Update for 31 December...

One last update for the year and it's a new release!

The Crucifixion is a thriller where young journalist and religious skeptic Nicole (Sophie Cookson) hears of the death of a young woman in Romania after being crucified during a exorcism and convinces her editor to let her investigate. Nicole is finding it hard to get anywhere until she meets local priest Father Anton (Corneliu Ulici) who attempts to explain to her how things may have happened. Nicole starts to see strange things happening around her and a local mute is following her. She starts to get to the bottom of the what happened to Adelina (Ada Lupu) when she talks to her sister Vaduva (Brittany Ashworth), but the closer she gets to the truth, the closer the demon gets to her. OK exorcism thriller/mystery that fairly predictable and has a rather limp ending. Then again, exorcism thrillers are all pretty much the same, so I don't know what else I'm expecting. Really only watched it because I liked Sophie in the Naomi Watts Netflix drama Gypsy.

Update for 24 December...

Some quick videos and caps from 4 newly released Australian movies I've just watched.

Quick synopses: Ambrosia is a drama about a group of arty friends on holiday where they meet a mysterious local who will affect their lives. Not a lot going on in this movie, mostly narration and ruminations, but not completely boring.

Crime and Punishment is an adaptation of Dostoevsky's book set in modern Melbourne (mostly at University of Melbourne campus) where a desperate professor cum student murders a dealer and his girlfriend and deals with the guilt of attempting to get away with the crime while a persistent detective and his mentor attempt to rattle him. Not a bad adaptation although I have to say I've never read the book and my only reference point is the movie Crime and Punishment in Suburbia...

Red Curtain Hell is a comedy set during an one-night only production of Hamlet that goes horribly wrong and ends in a similar way to the actual play (so, if you don't know, everyone pretty much dies in the end of Hamlet, hint hint). Some laughs, but largely forgettable.

That's Not Me is a comedy about a struggling actress (Alice Foulcher) who has a more famous twin sister and is constantly living in her shadow when she's not being mistaken for her. Fairly decent comedy with most of laughs coming from the whole mistaken identity thing but also surprisingly some good laughs from a cameo by Isabel Lucas as a troublesome Hollywood actress. Funnier than I thought it would be.

Update for 17 December...

Back to the bottomless pile and here's a couple of movies from a couple of years ago. Sex Tape is a strangely out-of-touch movie (I mean, the title alone) about a couple who spice up their marriage by filming themselves having sex but then they accidentally send it to all their friends but not by actually sending it to them accidentally, but by giving all their friends an iPad which have all synced to their own iPad, not a cumbersome plot point at all. This might have been negated if it was actually funny, but it really isn't. Antiviral is a strange movie about a man who bootlegs diseases from celebrities which he smuggles from where he works by infecting himself and then sells to obsessed fans for their own delectation. But, then things get very weird when he becomes a target of super-obsessed fans of one such celebrity, who dies in mysterious circumstances and it's a race against time to find out what is killing him and what killed the celebrity before he is killed himself. Hard to explain succinctly because it's such a batty but oddly intriguing movie from the son of David Cronenberg. Doesn't always explain it's ideas, but never less than intriguing.

Update for 15 December...

Enough with the reduxes for a day, here's 3 quick series from new release movies with some brief nudity in each movie. Some quick synopses: Mother! is a, well intense drama about a woman (Jennifer Lawrence) whose life unravels around her as her older writer husband (Javier Bardem) fails to see this happening. Fascinating but completely batshit movie, I ended up quite liking it, but it's definitely not for everyone. Detroit is a fairly decent recreation of the murder of three black men by police officers in the middle of the Detroit riots in the late 60s. Dark, devastating stuff and pretty well made movie. Stronger is a drama about a man (Jake Gyllenhaal) who loses his legs in the Boston terrorist attack and slowly attempts to get his life back. Tatiana Maslany plays his girlfriend who helps him. Not bad, but a fairly stock-standard rising against the odds movie.

Update for 7 December...

A couple of new movies, one Australian and another featuring an Australian actress.

What If It Works? is a romantic comedy about Adrian (Luke Ford), a tech whiz and fast driving enthusiast who suffers from OCD and does not like to be touched. One day, he meets Grace (Anna Samson), an artist who has multiple personality disorder, when she mistakes him for her new psychiatrist. Adrian also finds out that Grace is his new neighbour and one day he follows Grace to her artist's collective run by her boyfriend Sledgehammer (Wade Briggs) and begins to talk to her, but she is her tough girl personality G. Adrian has just come off a relationship with Melinda (Brooke Satchwell) that ended badly, but she's still interested in him despite being with another man. Adrian and Grace hit it off, but their mental issues are a hindrance to anything more or maybe it's the key to them actually getting together. OK movie with two charming enough leads (good to see Anna Samson in a lead role, she was quite good in the recent Wake In Fright mini-series), but the movie never really elevates itself to being above just OK. Reminds me a lot of the similar inner city Melbourne based movie Malcolm, well without the ingenuous robbery.

Update for 5 December...

Atomic Blonde is a spy thriller set as the Berlin Wall is about to come down, where a bruised and beaten British spy Lorraine Broughton (Charlize Theron) is called to explain what happened during her trip to her boss (Toby Jones) and a high-level CIA agent (John Goodman). 10 days earlier, Lorraine is sent to Germany to find out who assassinated a British agent (and Lorraine's secret lover) who had a list of British agents disguised in a watch and Lorraine is also to retrieve that watch. Also, an East German man codenamed Spyglass (Eddie Marsan) has memorised the entire list, but wants sanctuary in Britain which Lorraine is to also organise. She is met in Germany by their man there, David Percival (James McAvoy), who seems to know everything and everyone in Berlin, which will become a help and a hindrance to Lorraine as he seems to be playing both sides for personal gain. With Russian interests in the list, Lorraine has a hell of a time getting her job done, but along the way she finds time to have an affair with an out-of-her-depth French agent Delphine (Sofia Boutella). Pretty decent action thriller and a great showcase for Charlize Theron's star qualities. While the plot meanders all over the place with more plot twists by the minute, the action scenes are actually pretty decent, particularly the lengthy scene where Lorraine tries to get a dying Spyglass out of the country while half of the KGB seems to be after them. Hardly surprising that one of people behind John Wick directed Atomic Blonde, the action has a very similar feel to it.

Como La Espuma (Like Foam) is a Spanish romantic comedy set in the middle of an orgy, so the old finding love in the middle of sex plot. Sadly nothing to cap from Sara Sálamo who I liked in the movie Tres60 and there's a lot of background sex and nudity going on, but not much from the main characters. Too hard to cap the background stuff, plus only the main cast is in the credits, everyone else is considered an extra, so good luck trying to work out who's who...
