Update for 30 July...

Cherry. (with a full stop) begins with two friends at a bar, Brian, but mainly called by his last name Cherry (David Crane) and Sam (Rey Valentin) talking about how the lacking in confidence Cherry can never get the girl. At the bar is Jules (Lili Bordán), the type of girl who you would assume who go for Sam, but with Cherry bemoaning that he can never get a girl like that, Sam decides to chat Jules up for him. Jules goes with and Cherry and her end up having a good time and a relationship begins. Cherry is happy he finally got the girl, but instead of being happy for him, Sam is insanely jealous. Sam is also starting up a new business as a party planner and Cherry convinces him to hire the unemployed Jules as a hostess and Sam sees this as his opportunity to seduce Jules away from Cherry and they begin an affair. Jules is conflicted as she really likes Cherry, but the pull of Sam is overwhelming and she eventually dumps him for Sam. Cherry cannot handle this and withdraws from the world after failing again. 6 months later, Cherry hasn't moved on when Jules tells him that she and Sam have hooked up. Cherry goes ballistic over this and with the help of a nutjob at the bar, comes up with a revenge plan with devastating consequences. Brutally honest movie with a gut punch of an ending that I was quite surprised by how much I ended up liking it. There aren't any likable characters in the movie although there is some sympathy for Cherry and his plight, but what he does is truly vile and quite shocking for someone who was previously cowardly. Well worth a look if you don't like fairytales with happy endings, but if you do, stay away.

This update has been capped from a HD iTunes video file, so while it's perfectly fine to view, the quality isn't near that of Bluray releases. The videos are a bit soft and suffer from the issues of a lower bitrate that sometimes happen on iTunes videos, but that's how they look on the original source, so there's not a lot I can do. The collages actually turned out pretty damn well considering although any lighter and the issues would be clear. I doubt there will be any Bluray release of the movie and I originally watched it from a local DVD until I found this copy while browsing.

Update for 28 July...

A couple of quick updates today, one from the Scottish movie Not Another Happy Ending about an author (Karen Gillan) who frustrates her publisher as she gets stuck on the ending to her second novel while her pompous boyfriend writes the screenplay to her first book. Exciting stuff, except for Karen Gillan brief (and sort of unnecessary) nude scene. The other movie in the update, Joyride 3, on the other hand is... Naaah... it's a completely derivative straight-to-DVD horror movie right down to the crazy guy who warns them about going down that road. Let's face it, these movies are all about the kills and well there's not much you can do on the road that hasn't been done in the second movie or even the much more polite first movie or for that matter any horror movie set on the road. Some good cheap nudity though, and that's what we're here for.

It's redux time again, this time concentrating on the Boogeyman series. I gotta admit, I was never high on the Boogeyman films, it's based on a silly concept and the first movie has that ridiculous changing rooms aspect which ruins any suspense for the sake of some cheap scares. It doesn't help that it's very similar to the terrible movie They, including having some of the same problems. I had never seen Boogeyman 2 before this update and it feels like a completely different movie. The Boogeyman concept is sort of there, but there's a helluva lot of self-harm going on and there's a nastiness to it that was never present in the first movie. In fact, some of it is absolutely disgusting particularly the stuff happening to Mae Whitman's character. One scene where she's harms herself is just brushed off as let her do her own thing, which is quite disturbing. Something is kinda off with Boogeyman 2, like it was made by people seeing how much they could get away with without actually going into the area of hardcore violence. And the twist in the end is just stupid, which seems to be a common theme in all three movies. Bafflingly with Boogeyman 2 going straight-to-DVD, another straight-to-DVD sequel was made in Bulgaria, but set in an American university where the daughter of Tobin Bell's character from the second movie reads his diaries and starts believing, gets dragged under the bed and disappears, then reappears a couple of scenes later as if that didn't happen before topping herself. Hmm... did they just not care about this glaring error? Boogeyman 3 tends to be more like the first movie and has a pretty good lead in Erin Cahill, who needs to be in better stuff, but inevitably it's all a bit ho-hum.

Here's some dumbarse trivia from the Boogeyman movies I noticed. Lucy Lawless is in the first movie and her Xena offsider Renée O'Connor is in the second movie. I dunno much about the Xena series, but maybe Kevin Sorbo could've turned up in the third movie, maybe as the psychiatrist character, it was there to happen. Also, Barry Watson is in the first movie, while David Gallagher, who played his brother in the TV show 7th Heaven is in the second movie. Maybe one of the sisters could've been slaughtered in the third. I knew I hated that third movie for a reason, no continuance...

Update for 24 July...

All about Teresa Palmer today with a new movie and a short film.

Parts Per Billion is a drama set as America is about to be engulf by a virus from a biological war with the Middle East, that will kill most of the remaining people. Erik and Anna (Penn Badgley and Teresa Palmer) are a young couple who are spending the time getting close to one another. Erik's mother and father, Esther and Andy (Gena Rowlands and Frank Langella) are desperately trying to survive this outbreak by stocking up on oxygen and drugs from the abandoned hospitals while Andy worries over his part in the crisis. His lawyer and her husband, Mia and Len (Rosario Dawson and Josh Hartnett) are spending the final hours hoping to survive it while making death plans if things fail. Ah, my favourite genre, interconnected ensemble drama... I mean, I really don't like these movies, way too much leaps of faith required to make them work. Parts Per Billion has a go at being deep and meaningful and there are moments that work, mostly around Andy's crisis of conscience, but there are times that the movie is utterly frustrating, mostly when the focus is on Mia and Len who should just go outside and breathe in pure death. I've seen way worse, but I was never going to like this movie given this genre.

And quickly, Bear is short film from Nash Edgerton, brother of Joel and director of The Square where he plays an annoying boyfriend who has a surprise from his frustrated girlfriend (Teresa Palmer), but it goes horribly wrong for the both of them. Which is basically the exact plot of Edgerton's previous short Spider, right down to his comeuppance. Not to say that both Bear and Spider aren't good for a laugh and Bear has some brief sexy action from Teresa, but they are both pretty much the same movie. While the movie is in 1080HD, I got it from YouTube, so the quality is a little below even iTunes HD movies. Perfectly watchable, but closer inspection it doesn't warrant. I made a lengthy collage, which is probably an indulgence, but a bit of fun anyway.

Update for 21 July...

Proxy is a drama where Esther (Alexia Rasmussen) is almost at full term of her pregnancy when she is attacked and her unborn child is killed in a callous and targeted attack. As a part of her recovery, she goes to a support where she meets Melanie (Alexa Havins), a woman who has just lost her child. The get along well and plan to get together again, but Melanie doesn't turn up to the next meeting, which disappoints Esther until she accidentally spies her at the shop, where Melanie screams about losing her child. What transpires confuses Esther, but also intrigues her. She doesn't know what to make of it, but continues on meeting her. Meanwhile, she get together with her girlfriend Anika (Kristina Klebe). But, things aren't right in Esther world and this will lead to an extremely tragic event. And that's just half the movie which goes a good two hours and is something quite out there to say the least. Not a lot of sane things go on in this movie, but it is never less than intriguing and is very engrossing in parts. It's not without a few issues (the most fake pregnant belly you're likely to see is a glaring one), but this is one helluva movie that hooked me in nice and good.

Update for 17 July...

Squatters is a drama about two homeless kids in love, Jonas and Kelly (Thomas Dekker and Gabriella Wilde from Endless Love), who luck into illegally staying in the house of David and Evelyn (Richard Dreyfuss and Lolita Davidovich), who have gone on holiday and make themselves at home. This includes stealing and selling off some of their more expensive items, while Kelly looks at some old home movies and finds a family is going through a tough period thanks to the death of their daughter. David, Evelyn and their son Michael (Luke Grimes) come home early, catching Kelly unawares and she barely gets out without being found. The family call the police, but a chance meeting meeting between Michael and Kelly and the greed of Jonas will set this story on a tragic path. Interesting tale that isn't half bad and keeps interest until the end, but is let down by unnecessary overstylised touches that don't fit the movie and a stealing plot that takes the movie into well worn territory. But, the rest works well, even the love story which while a little rushed, gives the movie a surprisingly satisfying ending. Definitely worth a look.

Update for 16 July...

Heh, on this day 4 years ago I capped Christina Ricci from After.Life. Today, I cap another movie of hers, an Australian movie bizarrely.

Around The Block is a drama where Dino (Christina Ricci) takes a job at a high school in Redfern, teaching those most at risk. For the year 11 class, she decides to put on the play of Hamlet. She notices that one student, Liam (Hunter Page-Lochard), an indigenous boy she filmed dancing on the street earlier, is peering into class, but runs off before she can talk to him. Later, she catches up with Liam and convinces him to audition, to which he ends up getting the lead. But, Liam has his own problems. His father (Matt Nable) is in jail, his brother (Mark Coles Smith) wants to remain loyal to his father and plans to kill the corrupt cop that put him in jail and his mother (Ursula Yovich) struggles with her two boys. Liam's brother wants him to help in killing the cop, but he is reluctant and wants to concentrate on the play. And there's more at stake when the local member of parliament has decided to watch the play. Can Dino convince Liam to take the right path? Messy movie that works far better when concentrating on the plight of Liam and also the play than Dino's private life which bizarrely goes from her getting married to a man to having a lesbian fling (Ruby Rose in a cameo), to wanting to get back with a former girlfriend with only the slightest, almost unrecognisable hint of her lesbian tendencies beforehand. It really doesn't fit with the rest of the movie, not that I'm complaining (see below), but it does drag the movie off the rails. Apart from that, the movie is affable enough to pass and Ricci makes a good fist of her American in an Australian hot spot character, convincing enough as goes around Redfern. And the brothers are both quite good.

Update for 15 July...

Missed this when it was released, so here goes.

Sanctum is a thriller where a group of cave explorers are joined by the man funding the exploration, Carl Hurley (Ioan Gruffudd), his girlfriend Victoria (Alice Parkinson) and Josh (Rhys Wakefield), who is the son of lead explorer Frank (Richard Roxburgh). After the death of a diver, a quick burst of rain floods the only exit out of the cave, so a change of plans is needed. The plan that is made forces the explorers to test their very limits and one by one, members of the crew die. With no rescue crews coming for them can any of them survive and escape the cave? Simple concept that plays like a horror movie, casually killing off members of the team like a stalking killer. Roxburgh's character is so harsh, that when he's not caring about people dying, he's finishing them off himself. Surely he'd be up on charges or something? The movie's OK, but the ending is seriously forced and marks the movie down a few points. But, there's some impressive cave action nonetheless.

That time of the week again with this week's update being put on ice for over two years mainly because I thought there might be a better version coming out (doesn't look like it), so this is from some Italian Bluray, well, I assume that as the video defaults to Italian, but don't worry, there's the original audio. I wanted to be able to make that dark water nude scene not so dark, I think I've done that, but it's a tough scene to cap because it's dark and there's a lot of movement and this Bluray isn't the greatest going around. It's better than a web download usually is and is perfectly fine to watch, but it still could be better.

Update for 10 July...

Free Ride is a drama set in Florida in the 1970s where Christina (Anna Paquin) escapes from her latest abusive boyfriend with her two daughters MJ (Liana Liberato) and Shell. In Florida, she is set up with a cleaning job by her friend Sandy (Drea de Matteo), but the cleaning job is just a test, as she is cleaning the house of a local drug dealer. Sandy introduces Christina to Ray (Cam Gigandet), who runs a marijuana trafficking syndicate via boat and after gaining his trust, takes her along on the boat trips. He then sets her up in a house where the drugs are stored. Everything is going fine, except the cops are right on everyone's tail and her self-destructive friend Rain (Brit Morgan) puts MJ in hospital after a car accident. OK movie that's pretty watchable but never really reaches for any great heights. I mean, it's a movie about a low rung marijuana operation, not about a cartel and ends up being more a family drama anyway. Also can't believe that Anna Paquin is playing a character that is old enough to have a teenage daughter. Must've had her real young. Has time really flown that fast?

Update for 8 July...

Very Good Girls is a drama about Lilly (Dakota Fanning) and Gerry (Elizabeth Olsen), two best friends who are having one last summer together before going to college. Both girls have also made a pact to lose their virginity before the summer is over. One day at the beach, the girls bump into David (Boyd Holbrook), who is curt to them, but ends up falling for the two girls. Lilly falls for David hard and loses her virginity while Gerry talks about her experiences with David to Lilly. Meanwhile, Lilly's family is falling apart thanks to her dad (Clark Gregg) admitting to having an affair with one of his patients. Lilly's mother (Ellen Barkin) takes it hard and becomes depressed. Also, Lilly's boss (Peter Sarsgaard) really wants her. Lilly and David carry on their relationship behind Gerry's back until Gerry's father (Richard Dreyfuss) dies and leads to a series of events that will cause a fracture in not only their relationship, but with Lilly and Gerry's friendship. A not bad little movie that starts off quite well, but when Lilly's character goes through a change, man, she becomes so moody that it becomes harder to watch. Having said that, Dakota Fanning is excellent and drags this movie up to a decent level. But, her character, argggh...

This was taken from a HD download from iTunes, so the quality is a little down, but still perfectly fine. It doesn't help that there are a number of dark scenes below that are hard to make out. I did what I could, but they were mighty dark. And sadly, that scene where Dakota shows her bum she was actually wearing bikini bottoms and it was digitally removed later as she said so in some interview. Shame, but we can always dream...

Update for 7 July...

Assassins Tale (shouldn't it be Assassin's Tale?) is a drama about a group of low level assassins working in Los Angeles when things go shit when new hit is set up. Three lead assassins, Roman (Michael Beach), Grace (Anna Silk) and Anthony (Guy Garner) who each have their own demons are called in by middle man agent Woody to kill the son of a mob boss who is in line for an inheritance after this mob boss, Clarence, was killed by Anthony and a Hollywood producer who's brother was murdered at the order Clarence. Meanwhile, Jason (Rob Roy Fitzgerald), a wannabe big player comes to town to find Clarence with the help of money man Johnny Solo (Gary Poux). While Jason and Solo look for Clarence and eventually his killer, the three assassins cross each other's paths and talk about their problems while they find the hit. And all this is been told by Johnny Solo to a reporter because there's money in it and that's all Solo cares about. Owing one helluva debt to Jules and Vincent from Pulp Fiction, Assassins Tale is a strange brew that isn't really a thriller as it's a very reflective and downbeat movie. It attempts to achieve the sort of cool that is elicited in that Pulp Fiction story, but is far too in love with it's own idea of conflicted assassins who don't want to do the work any more. Assassins Tale isn't a bad movie by any stretch, just one that needs to break the shackles it's placed on itself and stop being so damn serious.

Redux for 5 July...

Another redux series, this time from the 2001 movie David Lynch epic baffler Mulholland Drive that I would've written a synopsis of, but I don't fully understand it, even after about 4 or 5 viewings. But, does anyone really? It's such a fascinating and mesmerising puzzle that it doesn't really matter that you can't make sense of it. I would've loved to have seen it as the television series it initially was going to be, but then we wouldn't have had all the lesbian and nude gear that was added later for the movie. Ah, such conflicting thoughts.

I wonder if there ever was a version of Mulholland Drive that had the unblurred genitals of Laura Harring during that scene. I saw the movie in cinemas, but can't remember whether or not there was the blurring. I know there's never been a copy to rent/own that has never been blurred, David Lynch made sure of that, but did it ever? It doesn't help that the scene is also very dark and I've had a few attempts to lighten it adequately and I think I have for the video, but for the caps, it's just too dark and lightening it makes it as pixelated as her genitals.

Redux for 4 July...

It's that time of the week again. Don't usually do reviews of redux series, mainly because I've probably already done one, but today's update is from over 10 years ago, so I'll give it a go.

Lost and Delirious is a 2001 lesbian drama set in a boarding school where Mary (Mischa Barton) is forced to attend by her hated stepmother. She is set up in a room with two older girls Paulie and Tori (Piper Perabo and Jessica Paré), who Mary observes to be unusually close. Well, it turns out that they are secret lovers, which Mary comes to terms with while becoming friendlier with the pair. Suffering from homesickness, Mary decides to combat this by doing some gardening with the school gardener (Graham Greene). One day after a boisterous night, a group of younger girls headed by Tori's sister Allison (a quite young Revenge star Emily VanCamp), burst into their room to wake them up as is their routine, but this day, Paulie and Tori are both naked and sharing a bed which shocks Allison and starts a series of events that begins with Tori rejecting Paulie and beginning a relationship with a boy from the adjoining school. Paulie does not take this well a begins to act irrationally which alarms the teachers and may end in tragedy. A quite good movie with very good performance particularly from Piper Perabo and with Mischa Barton showing some genuine promise, which she has failed to live up to at this date, which is a shame. This is a well told story that ends in a surprisingly hopeful way for something that gets quite depressing in the final act.

Update for 3 July...

A quick series today.

The Republic of Two is a drama the follows the ending of the long-term relationship between Tim and Caroline (Brent Bailey and Janet Montgomery). After being together for 5 years, things are starting to slow down just as Tim is about to become a doctor. Caroline is going nowhere in her job and having mood swings causing her to seriously think about moving back home, but Tim persuades her to stay which pays off as she finally gets a promotion at work. But, the relationship doesn't improve and with the pressure now on Tim to get a place to do get a doctor's residency placing, can there's relationship go the distance. An OK movie which is driven by the leads, who are both very good.

Update for 1 July...

Tracks is a true life drama about Robyn Davidson (Mia Wasikowska), a woman who is inspired by her dead father to go on an expedition across the Northern Australian deserts. She spends a number of months learning how to act around, train and use camels so that she can take 3 camels on the journey with her. Low on money, she writes to National Geographic magazine and gets sponsored in return for a photographer Rick Smolan (Adam Driver) to take photos of her trip and various intervals. Along her journey, she will spend most of her time fighting the demons of being alone in the desert while getting some help from an Aboriginal elder and maybe she might just complete her objective. Interesting look at a bizarre journey that doesn't seem to have a motivation apart from something that was personal to Robyn, which I suppose is motivation enough. Not a lot happens over the journey, well, it is over the nothingness of the desert, but enough drama is wrung out of Robyn's brusque personality and her persistence to complete the journey, that it holds interest for the entire movie. And the camel training scenes are great to watch. It's a fascinating journey, but I think that if more was put into her motivation for making such a bizarre journey and what she got out it, Tracks would be a more complete movie.
