Australian Classics for 30 November...

Starting to get back into the old Australian movies and can't believe I've sat on this one for as long as I have.

Pacific Banana is a 1980 bawdy sex comedy about Martin (Graeme Blundell), a pilot who has demoted after the owner's wife makes a play for him. He gets sent to co-pilot for the dodgy Banana Airlines with lothario pilot Paul (Robin Stewart from Bless This House). Also, thanks to the aforementioned incident and another one with her daughter, Martin has become impotent, which is about to become a major inconvenience. Martin has further problems with the youngest daughter Julia (Helen Hemingway from Patrick) who has fallen for Martin and keeps stowing away when he flies. Also on the flights are Paul's two women, Mandy and Sally (Alyson Best from Harlequin, bizarrely now out on Bluray and well known 70s model Deborah Gray), who are the stewardesses and are long suffering in love with Paul, who sleeps around all the time. Martin's impotency problem must be solved and Candy Bubbles (British model Luan Peters), who runs a local girls club has decided, with the help of her girls, to cure Martin of his problem. It's not going to be easy, but they're going to keep trying until he's cured. But, there's one girl who will solve his impotency are she's currently the bane of his existence... From notorious producer/director John D. Lamond (Nightmares, Fantasm, Felicity, Breakfast in Paris) and written by the writer of Alvin Purple, Pacific Banana was apparently supposed to be a Carry On... style movie, but Lamond was having none of that and directed a movie that's far more interested in seeing naked women than getting a laugh. Oh, sure there's plenty of gags, but they are, for the most part, recycled from other bawdy productions and have become incredibly cringeworthy and possibly already were when the movie was released. The addition of a salacious, know-it-all narrator doesn't help and there's a pie fight scene that would have young children rolling their eyes in embarrassment. Yes, Pacific Banana is a very poor movie, but I can't say it's not a watchable movie because as it plays very light and is jam packed with pretty girls and at 80 minutes it is an easy watch that was probably perfect for the drive-ins back in the day. Both lead women Alyson Best and Deborah Gray seem to have a lot of fun and are under no illusions as to what the movie is trying to achieve. Graeme Blundell is basically replaying Alvin Purple and Robin Stewart is well cast. If you want a good movie, Pacific Banana ain't it. If you want to see naked women romping around and plenty of cheap limp dick jokes, this might be for you.

Sadly, the credits to the movie only list the character names of the main cast, so it's hard to name who all the unknown women are. I think I know who a couple are, but are not 100% certain. Also, I get the feeling that the cast list is in order of appearance which may help out, although there does seem to be a glut of women entering at the same time and that doesn't help.

Update for 27 November...

A few more quick HD updates from recent releases.

Save The Date is a romantic comedy about a group of friends and their own trials in regards to love. Sarah (Lizzy Caplan) is in her first serious relationship and is reluctantly moving in with Kevin (Geoffrey Arend). Not long after, Kevin asks Sarah to marry him at a concert he is playing at and she declines, already reluctant about just moving in with him. Jonathan (Mark Webber), who has had a crush on Sarah and witness the proposal debacle, plucks up the courage to ask Sarah out and things go alright until the relationship hits that point again and Sarah becomes increasingly reluctant. Also, Kevin doesn't take being unceremoniously dumped well. All the while, Sarah's sister Beth (Alison Brie) is getting married to her long term boyfriend Andrew (Martin Starr). Enjoyable little romantic comedy that has a very indie feel that gets a bit tiresome (ugh, that music...), but Save The Date succeeds in spite of that. Lizzy Caplan is always highly watchable, even playing a frustrating commitment-phobe.

Paranoia is a corporate thriller about whiz-kid tech head (Liam Hemsworth, yeah, I'm not buying it...) who runs up a credit card bill on his former employer (Gary Oldman) after he rejects his idea. Turns out his former employer doesn't like being ripped off (fancy that!) and forces him into getting a job at the employer's rival run by the employer's former mentor (Harrison Ford) and stealing the details of his latest product. All the while he falls for Emma (Amber Heard), who maybe the key to getting out of this mess. Utterly predictable movie with both Gary Oldman and Harrison Ford phoning it in. And pretty boy Liam Hemsworth as a hot shot tech head??? Come on...

And Coming & Going is a romantic comedy about an obstetrician (Rhys Darby) who is not good around women, but an accident that leads to him being in a wheelchair for a few weeks leads him to a feisty immigration lawyer (Sasha Alexander) and a date with her, but she only knows him as being in a wheelchair, so he must keep up the charade as it's the best relationship he's had with a woman. Depending on whether you can go with the flimsy central conceit, this film either works or it doesn't. The movie's charming enough, but come on, faking being disabled? That's never going to end well...

Update for 25 November...

A couple of quick series.

Sweet Vengeance is a revenge drama set in old Western time. Sarah and Miguel Ramírez (January Jones and Eduardo Noriega) are a married couple just trying to get by on their small piece of land, but they keep running into problems. The bank keeps taking money from them and their neighbour, the psychotic Prophet Josiah (Jason Isaacs) seems to be killing their livestock. After Miguel confronts Prophet Josiah about his livestock, Prophet Josiah does not take kindly to this and kills Miguel and buries him elsewhere, making it look like Miguel has run off. Prophet Josiah comforts Sarah in his own special way and that is when she decides to get revenge. Meanwhile, a new Sheriff (Ed Harris), a rather eccentric man with a keen eye for detail, literally waltzes into town looking for the killer of two brothers with Prophet Josiah being the prime suspect. When the killing starts, nobody is safe, no matter how good with the gun they are. While Sweet Vengeance is a stock standard revenge drama, what makes it slightly different is the eccentric characters with both Ed Harris and Jason Issacs are quite good in their roles, that difference is about the only thing going for it cos apart from that, you've seen this plot all before.

I Didn't Come Here To Die is a black comedy/horror thriller about a group of trainee camp counsellor who are charged with cleaning up the area for the next camp for a few weeks. Lead by Sophia (Emmy Robbin), it doesn't take long before the group get bored and the strict 'no alcohol' policy is abandoned. That's where the problems start with Miranda (Madi Goff) getting poked in the eye by a low branch with Sophia having to take her to the hospital. The rest of the group continue cleaning up the area, but things go wrong and spin wildly out of control fast and with no way back to civilisation, it's going to be a long wait for Sophia to get back with the car. Not a bad little low budget black comedy horror movie that does it's job neatly even if the movie pushes a supernatural angle that isn't needed. One scene with a chainsaw is a delight and quite ugly at the same time. Worth a look if you into horror movies with a comic twist.

Australian Classics for 22 November...

Haven't capped an Australian movie in a while, so here's one that doesn't even have an Australian actress in it.

Storm Warning is a 2007 thriller where city couple Rob (Robert Taylor) and his French wife Pia (Nadia Farès) go on a boating holiday but get caught up in a storm and have to abandon the boat. After a while, they find an empty house that just happens to be a place where someone seems to be growing dope. When the occupants of the house return, Rob and Pia are greeted by a couple of hillbillies Jimmy (David Lyons) and Brett (Mathew Wilkinson), who treat their visitors in the typical hillbilly way. It becomes clear that Rob and Pia are not wanted, even moreso when Rob's leg is broken. Pia must find a way to get out of this hellhole, but not without a visit to the hillbilly's father Poppy (John Brumpton), who hasn't had a classy woman before... Simple and surprisingly effective little thriller that feels similar to Long Weekend, which funnily enough, the remake of which was made the next year by the same team as this movie. Nadia Farès is very good as the city artist who must do what she can to escape this madness while David Lyons revels in playing a backwater hick. And there's one scene involving a beer bottle and a steel trap that may make you think twice of taking advantage of a woman...

Update for 17 November...

Trap For Cinderella is a thriller that begins with Micky (Tuppence Middleton) being released from hospital after surviving a terrible accident that killed her friend Do (Alexandra Roach). She is also suffering from amnesia and is slowly piece her life back together with her aunt Julia (Kerry Fox). But, things are not as they seem and it becomes clear that something is not right with Micky. Months earlier, Do spots Micky at the bank where she is working, an old friend who she has not seen since they were torn from each other when they were nine years old. They become friends again, but both are now in different worlds. Micky is a social butterfly living off her aunt while Do is a quiet girl who barely makes a living. Micky tells her to quit her job and live with her. When Micky's aunt gets sick, the two girls head over to the French countryside to be close in her last days. Do has become very attached to Micky, which is noticed by Julia, who helps concoct a plan for Do to be much more like Micky. A remake of a French movie I vaguely remember, this is a thriller with too many tricks up its sleeve to the point where the ending isn't all that clear. The movie also makes some giant leaps of faith to be believable which doesn't help. Having said that, Trap For Cinderella is a pretty watchable movie even if it feels more female-friendly with Middleton and Fox both stand-outs, but it's not a movie for the ages.

And there's plenty of nudity from one of my faves, Tuppence Middleton, which is of major interest. Also never seems to wear a bra, so we end up with frames like these where her tops are completely see-through if you're quick enough...

Redux Friday for 15 November...

Today for the redux series we head back to 2005.

Young Adam is a Scottish drama about wannabe writer Joe (Ewan McGregor) who now works on a barge during this stage of his life with Les and Ella (Peter Mullan and Tilda Swinton) and their son. Bored, he decides to seduce the put-upon Ella, who finally relents. Meanwhile, he is carrying on a relationship with Cathy (Emily Mortimer), which is tentative to say the least. One day, Joe and Les find a dead body in the water, who turns out to be Cathy. It seems that Joe may have been involved in some way, but a married lover of Cathy's is charged with murder. As the case unfolds, Joe gets a guilty conscious as it becomes grim for the suspect. Will Joe tell the truth or will he just go on drifting from place to place? A neverendingly grim morality tale that has quite a bit of sex in it, Young Adam is a solid movie with a solid cast of very good actors. But not really a movie you'd recommend to someone looking for a good time, it's nothing but a misery here.

Update for 14 November...

I'd love to go into a big spiel about the movie in this update, but I can't be bothered, so basically Love and Honor (I'm so used to spelling it Honour) is a drama about two army recruits in the Vietnam War who get a week off. One illegally decides to go home to see his girl while his mate follows him. But, everything has changed and his girl is an anti-war hippy. Oh and his mate falls in love with one of girls running an anti-war newsletter. And for an American movie, it stars two Australian actors (Teresa Palmer and Liam Hemsworth), which seems to be a happening more and more. Might have to have a go myself...

Update for 13 November...

Being off elsewhere since the weekend, so here's a few series to get back in the groove, most of which I watched a while ago and have finally gotten around to capping them.

Anyway, The Frozen Ground is based of actual events about a serial killer (played by of all people, John Cusack) in Alaska and how one cop (Nicolas Cage) with the help of a prostitute (Vanessa Hudgens) that escaped the serial killer's clutches, he is finally caught. Bullet To The Head is about a hitman (Sylvester Stallone) who reluctantly teams up with a cop (Sung Kang) to bring down a kingpin while being chased by a seemingly unstoppable hitman (Jason Momoa). Finally, The Liabilty is about a kid (Jack O'Connell), who is asked to do some driving for a hitman (Tim Roth) by his mother's gangster boyfriend (Peter Mullan), but are interrupted while disposing of the body by a woman (Talulah Riley), which results in a cat and mouse chase between the kid, the hitman and the woman. But, everything is not as it seems. None of these genre movies stand out from the pack, but neither are they bad. If I was to recommend one, I'd go with Bullet To The Head, mainly because it's got the feel of an 80s Stallone movie, mind you that's all he seems to be making lately. And it's good to see the great Walter Hill directing again. It's been a while.

Update for 5 November...

Unofficial horror week seems to be spewing into a second week. Maybe just this once.

Thanatomorphose is a Canadian body shock horror movie about a woman (Kayden Rose) who begins to notice strange things happening to her body. She seems to be bruising very easily, her nails seem to be coming off and she is feeling very cold. She is also a highly sexual woman and even as her health deteriorates, her sexual appetite doesn't rescind. Later, it seems like she is decaying, but she isn't interested in seeing a doctor to help her, more interested in getting off and if she can't, the woman is becoming quite violent. Strange movie that gets more and more disturbing the longer it goes. It's a fascinating look at a woman who is physically falling apart, but desperately tries to keep it together by her own self, rejecting all help (rather stupidly it would seem). While not a lot goes on in the movie and the pace is glacial, Thanatomorphose never feels boring and is well worth a look if you can stomach watching someone decay very graphically.

And Kayden Rose spends an abundant amount of time very naked in this movie, but that nudity gets uglier by the minute. I highly recommend that last video, full of decaying effects and maggots...

Update for 2 November...

Well, it's redux time and with it being unofficial horror week, I've decided to delve right back in the archives with these two movies, Wishmaster 3 and 4, both first capped about 10 years ago. Not really a fan of the Wishmaster series and the movies are all pretty much the same, save for a more sexual angle in the 4th movie and no complaints there with Tara Spencer-Nairn looking pretty damn fine.

Got these updates from a Web Download, so while the quality is perfectly fine, it's not the usual high quality HD off the Bluray. But, it's still pretty damn good.
