Update for 28 April...

Back to the HD stuff. And with one of my guilty pleasures in dance movies.

Step Up 4: Miami Heat is the fourth in the ever-continuing dance drama franchise that doesn't even bother with changing the plot from film to film. Anyway, The Mob are a group of renegade Miami dancers who are vying for the $100,000 prize in an online competition where competing groups are trying be the first to get 10 million hits on their flash mob dance videos. The Mob is run by friends Sean (Ryan Guzman) and Eddy (Misha Gabriel), who work at a hotel that is owned by the ruthless Mr. Anderson (Peter Gallagher). At a party at the hotel, Sean meets Emily (Kathryn McCormick) and they connect through dance, but Emily runs away as she fears being caught by her father, who just happens to own the hotel. You see, Emily wants to be a dancer against her father's wishes although he gives her one summer to get into an exclusive dance school or she'll come work for him. Sean recognises that Emily wants more and asks her to join The Mob, much to Eddy's chagrin. As the flash mobs become more and more ambitious and with this, more popular, Sean and Emily fall more in love, but when Mr. Anderson decides to build a new hotel where The Mob live and hang out, things are about to change for The Mob and the competition is not all there is. As I said above, practically the same plot as Step Up 2 and 3 or any number of dance franchises around, so nothing more to recommend it than the dancing, which is quite well done, but for the life of me using one of the lamest additions to recent popular culture in flash mobs seriously drags this film down. This film works so much better when it's Sean and Emily versus the world and not a bunch of people 'solving' society's problems through 'unstructured' dance (although that's exactly what Sean and Emily end up doing, but in a much less silly way). Gotta admit, Kathryn McCormick is a mighty fine dancer, better than her predecessors and it's good to see another Aussie girl in Cleopatra Coleman get a pretty decent role in the movie as The Mob's DJ.

Australian VHS Classics for 23 April...

Back to the vault and dusting off a stone cold nude orgy.

Centrespread is a 1981, um, uh, sci-fi softcore drama, yeah, that'll do... set in the not too distant future where the world is divided into the have and the have not and the world is run by a central computer system that determines who are the haves. A sex publication, yeah, that'll do... has hired Gerard (Paul Trahair) to be their photographer and has one month to come up with the most stunning shots for their special edition, I assume... Gerard is given free reign to find the best model for these shots and after a hard days shoot, visits an antique shop on the poor side of town and discovers Niki (Kylie Foster) working there and instantly declares that she's the one. But, Niki is not interested in being a model, even if it means that she will go to the otherside. Gerard chases Niki, determined to get her to pose while becoming more disillusioned by the state sanctioned models and set-ups. Will Niki pose for Gerard? Will Gerard become less comatose? How many naked girls showing very 80s nudity can you fit into one movie? Will this film make a jot of sense? Awwww, who cares? The first film from notorious producer Wayne Groom (Maslin Beach, hopefully coming soon to the site, Strangers, Summer of Love, which aired once on Channel 9 in 2001 and has sadly never been seen again starring Bree Maddox that had some good nudity in it from memory) is a total tax write-off if ever there was one. The whole sci-fi, post-apocalyptic setting and how it manages to be a life and death situation that Gerard has to get the perfect nude shots is so baffling that I wonder why not just show naked girls for 75 minutes instead. It'd make more sense. The actors are pure amateurs with only Kylie Foster seemingly having any sort of career (check out Kitty and Bagman for more nudity from her). Paul Trahair never gets out of first gear, a total walking comatose and being the lead character, that's just pure death. But, there's lots and lots of naked girls and a bit of sexual abandon, so, there's that to get you through. Fave scene involves Gerard being taken aback that Niki is wearing underwear cos they don't bother with that on the other side of the world. HAHAHAHAHAHA

As with all VHS titles, the quality is below the usual standard and the copy of Centrespread isn't too bad, perfectly watchable with the occasional tracking glitch, but that is rare. The aspect ratio though is all over the place because it changed in every goddamn scene so, some videos are in fullscreen and others are in widescreen, but you don't miss a thing. I promise.

Just a quick one today, not much, but if I don't release it, it will just sit there for a while before I dump it six months later. Can't be arsed reviewing The Sapphires, not because I didn't like the film, it was fine and a pretty fun time, just can't be stuffed, that's all. Gotta say though, Shari Sebbens is a real cutie, really liked her in that episode of Redfern Now too (funnily enough fighting with Miranda Tapsell), hope to see more from her.

Redux Friday gets a little high...

Continuing on from yesterday with 2001's Harvard Man, playing from the same James Toback songbook. Alan Jensen (Adrian Grenier) is the star point guard on the Harvard basketball team, who's technically going out with Cindy Bandolini (Sarah Michelle Gellar) while screwing his lecturer Chesney Cort (Joey Lauren Adams). When a tornado flattens the family home, his parent's tell him that they are not insured and to get back on their feet, they would need $100,000, which they don't have. Alan hatches a plan to get the money from Cindy's mob boss father, which he sort of does, but through Cindy, who tells him that Harvard mustn't 'beat the spread' in the next game. Cindy puts her money on at her father's loyal bookie Teddy Carter (Eric Stoltz) who runs the business with Kelly Morgan (Rebecca Gayheart). Alan does enough to lose the game, everything's fine, except... Teddy and Kelly are undercover FBI agents who want to take down Cindy's dad who are also involved with Chesney is some sex club of sorts. Oh, and Alan has taken 3 cubes of experimental LSD, instead of the recommended 1 cube and completely loses his mind. Which might not necessarily be a bad thing... for the moment anyway. A very far fetched plot, particularly the more it unravels is bizarrely halted when Alan takes an overdose of LSD. That half-an-hour is something to watch, even if the plot pretty much dies during it and when it stops, the plot is conveniently concluded. Not a complete loss, but no classic either. But, you kinda get that with the Toback style.

Redux Friday bursts through...

Looking around all my stuff to find anything to do for Redux Friday, I come across today's film, When Will I Be Loved and then looked up and found tomorrow's film, Harvard Man, both directed by James Toback and both films pretty much forgotten, although I remember their being a frenzy about them both around their release because of what might happen in said films.

In reflection, When Will I Be Loved is a very simple film that starts out as a baffling version of Celebrity Spotto. Ooooh, there's Mike Tyson screaming for some girl named Cara (admittedly, Tyson did appear in Toback's Black and White where Robert Downey Jr hits on him, Tyson's look is priceless; and later Toback did a documentary on him, so it's no big thing he turns up here). Hey, Neve bumps into Lori Singer arguing with some black guy and then gives her plenitudes. Then there's Damon Dash, yeah whatever. After that, a half-arsed plot develops where Vera's (Neve Campbell) boyfriend, hustler Ford (Frederick Weller) sets up an indecent proposal between Vera and media mogul Count Lupo (Dominic Chianese) where Vera ends up scamming the both of them and it ends with murder, all in the space of a the daylight hours of one day. All of Toback's excesses are well and truly on show here - overlapping dialogue and music, lengthy takes, random hook-ups, cocksure characters etc. - inevitably, When Will I Be Loved is best forgotten, save for Neve Campbell's first on-screen nudity.

Tomorrow, Harvard Man which is an annoying film, save for 30 minutes when I character takes an overdose of LSD and it turns into a Toback film at 32x speed, which is baffling, fascinating and annoying...

Update for 16 April...

Haven't watched many movies recently, so not much doing. Here's something brief.

Stitches is an Irish comedy horror movie about Stitches the clown (comedian Ross Noble), who dies at Tommy's 10th birthday party thanks to a prank played by the kids. 6 years later, Stitches is brought back to life and comes back to get revenge at Tommy's 16th birthday party. And he does so by increasingly comedic ways. That's about it. Stitches is actually not a bad film and has a few laughs along the way, mainly involving the comedically gruesome deaths. I just wish they let Ross Noble off the leash, he seems to constrained by the script here otherwise, Stitches well worth a look.

Australian VHS Classics for 9 April...

The vault opens and out comes another forgotten Australian Classic off VHS.

Death Games aka Final Cut is a 1980 psychological thriller about wannabe documentary filmmaker Chris (Lou Brown) who with his journalist girlfriend Sarah (Jennifer Cluff) score an interview with the mysterious and reclusive millionaire and possible sleaze merchant Dominic (David Clendenning). Chris and Sarah are invited on the boat for a party Dominic is having with his also mysterious, possibly porn star wife Yvette (Narelle Johnson). It seems Dominic has had a bit of trouble, possibly involving a murder and Chris is determined to get to the bottom of it. But, Dominic is having none of that, so he tempts Chris by giving him a hint of what happened, then promptly drugs his drink. While in a drug haze, Chris believe he sees a bloodied, half naked woman and attempts to investigate, but blacks out. The next morning it seems he is missing a reel of film, the one with the potentially damaging information. Later, Chris and Sarah continue the interview at Dominic's penthouse apartment, where over the next few days, Chris and Sarah are tormented by Dominic and Yvette, scaring them, drugging them, threatening to release damaging footage of them drugfucked and setting them up for murder. Can Chris and Sarah survive the weekend with their sanity in tact and expose the rich couple wicked games? There's an interesting concept here in amongst a surprising amount of debauchery that is also surprisingly coy, especially during a bizarrely arty lesbian scene. But Death Games blows it with a preposterous final act that is so ridiculous, you don't really care whether Chris and Sarah survive as there's a lot of ridiculous fake outs. Close, but no donuts.

As with all VHS Classics, the quality is not up to DVD standard and Death Games was a bastard to make a copy of. Even then both the image and sound has small issues as in the image is a little fuzzy and the sound has a bit of squeal in it, but the videos are still pretty watchable. Wish this movie would make it to DVD as I'd love to take a ping at a high quality version as I like Jennifer Cluff here and she has a fair bit of nudity in this movie, but sadly, I think this one is a lost cause. Damn it! Also, there's a few 70s and 80s Australian Penthouse Pets in the cast, but the credits are terrible past the main four and I don't really know who's who, so maybe someone can identify the unknown girls below for me, if they go back that far... Particularly the dancing girl, really like her.

Update for 8 April...

How 'bout another new Australian film?

Dead Europe is a drama that follows Issac (Ewen Leslie), a photographer who wants to go to Greece to visit where his parents came from. His father does not want him to go and after a going away party, his father dies in a car accident, possibly by suicide. This slightly changes Issac's plans and he decides to take his father's ashes to spread them in his home village. This is against his mother's blessings and there seems to be a major consternation about Issac going to Greece. He goes to Greece and meets his cousin Glulia (Danae Skiadi from Hardcore, loved watching that ultra-depressing film on SBS back in the day), who offers to take him to his father's village. Before he goes, Issac is interrupted during a gay liasion by Josef (Kodi Smit-McPhee), who has been attacked. He helps him home, but things are strange. Josef says that the woman at his home is not his mother and he wants Issac to take him away from here. But, after going home to get more film, he comes back and they seem to have disappeared. Issac goes to his father's village and finds that his family thinks he is cursed because of something his father did. When he goes to sprinkle his father's ashes, he is warded off doing so. After receiving an email from an old friend of his father's, he goes to Paris to meet him, but it comes increasingly clear that his father's past is going to catch up with him. And this comes to a head when Issac visits his long lost brother Nico (Marton Csokas) in Budapest and sees the shell of a man he has become and Nico tells him the truth of their father and it will shake Issac to his core. Jesus, Australian filmmakers love their depressing stories and Dead Europe is an all-timer of depressing shit happening. Mind you, I do love a depressing film. Based on a novel from the writer of The Slap and reuniting star and director from the similar storied short film Jewboy, Dead Europe is a film that predetermines it's ending and it's just a downward spiral to get there. And a fair bit of the film feels extremely random and possibly with stuff tacked on or possibly taken out to drag the film out to barely 80 minutes. The Paris segment didn't need to be there at all. This film ain't The Slap, that's for sure and is more a depressing diversion than anything substantial.

Update for 2 April...

Hideaways is an Irish fairy tale about James Furlong (Harry Treadaway), a boy that was born with the devastating affliction of when he is feeling threatened, he has causes the death of any living thing within range. This has a horrific toll on his life including causing the death of his mother, father and grandmother and then pretty much everyone at the orphanage he was sent to except for Liam (Thomas Brodie-Sangster). James runs away to the forest, never to been to seen again, until... Years later, Mae-West O'Mara (Rachel Hurd-Wood) is dying from stomach cancer and runs off from the hospital she is staying. During a rainstorm, she takes shelter at a house, which is where James is now living, away from everyone else. They spend some time together and hit it off. With a search party out looking for Mae-West, she returns and is feeling much better. James decides to find Mae-West and be with her, but also at that hospital is Liam, who wants revenge for ruining his life. Can love bring the two together? Will Liam exact revenge? Hideaways is pretty standard stuff about love curing all, but this is still a pretty solid watch nonetheless. The most bizarre thing in this film is Rachel's nippleless breasts. Should get that checked out...

Update for 1 April...

Here we go again... well, I'd like to review The Fall of the Essex Boys, but I honestly can't remember it much more than the basic plot points of every other Essex Boys film as they all seem to blur together, all pretty ordinary. Something about a bunch of small time crooks who get a shot at the big time then get in over their head and eventually get murdered in the middle of nowhere. Oh and their is an undercover cop who has infiltrated the group and possibly set the group up. Also, this is the second Essex Boys film for Kierston Wareing after Bonded By Blood and she got nude in both. Not bad, not bad at all.

I s'pose that they are just going to keep making Essex Boys movies until they get it right. See ya in a couple of years...
