Update for 26 February...

The Secret Society, the fourth and (so far) final Poison Ivy movie is a 2008 release of dubious relation to the Poison Ivy series where country girl Daisy (Miriam McDonald) gets a part-scholarship to an exclusive college where a mysterious murder of a young woman has just occurred. Daisy immediately makes an impact with Blake (Ryan Kennedy), who begins dating her and his professor father Andrew (Greg Evigan). Meanwhile, a secret society of young women called the Ivies (talk about tenuous links) headed by the highly manipulative Azalea (Shawna Waldron) are looking for new members and immediately dismiss Daisy as a hayseed until Blake mentions that Daisy is up for an exclusive internship that Azalea is desperate to get. So to keep Daisy under her thumb, she taps her to join the Ivies which Daisy reluctantly agrees. All of a sudden the problems that Daisy had such as being unable to pay college disappear but this comes at a price which becomes even greater when Azalea doesn't get what she wants and will do anything to get what she wants including sleeping with just about anyone and even a little murder. Piss poor addition to the Poison Ivy series that is clearly reaching for anything that will get people to watch this movie. Apparently it was a made-for-cable TV movie that added a bunch of nude scenes for the DVD release, which let's face it, is the only reason to watch this movie as the plot is ridiculous. And there is some good nudity in this movie but having said that the sex scenes look silly with no-one showing any bottom half nudity (even the men). Cover up with a blanket or something to at least make it less like dry humping...

Surely the franchise this movie was much closer to is The Skulls which was already up to 3 by this movie's release. Sure, there isn't a lot of sex and nudity in the series like the Poison Ivy series, but it would definitely make more sense than this marriage.

OK, I'm going to rank the movies in order of quality of the movie and the nudity in them:
Quality - 2, 1, 3, 4
Nudity - 3, 4, 2, 1

Just a quick note: I've had an earlier version of the Poison Ivy 4 Bluray laying around waiting for me to cap but I never got around to it until now. The quality of the new release isn't of a high quality, there's a little bit of interlacing which I couldn't fix but it isn't that bad. I looked at the older release and it's exactly the same even at a lower bitrate, so that didn't help. According to the time stamps of the older version, it was made in 2008 which would be an early Bluray release and would explain the format it was in (I won't bore you with the details, I've already bored you enough). I doubt we'll ever see a better release but we can always hope...

Update for 25 February...

The third Poison Ivy movie, subtitled The New Seduction, was released straight-to-video in 1997 and is a far more straightforward erotic thriller and follows the plot of the first movie more closely than the second movie. I hadn't seen this movie before except for some caps and videos, but it was still a bit of surprise at how much sex and nudity is in this movie.

Anyway as children, Violet and her sister Ivy lived with their mother who was the live-in maid at the house owned by Ivan (Michael Des Barres) who lived with his ailing wife and his daughter Joy who is the same age as Violet. Ivan catches the maid having sex with a bloke (that wasn't him) and kicks them out of the house. A few years later a now grown-up Violet (Jaime Pressly) comes to stay with Joy (Megan Edwards) at their house and she is welcomed there. But like her sister Ivy, there's something off with Violet and she starts to manipulate the household, seducing Joy's boyfriend Michael (Greg Vaughan) and then Ivan and just generally pissing off the maid before setting her sights on destroying perfectionist Joy. Well, we know how that ends. Pretty much a straight B-grade erotic thriller with a fairly ridiculous way of shoehorning in the Poison Ivy lore as it turns out both Ivy and her sister are devious stalkers. It mostly follows the structure of the first movie with some added stalking plus a helluva lot more sex and nudity and a feeble attempt at being slightly humourous. Jaime Pressly is pretty well cast as the seductress, I mean she is incredibly hot and naked in this movie, all-time stuff, but she also is a fairly good actress and is head and shoulders above everyone else in the movie. Having said that, apart from some impressive nudity, the best in the series by far, The New Seduction is a mostly forgettable movie.

Like the other movies in the series, this movie was released in an R-rated and Unrated version which is absolutely inexplicable considering it went straight-to-video. Who's going down to the video shop and deciding between the uncut version and the one with slightly less sex? No-one, that's who. Anyway, just like the first Poison Ivy movie, the extra footage is stitched into this release in lesser quality, actually worse than the quality of the first movie as this version is a bit interlaced. Sadly, not a lot I could do with it but it's not that distracting thankfully, just occasionally noticable.

One more Poison Ivy movie to go, this time not a 90s movie but made a decade later and well... I'll tell you tomorrow.

Update for 24 February...

The next Poison Ivy movie was the 1996 straight-to-video follow-up subtitled Lily and lets be honest, this movie is just an erotic thriller that has shoehorned in a Poison Ivy reference (that isn't even really related to the first movie) just to get the branding. Otherwise, there's no relation to the first movie except for the stalker plot. Basically, Lily (Alyssa Milano) comes to California from small town Michigan to start at an art school where she struggles to fit in until she finds a diary from a previous resident in her room, "Ivy", who writes about discovering a whole new world by exploring her sexuality. Lily decides to follow the examples in the diary which leads her to fall for sculptor Gredin (Johnathon Schaech) but also catches the attention of her art professor (Xander Berkeley) who pursues her first by getting Lily to be a babysitter to his daughter (a young Camilla Belle) and then getting her to pose for him, well actually just to have sex with her like he has done with other student. This unexpectedly sets off something in the professor who starts to paint for the first time in years but also he becomes hopelessly attracted to Lily which of course, ends badly. Not a bad little movie, probably better and more believable than the original and definitely more sexual and erotic. The movie was made right in the sweet spot of that period where Alyssa Milano played a whole slew of sexual roles in both movies and TV. Xander Berkeley is suitably sleazy (as he usually is) in the stalker role but feels much more fleshed out here than in the original. It's not without some silly moments but for a straight-to-video sequel, Poison Ivy 2 is a pretty solid erotic thriller.

Update for 23 February...

It's the 90s weekend again and this time I'm going to go through the Poison Ivy erotic stalker thriller series, which has been finally released in HD in it's uncut form. This is also the first time I've watched the original and the 3rd and 4th movies and I've only seen 2 and that was over 20 years ago.

Poison Ivy was a series that was very affected by the R-rated/Unrated rating where two versions were released with an Unrated version containing some slightly more erotic scenes. The original was rated R although it is significantly less sexual than the following sequels and yet still added scenes for an Unrated version on home release. Watching it today, it looks like it could almost pass with a PG-13 rating with only brief (male) nudity and the sex scenes are very mild. It should also be noted that the Bluray release has the Unrated scenes stitched back into the movie in lower quality than the rest of the movie, which is strange that there doesn't seem to be a decent uncut release available. Surely there is...

The movie itself is a pretty stock standard stalker thriller which was a fairly popular genre in the 90s (it still is, check out recent VOD releases) with Drew Barrymore playing a teenage girl called 'Ivy', who becomes friends with lonely Sylvie (Sara Gilbert), whose father (played by Tom Skerritt) is an on-air personality at the local TV station and mother (Cheryl Ladd) is sick in bed with emphysema. Over time, 'Ivy' (not really her name, it's the name given to her by Sylvie because of a fake tattoo she has) becomes close with the family to the point where she practically moves in, which is fine until 'Ivy' starts playing up and seduces the father, kills the mother and just generally ruins Sylvie's life. Passable thriller clearly aimed at the teen market as it's pretty tame both with violence and sex but is pretty watchable mainly due to Drew Barrymore who makes a good protagonist as 'Ivy'. Basically the movie is just 'Ivy' and the family with very few superfluous characters but Leonardo DiCaprio is listed in the cast but I can't find him anywhere, seems to have been cut out of the movie completely. Interesting...

(Fixed) Quick note: I had some issues with one of the videos and there's a small glitch in the 4th Drew Barrymore video (the one in the rain), it's very brief but it's there. I'm going to go back and try and fix but I've spent too long doing so without success, so I'll send a note when it's fixed. Anyway, the rest of the Poison Ivy series in the coming days.

Redux for 21 February...

In the mood for more Spanish stuff, so I've dusted off a few Spanish movies from the 90s that I capped back in the day. In the early days, I used to record Spanish movies off SBS onto VHS tape and then capture them with the old TV card, a laborious process but there was barely any digital TV cards back in 2003 and I didn't start on digital TV until late 2004. Thought I'd never get to cap these movies again, but all have been released to DVD and I found copies of them and have finally gotten around to recapping these movies.

Insomnio (also known as Sleepless in Madrid) is a romantic comedy about 3 women dealing with stuff, mostly love. First movie I saw Candela Peña in and she turns up in Spanish movies all the time, my favourite being Torremolinos 73, which bafflingly I haven't capped despite it being on SBS numerous times back in the day. Hadn't seen Entre Las Piernas (Between Your Legs) in a while and didn't remember much about it but saw it recently and holy shit this movie is batshit crazy. It begins with a young girl stabbing her father in the back while he has wild sex with the nanny and it doesn't let up the craziness from there. It's about two sex addicts (played Victoria Abril and Javier Bardem) who fall for one another including having sex in an abandoned car that has a dead body in it. Everyone is so horned up or just plain psychotic that is leads to many ludicrous and insane moments and it's quite strange that a movie as silly as this movie is attracts a pretty decent cast. Lisboa is a pretty straight forward thriller about a disoriented woman (Carmen Maura) who is found by a travelling salesman (Sergi López) and tries to help her escape from her strange family.

Update for 19 February...

Still with the Julio Medem movies with a couple more of his 90s movies, Tierra and Los Amantes del Círculo Polar. Haven't seen either in a while, at least 20 years for Tierra but both are pretty solid movies. Forgot how metaphysical Tierra was, lots of talk of angels and ghosts and quite a few surreal moments usually involving lightning before it turns into a love triangle. Los Amantes del Círculo Polar is a great love story between two people who meet each other by chance and are then forced together when their parents become lovers. Then tragedy strikes and the two drift apart but they are eventually drawn back together by the sheer force of their love.

So, just a couple of Medem movies I haven't yet, Vacas, his first movie which I haven't seen in a while but don't remember there being too much to cap. Can't find a high quality copy at the moment but I have seen it's been released on Bluray somewhere, so I'll keep looking. The other movie is of course Lucía y El Sexo (Sex and Lucia), probably his best known movie and hopefully I will capping it the next little while but there's a lot to cap so it's going to take some time. I should also look into getting a HD copy of Caótica Ana.

Update for 18 February...

A new Julio Medem movie. Cool!

El Árbol De La Sangre is a drama where long-term lovers Rebeca and Marc (Úrsula Corberó and Álvaro Cervantes) are going through a rough patch in their relationship, so they go away for the weekend to Rebeca's family house to write a story of how their families came to being. Marc's mother Nuria (Lucía Delgado as young Nuria) is told by gangster Olmo (Joaquín Furriel) that her parent's were killed by the Georgian mafia and want their house as their Spanish headquarters, so he takes her to a beach where after having sex with her, he abandons her. Rebeca's mother Macarena (Medem regular Najwa Nimri) is a punk rock singer 'La Maca', who quits the music business when she gives birth to Rebeca as Rebeca barely survives childbirth. With the father not in the picture, Macarena meets a fan, Victor (Daniel Grao), and falls for him instantly and he is very interested in being Rebeca's father figure which works out well as Macarena starts to have mental breakdowns. Olmo has a relationship with writer Amaia (Patricia López Arnaiz) which ends badly but leads to her meeting Nuria (Maria Molins as the older Nuria) and they fall for one another. Rebeca and Marc first meet as teenagers at Olmo and Amaia's wedding and they fall for one another despite almost dying in a freak accident. Years later, Rebeca begins to be attracted to Olmo and after help Macarena after a suicide attempt, Rebeca and Olmo begin an affair which she confesses for the first time to Marc during the writing process, leading to a massive fight which could end their already tenuous relationship. And that's only half the story. There's so much going on that the movie becomes a complex tangled web full of lies and intrigue that I don't think I've got a complete handle of. There's so many hairstyle changes and scenes set in different time periods overlapping with one another that it's hard to keep up but as with most of Medem's other movies, I was fascinated to the end. If you've ever watched a Julio Medem movie (like La Ardilla Roja, Vacas, Tierra, Lucía y El Sexo, Los Amantes del Círculo Polar, Caótica Ana, Habitación en Roma or Ma Ma), you'll know what to expect, he's not exactly stretching himself plotwise here but it's still a very good movie.

Update for 17 February...

The weekend 90s update features four movies starring Sharon Stone, all movies that I hadn't actually seen before this update. Also all movies where her character suffers a trauma in their childhood. This was a coincidence... I quite like The Quick and The Dead, directed by Sam Raimi so there's a bit of his mark over the movie, particularly a love for having shot seen through bullet holes in people's body. The movie is well cast, Gene Hackman is great as basically a variation of his Unforgiven character, Russell Crowe in his early Hollywood days when they still didn't know what to do with him, Leonardo DiCaprio as the cocky young gunslinger, a whole bunch of great character actors but sadly not Bruce Campbell who Raimi couldn't even give a small gunslinger role too. Apparently he has a cameo as he is listed in the credits, but it was cut from the movie. Hmm... The Specialist is a pretty solid Sylvester Stallone thriller where he doesn't get to do a lot of action as he plays an explosive expert. Some decent explosions scenes, the hotel falling into the ocean is a great set piece and James Woods is sufficiently sleazy as the guy setting up Stallone to get revenge on him.

Scissors is a pre-Basic Instinct B-thriller that is clearly more reminiscent of the type of movie Stone did before Basic Instinct and that's to say it's a few levels down in quality from the other movies in this update. Sort of a Hitchcock-type thriller but takes a wild turn to the ridiculous half way through, well even more ridiculous than the ridiculously silly first half. Basically Stone plays a 26-year old virgin with severe social anxiety which isn't helped when she's almost raped in the elevator in her building by a man with a red beard (that is clearly fake). Saved by an actor who lives in her building who has a disabled twin brother (both played by Steve Railsback), the actor becomes friendly with Stone but she is the sent for a job at an apartment where she is trapped with the man who apparently raped her but he has been stabbed to death by the pair of scissors she fended the attacker off with. Now she can't escape the apartment, where we spend the second half of the movie boring ourselves waiting to find out who did this to her. Very silly with so much nutty stuff going on, too long by at least 15 minutes, a bizarrely out-of-place carnival-like score and quite a lot of men who want to harass Stone. She was clearly better than this nonsense as we later found out.

Update for 15 February...

Redux Friday once more and here's a long forgotten movie that I first capped in November 2007 and is now available in HD. From the period where there was an obsession with reality-TV and movie attempted to show more extreme versions of where we were going. So many movie, plenty I've capped, where reality-TV shows turn to murder. At least I-See-You.com doesn't go down that road, it's more the hidden cam type of reality where the family inexplicably become famous despite their only real feature been sexed up women because the males are total losses. For some reason it's set in 2001, so the web technology is very dated but it also explains why there's no mention of social media, which was still in it's early stages in 2007. Also Baelyn Neff barely had a career and it looks like this is her biggest role.

Update for 14 February...

Another new Australian movie.

1% is a bikie drama where Paddo (Ryan Corr), currently the president of the Copperheads motorcycle gang, runs into a problem thanks to his dimwitted brother Skink (Josh McConville) who steals drugs from Sugar (Aaron Pedersen). Sugar offers Paddo a deal to get Skink off and also be beneficial to the gang which Paddo's girlfriend Katrina (Abbey Lee) encourages him to take the offer to Knuck (Matt Nable), the actual president of the gang who is in his last days of a three year prison sentence, where he seems receptive. Knuck gets out of prison and moves back with his wife Hayley (Simone Kessell) but prison has changed him and he now has a predilection for young men. He also wants to take control of the gang once more and his first decision is to reject Sugar's deal. At a party celebrating Knuck's return, Skink breaks the no drug rule at the club house and is kicked out of the gang. This puts Paddo in a tenuous situation where he has to decide between his allegiance to the gang and his brother and with Katrina pushing strongly for Paddo to make a move, things are going to end badly, but for who? OK bikie movie written by Nable (previously wrote the rugby drama The Final Winter) who is heading back into similar territory as he did when he starred in the TV series Bikie Wars: Brothers in Arms. There's some decent tension between Paddo and Knuck, Abbey Lee is pretty good as a Lady Macbeth-type character and there's an interesting subplot involving Knuck becoming gay because of his time in prison. There are a few silly moments, notably the ending which ends rather anticlimactically and Skink is a pretty uninteresting character, mainly around to be the bane of his brother's existence. But, it's still an OK movie.

Sadly, the videos are not in full HD yet but 1% gets released in Australia next week so I should be able to get a better copy soon.

Update for 11 February...

A couple of Australian movies for this Australian Classic update.

Winter Of Our Dreams is a 1981 drama where two people become linked to one another after the death of a mutual friend. Kings Cross prostitute Lou (Judy Davis) is the last person to see her friend Lisa (Margie McCrae) before she killed herself, in which she gave Lou her guitar and diary. Before she died, Lisa called book shop owner/writer Rob (Bryan Brown), her former boyfriend, but he didn't get to the phone in time. He hears about her death on the news and investigates her last moments where he comes into contact with Lou. Lou is reluctant to talk to him but after having issues at where she is squatting with street kid Pete (Baz Luhrmann, yep the director Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge, Australia etc.), she calls Rob who lets her stay in his home where he lives in a open relationship with his wife Gretel (Cathy Downes). Lou is drawn to Rob but he's not really interested in her in that way, more interested in finding out more about what happened to Lisa. Lou starts reading Lou's diary and after running out of places to stay, Lou comes back to Rob and begins withdrawing from heroin in an attempt to clean up her life, thinking that maybe Rob can be a part of her life but going straight isn't easy and she seems to be making the same mistakes with Rob as ones she reads in Lisa's diary. Solid drama from director John Duigan (The Year My Voice Broke, Mouth To Mouth, Flirting, Careless Love, One Night Stand with Cassandra Delaney) with strong lead performances from Davis and Brown. The movie feels very much like one of those early 80s Sydney dramas where everything is hopeless like The Killing Of Angel Street, Heatwave, Dead Easy and but is probably closer in style and plot to the Melbourne set but Sydney filmed Monkey Grip. There isn't much to the story but Davis and Brown make it work.

Hurricane Smith is 1992 action thriller where Texan oil worker Billy 'Hurricane' Smith (Carl Weathers) goes looking for his missing sister who was last seen on the Gold Coast. After getting no help from immigration, he works out that his sister was at a house which is used as a brothel and meets prostitute Julie (Cassandra Delaney) who seems to know her but Billy is chased out of the place by her cocksure pimp Shanks (who else but David Argue). Billy follows Julie and Shanks where they go to their local kingpin boss Charlie's (a dubbed Jürgen Prochnow) place, where he takes Julie for his own pleasure, but Billy interrupts them, knocking Charlie out while Julie agrees to tell Billy what she knows later because Charlie wakes up and alerts his goons but Billy narrowly escapes. Charlie and his goons catch up with Billy and torture him but he escapes and meets up with Julie and they go looking for Billy's sister. It seems that another local criminal Howard (Tony Bonner) might know but before he can meet him properly, Charlie kills Howard in a bomb blast on a boat that Billy narrowly escapes. Billy finds out the truth about his sister and decides there's only one recourse and that's to kill Charlie. Silly, low rent action thriller obviously made for the overseas market by casting Weathers and Prochnow, that has a few good stunts but a few is not enough to sustain a paper thin plot. There's also so much silliness going on in the movie which doesn't help, lots of stuff where I kept asking myself, 'Why is this happening?'. Oh sure, the plot is boring, the action lacking in quantity, everyone is barely trying but it's also majorly hampered by the one thing that hampers pretty much every movie made there (possibly with the exception of Gettin' Square) and that is that Gold Coast makes everything look so low rent because it's such a tacky place. It's quite amazing how this happens...

Just a quick note, while Hurricane Smith is in HD, the quality isn't great, it's fine but it's very dim and brightening the videos hasn't helped much. I doubt we'll get a decent HD release but it's better than DVD and better than the VHSrip I had, so it'll do for now.

Update for 9 February...

You know what time of the week it is... A couple of movies starring Jennifer Tilly in today's update, seen Bound quite a few times including in its small local cinema release and finally got around to capping it. Probably my favourite movie from the Wachowskis, yeah, yeah, I know, The Matrix, it's fine, just not a big sci-fi fan, much prefer thrillers and Bound is a pretty solid thriller. Tilly and Gershon are great but Joe Pantoliano absolutely kills in it too. Man, he had a great run through the 90s, early 2000s. The Getaway is an interesting remake of the 1972 Sam Peckinpah directed, Steve McQueen/Ali MacGraw starring thriller which was a pretty sleazy and solid thriller. Never got around to seeing the 1994 remake, probably because I liked the original and couldn't be bothered but the remake is not bad and possibly even more sleazy than the original. Baldwin and Basinger are good replacements for McQueen and MacGraw and Michael Madsen is just absolutely disgusting, possibly the most repulsive he's ever been in a movie and that's saying something. A lot better than I was expecting to be honest plus a fair bit of nudity the original didn't really have.

Update for 6 February...

A couple of new Australian releases including Pimped which was released on US iTunes yesterday and still not released in Australia...

Pimped is a thriller where Lewis (Benedict Samuel) is a highly confident man who is using rich kid Kenneth ( Robin Goldsworthy) while helping him live the high life. Sarah (Ella Scott Lynch) is a shy woman who just wants to be normal and uses an idealised version of herself to help convince her to go out and pick up a man. At a bar, Sarah meets Lewis and they hit it off and he takes her back to his place and they have sex but during sex Kenneth switches in without Sarah's knowledge and when she finds out, she goes into a rage a kills Kenneth. Not to worry though as Lewis believes this to be a road bump and they get rid of Kenneth's body. Well, that's that, they can move on their lives until Kenneth's parents arrive unexpectedly at the door. Oh dear, how are they going to get out of this? OK movie but is hampered by its own smugness as it's convinced that it's smarter than it actually is. It does get better when the parents arrive and ends interestingly but having an idealised version of Sarah follow her around becomes tedious after a while.

The Flip Side is a romantic comedy where Ronnie (Emily Taheny) is in a stable relationship with wannabe writer Jeff (Luke McKenzie), runs a restaurant that is massive debt and because she has no money, her mother is being kicked out of her nursing home. Then she gets a call from movie star Henry (Eddie Izzard) who had a fling with Ronnie when she was catering on a movie he was making in Australia 5 years previous and he is in Australia and wants to see her. Jeff is excited but Ronnie isn't as she hasn't told Jeff about how she knows him and also annoyed that he left Australia without her. Henry arrives with his self-obsessed French girlfriend Sophie (French actress Vanessa Guide) and things go well during dinner at Ronnie and Jeff's that they spend more time together, much to Ronnie's chagrin. Jeff invites Henry and Sophie on their trip to the outback and from their Henry makes his move on Ronnie while Sophie seems interested Jeff. Will Henry and Sophie finally get together or will she stick with dependable ol' Jeff? OK romantic comedy with an affable cast but this movie isn't really what I'm into.

Also watched yet another Errol Flynn biopic, In Like Flynn, that features Isabel Lucas and Nathalie Kelley but there is absolutely nothing cap and Isabel's only in it for 20 minutes and Nathalie is in a blink and you'll miss role and doesn't even have any dialogue. The film itself is basically just about one trip Errol made to Papua New Guinea, the boring one it seems as about half-an-hour is spent just on sailing there. And wouldn't you know it, lame-arse producer Corey Large has his filthy mits all over it including a big role and if you know the type of movies he makes, the quality of In Like Flynn isn't a surprise. Booooorrrring... Better to check out the other Australian Errol Flynn biopic, the Guy Pearce starring Flynn, it's terrible but has quite a bit of gratuitous nudity so at least there's something.

Update for 5 February...

Polar is a thriller where Duncan (Mads Mikkelsen) is a retiring hitman who is looking forward to retirement, well in theory. Meanwhile, his the boss of his outfit Blut (Matt Lucas) is desperately trying to make a short fall of funds and he is doing so by killing hitmen just before they retire so he doesn't have to pay them out and keep their pensions for himself. Blut gets Duncan's handler Vivian (Katheryn Winnick) to set him up but it doesn't go to plan, so Blut sends out his clean-up crew to find and kill Duncan. Duncan is living across the way from Camille (Vanessa Hudgens), a damaged woman with a big secret who he falls for. The clean-up crew find Duncan but he kills them and then finds that Camille has been kidnapped as bait and Duncan comes after Blut and his company looking for her but is set up by a hitman friend (Richard Dreyfuss) and is captured and brutally tortured. How is Duncan going to get out this? Remarkably hateful movie that is saved from being a complete write-off by the very charismatic Mikkelsen, who is the only reason to watch Polar. Oh and for the unbelievably stunning Ruby O. Fee, who is just drop dead gorgeous. Otherwise, the movie is just disgusting and nasty, so many hateful moments which is unsurprising given it's from Spun director Jonas Åkerlund (Spun is just the absolute worst). No.

Update for 4 February...

Suspiria is a remake of the 1977 Dario Argento directed horror thriller where Susie Bannion (Dakota Johnson) heads to Berlin to study ballet at a prestigious school under Madame Blanc (Tilda Swinton) where something immediately attracts the Madame to Susie. At the same time, company dancer Patricia (Chloë Grace Moretz) runs away from the school to her psychiatrist Dr. Josef Klemperer (um, SPOILER OF SORTS: it's quite clearly Tilda Swinton as a man) as she believes that a coven of witches runs the school and they want her for her own nefarious needs. Susie immediately impresses, so much so that she takes over as lead dancer in the next production. She also feels a presence taking over her body as she dances. Another dancer Sara (Mia Goth) befriends Susie but is also worried about the disappearance of Patricia, so Sara does some sleuthing and finds Patricia is a secret part of the school but she is found out. Meanwhile, the Madame and the other teachers at the school believe Susie is ready to help them with their nefarious plans but Susie has a surprise of her own. I must confess that while I'm a fan of a number of Argento's movies, for some reason I never really got into cult favourite Suspiria, possibly because the plot to the movie is very thin and it's his most excessive exercise in style over substance. The long in gestation remake which is still a very European movie, is about a hour longer and it sure feels a lot longer. That's not to say that it's a bad movie, the last hour is actually very good and far more full on the original with spectacularly edited dance sequences and some decent gore, but boy does it take it's sweet time getting there. I think I liked this movie better than the original, but I suspect fans of the original will probably hate it. Ah well, you're not going to please everyone...
