Update for 30 April...

Another update featuring South African movies, this time I've gone back a bit and got some on DVD because I can't help myself. Stander is a thriller with international backing hence why it starts Thomas Jane, Deborah Kara Unger and British actor Dexter Fletcher but is about an infamous South African cop turned robber and is mostly filmed in South Africa. Saw the movie back when it was first released and it's an OK movie. Strangely, the 2008 South African movie Lullaby is directed by the same guy who directed the 2017 South African movie The Lullaby, not confusing in the slightest. Citizen Verdict is technically not a South African movie but was made in South Africa with Armand Assante, Roy Schneider in one of his last movies and strangely Jerry Springer in a role where he basically plays himself plus gets to bed women. One of them is Dorette Potgieter, who has one of the bigger women roles in the movie. She also got naked in a movie called Africa which I should check out although it seems to have not been released in Australia.

Update for 29 April...

Because I can't help myself, I have over 100 Spanish movies on DVD I've planned to watch/cap and all I'm doing is adding to the list but once a year I dig into it, cap a few then forget about for another year. Here we go again...

Today's update is all about Spanish actress Leonor Watling as I was looking around and found a bunch of movies featuring her that I hadn't capped were finally available on DVD. Some good nudity from Leonor in two of the movies but the third movie, En La Ciudad, heavily promotes her appearance in the movie but she's barely in it, basically blink and you'll miss her. There's is some nudity from María Pujalte in that movie, who was also naked in Insomnio which was an early movie I finally recapped last year. Sadly, Leonor has only being on Spanish TV in the last few years, would like to see her in movies again even in English language movies like her last one Muse, although there was nothing to cap from her in that one.

I've capped pretty much everything Leonor's being in now or so I thought when I realised I haven't recapped the movie with her best nudity, Son De Mar, which I did cap on the old site but haven't upgraded it. Was probably hoping it would turn up in HD/Bluray as other Bigas Luna movies have recently but no, it doesn't look like. Going to have to see if I have a copy now.

Update for 27 April...

Back into the 90s DVD collection and what was more 90s than a wacky indie comedy with unwieldy ironic name. First up is There's No Fish Food In Heaven also known as Life In The Fast Lane, a wacky indie comedy starring Fairuza Balk as an artist who wants to change her life and gets a chance when she is saved from being hit by a falling statue by a mystery man (Patrick Dempsey) and dumps her boyfriend (Noah Taylor in one his first roles outside of Australian stuff) who decides to win her back by mailing himself to her but she accidentally stabs him in the head with scissors while opening the box, killing him but not his spirit who follows her around as she attempts to find herself and the mystery man. Extremely wacky and very much a 90s black comedy that is very much what you expect it would be. Never heard of it before but apparently I got it back in 2018 from the Australian DVD release which I don't remember at all. Weird...

The Size Of Watermelons is another wacky comedy about a loser art student (Paul Rudd) who bumbles his way into some friends and a girlfriend and then decides to make a very alternative movie which becomes the bane of his existence. Odd movie, Rudd is well cast, Donal Logue plays a Donal Logue character, Ione Skye turns up and plays an Ione Skye character and then her father turns up with a bunch of other cameos including bafflingly Adam West. Just like the previous movie, it's very 90s indie but not without it's charm.

Update for 26 April...

90s update time and today's finally got around to capping movie is Wax Mask, an Italian horror movie initially started by Lucio Fulci with Dario Argento before Fulci died but then passed along to others. It's not without it's charm despite being more than a bit chintzy and feels like it was made in the 70s not in the mid-90s. An absolutely terrible English dubbing doesn't help, even better when some moments are in the original Italian, hahaha. It definitely helps that it has a fair bit of nudity, particularly from lead actress Romina Mondello, who looks mighty fine. If you're into Italian horror Wax Mask is worth a look but otherwise I wouldn't bother.

Update for 25 April...

It's redux time and 3 HD upgrades today including one featuring on the site for the first time. Sigh... It seems the uncut version of Boot Camp will never be available in HD let alone a version without the blurring over Mila Kunis' breasts. A new HD version of Boot Camp became available recently and of course it's the same as the old one, heavy edits and zooming in during the 'nude' scene. So, I've had to bust out the 'Uncut' DVD and capped it from that. I've also made some DVD caps from the missing scene. I've sat on it for 3 years waiting for the uncut version to become available and I think this is definitive proof that it'll never happen and that Amazon will always have the cut versions of movies on it's streaming platform. Anyone know how to get in contact with the Amazon masters to tell them this constant discrepancy. It's totally a matter of laziness more than a genuine attempt at censorship.

Ah, bringing up the big issues in these troubling times...

Also a special thanks for Fisher Stevens and co. for all that scribbling over the Idina Menzel sex/nude scene and all over Just A Kiss. I see you crawling up the stairs in that Marisa Tomei scene below...

Update for 20 April...

Back into the 90s DVD collection and first up is Mute Witness, a pretty decent British thriller set in Russia where a mute (Marina Zudina) walks in on a snuff movie being filmed and then it's a fight for her life against gangsters, corrupt cops and Alec Guinness turning up for a couple of scenes filmed 10 years before the film was made. I remember this movie got a small cinema release in Australia but I think I was too young to go see it as it was R 18+ rated although on rewatch the movie isn't all that violent and most of the violence is implied. Not saying it isn't a violent movie, it is pretty intense from about half way through but I dispute the high rating. Anyway, I saw it on video back in the day and remember liking it but haven't seen it again until now and holds up pretty well. Not without a silly moment or two but it has two long tense sections which more than make up for it. Zudina is still acting in Russian stuff while British actress Fay Ripley in her debut plays her sister and is now a fairly prominent actress in Britain. Definitely worth a look if you're interested.

Shaded Places seems to be called different things in each country it was released and is a fairly annoying movie where Christina Applegate invites everyone to a country house and then turns up and hangs herself on a swing and everyone tries to work out why for the rest of the movie. Spoiler: something about a highly unlikely rape that everyone had seemed to forget including those involved in it. A terrible movie comes in terrible quality, one of the worst DVD releases I've ever seen but I doubt there's much call for this movie. It does have that total loss from Species 2 that never acted again, so there's something to be thankful for.

Chiara Caselli is an Italian actress who had a habit of turning up in English language movies throughout the 90s and early 2000s like My Own Private Idaho, Ripley's Game and a movie that really needs a HD release, Beyond Clouds, so much good nudity in that movie including from Chiara. Never heard of The Vivero Letter and it turns out that it's a B-action adventure movie about the search for a lost city full of gold. Robert Patrick and Fred Ward are the only other actors in the movie worth a damn and it's very much B-grade all the way. Chiara has a couple of nude scenes, one I'm sure would be trimmed out in widescreen so it's good to have the fullscreen DVD.

Update for 19 April...

90s weekend time, this week's movie I finally got around to capping is The Comfort Of Strangers, a decent slow burn drama about a British couple who meet an odd but friendly couple while on holiday in Venice and it becomes clear that the couple are strangely attracted to the British couple in a way that is going to end very badly for them. Saw this movie on TV back in the 90s and this is my first time seeing it since and it holds up very well, Christopher Walken is particularly good and subtly nasty.

The Journey: Absolution is a big load of nothing, a sci-fi movie that is barely sci-fi more musclebound military types throwing their weight around for 90 minutes of boredom. And being directed by David DeCoteau, it might be terrible, but you know that there's going to be a lot of pretty young buff things in not much clothing, usually men but Jaime Pressly turns up and has a lengthy and strangely boring sex scene with Mario Lopez. There's good nudity from Jaime in the scene but honestly, Poison Ivy 3: The New Seduction is a far more watchable with sexier stuff from Jaime throughout. Also that title is absolutely terrible, ridiculously cumbersome and makes no sense in regards to the movie.

Never seen Strangeland before but I used to always see it at the video shop back in the day but I was never in the mood. Very much a Dee Snider vehicle and surprisingly his only movie that he wrote/directed (he didn't direct it but his fingerprints are all over it), this is an early torture porn movie using extreme piercing as it's mode of torture and is competent even if it has a fairly silly plot. Early role for Linda Cardellini who spends most of her screen time strategically naked and with her mouth sewn shut but she would go onto far better things than this. Kevin Gage plays a character named Gage which is helpful and Elizabeth Peña is barely in the movie despite playing the wife/mother while Amy Smart turns up briefly as a friend of Linda's character who knows about chatrooms. I think I capped this from the slightly cut version of the movie which wouldn't be a surprise as Amazon rips are always the cut/R-rated version of the movie, never the uncut version but I've checked to see what was actually cut and it's mostly a matter of frames in a couple of the nude scenes and most of the cuts are from the piercing scenes. I should check out the DVD to see if it's the uncut version.

Update for 13 April...

Time to dive into the 90s DVD collection. Baja and Amnesia are written and directed by the same bloke and both are fairly ordinary films with a similar odd tone and moments of genuine strangeness. Baja is a mostly boring couple on the run from a drug deal gone wrong movie that has one reason to watch it and that's for Lance Henriksen's arsehole hitman who seems to be in a different movie but is loving it nonetheless. Interesting that Molly Ringwald has a sex scene in this movie and is clearly wearing a patch on her breast but in the same year's Malicious, she does a nude scene in a similar scene. Wonder what changed her mind... Amnesia is a strange, wacky noir thriller basing its plot on the tiresome amnesia device and a bunch of truly oddball performances. Sally Kirkland is always nutty and she excels herself in that department but hang on, John Savage makes a late run as a shonky insurance agent, clearly bored with his role so he adds some genuine oddness to his straightforward role, especially the baffling rape scene where we doesn't even seem to open his pants. The male lead is a dead loss, Ally Sheedy is not much better and the only one trying seems to be Dara Tomanovich but this is clearly not the movie to be good in.

It seems I attempted to cap some of these movies a couple of years ago, in this case Six Ways To Sunday and New Blood, so they made for light work but I don't remember anything about either movie especially New Blood, no idea what that is even about. The List is a Canadian political thriller where a bunch of fat guys get to have sex with Mädchen Amick and then she blackmails them. Very odd seeing fat guys having sex/nude scenes when 99% of the time it's buff guys or skinny rakes.

Added 13/12/2020 - Didn't watch New Blood when I capped it off DVD but have now watched it and it's a typical 90s violent crime thriller which strangely has John Hurt in the cast adding unnecessary gravitas to a pretty standard movie. From the strange period where everyone from Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels got cast in lead roles so here we get Nick Moran adding not much. There's Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantoliano (in a ridiculous wig) just before The Matrix with Carrie-Anne in a pretty much throwaway role. The plot is so convoluted that it plays out one way, a character makes up a back story to trick another character and it turns out that the trick story is actually the real story. And how John Hurt's character gets involved in the plot is too ridiculous to even contemplate. Someone had a lot of fun writing it, I wonder if they stopped for a second to wonder if it made a jot of sense...

Update for 12 April...

90s weekend once more. Have a bunch of 90s movies that have been sitting around for years that I just put in the too much work basket, so it's time to get around to capping them and I'm trying to do one a week. Last week it was Tromeo And Juliet, today's entry is The Devil's Advocate, which turned out to be not as much as I remember. Haven't seen it since it's initial release and I forgot about the 'it was all just a dream' ending, can't believe that hokey device got a run in this movie or any movie in the last 30 years. Second baffling thing is the amount of morphing that goes on in this movie, making the Michael Jackson 'Black And White' music video look revolutionary and it's use in the ending is so bad (from of all people, special effects maestro Rick Baker). Both Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron are out of their depth here, not for want of trying but they would both become better actors in time, particularly Charlize. Hard to believe she was 21 when making this movie, she always played older than she was while most other 21 year-olds are still playing high school kids. Geez, The Devil's Advocate as aged incredibly badly, at least it has a fairly decent amount of nudity in it. Always thought that Tamara Tunie scene was kinda unsung, it's a great scene and she looks great, well that is the point of that scene.

I can't get over that ending, fuck it's bad...

Update for 6 April...

More 90s movies, all B-grade stuff today. The Shooter is a pretty rubbish western where a former hero is forced into defending the people of a town he was passing through after killing the son of a local crimelord. Scarred City is an OK cop thriller where a trigger happy cop is recruited into an elite squad of cops that shoot first and don't bother asking any questions later but they seem more like murderers than cops, so the trigger happy cop gets a conscience when a prostitute (Tia Carrere) gets caught up in one of their massacres. Every Breath is a batshit crazy thriller where a bored rich couple hire a broke actor to spice up their marriage but it soon turns out that this was a bad decision and that the husband is just a psychopath getting his thrills seeing others suffer including a penchant for burying people alive and watching them die. I was ready to dismiss this movie after the first 20-30 minutes of mostly uninteresting stuff but the movie's tone is truly nutty and the comedy is so incredibly dark that it almost saves itself. Definitely went to areas that were completely unexpected after the poor opening act. Almost...

Update for 5 April...

90s weekend and it's over to Troma. Not really a fan of Troma movies generally and hadn't seen Tromeo And Juliet but had heard a bit about it. Unsurprisingly, it's more than a bit erratic with wild changes in tone and a lot of bad jokes but that's not to say that it isn't highly watchable and has some decent gags. The two leads are alright, about what you expect in a Troma movie and Jane Jensen sure is pretty. Only knew her from her music and she's not a great actress but in a trashy movie like this, it doesn't matter, she does her job.

Capped this from the extended edition of the movie and I think the only extra scene is the second Antonia Lurie video as the extra scenes had a noticable drop quality.

Another South African update. A couple featuring Queen Sono star Pearl Thusi including another installment in the Mummy/Scorpion King series of movies, filmed in South Africa. Gotta hand it to Universal, they sure know how to milk their movies even after they are bone dry, so many unnecessary straight-to-DVD/streaming sequels. They are the masters of it, that's for sure.

I think that's all the South African movies I have for the moment but I'll keep an eye out for more in the future. I'm sure there's a few I've missed along the way as well.

Update for 1 April...

Locusts is a thriller where Ryan (Ben Geurens) goes back to his home town of Serenity Crossing for the funeral of his father who he hasn't seen in years but he would rather keep a low profile plus he is expecting an important phone call that will make him rich. Try as he might, Ryan cannot avoid his past and he comes across local hotheads Benny (Justin Rosniak), Cain (Steve Le Marquand), Davo (Damian Hill) and Caleb (Ryan Morgan) who invite him to have a beer with them. He finally catches up with his long-lost brother Tyson (Nathaniel Dean) getting beaten up and he has a drink with him but it goes as badly as expected. He meets old family friend Jake (Andy McPhee) who offers him a place to stay but he politely declines. Ryan finds out that his father has left his brothers with nothing after mysteriously mortgaging his home in the week before he died but he did leave his most prized possession, his classic car, which he gives to Tyson. After reminiscing and getting drunk with his brother, Ryan drives back to the city only to be run off the road by the local hotheads and he's without a spare tyre. They drive back to town and have a beer at the strip club where they drop the bombshell that his father owed them $100,000 and they want him to pay up and have kidnapped Tyson as collateral. But Ryan's not rich yet and the local cop (Peter Phelps) turns a blind eye to his plea.

At the strip club, he comes across old friend Izzy (Jessica McNamee), now a working as a stripper and he tells her that he's being blackmailed and she decides to help him with a plan that involves robbing the strip club. He doesn't want to do that and attempts to reason with the hotheads and their wheelchair bound boss McCrea (Alan Dukes), but they only want the money and send him on his way with a few more bruises. Ryan finds out that Izzy has a sick daughter who is just another of the town that is dying and Izzy wants the money for her medical treatment. With the help of Jake, who looks after the local mining concern that may be killing the town, Ryan robs the strip club safe but he doesn't have the key to open the safe but he lucks out when Izzy's diversion of giving the strip club owner (Kenneth Moraleda) a powerful laxative causes him to die on the toilet. Ryan gets away but the strip club owner isn't dead and wants his money back but just as he gets his money back, the strip club owner gets hit by a passing truck. Ryan goes to pay the $100,000 but McCrea knows that he robbed the strip club and who else was involved and they want all the money. When they get to the hiding place, the money is gone and the hotheads decide to kill Ryan and Tyson but they fight back, killing Benny and Davo but as they leave, someone shoots Tyson dead with a sniper rifle and goes after Ryan but he escapes. He goes back to kill the McCrea and the rest of the hotheads but something isn't right and Ryan is going to need a miracle to get out of this nightmare.

OK thriller but nothing you haven't seen before from Australian thrillers set in the middle of nowhere with uninviting locals. The film is mostly watchable because the plot never stops moving along not even to take a breath as another revelation comes to light. The thing that stops Locusts from being a better movie is that the movie is so predictable as it's been done time and time again, particularly in Australia film, that just providing another rehash of this means that it doesn't stand out and doesn't try for something more. It is just an OK, heavy plot driven thriller.
