Update for 30 October...

Just a quickie today.

Webdultery is a low budget Canadian drama about a couple, Deb (Christine Tizzard), a successful but overworked businesswoman and Fred (Anthony Cortese), a struggling writer, who have hit a bad patch in their marriage. Both are communicating with another person by via webchat, that seems highly likely to be each other, but they are communicating a helluva lot better via that means than in reality. Both decide to have an affair by signing up to dating sites, which has varying degrees of success. Deb has a lot of messages, mainly from the usual sleazes and curiously, her somewhat sleazy brother, but after a rough start with an overattentive man, she finds love. On the other hand, Fred gets nothing except from a prostitute. But, during a dinner with friends, Deb's friend Lisa (Rebecca Nicholson) flirts with Fred and takes it further when Deb tells her of her dalliances. Inevitably, things go stale in the affairs and there's one last twist that will shake up their relationship forever more (read above if you haven't worked it out). It's funny, this film is surprisingly well made and has a very interesting on the subject of internet affairs, but the film tenuously hinges on the the contrived conceit that the couple are accidentally revealing themselves to one another via webchat. It works, barely, but it's a dicey concept that delivers a predictable, but still clever payoff. For a practically no budget film, this is a surprisingly very well made film, but as I said, it's does so very tenuously.

Redux Friday for 26 October...

Not much to say today with this redux.

Anyway, finally saw the much delayed (as in, had it's premiere over two years ago) The Wedding Party and it's a total bust female nudity wise. Pretty much what's in the trailer is the scene with Isabel Lucas plus a brief bare back moment. The no nudity thing probably wouldn't have annoyed me as much if I hadn't had to take a 4 hour return train trip just to go see it at the only cinema it's playing at in this state. Fucking hell... Also, this film feels dated already, first thing I noticed is Adam Zwar now has hair in Lowdown (which seems to be the basis of the series continual hair replacement 'jokes') and is balding badly in this film. Speaking of hair, Lincoln Younes has floppy hair here compared to his short, back and sides on Home and Away. And, there's a scene at Carlton training where one woman admires Setanta O'hAilpin, who doesn't play for them any more. You've gotta get these films out quickly... One more thing, the perfect casting of Nikita Leigh-Pritchard as Essie Davis' daughter, geez they look alike.

Australian VHS Classics for 24 October...

As promised, another from the vault.

Afraid To Dance is a 1989 drama about two unnamed characters that cross paths in their meandering lives. The Man (Nique Needles from Dogs in Space) is a petty crim who is going nowhere. When he is picked up by a woman while hitchhiking, he intends to steal from her, but the tables are turned and he is left without money and very nearly without clothes. He goes to the town and intends to steal a car to get to his destination, but it just so happens that the owner of the car (well, I assume the owner of the car), a woman (Rosey Jones) is coming back to it, having done some light shoplifting. She reluctantly gives him a lift, they sort of hit it off and he stays with her but asks him to shove off in the morning. Well, he doesn't and eventually they become closer and this comes to a head when they break into someone's house and watch a video that the man of his house is making for his children. He then takes her virginity, then he dies the next day in a police chase. Of course, she becomes pregnant. Hmm, not a lot going on here, in fact the film sort of meanders to it's destination without really setting the world on fire, just two social outcasts that find each other and have a brief moment together, not much more than that. Kinda pointless to be honest...

As always with VHS videos, the quality is not perfect, but this came out alright, the video below is a dark scene, so that doesn't help, but the video is OK and quite lengthy.

Australian VHS Classics for 23 October...

It's been a while since I've cracked open the vault and dusted off some old VHS of an Australian film and reappraised it. Or whatever happens below.

A Cold Summer is a 2003 improvised drama focusing on three damaged individuals in Sydney over a period of time (hmm... a summer perhaps?). Tia (Olivia Pigeot), a jazz singer, is followed home one afternoon by a disheveled and drunken Bobby (Teo Gebert). After a brief argument, they have sex, then begin an affair, even though Tia has a boyfriend. Soon, Tia bumps into Phaedra (Susan Prior, quite good in the recent TV series Puberty Blues), who are old friends, but Phaedra is still mourning the death of the love of her life 3 years after he died. Tia convinces the now socially inept Phaedra to pursue a fruit shop worker, but fails miserably. As Tia and Bobby continue their ruinous relationship, Phaedra finds out that Tia had sex with her ex and decides to get revenge by seducing Bobby. It turns out Bobby is living in his car after being kicked out by his wife. Also, it turns out Tia's life is a complete lie. There are no winners here, including anyone who watches this impoverished piece of shit film. Oh dear... Pretty much improvised by the three cast member, it's all over-the-top melodrama at it's worst and not really interesting at all. None of the characters are worth visiting and boy do they bang on about it, their behaviour barely rational and not deserving of any sympathy. This is definitely in the list of worst Australian films of all time, hell, when you watch it (I found it impossible to find, I don't even know how I come about it...), you'll find it tough to find an argument to say it doesn't belong on the worst list.

I'll tell you how hard it was to finally see A Cold Summer. In 2003, I tried to see this film in the only cinema it was playing (the now defunct Lumiere Cinema) on the Monday after it was released and it was already pulled. Then the movie disappeared off the face of the Earth, no videos or DVD release anywhere, not even here in Australia. Last year I came across a widescreen VHS of the movie (which must be one of last VHS of an Australian film seeing as though everything was pretty much DVD by 2003-2004) and finally got around to watching it, and well, as I explain above, hardly worth it. Ah well, I can at least tick it off the list of Australian films I watched.

Also, Olivia Pigeot is naked in another VHS rarity Powderburn that I picked up about 6 or 7 years ago after looking for years and converted a while back and is just sitting there waiting for me to get to it. I'd probably would have done it by now, but Blazey Best spends the entire movie sweating it up in a low cut singlet top that I just have to cap and will take forever to do. One day soon...

Another VHS classic tomorrow, this time an 80s lost curio, well maybe not that curious...

Redux Friday spills into Sunday...

Been sitting on this one for a while as it's taken a while to make, but here goes...

Haven't watched Teenage Caveman since I first capped it, so I couldn't remember whether I liked it or not, but rewatching it recently, I don't know how I could of forgotten how awful this movie is. Basically, it's a B-picture directed by Larry Clark (of Kids, Another Day in Paradise, Bully and Ken Park fame), so it's features a helluva lot of exploration of teenage sexuality, which is the best thing about thing about the movie. That isn't saying much as Clark has said it better in his other films. But, when it comes to the B-grade exploitation stuff, Clark is so utterly clueless and it all seems completely out of place. And then there's the acting which is at times unbearable to watch (nothing unusual for a Clark film). Geez, Tiffany Limos is excruciating any time she has to emote and most of the cast has barely acted in anything else and it's not hard to know why. Plenty of nudity, but even that feels stilted as it seems that full frontal nudity wasn't allowed, so that has affected the editing, which is terrible as is. Wow, I know B-films aren't usually the best, but Teenage Caveman takes it's awfulness to a level most B-filmmakers would cringe at. Ugh!

Update for 18 October...

Hmm... how 'bout a disturbing update...

Excision is a drama about a teenage girl Pauline (AnnaLynne McCord) who is having strange erotic dreams involving death, possibly fuelled by her obsession of becoming a surgeon. Pauline is part of an average dysfunctional suburban family including her uptight, control freak mother (Traci Lords), henpecked father (Roger Bart) and sister Grace (Ariel Winter) who seems to get most of the attention as she is suffering from Cystic Fibrosis and also does what her mother wants. Pauline attempts to be 'normal', but her erotic fantasies are taking over. She attempts to lose her virginity with Adam (Jeremy Sumpter), boyfriend of a popular girl she hates, but even that is taken over by her fantasies. As she goes over to the dark side, she gets expelled from school and then hatches a plan that is so shocking, it will change everything. Hard film to describe the plot of because it is fuelled by Pauline's very disturbing fantasies, but Excision is a darkly humourous gem of a film about a typical suburban family that will be pushed to the edge. Both AnnaLynne McCord and Traci Lords are superb in their respective roles, both surprisingly so as neither had shown they could act that well. Let's face it, your enjoyment of the film will depend on how you can handle the erotic death fantasies (most of which are below), so you've been warned, this film ain't for the squeamish.

Update for 16 October...

Being a bit busy with other things recently, especially the last week and now that I've finally upgraded my tank of a computer, I can get back to more capping. Loving that now I can do everything at least twice as fast as before which is fantastic for HD videos. But now everything is faster than I can handle such as using the mouse in Photoshop, so that going to take time to get use to. Fun!

First Night is a light comedy about a rich industrialist Sir Adam (Richard E. Grant) who has a dream to be in a world class opera, but he hasn't the skills. So he produces his own. He employs a bunch of up-and-comers to star and make the opera, but it seems the main reason he did it was so that he can get close to conductor Celia (Sarah Brightman). Director and choreographer Phillip (Oliver Dimsdale) has cast Italian protege Nicoletta (Mía Maestro) and newcomer Tom (Julian Ovenden) who lies his way into the role. At a raucous do, Sir Adam bets Tom that he can't bag Nicoletta and it doesn't take long before that looks like happening, but Nicoletta finds out and it threatens to jeopardise the production. Meanwhile, other tête-à-tête begin between the cast and other people involved in the production. So, will the production actually go ahead without issue? Yeah, not a fan of opera, or for that matter, the going on behind the scenes, so I didn't think much of the movie, but the nudity from Emma Williams is nice, so it wasn't all torturous...

Update for 11 October...

A quick update today.

The Perfect Teacher is a Canadian TV movie about Devon (Megan Park), who is a spoilt little rich girl and she gets whatever she wants. At the school dance, she spies new teacher Jim Wilkes (David Charvet) and wants him, badly. Jim is currently going through an ugly divorce from his ex, who wants to move across the country with their daughter. He has also just hooked up with Rachel (Boti Bliss), a fellow teacher at the school. Jim turns out to be Devon's new math teacher and the new volleyball coach, although Devon has no interest in playing volleyball. However, she does worm her way to being his helper, which she takes way too seriously including worming her way into his and his daughter's life. She even imagines being with Jim. When Devon catches wind that Jim may have to move to be with his daughter, she runs down his ex in her car. Then she makes her move on Jim, but he does not respond to her advances as she likes and when Jim attempts to step away from Devon, she cries rape. This is about to get ugly, well if it wasn't pretty much like every made-for-TV stalker movie ever made. Nothing new here and the only parts worth watching are below. Meh...

Australian Classics for 10 October...

Still not overly in the mood to do new stuff, but this series was requested, so why not?

Libido is a 1973 portmanteau film consisting of 4 short stories revolving around the erotic feelings of certain people in very different situations. The Husband is about an ultra-jealous husband who allows his wife and mother of his two children (Elke Neidhart) to have her own life, but has secret fears that she is off with other men. His fears seems unfounded or are they? The Child, directed by Alvin Purple director Tim Burstall, is about a young boy who becomes infatuated by his new nanny (Judy Morris), but things sour dramatically when she falls for a man and ends in tragedy. The Priest, directed by Fred Schepisi, is about a Catholic priest who falls madly in love with a nun (Robyn Nevin), but does she return the love. Finally, The Family Man is about two married men, Ken (Jack Thompson) and Gerry (Max Gillies), who decide to hook up with some young women while Ken's wife is in hospital after giving birth, but things don't go to plan when they pick up two girls (Debbie Nankervis and Suzanne Brady) from a bar. Tough to like all four stories as they are all quite wildly different in tone and how they are told. Both The Husband and The Family Man are told in a more contemporary, mainstream way while the other two stories are more artfully told. The Priest is almost all narration, which gets a bit monotonous. Personally, I would say my favourite story was The Family Man, mainly for its interesting look at sexual politics in a time of great change for women and because Jack Thompson acting drunk is always fun.

Oh and then there's Debbie Nankervis, wowee wow wow we-wah... Debbie and Elke Neidhart also get naked in the same year's Alvin Purple and for another curious comparison, Debbie Nankervis screams to a man "Why don't you rape me?" as she is stripping off in both films. Didn't I recently say I watch too many movies? Yeah...

As I said in the last update, I haven't had the time to do anything new on the movie side, I was able to finish the Spartacus: Vengeance update on the TV side of the site. But, I have a few HD redux series in reserve, so I'll release a few over the coming days to compensate. The recent Rise: Blood Hunter series was a big hit, so there is some love for the HD updates.

Redux for 2 October...

Haven't been in the mood to do a lot in the past few days so I thought I'd finish off an old series that I had laying around to at least release something. Can't believe this film is from 1996, coulda sworn it was later. I also love that I could only find this DVD from a Thai seller, of all the films to get a DVD release it's this long forgotten nothing of a film. Well, at least I can cross off one more old series that has now being redone.
