Update for 28 November...
Today, a couple of low budget cheapies from Australia.
Jasper is a low budget thriller set in Melbourne (gotta love those rainy Melbourne streets) that follows retiring private detective Jasper Clay (writer/director Nathan Hill) who gets a call just as he is about to leave the detective business for good. It is from Courtney (Sandy Greenwood), a prostitute who asks him to find her son who has been taken from her. Then, she is kidnapped by two men while Jasper is knocked out. When he wakes, he asks around and finds that Courtney has been involved with Danvers, a man who seems to have his fingers in a lot of pies, including prostitution. While trying to find Danvers and Courtney, Jasper is seemingly seduced by every woman he comes across, which in a way helps him find both Danvers and Courtney. I like to champion low budget films, but I just can't do so with Jasper. The film is so unambitious, basically going from girl to another who just instantly wants to sleep with Jasper, some without even talking to him. Jasper ain't exactly 'King Dick', so not a jot of it seems possible. Best example is Courtney, two minutes after pouring her heart out about her missing kid throws Jasper into the bedroom to have sex with him. Yeah, don't worry about that kid you love, just fuck some guy you barely know. I can forgive terrible acting, low production values etc. but when a film just feels like someone trying to get with as many women as possible without any motivation, it just gets boring. But in another light, 'Good Night' for making a film and getting hot women to slobber over you. Especially Sandy Greenwood, recently seen in Killer Elite (might've overdone the collages of her...).
The Killage is another low budget film, this time a comedy horror parody about a bunch of stereotypes that are all taken to a weekend away by their work so that the next team leader can be found. All starts out as planned, but during a campfire meeting where the participant's suggestions are read out, one note says that 'Everyone is going to die, very creatively'. First, the bimbo cheerleader cops it in the shower, then the stoner gets impaled on his massive bong, while the uptight bitch cops the heel of her shoe in the back of the head. This is going to be a long night, who's going to survive and who's the killer? The hot chick with a secret? The dopey sensitive guy who loves his guitar? The smart guy who might finally get lucky? The 'dyke' who's has feelings for the smart guy? The closeted naked jock? The gay guy who wants the jock? The goth chick? Or the pissed off disabled guy? Gotta say, this film is a helluva lot more fun than Jasper and is actually pretty funny. Never taking itself seriously and filled with many creative and quite ridiculous deaths, THe Killage is well worth a look.

Australian HD Classics for 27 November...
I've been doing some VHS classics recently, how 'bout some on Bluray.
Only a couple of quick updates just for the completist in me. Both films are fairly well known, so no real need to go over them. The Road Warrior still holds up extremely well and all I can think of after a recent rewatching is why don't today's action film look this good. They all look so fake. Time for Hollywood to get off the computers and green screen and smash shit up again.

Redux for 25 November...
Collages and videos from The Wackness are now available here.
Collages and videos from Moving McAllister are now available here.
Another couple of HD redos today. A couple of weeks back I was talking about aspect ratio and the main reason was the videos from Moving McAllister as in the 2:35 aspect ratio, you see more in the spa video. Plus the source is so muddy, I seriously considered not releasing them, but what the hell, I don't think we are going to get any better. Meh...

Australian Classics for 21 November...
For this weeks Classic, let's go low rent, real low rent.
Bloodlust is a 1991 ultra low budget vampire exploitation film, the first film shot on video from co-directors Jon Hewitt (Redball, Acolytes, X) and Richard Wolstencroft (Pearls Before Swine, The Beautiful and the Damned). A group of psychotic vampires Tad, Lear (Jane Stuart Wallace) and Frank (Kelly Chapman) roam Melbourne for their next victims, get bored and decide to robs an illegal casino run by gangster Stieg (Paul Moder). With a stockpile of weapons that could supply an army, they are now the targets of Stieg's crew, a couple of crooked cops and a manic bible thumping preacher Brother Bem (Phil Motherwell), who with his neverending supply of zealots wants to rid the Earth of filth. Oh, it's going to be a sex fuelled, blood soaked fight for survival in Geeksville. Well, it's low budget exploitation, what else would you expect. The filmmakers wanted to make a film that had every type of perversion imaginable and well Bloodlust doesn't die delivering. A stack of fun, completely and utterly ridiculous, lewd, crude and with more squibs of blood used than I've ever seen. Yeah, it's shit and if your not up for it, you won't get it, but if you are, Bloodlust is fantastic low rent shonky fun.
And there's a stack of videos from the extras off the new brilliant special edition DVD, most of which aren't the best quality (it was shot on video), but who cares when there's some extra lesbian action that the directors can't believe they left out of the film. And the stories about the making of the film are well worth listening to. The ones about Kelly Chapman (now an indy film producer including Jucy) are quite enlightening.

Australian VHS Classics for 19 November...
Well, finally, after the bats have cleared the vault, this update which was going to be out last Wednesday, is now available.
Out of the Body is a 1989 Brian Trenchard-Smith directed supernatural crime thriller that follows David Gaze (Mark Hembrow), a university lecturer who would rather dabble in music who starts having disturbing dreams involving the murder of various women. At the same time, someone (or something) is murdering successful women in the exact way that seems to be occurring in his dreams. His girlfriend Neva (Tessa Humphries from the dreadful Cassandra) believes him and thinks that he is astral travelling in his sleep to the murder scenes. David calls the cops to warn them of the next murder, but they think he's a crackpot. Then, newsreader Mary Mason (Mary Regan) seems to be the next victim and he desperately tries to warn her, while looking like a complete lunatic himself. But, lo and behold, she is killed and the police suspect David. But, how can it be him, he's nowhere near the scene of the crime at the time. So, who is the murderer and who's next to be killed and does this make a jot of sense. Oh, my God. Holy shit! Out of the Body is something else altogether. Quite possibly the most laughable film I have ever seen, in fact the entire final act I was gasping at how stupendously awful the film had become. Never mind that the red herrings were painfully obvious or David's lunatic behaviour, nothing upon nothing beats an astral travelling killer. An Astral Travelling Killer!!! I shit you not. Just when I thought Cut had the most ridiculous killer ever (the murderer from a film coming to life), this film manages to top it. Oh BTS, you've topped yourself this time. Absolutely terrible in the best possible way!
To Make A Killing (aka Vicious) is a 1988 violent home invasion thriller following golden boy Damon (Tamblyn Lord, still kicking around) and teenage boy about to start university after receiving very high marks in his exams. Bored during his summer holiday in Harvest Bay, he is startled when his house is broken into by the local hoods led by Terry (Craig Pearce, now the writing partner of Baz Luhrmann and star of film I wish I could get my hands on again Mad Bomber in Love) and his mates Felix and Benny (Kelly Dingwall, 'Dodge' from Home and Away). The hoods back off when they see Damon, but Damon is drawn to then, looking for more in his life than just being smart. So when he spies them going to their next breaking and entering, he decides to join them. When it is busted up by the cops, he jumps in their car. Along the way they pick up some girls while Damon tells them of the big score. Turns out on the girls they picked up is the daughter of the big score, Sondra (Tiffiny Dowe) and after a date, they fall in love. Then, the hoods decide to go for the big score, much to Damon's shock, so he tries to warn the family, but the hoods get their before anything can be done and hold the family and Damon hostage. And then it gets ugly. Co-written by P.J. Hogan (of Muriel's Wedding, My Best Friend's Wedding and the recent Mental, films that are miles away from this one), it's a film that gets better the longer it goes as the first act is pretty boneheaded to the point that I'm surprised the film recovered from it. After that, To Make A Killing turns into a quite depressing and seemingly hopeless little thriller where the boy becomes a man. File this one under 'couldabeen', but not quite. And yes, there's a girl credited as Leather in the film and bizarrely on IMDB, Ajay Rochester from The Biggest Loser, although I'm sure that's a mistake...
The Newman Shame is a 1977 Perth set made-for-TV thriller following John Brandy (George Lazenby) and his girl Ginger (Diane Craig, um, who was hot when she was younger, who knew?) who are back in Perth for the quiet life but Brandy is drawn back into the underworld when a friend, Frank Newman, apparently committed suicide, although his wife thinks otherwise. Possibly because she finds a porno starring her husband, which obviously looks like he's been doubled for the sex stuff. Brandy and against his wishes, Ginger, head into the seedy underworld to find out who made the porno and bribed Newman, starting at a massage parlour, where they are found out, knocked unconscious and left with the body of one of the girls in the porno. Well, it's obviously not them that killed her, but now the plot thickens. Not bad little quickie from the 70s that holds the interest the entire time and Lazenby is good in the lead.
And one final movie, that isn't a genre film, but it's just been sitting around waiting for me to make a quick video from. Tender Hooks is a 1990 slice-of-life drama about a group of no-hopers just trying to get through life as best they can. Petty crook Rex (Nique Needles) shacks up with hairdresser Mitch (Jo Kennedy from Starstruck) and first they become friends, then they become lovers and then he goes to jail and escapes (with only a week to go on his sentence!?!). Also about the people they hang around. Nique Needles basically playing the exact same character from Afraid To Dance and Jo Kennedy continuing to prove how criminally underrated she is. Apart from that, a pretty forgettable film.
Again, as with all VHS Classics, the quality varies. The Newman Shame isn't the best, but it's still viewable, the rest looks pretty good though.

Update for 15 November...
A double banger of Australian films in HD today, both of which feature Bojana Novakovic. And just to add to the comparisons, I saw these two movies in cinemas on the same day...
Not Suitable For Children is a romantic comedy that begins with party boy Jonah (Ryan Kwanten) discovering he has a lump on his testicles. Turns out it's cancer, but it can go away with treatment. He also test his sperm and finds out that once he begins the treatment, he won't be able to father children. Devastated at the thought, he decides to delay treatment a few weeks so that he can find a woman willing to father his child. He first thinks of his ex-girlfriend Ava (Bojana Novakovic) and on-off fling Becky (Kathryn Beck), but that goes badly. Then he goes through his list of women he knows to no avail. His housemate Stevie (Sarah Snook) also helps him find someone at her work, but none of them go well. Stevie, who previously hated children, decides that maybe she might like a child. When the syringe fails before their first attempt, Jonah offers up that they impregnate her the old fashioned way, by having sex. After a slow start, they hit it off and spend the four day ovulation period having copious amounts of sex. And then things develop from there. Yeah, I didn't really get into this film and I don't know why. It's mildly amusing and the leads are all good, maybe I just didn't connect with the story, I dunno. Ah well...
The King Is Dead is a comic thriller from Rolf de Heer, one of my favourite Australian directors, following Max and Therese (Dan Wyllie and Bojana Novakovic), a school teacher and an accountant respectively. The couple move into their new home and see that they have neighbours that couldn't be further apart. On the right, there is Otto and Maria and their young daughter Mirabelle, who they hit it off immediately, including putting a little door in the fence for Mirabelle to visit them. But of the left is the house from hell inhabited by the King (Gary Waddell, perfectly cast), a completely dopey speedfreak who allows the local smackheads walk all over him while doing a spot of drug dealing for the neighbourhood. It begins with the late night to late morning parties that allow for no sleep and moves onto strange anti-social behaviour and loud arguments and eventually breaking into their house and stealing from them. They live with it begrudgingly, but the pressure builds and eventually after another no sleep night, Max and Therese hatch a plan to get the King out the house next door. After an initial failure, they are spurred on to frame him for stealing from them after Mirabelle is scared witless by one of the smackheads. But, the plan is about to have a massive hitch and end in a very unexpected way. Good fun here with it all done very tongue-in-cheek. The third act is pretty ridiculous, but not in a way that detrimental to the film. It just good to have a new film from de Heer as it had been 5 years since his last.

Update for 14 November...
I was going to release three more VHS Classics today, they are all ready to go, but I also have some new HD stuff that I'd like to release over the next few days that will mean something will probably get lost in the crush. So, I'll release them possibly early next week, no real big rush on them.
Bad Karma is a thriller set for the most part on the Gold Coast but starts in Sydney, following coked-up American lowlife Molloy (Ray Liotta) who is asked by his mate Yates (Dominic Purcell) to do a job for him, but he gets wasted and on his way to the crime, he has a heart attack and crashes into a chemist. Meanwhile, Yates is arrested in what looks like a setup. Three years later, Molloy has moved to the Gold Coast, got a good job, is clean and is very much in love with Kelly (Vanessa Gray) and both have plans for better things. Then, Yates turns up and while they are in a convenience store, Yates decides to rob the place and then shoot dead the attendant and a shopper. It also sorta looks like Molloy's in on the robbery and Yates uses this to blackmail Molloy into doing a job with him. Molloy is desperate to get away from Yates, who as we know is seriously unhinged and makes himself welcome into his home and befriends Kelly. After Molloy is exposed to Kelly, he decides that Yates have to go, but this is not going be easy. Stock standard stuff here, nothing to write home about, but not all that terrible either. But, it does make me wonder why Ray Liotta struggles to get a decent role in a big film any more. He was in Goodfellas damnit!

Australian VHS Classics for 13 November...
Time to open the vault again and I've been getting into some 80s Aussie genre lately, so it's time to strip them of the good stuff and release it here. Strangely, tonight's 3 movies all end on a downer...
Strangers is a 1991 noir thriller from the makers of the appalling Ebbtide (they even use the same mansion and Strangers also ends in a similar ambiguous way as Ebbtide) that follows Gary (James Healey), a hotshot stockbroker who meets Anna (Anne Looby, on debut) on a plane flight and they hit it off so well that they have sex. Gary tells Anna that it's a one off thing as he has a lovely wife Rebecca (Melissa Docker) and it seems like that's it. Except Anna is a fruitcake and she loves Gary and wants him all to herself. Anna starts killing people getting in the way of their love including his ex (Mary Regan) and her dad and next in her sights is Rebecca. I didn't expect much from this obvious Fatal Attraction rip-off after Ebbtide, and well the best I can say is that it's better than Ebbtide, but not much better. Basically, it's stock standard stuff and boring at that, well except for a wonderfully batty performance from Anne Looby, whose a whiz with the gardening shears. This is the first time I've seen this film, but I remember when it aired on TV in the 90s, the channel that showed it had a preview of the Anne Looby sex scene in the ad. I'm assuming it was Channel 9 because they loved a bit sleaze in their ads in the 90s.
The Big Hurt is a 1986 Melbourne set 80s kinky noir thriller about freewheeling journalist Price (David Bradshaw, the dulcet voice of Frontline) who has just spent 3 months in Pentridge Prison because he didn't name his source. He heads back to the newspaper he worked for, The Melbourne Star, where the editor gives him a job on the crime beat. His first job is reporting on a girl who seems to have been tortured to death by cigarette burns. The editor wants to spin it as a vice war with prostitutes being killed. That night when he gets home, he finds a mysterious woman has broken into his house. The woman, Lisa Alexander (Lian Lunson and her hair...) wants Price to check out a 'kink' club (gotta love the 80s) run by a shonky character Alderson (Simon Chilvers, another with recognisable voice) that has a back room run by ASIO (Government Spy Agency) that is running bizarre and highly illegal experiments. Price checks it out even though it seem far fetched and doesn't find anything damning. He digs further and finds that Alderson was the benefactor of a research facility that closed when it's chief scientist O'Neill killed himself and his gay lover instead of being disgraced for being gay. But, something doesn't add up and he keeps digging and what he uncovers is something quite shocking and that is also related to the aforementioned 'vice war'. This is one strange long forgotten curio that while not completely successful trying to stuff too much plot in, is at times pretty bonkers but never less than interesting. The ending is so bizarre that I think it's better just to roll with it instead of trying to figure it out. Good fun, but off it's rocker.
Finally, Early Frost is a 1982 potboiler set in Blacktown, a suburb of Sydney where a group of middle aged women are getting bumped off and dragged into their pools (which is rather specific mode of killing). It looks like Val Meadows (Diana McLean) is next as she is electrocuted (um, but her place doesn't have a pool...). She wakes up the next morning and accuses her son Peter (Jon Blake on debut) and they seem to have a loving relationship that can only be fixed by one of them dying. Seems Val is a terrible mother, a bit of a slut and accidentally killed Peter's father during a drunken dispute. Next, a private detective looking into the affairs of those who have died is killed when his car blows up. And there's a photo with the dead women in it that also features Val, yep, she's next, but who is the killer and does anybody really care. Terrible, possibly finished in haste film (it has no credited directed) that I'm not even sure gives away the killer as we never see them do it and I'm assuming the reveal is some scene at the end, which isn't exactly conclusive. In fact, Val does actually die, but this is revealed in a bizarrely comical newspaper article further adding to the finished in haste angle. Val is such a cow of a character that anyone watching the film is probably a suspect. If you don't do it, I will...
Three more VHS classics tomorrow. Also remember, all of the below is taken from a VHS copy of the film, so the quality is below that of a DVD. It's perfectly fine to watch, but I doubt there will be any DVD release of any of these films (although The Big Hurt seems to be available on LaserDisc). Now where's my LaserDisc player...

Update for 11 November...
On The Road, set between 1949-1951, is about wannabe writer Sal Paradise (Sam Riley) whose life is changed forever when with his friend Carlo Marx (Tom Sturridge) he meets Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund), a man who seems to float through life. Dean introduces them to his current squeeze Mary-Lou (Kristen Stewart). Over the next two years, Sal and Dean go on various road trips across America with various people in tow, including Mary-Lou who likes Dean but yearns for more and Ed who has left his young wife and is reluctantly travelling back to her. All the while, Sal and Dean live out of each other's pockets, but where Sal uses his experiences to improve his writing, Dean continues to wander to the detriment of his marriage to Camille (Kirsten Dunst) and the child they have together and eventually everyone else. Tough film to describe offhand as the film is more about the experiences that Sal has with Dean more than any actual plot. And I enjoyed the journey the two went on, even if both paths seemed to come to inevitable conclusions. A solid film with solid performances from the ensemble, including a number of cameos along the way from actors like Viggo Mortensen, Amy Adams, Steve Buscemi, Terrence Howard and Alice Braga.

Redux for 10 November...
Collages and videos from Tormented are now available here.
The relentless pursuit to have everything I've done in HD continues. It feels like I capped Tormented many years ago, but it's only 3 years ago. And I'm sure that the below version isn't from the Australian Bluray, as the Australian version is in the 2.35 aspect ratio, whilst below the videos are in 1.85 aspect ratio. And you're probably saying who cares, but the wider the image, the more you can see from the left and right. In the below videos, doesn't make much of difference, but that's more the way it is show, which in Tormented is pretty poor, the sex scenes are almost indecipherable. I have some redux videos upcoming where part of the image is cut off in the 1.85 aspect ratio and you can't see a bra and panties shot which you can see perfectly in the 2.35 version. Get it right will ya!
And this is where I first saw Tuppence Middleton, in which she has since graduated to this in Cleanskin. Nice!

Update for 8 November...
It's getting hot in here... (cough)
247°F is a survival thriller with a difference. Four young people head off to a cabin by a lake owned by Wade, who is a friend of Ian's (Travis Van Winkle). He brings along his mate Michael, Michael's girlfriend Renee (Christina Ulloa) and her friend Jenna (Scout Taylor-Compton) and they are there to enjoy the weekend. Before going to a party, the four decide to go in the newly finished sauna at the cabin. After a little while, they decide to have one last stint in the sauna before leaving for the party, but by this stage Michael is inebriated and just wants a little action with Renee, but she doesn't want any. While the other three are enjoying the sauna, Michael stumbles around the outside of the sauna, knocking over a ladder before heading off for a snooze. When Renee attempt's to leave the sauna, she pushes door which hits the ladder and jams in against the door, making it impossible for those inside to leave the sauna. As Ian, Jenna and Renee make desperate attempts to get out of the sauna, tensions between the three become strained. And the temperature is rising... A not wholly successful attempt at a different type of survival thriller, falling short mainly for the same reasons these types of films usually do. Characters start doing stupid things or just become plain annoying, plus the fact that getting stuck in a sauna is a whole new level of bad luck. But, it's not entirely bad and then there's two girls in their underwear for the majority of the film. Heh...
As both girls are in their underwear for most of the film, I've had to cut the videos in half, so both girls have a video in the light and in the dark, mainly so I can amp up the light in the dark scenes as it was quite dark.

Update for 6 November...
Um, this... this was unexpected.
Redd Inc. is serial killer horror thriller that begins with the capture of the Head Hunter, Thomas Reddman (Nicholas Hope from Bad Boy Bubby), who goes around lopping the heads off money grubbing high powered executives. He then dies in a fire at the insane asylum that he was housed. The world is safe again for witness Annabelle Hale (Kelly Paterniti), an chronically unemployed woman, although she does moonlight as a webcam skank. One night, Annabelle begins a private webcam session with a creepy man who disguises himself. He creeps her out and she calls it off, but then she is grabbed by a masked man and is made to pass out. When she wakes up, it is in a small office, chained to the desk with six other people. And then out pops Thomas Reddman, who was supposed to be dead. The other people in the room are people involved with his trial including another witness, a psychic who pointed him out, the investigating detective, Reddman's lawyer and another man who has already being put through the ringer. Reddman then gives orders for them to transcribe legal entries while they are allowed three toilet breaks and two social breaks, just like any office. When the already tormented man stabs Reddman with a pencil, Redmann marks him for a fifth time and then promptly cuts his head off with the blade he now has instead of an arm. How are the five remaining people going to get out of this office from hell? There is only one way and considering what's just happened, it's as insane as Reddman. I think I've only described the first 20 minutes of this rather unique and extremely violent film. It's intriguing concept is a grower although in the rush to be a 90 minute film, it seems to have skipped over a fair bit, which almost makes the story run out of steam, but is dragged kicking and screaming along by another sublime performance from Nicholas Hope as the toupee wearing nutcase Thomas 'I'm a regional manager' Reddman. Kelly Paterniti is pretty good to as she desperately tries to get out of the place. And Tom Savini delivers as usual in the effects department. If you're a horror fan, I highly recommend this little doozy of an Australian horror film with one the drawback being everyone putting on the generic American accent. I know why, but it's just offputting.
But the pièce de résistance of this film is the nudity from Kelly Paterniti, which was one great surprise. It was only a month back I was asking to see more from her and well... Anyway, there's an edit of the scene with just the stripping as the original scene is over three minutes and the stripping is only 30 seconds. There's also a deleted scene which shows a little more the first shower scene including some brief nipple patch and breast bounce (sadly not in HD off the Bluray. What the...?). It's all a nice bonus that will make the top ten at the end of the year (shit, if it ain't top 5 there must be some good stuff coming up in the next 2 months).

Update for 5 November...
Haven't done a film from New Zealand in a while, so how 'bout a classic.
The Quiet Earth is a 1985 sci-fi last man on Earth film that begins with Zac (Bruno Lawrence) waking up after an apparently long night to a world where everyone has disappeared. At first, he travels the city looking for someone else, then resigns himself that he may be the only person alive. Then Joanne (Alison Routledge) appears and it seems that he will have female company. That is broken up when they find the aggressive Api (Pete Smith). All the while, Zac, an eminent scientist, who has discovered that the project he was working on caused the mass exodus, is trying to work out why they are still alive and what's next for those left. Haven't seen The Quiet Earth in a while but it still holds together extremely well. Not a lot to the film, but this is a superb film that works without a malevolent force fighting against those left as these films seem to have and is more interested in the intrigue as to why it happen more than how they are going to survived. Well worth a look.

Redux for 1 November...
The Romper Stomper Bluray was released here a few weeks back and I finally decided to buy it as it was pretty cheap. And if there's one thing I am, that's cheap...
Anyway, had a look at the film for the first time since it's initial DVD release in 2003 (when I first capped it, later did a seamless redux in December 2009) and gotta say Romper Stomper holds up really well 20 years after it's cinema release. It's still as intense and full-on as ever and Russell Crowe's intensity dominates the film with Jacqueline McKenzie and the sadly deceased Daniel Pollock giving great support. So, I'm now wondering how director Geoffrey Wright went from this to the steaming pile of shit that is Metal Skin. Hmmm...
And I don't think that sex scene is getting any realer...
