Redux Friday for 29 July...

A couple of movies from the recent past that I missed or just ignored when they were released.

Hell Baby is a comedy about a white couple (Rob Corddry and Leslie Bibb) who buy a 'renovator's dream' in a black neighbourhood. Also, the house is possessed by some demon which finds it's way into the couple's unborn child. With the help of the Vatican and a couple of local cops, they try to stop the demon baby. Terrible comedy, barely any laughs and most of the attempts are incredibly bad. About the only scene worth watching in the movie is the lengthy Riki Lindhome nude scene which is one of the rare slightly funny scenes, oh and the other thing.

The Quiet Ones is a British horror movie where an university professor (Jared Harris) invites an introverted young man (Sam Claflin) to join his assistants (Erin Richards and Rory Fleck-Byrne) in filming an experiment where the professor attempts to get rid of the spirit of a doll from a disturbed patient (Olivia Cooke). Of course, it doesn't quite go to plan and the introverted young man is having severe doubts about the experiment and attempts to help the patient escape. OK horror movie, nothing you haven't seen before. Some very quick nudity from Olivia Cooke, about four frames, a total blink and miss thing that a video doesn't do justice to.

Going to do a few more movies from the recent past that I'm just catching up on, mainly as a replacement to redux series as they are drying up, particularly as 90%+ of movies I've capped from 2011 onwards are already in HD, so no need to redo them and those that need redoing aren't readily available in HD.

Update for 24 July...

Just releasing some quick series from recent release Australian movies and I've also gotten the Bluray versions of a couple of movies and found some more to cap.

Odessa Young's appears in a couple of releases this year with prominent roles in both. Looking For Grace is a drama about a couple (Richard Roxburgh and Radha Mitchell) who look for their teenage daughter (Odessa Young), who has run away from home with her best friend and has taken a lot of money from her father's safe that shouldn't have been there. The movie follows all perspectives plus that of a retired private detective helping out and bafflingly, a truck driver, which doesn't become apparent until later why (and it's still very unnecessary). Not a fan of this technique of storytelling as it invites unnecessary insights and boring repetition. Looking For Grace is no exception.

The Daughter is a contemporary retelling of Ibsen's The Wild Duck (this is the second Australian adaptation of this play, the first was in 1983 featuring the very Australian actors Jeremy Irons and Liv Ullmann...) where the owner of the local timber mill Henry (Geoffrey Rush) is marrying his much younger housekeeper Anna (Anna Torv) and his absent, now living in America son Christian (American actor Paul Schneider) has come back for the wedding. He meets up with his old friend Oliver (Ewen Leslie), who is married to the old man's former housekeeper now a teacher Charlotte (Miranda Otto) and they have a daughter Hedvig (Odessa Young) and Oliver's father Walter (Sam Neill) lives with them. But Christian is extremely reluctant to be there and is using it to get back with his ex-girlfriend, but when she doesn't come, he begins drinking heavily which expands to the wedding where Christian decides to reveal a secret that affects both families and will tear them apart and end in tragedy. Pretty decent adaptation with routinely great performances, but it's a very devastating story,

Is This The Real World (with no question mark, come on...) is a drama about gifted but troubled Mark (Sean Keenan), who is starting at a new school after being expelled from his last school and is read the riot act by the vice principal Mr. Rickard (Greg Stone) on his first day. But, it doesn't take long before he gets into trouble. This isn't helped by his home life with his brother going to jail and his ailing grandmother close to dying, although his mother (Susie Porter) does her best to keep the family together with the absence of their patriarch. Mark is given a lengthy detention and forced to do it under the watch of the vice principal. Mark catches the eye of Kim (Charlotte Best), but she turns out to be the vice principal's daughter, further complicating their tense relationship. Mark and Kim become closer and Mark decides to take her on a trip, which brings everything to the boil. Average movie, nothing special and basically going over well-worn territory and not helped by a bombastic ending which goes for something big, which isn't necessary, but ends up going too far and feels poorly conceived. Plus I'm not sure about the Mark character. He's said to be gifted, but there's practically no evidence of this and he makes plenty of dumb decisions along the way. Hmm...

Scare Campaign is a horror thriller about the people behind a scary prank TV show called Scare Campaign where they set up people in supernatural scenarios. But the head of the network (Sigrid Thornton) wants something more realistic and uses a violent online show as an example. The producer Marcus (Ian Meadows), is up to the challenge even though he's perfectly happy with what they were doing and manages to talk his lead actress/lover Emma (Meegan Warner) into one more show even though she is sick of it. They are joined by exuberant newcomer Abby (Olivia DeJonge) for the final show of the season where they are going to scare the former worker of a mental institution Rohan (Josh Quong Tart). Everything is going fine and the twist in the show is falling into place but then members of the show begin to be killed for real by what looks like member of the online show they were shown. So, is it real and if it is, who will survive? Very good horror movie, not so much with the scares, but with the intriguing premise which plays out. Made by a couple of brothers whose first movie, 100 Bloody Acres, is also fairly good, so it looks like there's a decent horror team in the making here.

Me and My Mates vs. The Zombie Apocalypse is a Canberra set zombie comedy that takes place at a telephony exchange where a bunch of telecom tradesman gather to hole up against the coming zombie apocalypse. Stars a bunch of comedians (Jim Jefferies, Greg Fleet, Alex Williamson, Adele Vuko) and there's not much to the plot, so it obviously goes for laughs and it has a few, but it doesn't feel as funny as it should be considering what it's going for.

Finally got a hold of the Blurays for both Now Add Honey and Mad Max: Fury Road and found a few things to cap, a bloopers scenes and the full salacious music video that is played in bit and pieces from Now Add Honey. Also there's a deleted scene from Mad Max: Fury Road where Debra Ades flashes a breast. I remember seeing her credited for the movie, but couldn't find her, so this was a nice surprise.

Update for 21 July...

Bridgend is a drama where Sara (Hannah Murray) moves with her policeman father (Steven Waddington) back to a small Welsh town where they had previously lived. Now a teenager at high school, she befriends some disaffected peers who like to go down to the river to drink, swim naked and have sex. On her way back with the group, they stop to honour one of their friends who committed suicide recently. Sara is invited to a party with the group and befriends Thomas, who takes her back to his house and in a moment of intimacy begins to choke Sara. He finally relents, but Sara doesn't seem to mind what happened. The next day, Sara is alerted by Jamie (Josh O'Connor) that Thomas killed himself. Over time, Sara and Jamie become close against her father's wishes and the group begins to be filled with tension because of what seems to be Jamie's involvement in Thomas's death. The group begins to act out against the town, but is brought back to Earth when another suicide occurs. As Sara becomes closer to Jamie, the group become more and more terse with Jamie and with all this tension, something is going to break. A decidedly underwhelming movie based on a true story that never digs deep into the motivation behind the teenagers killing themselves, although I get the sense that this may be the same for the true life happenings. The suicides are unexplained and happen out of nowhere, while they feel more like random murders committed by unknown assailants. And because of this, the film doesn't feel all that mysterious or seem to look to find a way to break the cycle. There constantly feels like we're missing something that we should know and that doesn't help the ending which should be profound but feels inexplicably uninteresting. Bridgend is a disappointingly deflating movie...

Update for 20 July...

Road Games is a thriller set in the French countryside where Englishman Jack (Andrew Simpson) is hitchhiking along a notorious stretch of road where a serial killer is said to be at work. Having no luck getting anyone to pull over for him, he eventually comes across a couple fighting in a car, in which Véronique (Joséphine de La Baume) gets out and leaves the car before it drives off. After spending the night sleeping the in scrub, the next day, Jack and Véronique finally catch a break when a local Grizard (Frédéric Pierrot) pulls over and picks them up although Véronique is none too happy about this. Grizard tells Jack that there is a strike on and the ferries back to England have all stopped and offers to set he and Véronique up for the night. Grizard introduces them to his American artist wife Mary (Barbara Crampton), who seems unsettled about something, but they have dinner although they have to improvise as Jack is a vegetarian. Later that night, Véronique sleeps with Jack, but in the morning, she is gone and Grizard hastily tries to get Jack to leave despite the ferry strike. Jack is then hit over the head and tied up by a local road kill collector (Féodor Atkine) and forced to eat meat and then bundled up in his truck from which Jack escapes back to Grizard's house where he finds Véronique tied up. He helps her escape, but Grizard, Mary and the road kill collector are close behind, but maybe they aren't the real problem... Frustrating but enticing thriller that maybe puts too many eggs in the basket and ends up with a tangled plot that doesn't really work. The addition of the road kill collector is too confusing and doesn't seem to add much except a red herring and to the running time. I think the best that can be said is that it's an almost movie. And I like Joséphine de La Baume from stuff like Kiss of the Damned and Listen Up Philip, so I wasn't going to miss this movie.

Update for 18 July...

High-Rise is a drama apparently set in the 1970s where a doctor, Laing (Tom Hiddleston), moves into a high-rise apartment complex with a very rigid social structure, to which he starts at the bottom. He moves in above Charlotte (Sienna Miller) and her son and she immediately takes a liking to him and they begin an affair. She also seems to know everyone in the complex. Soon Laing meets the other tenants like documentary filmmaker Wilder (Luke Evans) and his pregnant wife Helen (Elisabeth Moss), well-known and very vain actress Jane (Sienna Guillory) and the owners of the building who live on the top floor, Royal (Jeremy Irons) and his wife Ann (Keeley Hawes). Things seems, well fine in the complex although nobody seems to remember where they parked in the confusing car park and Royal and his underlings are setting certain restrictions on the place. After a children's party gets wildly out of hand, Royal through his underlings shut off everything in the building and well, everything goes to shit very quickly. Not in the least from Laing, who becomes obsessed with finding the perfect colour to paint his apartment. Not only does the power and water go, but the supermarket in the building runs out of supplies and everyone reverts to their base instincts to survive. If only they could leave the complex... Very out there movie that is one part fascinating, one part frustrating, but it intrigued me to the end. Plus I do love a society falling apart story, so High-Rise is well worth watching for that reason alone and I also liked the director's previous movies Kill List and Sightseers. But a number of things are not explained all that well, so I kept wondering why nobody could just leave when they seem to be able to before. Also, people seemed to exist well enough without food and water. One strange movie...

Update for 8 July...

Cherry Tree is an Irish horror movie where 15 year-old Faith (Naomi Battrick) is struggling to cope with her father Sean (Sam Hazeldine) suffering the debilitating effects of cancer and has less than 3 months to live. She's not fairing much better at school, bullied by the more popular girl and then the new hockey coach Sissy (Anna Walton) arrives and takes her under her wing. Turns out Sissy is a witch and makes an offer to Faith that she save her father, but in return, she wants Faith to give birth to a child for her. Faith, who has never had sex, is baffled by the offer, but she desperately wants her father to live, so on her 16th birthday, she has sex with an older boy who likes her, Brian (Patrick Gibson). Well, Faith falls pregnant and Sissy cures her father as promised. The baby is growing quicker than usual and during that time, Faith finds out that Sissy wants the child to sacrifice for her greater ambitions, so Faith decides to she will hide from Sissy and her coven and save her child, but Sissy's coven is far-reaching and she will stop at nothing to enacts her dastardly plans. Surprisingly nasty horror movie that is not a bad little movie. Good performances from Battrick and Walton steer the movie quite well, even when it gets a bit silly, but overall, I enjoyed Cherry Tree.

Also, there's some videos of Kristen Stewart from the sci-fi romantic drama Equals, an OK movie, but to be honest, I'm not really a fan of these dour dramas about breaking free in dystopic futures that seem to a thing at the moment.

Update for 6 July...

Manhattan Undying is a drama about young artist Max (Luke Grimes), whose manager Andrew (Milton Barnes), is desperate for him to paint a new work entitled Manhattan Undying,, but Max has a waning interest, even less so when he finds out he's dying from lung cancer. Meanwhile a vampire, Vivian (Sarah Roemer), is working her way through the men of Manhattan, having sex with them and then draining them of their blood. But all she really wants is to see what she really looks like and when she spots one of Max's paintings at a nightclub, she decides that she wants Max to paint her, which is convenient for Max as he is struggling for a subject for his new painting. So after some to and fro between the two, Max finally decides to paint Vivian. Also, the police are looking for Vivian whose trail of bodies is increasing. Lacklustre movie with an interesting idea but that's about it. Both leads are incredibly underwritten, particularly Vivian who is very boring and Sarah Roemer isn't given much more to do than pout. Very disappointing and no real surprise this movie has being sitting on the shelf for 3 years before getting a digital release in the UK. If only Sarah had shown more, I might not be stewing about the trouble I went through and cost (even after the UK economy collapsed!) to get this bloody movie.

Update for 4 July...

Today's update features the horror anthology Holidays featuring stories based around various days of notice throughout the year like Valentine's Day, Mother's and Father's Day, St. Patrick's Day etc. Made by a group of directors who have made a horror movie and also Kevin Smith, who increasing hatefulness is showing no signs of stopping. As with pretty much all anthology movies, they are very hit and miss, mostly miss and Holidays is mostly miss. The best are probably Mother's Day, Father's Day and maybe St. Patrick's Day.

Redux Friday for 1 July...

Collage and videos from Powder Blue are available here.

That time of the week again with today's update featuring Powder Blue with Jessica Biel's only on-screen nudity (although she comes close in London). Well, going by my review from 2009, I hated this movie and I gotta tell you, being a movie in one of my least favourite genres, Powder Blue hasn't gotten better with age. It's every bit as pretentious as I said it was, but strangely I thought it ended OK. I don't agree with that, in fact I think the ending to this movie is absolutely the worst. Some of it is spent in the afterlife (yes, really), Ray Liotta's death is an all-time shocker and Eddie Redmayne getting Jessica Biel. Oh, fuck off... enjoy the redux.
