Australian Classics Redux for 25 January...

Today is all about Frances O'Connor, just redoing some old stuff that didn't appear on the site before today (excluding Book Of Love but even that's 10 years old now).

Haven't watched the rare excursion into Australian film noir, 1997's Kiss Or Kill, in a while and had completely forgotten how much of oddball movie it is. A lot funnier than I remembered it being and some truly bizarre moments. The sleepwalking stuff is quite strange, but it makes sense of the opening scene which feels out of place until Frances O'Connor's character starts acting strangely. Love the Aboriginal tracker, the first scene with him negotiating his payment is hilarious. Or the cop that recognised someone from their teeth. Or the hotel owner who offers free T-shirts as recompense when Frances O'Connor's character gets burnt. Director Bill Bennett made a whole slew of movies throughout the period but has only made one since 2002 (2010's Uninhabited) which is a shame as he could go between outsider independent movies and Hollywood movies (like Two If By Sea and Tempted). Kiss Or Kill is somewhere in between with its off-putting to some French New Wave-like jump cuts and heavy Hollywood-like intrigue. I enjoyed it once again (I first saw it in theatres back in 1997), but it will throw people off with its oddball style and humour.

Sadly the quality of both the Thank God He Met Lizzie DVD and the Book Of Love DVD isn't great, a fair bit of interlacing issues on the original DVDs. That Thank God He Met Lizzie DVD would have been made in the early 2000s so is very old, but it was still better than the Book Of Love DVD, but I doubt we will be seeing an upgrade of either any time soon.

Australian Classics Redux for 22 January...

Here we go again with another round of redos from the pre-johnny-moronic.com era. All the scenes from Visitors are in one video as Radha Mitchell wears the same bikini throughout the movie. Rewatched Under The Radar and had forgotten what an oddly structured movie it was. The first 15 minutes is at the ending, then goes back to the start and continues to go back to the ending before it finally becomes the ending. Also has an eclectic cast, so there's Nathan Phillips because it was the mid 2000s and he needed to be in every movie for some reason, there's comedian Steady Eddy, there's model Chloe Maxwell and a whole bunch of Melbourne actors although the movie seems to made entirely in Queensland. Very bizarrely made for a straightforward genre movie. Gee, The Extra already feels quite a bit antiquated even though it's only 10 years old. Has an obsession with filming with film at a time when movies were already moving over to digital. No wonder there was money problems... Hating Alison Ashley is a movie that probably should've been made 10-15 years earlier when the book was popular. Seemed out of time when released and if it was made today, it would have to change immensely. Also reminded me that I haven't seen Saskia Burmeister in a while, 2012 was her last credit, looks like she's moved on. Shame...

Another round of reduxes, starting to slow down in number (well except the Australian Classics reduxes, but there's not a lot them left to do either). Haven't done any new movies so far this year (well except on the Australian/NZ actresses overseas section), so it's time I watch some new movies.

Not happy with the quality of the 2046 videos, a bit of interlacing in the video which is poor for a HD source, but there's not too many alternatives at the moment.

Australian Classics Redux for 12 January...

Had this series (which I first capped 9 years ago) lying around for a while as apparently Puppy was released on Bluray, but I've never seen a copy for sale anywhere except on DVD. Either it's a lie and never happened or I've lost my mind. Neither can be ruled out at this stage...

Puppy is 2005 oddball black comedy where Liz (Nadia Townsend) has decided to commit suicide after one last run-in with her sister involving the death of her dog and now wants her gone from her house. During her attempt, she is saved by Aiden (Bernard Curry) who takes her to his house and proceeds to mistake her for his absent girlfriend Helen. Aiden imprisons Liz at his house which is guarded by two mean looking dogs which stops her from escaping and continues on his relationship with Helen/Liz regardless. Liz attempts to formulate a plan to get out of the house, but Aiden's anti-social behaviour is making it harder than it should. The longer she stays, the harder it becomes to leave especially when things escalate after Aiden unknowingly kills the local doctor (Terence Donovan) when he tries to help Liz escape. Working in similar areas as Black Snake Moan (although made a few years before that movie), Puppy is a bizarre movie that plays very pitch black which it would have to considering it's subject matter. It's a movie I liked a fair bit, a few good laughs although it's probably more odd than funny and both leads a quite good portraying two desperate characters. Shame the filmmaker, Kieran Galvin, hasn't made any movies since as he made some great little shorts before Puppy plus he also wrote Feed which is truly something else. But that's the Australian film industry for you, people disappear all the time...

Australian Classics Redux for 3 January...

Lots more Miranda Otto today, mostly redos of the old stuff that wasn't available, but also a quick couple of series from very early in Miranda's career, her first couple of movies Emma's War and Initiation, that I had never capped before. Just quickly looking through her filmography, I think the only Australian movie of hers I haven't capped is South Solitary, which also seems to be the only one of her movies available on Bluray. I'll get around to capping that soon enough. Of course, there's also her overseas stuff which I probably need to redo some of those series. Maybe I will...

I was hoping to have a widescreen version of The Nostradamus Kid, but the DVD I bought which clearly says on the cover it is 16:9 aspect ratio turned out to be the same fullscreen one I already had. I'd usually complain, but the original DVD is one of the worst authored DVD I've ever seen, so at least this was better quality. And it was only $5, so no (real) complaints from me. The Sex Is A Four Letter Word video is from a VHS copy, it's pretty good quality though. Some of these movies are from DVDs made in the early 2000s, so they are overdue for an update. Maybe one day there'll be high quality versions of these movies, doubtful, but we can always hope.

Today's update is part 1 of a bunch of Miranda Otto redos that turned out to way bigger than I thought it would and if I can get the time, can probably go longer. Today's update features Miranda and others from 3 comedies (probably better described as light comedies); Love Serenade from 1996, Doing Time For Patsy Cline from 1997 and Danny Deckchair from 2003.

Here's my list of my 20 favourite series that I capped in 2015, no particular order this year as I'm not really fussed spending half an hour or more trying to rank stuff.

- Ana de Armas and Lorenza Izzo in Knock Knock (always love Ana, some good nudity here)
- Amanda Tito in Queen of Carthage (brief scene but a great scene. Also liked her in the new season of Step Dave)
- Katherine Waterston in Inherent Vice (that scene, you know the one, the one that goes on forever and is possibly still going...)
- Lena Headey, Alexandra Breckenridge and Penelope Mitchell in Zipper (some great nudity here plus Aussie girl Penelope doing her first nudity a big plus)
- Adele Perovic in Fell (another of the SLiDE girls to breakout and already has done a fair bit of nudity)
- Kristen Wiig in Welcome To Me (pretty awesome scene in the casino, depressing movie I would never revisit though)
- Reanin Johannink in I Survived A Zombie Holocaust (good little NZ zombie comedy with some zombie Reanin nudity)
- Alicia Vikander and Sonoya Mizuno in Ex Machina (great nudity here, Alicia's scene is an all timer. 2015 was her year definitely)
- Cassandra Swaby in Bedlam (bafflingly movie but some good nudity from Cassandra)
- Alexandra Essoe in Starry Eyes (love this movie and Alexandra is a great find. Hope she gets some great roles in the future)
- Merritt Patterson in Wolves (great scene, terrible movie)
- Astrid Bergès-Frisbey in I Origins (love Astrid, great in The Sex of Angels and some good nudity in this curious movie)
- Shailene Woodley in White Bird in a Blizzard (great nudity from Shailene, impressive stuff)
- Emma Leonard in 800 Words (nice surprise, liked her in her brief stint on Home and Away and spent a bit of time on the nude beach in this PG series)
- Freya Mavor and Stacy Martin in La Dame dans l'auto avec des Lunettes et un Fusil (loved Freya ever since I saw her on Skins and she's really sexy in this movie)
- Dakota Johnson in Fifty Shades of Grey (yeah, we know, we know and such portions too)
- Mandahla Rose and Julia Billington in All About E (excellent lesbian sex scene, very lengthy and a nice surprise)
- Rosa Salazar in Night Owls (late entry but a good brief look at her breasts)
- Emma Booth in Glitch (bizarre scene from a bizarre series and was quite popular on the site too)
and as always Emmy Rossum and Emma Greenwell plus Nichole Bloom in Shameless (always delivers Shameless. Currently watching series 5 for upcoming capping and it's gonna be a big update...)

I was thinking maybe I'd struggle as I had a few slow months there where I was doing a lot of old stuff, but surprised at how many I had to leave out. Mind you I think this every year and considering I do between 300-400 update a year, there's going to be plenty to choose from. I would say that those that closely missed were probably Isabel Lucas from The Loft and Careful What You Wish For (doesn't mind showing her bum, wish she'd also show more), Britt Robertson from The Longest Ride and Ask Me Anything, Mia Wasikowska from Madame Bovary and Freida Pinto from Blunt Force Trauma. I also liked newcomer Maddison Brown briefly turning up in Strangerland, someone to look out for in the future.

I typically missed a couple of milestones this year; the fact that this is the 15th year of Johnny Moronic Capturing and that I passed 2000 series on the movie side, but that's kind of being bastardised by the other sections plus I've renumbered quite a few series in the other sections, so it's probably ends up being well over 2000 series, whatever.

Fast coming up to 500 Australian movies capped on the website. Before today's update the number was 487 movies with another 120 or so with nothing to cap in them. After the Miranda Otto updates, that number should be pushing 500. That quite something as there's probably somewhere between 1200 and 1500 overall and a fair chunk of them either have never been released or are unavailable. New movies are released all the time too. Also hoping to cap some short films and web series as there's some hidden gems in there, but gotta fossick through a whole lotta nothing to get there.

Here's hoping for some great stuff to cap in 2016, some hidden gems, some unexpected classics and Aussie actresses finally annexing Hollywood. So, keep enjoying the site!
