's hard to keep up with why everything happened (or even what). The movie is intriguing enough plot wise, but Jason Momoa's character only seems to be there for some physical presence which isn't needed and that last twist with him is completely stupid. If the movie wasn't so twist happy it might've been a little gem, but instead it falls just short of that mark.

Uncle Nick is a Christmas comedy where Nick (Brian Posehn) goes to his despised younger brother Cody's (Beau Ballinger) place for Christmas, who has shacked up with the rich older Sophie (Paget Brewster). Told in running with a retelling of a 1974 Cleveland Indians baseball match that devolved into chaos when the bar was selling 10 cent beers, the night goes pretty much the same disastrous way. Nick's plans for the evening is to get suitably wasted, but not before scoring with Sophie's daughter Valerie (Melia Renee) who he's formed a connection with via Facebook. Also at the party are Sophie's gamer son Marcus (Jacob Houston) and Nick and Cody's sister Michelle (Missi Pyle) and her baseball podcasting husband Kevin (Scott Adsit). Things are looking good Nick with Valerie seeming very much up for it as she drinks more and more, but Nick has a lingering thoughts of his dead girlfriend Emily. Slowly, the evening gets worse for Nick to the point where he even rejects Valerie's advances. But, he might be able to salvage the evening in a most unlikely way. Not a bad little Christmas gone to hell comedy with a few laughs and the device of telling it to the baseball game corresponds really well. Worth a look if you're into a dark Christmas comedy playing a similar tune to Bad Santa plus hottie Melia Renee makes some serious good eye candy.

Update for 9 December...

Still going with the new Spanish movies with 3 diverse movies today. Al Final del Túnel is the only one I watched and it's a pretty good genre movie set and made in Argentina about a disabled man who overhears the plans of a crew of robbers who are planning to rob a bank vault by tunneling in from underneath and also under his house. So he devises a plan to steal the money from a certain box before they do, but it comes with the complication of new tenants, a mother (Clara Lago) and daughter, and the mother may be involved with the head of crew. Pretty decent stuff for the most part and the robbery section of the movie is very intriguing.

Sadly the copy of Sicarivs: La Noche y El Silencio is incredibly dim, like a layer of haze was put over it, so the videos aren't the best, I tried to fix them a bit, but there isn't much I could do. Shame as there's some pretty decent nudity in the movie. Also a helluva lot of naked chicks getting shot in this movie...

Redux for 3 December...

Some 90s Spanish movies I capped in back in 2003 off a showing on the TV channel SBS, which was the only way I could watch/cap Spanish movies back in the day. These updates are from DVDs and I doubt we will see them in any better quality. Also guaranteed I watched these movies way too many times on SBS as I remember Cha-Cha-Chá vividly, even though I haven't seen it in a decade or so. Yep, I remember the whole terribly obvious plot although it does have a couple of good laughs in the movie and that Ana Álvarez nude scene is pretty darn nice though it's all too brief. Not so much with Taxi (well, apart from the Ingrid Rubio nude scene).
