Update for 29 January...

Capped the South African movie Girl From Nowhere a few weeks back which got me interested in finding more South African movies and while there's not a lot around and they aren't easy to find, there's enough for a few updates over the next few weeks or so. Today's update features the boarding school comedy trilogy Spud which has quite a few small scenes to cap throughout the three movies. I know Tanit Phoenix from the Death Race movies and she was in one of the Lost Boys movies they made in South Africa (also married Sharlto Copley) and Alex McGregor from Of Kings And Prophets (and is quite saucy in these movies).

Australian Classics for 28 January...

Delving into the DVD collection for another couple of Australian movies I haven't gotten around to watching/capping.

Fatal Past is a 1993 thriller, possibly erotic, where Costello (Costas Mandylor) impresses during a drug deal gone wrong and he is recommended by right hand man Fuller (Boris Brkic) to gangster David (Terence Cooper), who gives him the job to keep an eye on his personal mistress/courtesan Jennifer Lawrence (Polish actress Katarzyna Figura). Jennifer goes to college professor Helen (Gennie Nevinson) to tell her about her ongoing dream of being a 1700s geisha in Japan who is brutally betrayed that Jennifer believes to be very real. David finds a new supplier for his drugs, Peter (Steven Grives), who takes a liking to Jennifer but she is off limits. Jennifer chats with Costello and she seems interested in him but Costello knows not to go there. An attempt is made on David's life and Costello once more saves the day by gunning down the assassin. Jennifer's dreams are becoming more vivid and are being mirrored in real life, leading to Jennifer and Costello having sex at David's house while he's out. David and his goons find Jennifer with Costello and beat him up and while David attempts to punish Jennifer, he is murdered by Peter who wants everything of David's including Jennifer. Everything is mirroring Jennifer's dreams meaning that both Jennifer and Costello will die but can they break the spell before Peter kills them both? OK, let's get it out of the way; it's never not funny that the lead female character's name is Jennifer Lawrence and they constantly say her full name throughout, so you can imagine how long that lasts. Apart from that, Fatal Past is absolute rubbish, a stock standard gangster plot mixed bafflingly with a story of Japanese love gone wrong that at best helps the movie get to 80 minutes but is completely unnecessary and only gets in the way of the main plot and vice versa. The movie tries to situate itself as a Zalman King-like erotic thriller but those movies are usually well-lit and Fatal Past looks like they forgot to pay the electricity bills, possibly not helped by a bad transfer but it's still very dark throughout. The ending is absolutely ridiculous, somehow involving the professor in the final shoot out which makes absolutely no sense other than to reverse how things were going to end if it followed the dream. Also, how did the professor find Jennifer at David's secret hideaway which is mentioned how secret it is at every opportunity? The best thing I can say is that Katarzyna Figura is well cast and a bit of a mystery how she even ended up in this movie although it probably has something to do with her turning up in Robert Altman movies at the same time and she was kind of an unsung sexpot of the period. Also, at least it's better than the writer/co-director's next movie, the career killer Offspring.

Welcome Stranger is a very low budget 2006 Melbourne drama where 18 year-old Adam (Christian Poppi) gets a phone call out of the blue from Luke (Adam Scott, another one, gee it's such a common name...), who he hasn't seen since primary school and wants to him to come out for the evening. Adam accepts, not knowing what to expect. He meets him at Luke's dad's (John Brumpton) house and share a bong together with Luke's dad (!) before going over to Luke's mother Sandra's (Suzanne Barr) house where they are having a barbeque with Sandra's new partner Rodney (Andy McPhee) and Luke's sister Megan (Jo McKenzie) and her friends and boyfriend Paolo (Okan Husnu). Rodney says something unkind to Sandra and she goes off in a huff and Rodney leaves at her insistence. As day turns into night, everyone get a bit more drunk and Megan, her friend and Paolo go off to a club while Luke fights with his mum and goes off to bed, leaving Adam all by himself. Sandra and Adam have a chat which leads to them having sex although it goes badly. Megan and Paolo come home and have sex and Adam hears them outside their window, so he masturbates. In the morning, Adam enters Sandra's room and asks her to go out with him, which she is reluctant to do so and puts down their liaison to being a little drunk. Paolo hears them talking and all hell breaks loose with Adam chased out of the house. He has nothing in common with Luke and wonders why he was invited in the first place. Slice of life drama that feels a bit odd, mainly due to why Adam was invited by Luke to hang out with his family as he looks completely out of place the entire time. It's never really explained why he was invited and when Luke sulks off to bed halfway through, it becomes more perplexing. Adam's just a horny kid and the mess he gets himself into in the end is probably the only notable thing about the movie and makes far more sense than his reason for being there. I think this confusion stops it from being a good movie but it does have some interesting things to say about aimless young men and can't be completely dismissed.

Also capped a couple of short films made by the director of Welcome Stranger that appear on the DVD, both of which had nudity in them and feature a few actors that appear in Welcome Stranger. Dirty Work is probably the better of the two about a young man who does yard work for a family friend only for he and his sister to get caught up in the family friend's sleazy games. Wooden Heart is about a bored I.T. salesman who comes to Melbourne on a work trip and can't be bothered continuing on with the convention, so he calls up an escort and has sex with her. Both are similar in style and themes to Welcome Stranger and both feel like they could be explained better.

Australian Classics for 27 January...

A couple of Australian movies, a new one and one from the 90s.

True History Of The Kelly Gang is another biopic of famous outlaw Ned Kelly, this one based on the dramatised novel by Peter Carey where young Ned (Orlando Schwerdt) watches his mother Ellen (Essie Davis) service a local sergeant (Charlie Hunnam) so that they can get by as his useless father looks on. One day, Ned kills a cow and steals some meat, which makes his father more useless but the sergeant catches up with him and pins the crime on his father despite Ned's protestations and sends him to jail. Ned saves the life of boy of privilege and the boy's mother (Claudia Karvan) attempts to convince Ned's mother that she can look after Ned but Irish Ellen despises the English and refuses to let Ned to go with her. Meanwhile, Harry Power (Russell Crowe) takes an interest in the family, particularly Ned and takes him under his wing, but Harry is a bad man, he murders a man right in front of Ned and then gets the sergeant on his side so that Ned can get revenge on him but Ned only wounds the sergeant and can't finish the job, so he ends up in juvenile detention. Years later, Ned (George Mackay) is making his way back to his family, getting into bareknuckle fights for money which catches the eye of Constable Fitzpatrick (Nicholas Hoult). Ned and his friend Joe Byrne (Sean Keenan) come to the Kelly farm and find his all siblings grown up and his mother the same old mess she always was, now shacked up with American crooner George King (Marlon Williams). Fitzpatrick takes an interest in Ned and introduces him to Mary Hearn (Thomasin McKenzie), who he begins seeing but before long the Kelly family would be back in trouble with the law when a family dinner with Fitzpatrick ends with Ned shooting Fitzpatrick in the hand and the Kelly boys and Joe on the run, while their mother is placed in a mental institution after her own tussle with Fitzpatrick. While on the run, Ned and his brothers kill a bunch of policemen and now they are the most wanted in the state. Ned rustles up a group of locals to join him to take on the police which ends with Ned gunning down Fitzpatrick. The police gather en masse and surround the Kelly Gang at the Glenrowan Inn where it will be their last stand.

I'm not gonna lie, I really don't care for the Ned Kelly story or it's latest incarnation every twenty years or so and this movie is no exception. Most of the Kelly Gang story is myth now. This version from director Justin Kurzel (Snowtown) is grimy and filthy as hell, probably far truer in that way than previous versions and this is hardly surprising as Snowtown is one of the filthiest films I've ever seen, so they got the right man for the job. But as with Snowtown, there's no bite and the movie doesn't make the impact it should. The story is told in two parts, a fair bit of focus on Ned's barely talked about youth and it's fairly interesting but the transition between the ages is clumsy and in what feels like a few days, Ned goes from back in town to the public enemy number one with little motivation and a lot is brushed over and rewritten. There's a fairly decent cast of name actors but most of the big names have small roles with no real stand-outs although Essie Davis is quite good as Ned's mother and George Mackay (1917) as the older Ned is OK. But as I said, the Ned Kelly story bores me and this movie did nothing to change that.

The Boys is a 1998 drama set the day of release from jail of older brother Brett (David Wenham). He is picked up by his younger brother Stevie (Anthony Hayes) who is rapt to have his big brother home while waiting at home is his mother Sandra (Lynette Curran) and Brett's long-suffering girlfriend Michelle (Toni Collette). His other brother Glenn (John Polson) is getting ready to go see Brett much to the disdain of his girlfriend Jackie (Jeanette Cronin) who wants him to get ready for work instead of visiting his brother. Brett seems excited for some alone time with Michelle but is far more interested with getting back with his brothers. The brothers go back to the scene of the crime, the bottle shop, where Brett makes his presence felt but it is back at home where he really makes an impact. While Jackie tries to get Glenn to go to work, Brett gets into an argument with Jackie and she leaves. He intimidates Stevie's pregnant girlfriend Nola (Anna Lise Phillips), who Stevie treats like dirt. Brett tries to have sex with Michelle but can't 'get it up', so he takes it out on her, causing Michelle to leave and Nola to call the police, which Brett does not like. Jackie attempts one last go at getting Glenn away from his brothers to no avail. Nola leaves and Brett has an argument with his mother which results in the brothers beating up Sandra's partner George (Pete Smith), who was trying to protect her. The brothers are mad and their women have left them and they are bored and looking for trouble and they are about to commit a heinous crime that will tear their family apart and make them the most hated people. Solid drama with a searing break out performance from Wenham who towers over the movie and intimidates everyone including his own mother who is scared of what he could and does end up doing. While all the leads are pretty good, none come close to Wenham who overwhelms the movie and deserves all the plaudits he received for the movie. The movie itself is hard to watch at times, Brett is such a nasty character and there are threads of scenes that suggest something absolutely horrific is about to happen, thankfully unseen, but just the suggestion is hard to stomach. A very good, full on drama that's well worth a look.

Update for 26 January...

90s weekend with another 3 movies. Gee, the 90s sure did love the hitman who has a crisis of conscience movie and Killer is another one. This one is about a hitman (Anthony LaPaglia) who's had enough but has to kill a woman (Mimi Rogers) who stole money from an acquaintance but then he meets her and falls for her but she is also desperate to die. Of course his conscience gets to him and he can't do it, but she must die and she wants to die, so he has a conundrum he has to wrestle with. There's some interesting stuff in this movie but this obsession the 90s had with hitmen with a conscience is tiresome.

Not much to say about Haunted except the audacity of showing Kate Beckinsale's body double's face and not even caring it's clearly not her is topped by the final sex scene where some other guy plays Aidan Quinn's character and it's just two different actors playing the characters and it's incredibly baffling. What the hell is going on there?

Australian Classics for 22 January...

Still going with the Australian Classics, today a movie I thought was lost to time...

Summer Of Love is a 2001 romantic drama where Amanda (Natalie Laing) joins her boyfriend Tom (Scott Corfield) on the South Australian coast after the funeral of her father hoping to move on. Instead, she contemplates leaving Tom or at least have more sexual experience with the suggestion of an open relationship. At the shops, Amanda meets American artist Michael (Ryan Miller) who is in town for a big art project, though nothing comes of their brief encounter until the next day when they bump into each other at the beach. Michael convinces Amanda to swim over to the caves and while there, they have sex. Amanda tells Tom about this and he can't believe that she would find someone else to have sex with so quickly and contemplates leaving her. Amanda continues to see Michael while Tom decides to have a chat with Michael and ends up becoming friends with him. After a dinner together, the three have sex and it goes so well that they decide to have a polyamorous relationship. Things go well for a while with an occasional hiccup but after Amanda's mother comes to visit to see if she is doing alright coping with her father's death, Amanda becomes reluctant to continue the relationship. Michael meets local woman Briana (Bree Maddox) and they start having sex which settles it for Amanda and she not only ends the polyamorous relationship but decides to return to Sydney.

Long forgotten movie that was actually made-for-TV and funded in part by Channel 9, bafflingly so as the movie only played once in the final days of 2001 and was never seen again until it turned up on Amazon in the last year. Channel 9's involvement is bizarre as this movie is pretty low rent and doesn't look like anything they usually made in that period, although it does have that patented Channel 9 sleaze. Director Wayne Groom already had a list of notorious movies before making this movie; he produced the absolute dog shit sleaze-fest Centrespread and wrote and directed nudist beach movie Maslin Beach (another movie I need to get around to capping). Summer Of Love is a fairly simple tale, basically a three hander with Bree Maddox thrown in to show a bit of skin when the time is right. The movie feels more like a soap opera and the acting isn't exactly astounding, the three leads barely having a career. Neither of the male characters are interesting, not even the American artist and a big deal is made of Amanda's mood swings and she has plenty of them making her pretty annoying. The exploration of the polyamorous relationship is interesting and is handled fairly well, if only the male characters were worth the effort. The movie is a fair bit less sleazy than Groom's previous movies but he can't help himself by casting nude model Maddox, her character incredibly one dimensional that it's a surprise when it takes over an hour for the requisite sleaze. I haven't seen Maslin Beach for a while and barely remember it but I can say that Summer Of Love is better than Centrespread, not by much but at least it has a logical plot and treats the central relationship with some dignity. Having said that, Summer Of Love is basically a soap opera with a lot more sex and nudity and is clearly made for television as there are requisite ad breaks like a soap opera but most of them are in between scenes in the most baffling places.

While the release is in HD, the darker scenes show that it is fairly low quality and features heavy pixelation which is a shame and I seriously doubt there will be better quality in the future. As I said, I never thought I'd see this movie ever again.

Australian Classics for 21 January...

Yesterday, I mentioned the real sex movie The Band, which was directed by one of the people behind the movie in yesterday's update, The Money Shot. Well, I was able to get around to capping it and there's a lot to get through.

The Band is a 2008 'rock n' roll porno' which follows the band Gutter Filth as they go about their business. Lead by Jimmie (Jimstar), a self-proclaimed rock god more into himself than the band who after a gig promptly quits the band and starts a solo career leaving the band and their manager Jennifer (Anthea Eaton) in the lurch just as they are on the cusp of making it. Jimmie is so full of himself that he finds a groupie and fucks her while his girlfriend Candy (Amy Cater), herself in an all-girl band going nowhere, comes home to find him with the groupie. Candy struggles with no band and no boyfriend but summons up the courage to audition to be the guitarist for Gutter Filth and manages to get the gig. Meanwhile, a groupie (Brianna Heart) works her way through the band, playing spectator to drummer Dee's (Butch Midway) kink, having sex with bassist G.B. (Rupert Owen) and then setting her sights on Candy, all the while taking souvenirs. The band become more popular and Jennifer takes a shine to Candy but there's always something stopping them from getting together. A twist of fate sees Gutter Filth top the charts while Jimmie goes on a downward spiral after being found with shit on his chest. The band have a party to celebrate where the band members get what they deserve while Candy and Jennifer finally get together. Fairly straight-forward movie, not really much in the plot department and not really a full blown porn movie despite a lot of real sex scenes but the movie melds plot and sex pretty seamlessly, much better than the average porn movie. Most of the actors are first and only timers like director Anna Brownfield's previous movie The Money Shot and most of the actors are fine and probably more natural than in The Money Shot. The sex scenes are shot differently from most porn with a definite focus on a feminine perspective and less focus on female anatomy while there's quite a lot of male masturbation and a bit of fetish thrown in. It's all done in a positive way and no one is shamed for their preference although one scene is very dicey. I found the movie fairly watchable, much more so than other real sex movies (I'm looking at you 9 Songs) but honestly, there's probably too much sex and not enough plot for the movie to have real impact. But it's an admirable attempt at a normal movie with real sex.

Unsurprisingly, The Money Shot has never been released in Australia, even a R-rated friendly version touted in the commentary, because Australia has an absolutely terrible classification system in regards to sex, hell I doubt the movie would even get an X rating as fetish and violence, even consensual violence is completely banned. Bah, I won't go on. Anyway, I got the movie from the unrated release in America, which tells you everything about how tight regulations are in America and in Australia. Got it a few years ago but totally forget about until I come across The Money Shot, so it's finally watched and capped. Doubt there will be a HD version but you never know.

Australian Classics for 20 January...

Back on the Australian Classics. Was looking through my wide-ranging DVD collection and found that I had dozens of Australian movies that I've never capped for some baffling reason, some just sitting there for over a decade, so it's time to finally get to them and I'm planning a weekly Monday update for this, like today's update. Well, today's update came about because I watched a web series that played on Channel Go! on the dying days of 2019 so that Channel 9 can make up the necessary amount of Australian Drama quota for the year. The web series was called Hactresses! and someone that appeared in the series was radio personality Jo Stanley and I remembered that I watched a movie a decade or so ago called The Money Shot, which was made in the late 90s before she became big on radio in Melbourne (and around the country I assume) and I never got around to capping it, so here goes...

The Money Shot is a 1999 made, 2007 released comedy about Carmen (Fiona Parker), who lives with her boyfriend Stuart (James Bridekirk) in a share house with two others, Vince (Jim Koutsoukos) and Tracy (Anna Den Hartog) and is finding it hard to get a job in the media industry. The housemates joke about making a porn movie but when Carmen hits rock bottom, she decides to give it a shot despite having no experience and no money. They attempt to cast the movie and get pretty much all male responses, mostly freaks who just want to be in a porno but come across professional porn actor Garry (Peter Stefanou), who is perfect but is wary of these amateurs but he does give them advice that helps them on their way. Only one woman applied to audition and it is a trans woman Cindy (Pamela), which Carmen is happy with but the others aren't. They get money under the table from Stuart's uncle which helps them immensely and then find another woman, Missy (Claudia Mitterer) who is very interested and promises to bring her friend Angel (Jo Stanley). Carmen contacts Garry again and he decides to join the movie and gives them a contact to get further money while she decides that their house is the best and cheapest place to make the porn movie. On the day of filming, not everything goes to plan but you never know, they just might end up actually finishing it. Very low budget movie, made for $4,000 which is about what the porn movie budget in the movie was, but it makes the most of its limitations. The cast is likeable although limited and most never worked again and the one working actor, Peter Stefanou, is a stand out in his role and gives it his all. The story is pretty old hat but at 75 minutes it breezes along with no fat and there's even a few laughs along the way and the ending is pretty amusing. Admirable debut from directors Anna Brownfield and Lance Petrie, the former would go on to write/direct the real sex movie The Band, which I should get around to cap.

Update for 18 January...

90s weekend checks out another Abel Ferrara movie (Dangerous Game, Body Snatchers, King Of New York) with New Rose Hotel, which is based on a William Gibson short story set in Japan where two American businessmen X and Fox (Willem Dafoe and Christopher Walken) coax a prostitute Sandii (Asia Argento) to seduce an in demand Japanese scientist so that they can get him to leave his job to work for the company they work for. In the mean time, X falls for Sandii and she is able to get the scientist to defect but the scientist's employers and none too pleased and start killing people involved in the defection, so X holes up in the New Rose Hotel, basically a storage box and tries to work out what went wrong. Typical Ferrara movie, lots of naturalistic and improvised conversations mixed with sex, Walken's having a ball with his walking stick and his demise is straight out of the Weapons Of Choice music video, truly bizarre. His character here reminds me a lot of his character from another 90s movie, Wild Side and talk about a 90s movie that needs to be in HD. I've seen that movie too many times and both versions, sadly not available in decent quality. The final act is bizarre, basically Dafoe in his storage box replaying earlier scenes or extended versions of until he works out what happened. Not the most exciting way to conclude a movie but definitely a different way to end it.

My memory is that New Rose Hotel wasn't even released in Australia not even straight-to-video. I'm pretty sure his previous movie The Funeral was his last movie to be released in cinemas locally and only got a token release in one cinema. The Blackout went straight-to-video despite a bit of press, a movie I mention way too often (check out last Saturday's 90s update...) and need to get a HD copy of. Plus, I reckon I would've remembered it getting a release also the movie was not classified, usually a sign it didn't get a release. His movies went missing for a while locally until DVD and even then not all were released or in a timely manner. Shame really as Ferrara's movies are always interesting even when they are not great like this one is.

Update for 15 January...

Another Australian movie, one which I capped 15 years ago and some more short films.

Lost Things is a 2003 horror movie where four teenagers go for a weekend trip to a beach while telling their parents they are going elsewhere. Emily (Lenka Kripac) and Tracey (Alexandra Vaughan) go with Brad (Charlie Garber) and Gary (Leon Ford) to a beach that is pretty much deserted for some sun, surfing and possibly sex although the girls are going to make the blokes work for it. Once there, the four have a feeling of déjà vu that they have been there before but none can remember when and there's a sense of creepiness about the beach not helped by word that three people died there a year earlier. Things progress until they come across a drifter named Zippo (Steve Le Marquand) who has a threatening demeanor although he does save Tracey from a death adder. He is also the man that Emily is seen with briefly before they go on their trip although she acts like she does not know him. Brad tries to get with Emily although Emily is incredibly reluctant while Gary and Tracey seem destined to get together. Over the weekend, the sense of déjà vu increases as well as a sense of dread and it also seems impossible for any of them leave the beach. A shocking event has happened or about to happen and the four teens are trapped in a nightmare waiting for their fate. I think this is the third time I've seen this movie (including one of 5 people that saw it in cinemas back in 2004) and I'm still baffled, a little less than I have been but I'm convinced that the movie just doesn't make sense. It's obvious who the three are who died, but what happened to the survivor (there is a mention that they disappeared but that's it) and why did the massacre happen? Also, why are the four teens reliving their nightmare from a year before? So little is explained, so little makes sense and it's nigh on impossible to work out what happened a year earlier and what is happening in the present. I've got no idea and after three attempts, I don't think I ever will...

Lenka Kripac is better known for music (particularly the song The Show) but she had an OK acting career before concentrating on music including a prominent role in the movie The Dish and a number of guest roles on TV shows and of course her time on morning cartoon show Cheez TV. Pretty sure her brief nude scene in this movie was her only nude scene. Alexandra Vaughan didn't have much of an acting career, basically this and an episode of All Saints, which I capped a scene from.

Also another couple of short films from the early 2000s, not the best quality but that might be as good as will ever been available.

Update for 13 January...

An Australian movie today plus a bunch of Australian shorts because I haven't done any in a long while.

Mortal Fools is a 2008 sex farce, loosely based on A Midsummer Night's Dream where couple Helen (Kaitlyn Cox) and Alex (Charles Kevin) host a housewarming party in their new palatial house and invite Helen's ex Dimi (Jai Koutrae) and struggling actress Jen (Melanie Armstrong) in an attempt to get them together and gay couple Nigel (Zach Lee) and Eddie (Dallas Palmer). Meanwhile, angels Danny (Lindsay Moss) and Suzanne (Sarah Campbell-Lambert) with magical avatar Robin (Amber Gokken) turn up to observe their behaviour without being seen by party and Danny wants to cause a bit of mayhem. The party is fairly boring and Dimi and Jen don't click, so it needs some spicing up, so Danny gets Robin to zap Alex and make him fall in love with Jen, which he promptly does in front of Helen and all hell breaks loose. Dimi is zapped and falls for Helen and disgusted by Alex's about turn on her, Helen gets revenge by having sex with Dimi, which goes badly. Danny is loving every minute of playing with people's emotions and decides to ramp it up, mixing couples both straight and gay all the while disgusting Suzanne. Danny goes too far and zaps Suzanne into reality where everyone can see her and the party all fall for her but she escapes before an orgy can break out. Can the participants in the party get back to normality or will things be changed forever? Or is something else in play? Strange movie that goes nowhere for the first 25 minutes and then once the sex farce begins, the movie goes from 0-100 and is all sorts of fun and frivolity before a bizarre third act twist which makes little sense and then ends in the most baffling way. The movie isn't a complete loss, the middle third sex farce is a definite highlight and saves the movie from being a bit of a bore, but there's not enough going on outside of this to make it worth watching.

Never seen Mortal Fools available anywhere, it wasn't released on DVD locally and not available on streaming although it was on US Amazon for a while, but Community TV comes through and this played on their Sunday night movie slot last week, so I was finally able to get view this movie 12 years after it's release. The Sunday night movie slot on Community TV is always worth a look to see what's on because I've seen a few movies I've never seen elsewhere,. both Australian and overseas. Well, in between the monthly showings of Monkey Grip and The Highest Honour for some inexplicable reason.

Also added a few short films from the early 2000s including a couple that were on the old SBS short film show (Above The Dust Level and Bad Ass Mono-Winged Angel), probably titled Eat Carpet or whatever it was at the time. A sad loss from SBS as there were always good short films to watch or cap. Capped some really good ones like Tender and Perception, both of which had a fair amount of nudity in them. I reckon I've still got some old episodes lying around on some hard drive or even my PVR and considering it hasn't aired since 2014/2015, I've kept them for quite a while. Ivan and The Silence aren't even listed on IMDB, both film school short films I found when a certain film school put up a fair chunk of their alumni's work for viewing, sadly now long gone, but I was able to get a whole bunch of them like the two in this update. Both early works for Anne Lise Phillips and Hayley McElhinney, might even be Anne Lise's nude debut as the short film is from 1998 although Envy (in dire need of a HD upgrade) was also released in 1998.

Update for 11 January...

90s weekend is here again. Molly's really the only reason (although Sarah Lassez is nothing to sniff at and in this movie and The Blackout she was quite good at playing the sweet little innocent girl) to watch Malicious and she plays a pretty decent psycho stalker and she has to do a lot of work because the male lead is an absolute drip, hardly worth losing your mind over. And we know that Molly Ringwald's nude scene from Malicious is an all-timer but it absolutely came out of nowhere. No one expected it and especially not in a terrible stalker B-movie that went straight-to-video. It feels like someone got a hold of a monkey paw and made a wish for this to happen and as we know, there's always a down side to making a wish. Get the feeling the wish maker was on his way home to finally watch the movie and gets in a horrible accident and dies without having seen the scene.

So, this update goes out to that wish maker. Bless you...

Update for 5 January...

90s weekend continues. Slowly working my way through the Tom DiCillo back catalogue (Living In Oblivion, Delirious) and Box Of Moon Light is the next one, another oddball comedy where an electical engineer played by John Turturro has a dream that leads him to an old water park he visited as a kid. He eventually finds it and it turns out it's been gutted. On his way back home, he comes across a car broken down on the side of the road which is owned by an oddball in a Davey Crockett costume (Sam Rockwell) who he helps and it turns out he lives off-the-grid. As he tries to get back on the road, the electrical engineer gets into a whole bunch of scrapes, which remind him of being a kid and he ends up staying with the oddball longer than expected. Turns of Box Of Moon Light is a pretty funny movie and you gotta love a movie where a guy blows off his family to be with an off-the-grid oddball. Definitely worth a look. Need to get the rest of the DiCillo collection, Johnny Suede which stars Brad Pitt, Nick Cave and Australian actress Alison Moir (definitely one for the Australian/NZ actresses overseas section), The Real Blonde and Double Whammy.

Update for 4 January...

The first 90s weekend update for 2020.

Back in the mid-90s, every 21st Century or Newvision release (one of the other, I can't remember exactly which) had a trailer for today's movie, Twogether before every movie and it seemed like they trailered that movie for a decade I saw it so often (mainly in fast forward although there could've been nudity in the trailer, don't remember). Anyway, 25+ years later I've finally gotten around to watching it and as soon as I saw that the running time was 122 minutes, I knew I was going to have a problem with this movie. Well, Twogether is a relationship drama where a party boy artist (Nick Cassavetes) falls for a rich girl environmentalist (Brenda Bakke), although that is barely mentioned in the movie, she's the world's worst environmentalist if that's true. Anyway, they have a wild week in Las Vegas, get married, decide that was a stupid idea, get a divorce, fuck to celebrate and whammo, she gets pregnant. Well, they're stuck with one another now and while they kinda like one another, they don't want to be together. So fun and games except this drags on and on for the aforementioned 2 hours with two of the most obnoxious characters ever. It even ends in an incredibly obnoxious way. Just a turgid movie all round. It reminded me a lot of another 90s movie that had a similar plot and was similarly turgid, She's So Lovely and wouldn't know it, that movie is directed by Nick Cassavetes, the star of Twogether. Ah, the circle of shit...

Update for 1 January...

Wow, it's 2020. Shit...

2019 was another fruitful year, plenty of new stuff, plenty of 90s movies, plenty of TV movies and series including a number from the honey pot I should dip into again and there's always more actresses from Australia and New Zealand turning up in International productions so it's business as usual for 2020.
