Update for 29 June...

90s weekend update continues with the British peculiar romantic comedy about a virginal young man Peter (Christien Anholt) who works for a Tory minister (Tom Bell) who gets him to go undercover at a BDSM club and document 'violent' activity so that he can shut it down. The club is run by dominatrix Tanya Cheex (Guinevere Turner) and her offsider Eugenie (Julie Graham) and Peter manages to get himself to the exclusive club and immediately intrigues Tanya and lets him into the inner sanctum giving him greater access to the club but both manage to win each other over despite Tanya not wanting penetrative sex and the lingering issue of Peter helping get the club being shut down. While the movie delves into the underground of BDSM, it's hardly extreme despite it's classification rating and is a playful movie that never takes itself seriously. It does resolve things in a nice bundle a little too easily and ends in a win for 'good guys' despite a reality that would probably end very differently. But the movie is fun and that's all that matters.

Update for 28 June...

90s weekend update starts on a Monday with another movie starring Ashley Judd, after I recently capped her in Ruby In Paradise.

Normal Life is a pretty standard couple become bank robbers drama with Ashley Judd's character at a crazy level of well above 10. If she isn't putting a gun to her head, she's harming herself with a knife or turning up to a funeral straight from a rollerblading session. Judd does her best with the character but her character is too unbelievable to make things work, not helped by a scene where her husband (Luke Perry) takes her to drug rehab when she really needs some psychiatric help. Perry's character's robbery plan is pretty decent and the couple's character seems to come out of nowhere with no real evidence as to how they caught them out. Then there's the stupid final scene which makes no sense whatsoever with Perry getting shot by a total Hail Mary shot from a dying officer, but Perry's reason for making an escape is even sillier. Normal Life is a pretty watchable movie but there's a lot of craziness that stops it from been a particularly good movie.

Update for 22 June...

A couple of 70s Australian movies. Some quick synopses:

All At Sea is a 1977 bawdy TV movie which stars the members of a game show called The Celebrity Game, where a bunch of stuff happens at an island resort. Mostly, it's just everyone is horny and 'comedy' ensues and plus some con artist is posing as a priest and plans to fleece the people of the island. Oh, and Abigail turns up and briefly shows her breasts. A terrible, wholly uninspiring movie that's clearly a cash-in for a popular TV show. The comedy is typical bawdy comedy stuff, with horny, snivelling men attempting to sleep with Abigail and some of the others. Usually I'd say something like this movie was probably funny when it was released but I seriously doubt that was the case as the jokes are so tired although I'd be lying if I said I didn't laugh a couple of times at some OK, not bawdy jokes.

Summer Of Secrets is a 1976 drama where a loved up couple Kim (Nell Campbell) and Steve (Andrew Sharp) arrive on an isolated island where they squat at an abandoned house and settle in for a while. Meanwhile, they are being watched by the only other inhabitants of the island Dr. Adams (Arthur Dignam) and his helpful assistant Bob (Rufus Collins). Turns out the doctor is obsessed with his former wife, a famous actress Rachel (Kate Fitzpatrick) who has probably died and with Bob is obsessively trying to recreate her most famous movie to relive her memory. And you wouldn't believe it but Kim looks very similar to Rachel so the doctor kidnaps her and forces her to help in the recreation of the movie. Steve goes looking for her but finds himself in peril when Bob chases him off. But when Steve finally confronts the doctor, it turns out that Rachel is very much alive but incapacitated and he's trying to rehabilitate her. Unsurprisingly strange movie from director Jim Sharman, his next movie after The Rocky Horror Picture Show, again with Nell Campbell (also Rufus Collins is an extra in the movie). It's a hard movie to make sense of as it's not a thriller and while it's probably a drama, the movie's ending is fairly anticlimactic and no one seems to have any urgency to get things done. Even the kidnapping is low key and Kim even seems to like impersonating Rachel and the four main characters seems to hit it off fine until Rachel gets back on her feet. The movie is interesting but feels underdone with little dramatic tension but it does have that trademark odd humour that Sharman likes putting in his movies best exemplified by a scene at a general store.

As always with movies capped from VHS rips, the quality of Summer of Secrets is down and the video is pretty soft and not of great quality but it is watchable. Considering the movie is pretty much forgotten and I doubt it will be upgraded to a better quality. It's only chance is if someone does a Jim Sharman retrospective, which I'm surprised it hasn't been done considering the movies fairly popular movies he's known for. All At Sea actually got a DVD release from Umbrella which is far more than it deserves.

Update for 9 June...

A couple more 90s Australian Classics off VHS.

Dags is a 1998 comedy where a group of male and female 'dags' (basically different types of losers) attempts to make their way through life. Cheryl (Tanya Bulmer) is an unemployed 20-something whose boyfriend Daryl (Brian Roberts) is a massive stoner and 'dole bludger' and completely fucking useless. After her father has a heart attack while perving on her 'slutty' friend Tina (Sheena Crouch), her mother gives her ultimatum to marry Daryl and move out of home. Well, Cheryl manages to convince Daryl to leave the couch and go to the video store to pick up a movie but he stays in the car and smokes dope while Cheryl gets a movie. She is then 'hit on' by nerdy video store employee Kevin (Daniel Cordeaux) which she is sort of into until the store is robbed by Kevin's hopeless friend Trevor (David Callan) who takes Cheryl hostage. As she's taken hostage, Cheryl convinces Kevin to marry her although he is reluctant also Trevor hits it off with her. The hostage situation becomes a national sensation with Tina jealous of Cheryl's fame and Daryl still smoking a bong in his now stripped car. Also, dopey lothario Enzo (Sam McCool) is going out with Cheryl's friend Charlene (Penny Cooper) but is cheating on her with Tina who desperately wants to stop Cheryl's wedding because she's getting all the attention. And Prozac (Angus Sampson) and Miles (director Murray Fahey) are chronically unemployed and try to keep it that way. Silly low-budget comedy that has quite a few laughs and is funnier than I remember it being although the comedy is very Australian based so there's no way the movie would've travelled. The plot is ridiculous but it sets up some good jokes but the bookends set up like a wildlife documentary doesn't work and should've been dumped. Plus at 80 minutes, the movie doesn't muck around. Not a bad little movie even with it's obvious constraints.

Beyond My Reach is a 1990 drama about writer/director team Alex (Alan Fletcher) and Christopher (David Roberts) whose local hit film has got the attention of American super-producer Steven Schaffer (Nicholas Hammond) who wants to release it in America. He sends out his 'right-hand man' Terri (American actress Terri Garber) who tells them that they are giving the movie a small release but are getting no money but they do get a free trip to Los Angeles to meet the movie people. After viewing the movie with his people, Schaffer decides to recut the third act which pisses off Alex but Christopher is willing to see how it pans out. Alex takes the next flight back to Australia while Christopher stays on and begins a relationship with Terri. She introduces him to an agent who teases him his passion project if he directs this big new comic book adaptation called Viperman. He reluctantly accepts but he eventually gets sucked in by Hiollywood excess plus he has a lead actor who is terrorising the production. Meanwhile, Alex has a new script which is rejected by local funding bodies but on the plus side he is marrying his girlfriend Pam (Nicki Wendt). Terri is sick of Christopher's behaviour and decides to take a new job in New York. A new producer takes over Viperman and Christopher just doesn't give a fuck any more. Alex calls up Terri and gets some advice which turns out to be for getting his and Christopher's passion project up, which they get to do their way. Viperman is a success and Christopher is locked in to a multi-film contract and can't direct the passion project. He quits and spirals out-of-control leading to a car accident that nearly kills him. The producers want another director for the passion project but Alex sticks to his guns and waits for Christopher to get well for him to direct it. Just want to state up front that I really hate movie insider movies so I was always going to have a problem with this movie and this movie is so far inside, it's dizzying. Everything about the movie is total cliché about art being better than the Hollywood machine but then they show a scene of the passion project and it's laughably terrible, the type of movie that Australians would ignore lets alone Americans. Then there's a montage set to 'I Love L.A.' by Randy Newman which is now such a joke, I did a full body cringe watching it. I will say the plot is fairly prescient, just look at what the latest Best Director winner next movie. It's written by Frank Howson, who's a total hack and scam artist, so it's hardly surprising that this barely released and long forgotten movie is a lazy, uninteresting movie. It barely clocks in at 75 minutes but it hits more clichés per second than any film I've seen recently. Terrible...

As always with capping from VHS rips, the quality is below DVD quality but I've gotta say, both of these movies are about as good as your going to get with VHS releases. They are not bad at all plus Dags is in proper widescreen.

Update for 8 June...

The 90s weekend merges with an Australian Classics update with three movies from the 90s off VHS.

Powderburn is a 1998 road movie/thriller where Chrissy (Blazey Best) and her friend Brad (Blaise Cooper) arrive back in Australia with Brad becoming violently ill as the stomach full of drug-filled condoms starts to turn on him. They are closely followed by Lily (Olivia Pigeot) and her tongueless partner Joe (Rolando Ramos) who are working for drug trafficker Dex (Ian Bliss) with Lily looking to kill the both of them for the drugs. Well, Brad shits himself to death with the drugs still inside him so Chrissy is fucked but she remembers her old boyfriend Peter (Nic Bishop) is studying medicine and drive over to him to ask for his help but he is none to pleased to see her as Chrissy is a wild one who has a knack of getting into trouble. She manages to convince Peter to cut open Brad but he doesn't have the tools but his veterinarian father who lives in the country does so they go for a drive followed by Lily and Joe and also a corrupt cop Draper (Alan Lovell) who wants his share. The groups play a cat and mouse game across the arid countryside in a desperate attempt to retrieve the drugs and get the money for them, so who's going to get the loot and what that surprise that is waiting for all of them. Remember this movie being one of those Video Ezy releases where they distributed a bunch of low budget Australian movies that might have otherwise be lost in time like a number of films were. Around the same time, road movies were in vogue in Australia with Kiss Or Kill and True Love and Chaos both getting a run and Powderburn is of a similar vein but the budgetary constraints show heavily here. The story is OK and the actors, mostly up-and-comers or solid character actors do alright but the plot of the movie is nonsensical and the road trip plot makes no sense other than to pad out the movie to 90 minutes. There's a 10 minute stretch in the movie that's utterly absurd and is probably the best part of the movie but the movie doesn't play up the absurdity of the situation enough, to it's detriment and it ends up like every Tarantino rip-off did in the 90s which it never needed to. It's not a bad movie but it's plot is too silly and formulaic for it to be a sleeper hit. At least it's better than the execrable True Love And Chaos.

Most of the cast still work pretty regularly today, Blazey Best was recently in the disastrous series Between Two Worlds but had nothing to cap from that show. She does have nude scenes in at least 3 movies, which you can find list here. Olivia Pigeot has a pretty solid resume without really breaking out and also has nude scenes in 3 movies with Powderburn being her nude debut. Nic Bishop has appeared in a number of US TV series and continues to work regularly. Ian Bliss and Alan Lovell have had solid careers as character actors although Lovell's career seems to petered out recently.

Close Contact is a 1999 telemovie where Amanda Douge plays a young lawyer whose lover boss is murdered and millions of dollar is missing from a trust account of a jailed criminal boss which his trophy wife (Kimberley Davies) wants. After attempts to kill her fail, the young lawyer's ex-husband hires a bodyguard (Grant Bowler) who reluctantly takes the job as he needs the money. But the young lawyer is stubborn and she looks for the money and her boss' killer while the bodyguard tags along warning her to not do what she is doing. But she's a strong, in dependant woman so she sends him off to mind the trophy wife who the killer is also after and the wayward teenage daughter (Abbie Cornish) of a furniture salesman for some reason. Typical Screentime crime telemovie but this one is more disposable than usual and I remember that this was dumped on a Friday night in the days before AFL dominated Friday nights, not exactly prime time for telemovies. The plot is ridiculous, Douge is clearly playing a character 10+ years older than her but does OK and the bodyguard gets dumped regularly to unrelated B-plot which strangely becomes the A-plot for about twenty minutes where we find out that Abbie Cornish is playing a schoolgirl stripper. Mostly forgettable but it does have the requisites unnecessary nude scene that Screentime productions always had, this time in the first minute from Amanda Douge. Also good to see that Douge is back acting in Britain after not having a credit for over a decade.

Mad Bomber In Love is a ridiculously obscure 1992 comedy thriller where Bernard Lynch (Craig Pearce, now better known as a script writer mainly for Baz Luhrmann) ingratiates himself into a sharehouse after a night out with one of the tenants Julie (Rachel Szalay) but it soon turns out that he's the mad bomber that is currently terrorising the city. Julie thinks it's great to begin with because he seems to be supporting worthy causes but when an amoral TV reporter (Alan Lovell again) rats him out on TV, he turns into a psychopath who entombs the house and forces it's tenants to live under his tyrannical reign. Mildly funny satire that has it's limitations, mostly budgetary but also there's only so much you can do in a share house movie before it gets repetitive. The cast is mostly unknowns but there's a slew of cameos from actors like Marcus Graham, Craig McLachlan, Zoe Carides, Paul Chubb (doing the worst Swedish accent ever) amongst others. Silly stuff, very Sydney centric but I'm just glad I finally found it as it was never released on VHS and only had a showing on TV back in the 90s which some very nice person dutifully taped and finally made it available.

As you will see, all of the below are from VHS recordings off the TV, so the quality is even lesser than if they were originals. Powderburn probably comes up the best although I had to encode the sound to mono because it wasn't clear otherwise. Close Contact is OK quality but being a TV movie, it has long disappeared and this copy I had was better than another I found from a local recording which was tracking very badly. I still can't believe I finally found Mad Bomber In Love, that movie basically disappeared off the face of the Earth with no video release.

Update for 7 June...

90s weekend update continues.

If I was to sum up Desperate Hours in a word, I would call it a 'mess'. The tone of the movie is all over the place, characters seem to be working in different movies and some scenes are utterly baffling. Mickey Rourke is actually pretty good in the lead role as an intelligent psychopath who takes a family hostage as he waits for his girlfriend (Kelly Lynch) to arrive. Mimi Rogers is alright too as the mother Rourke takes hostage but everyone else is doing their own thing. Anthony Hopkins' character is playing the tough patriarch who's looking to overpower Rourke and his cronies but in one scene where he empties his account at the bank, he plays it as if he has a bomb strapped to him and it'll go off it her doesn't get the money. Lindsay Crouse as the lead cop seems to be playing her character as if she's in the 1950s original and constantly makes baffling decisions. Kelly Lynch goes from cold and calculating lover of Rourke to anxious wreck from scene-to-scene and drives her car at racing car speed constantly for some reason. One scene where David Morse emerges from burying a body a bloody mess and wanting a lift is so baffling it only seems to exist to end a stalemate in the plot and thank fuck for that because the cops are so inept, the only people more inept are Rourke's cronies. It goes on and on, just a disastrous mess of a movie which might be explained by a revolving door of directors ending with the out of favour Michael CImino who seems to be lumped with the movie more than willing participant. I heard Desperate Hours was bad but was unprepared for how bad it turns out to be.

Update for 6 June...

90s weekend update time.

Hadn't seen Ruby In Paradise before and had no idea what the movie is about but as soon as the director Victor Nunez's (Ulee's Gold, Coastlines) name came up, I knew exactly what I was in for; a wistful journey set in Florida. An early role for Ashley Judd as Ruby, a woman running from a bad relationship and ending up in Florida where she gets a job at a store as she settles in. She is warded off a relationship with the shopowner's son Ricky, but ends up with him briefly before moving on and meeting Mike (Todd Field) and they sort of have a relationship while Ruby settles into her job quite nicely. Then Ricky returns and tears her comfortable world apart in one fell swoop and then she has to struggle on with no job and dwindling money. Very good movie about a woman's struggle just to find equilibrium and Judd is excellent, this movie proves she was going to be a star and not long later she was. Not a lot happens but it's never not interesting and the movie is a pretty steady ride with a satisfying ending more than a happy ending. Enjoyed the movie much more than I was expecting.
