Update for 24 March...

How To Plan An Orgy In A Small Town is a Canadian comedy about Cassie Cranston (Jewel Staite), who left her small town after a horrendous night of being slut-shamed and to run away from her famous book writing mother, now has to come back home for her mother's funeral. Now a successful columnist who wrote a famous column that bashed her home town, Cassie is reluctant to return home to say the least. First, she needs the help of a lawyer for finishing up her mother's affair and it turns out to be Adam (Ennis Esmer), the boy who left her high and dry that fateful night, who is now married to Heather (Lauren Lee Smith), the main protagonist behind the slut-shaming. She also catches up with her only friend in town Alice (Katharine Isabelle) who is in the middle of a messy divorce with local real estate agent Bruce (Mark O'Brien). After the funeral, Cassie jokingly makes a comment about having an orgy to Heather, but after receiving the news that Adam is 'shooting blanks', Heather warms to idea of having an orgy and recruits the 'sexually experienced' Cassie to plan the orgy, but not take part, which she reluctantly accepts as this could be good fodder for a book she is struggling to write. Just one problem, Cassie has lied about her sexual experience and is actually a virgin, which she confides in Alice who helps her set up the orgy. The first orgy, featuring Heather, Adam, Alice, Bruce and Chester, who runs walking tours based on Cassie's mother's book, is an absolute disaster. Bruce recruits his co-worker Spencer (James McGowan) for the next orgy, plus a couple on the verge of having a baby and unsurprisingly, the second orgy is a disaster. It then comes out that Cassie is a fraud and the next attempt at the orgy is called off until Heather, desperate to get pregnant, hatches a plan to get it going again at Cassie's next door neighbour/town loser, Seth's (Kristian Bruun) house, excluding Adam. Cassie decides to leave town dejected without having written anything for her overdue book and with no money from her mother's will, but all may not be lost and there may also be a successful orgy, just not in the way they were expecting. OK comedy with some good laughs, but nothing you haven't seen before, especially if you've seen the similar A Good Old Fashioned Orgy. Basically, the orgy idea doesn't work until everyone's at their lowest ebb and ends in people pairing in either expected or unexpected way. Worth a look if you're into the now 'rare as hen's teeth' sex comedy genre. I wish these orgy movies would have more nudity, seems to be an oversight, but there's some nice brief stuff and probably the most we've ever seen of Jewel and Katharine.

Australian Classics for 22 March...

Another Australian Classics update today featuring a couple of obscure 90s genre movies.

Point Of No Return is a 1994 thriller where former military man Grady (Marcus Graham), now in jail, attends the funeral of his brother and on the way back home, escapes custody and attempts to make sense of his brother's murder. His first stop is his old flame Kate (Nikki Coghill), who had moved onto his brother after Grady was jailed and gets her to reluctantly tag along as he heads to his brother's house. At the house, he finds Frank (John Arnold), who is ransacking the house looking for something. It turns out that Frank is looking for triggers for nuclear weapons that Grady's brother was flogging off to the Russian mafia. While searching the house, Grady finds a zone activated hidden camera which captures of all things, Grady's brother's death at the hands of North Korean 'businessmen' who also seem to be after the triggers. While trying to figure out what to do next, a delivery man arrives with a box with the triggers. Frank also arrives back at the house with the North Koreans and they want those triggers real bad. With the cops closing in on Grady, he might just get out of this mess alive. Efficient thriller, that about the best thing I can say about the movie because the plot is totally ludicrous. Spends the second and third act at Grady's brother's house which really shows how low budget it is although Marcus Graham playing his non-twin brother with a dodgy wig and moustache does it better. It's not a bad movie, just one that wallows with very low intentions. Love that I found this DVD, which is OK quality for a barely seen movie (and one not available on DVD in Australia) and it ends with a menu that straight from a DVD recorder as if it was recorded off of that. From an actual distributor, this is pretty low rent... Better than not being available anywhere I s'pose.

Tunnel Vision is a 1994 serial killer thriller where maverick cop Frank (Robert Reynolds) and his loyal partner Kelly (Patsy Kensit, interesting get for an Australian movie) are looking into a killer who is painting his victims on canvas before murdering them. Meanwhile, Frank is having issues with his advertising project manager wife Helena (Rebecca Rigg), who he is convinced is having an affair with her co-worker David (David Woodley). After busting up a robbery where he shoots the robber, Frank is on his last chance. As the bodies pile up, an art dealer named Breslin (Justin Monjo) becomes a prime suspect. Frank is then replaced on the case by Steve (Gary Day), which sets something off in Frank, oh an finding Helena having dinner with David. Frank completely loses it but he still wants Helena, who actually isn't having an affair, it's just Frank jumping to conclusions. Meanwhile, there's a killer to catch and Kelly thinks she has solved it, but there's one last twist that will make finding a serial killer irrelevant. Baffling movie where the main serial killer plot is a total red herring to the real plot of who really wants to fuck Helena, which turns out to be pretty much anyone and who wouldn't when it's the gorgeous Rebecca Rigg we are talking about. The movie practically abandons the serial killer plot as Frank loses his shit over the smallest things without doing the slightest investigating. No wonder he's a maverick cop who doesn't play by the rules because if it did, he'd probably find out who the killer is instead of who wants his wife. While there's a neat twist at the end involving who that is, it actually co-opts the serial killer who's lying in wait. I've never seen anything like it, it's so bizarre. And the DVD for this movie was on the only double-sided DVD I've ever seen that I found in the bargain bin at JB Hi-Fi about 12 or so years ago. There some British movie I've never watched on the other side (I should look, it might have something good in it...). Plus the sound mix of this movie is terrible, with so much fiddling around just to hear the actors speak. Every other sound was fine. It seems to be fine on the videos too, but it took a bit of mucking about to get that right.

Australian Classics for 21 March...

I haven't done an Australian Classics for, OK, a few weeks, anyway here's a couple of 80s martial arts movies made in Perth.

Day Of The Panther is 1988 martial arts action movie where Jason Blade (Edward John Stazak) trains in Hong Kong at the elite Panther School of martial arts with his mentor William Anderson (John Stanton) and Anderson's daughter Linda (Linda Megier). Back in Australia, Linda is working undercover trying to take down local kingpin Damien Zukor (Michael Carman) and in the process is murdered by his right hand man Baxter (Jim Richards). When Jason arrives back in Australia, he is told of the Linda's death and meets Anderson's niece Gemma (Paris Jefferson). He decides to go after Zukor by getting a job with him and getting enough evidence to take Zukor down. At the same time, Zukor sets up a fight between the Blade and Baxter to where he rigs the odds so that he can win a lot of money when Blade takes a dive. Then Baxter finds out that Blade is friends with Anderson and is working to take he and Zukor down, so Baxter sets about destroying Blade and the Anderson family. Fairly basic film, similar to director Brian Trenchard-Smith's 1975 cult classic The Man From Hong Kong, that survives by its action because the rest is pretty forgettable. It's also obvious that the men who played Blade and Baxter, who were not actors, were dubbed as their voices are clearly off. Let's face it, these movies were only made for the pure entertainment value of martial arts and on that front, it's fine, but if you're looking for more, look elsewhere.

Strike Of The Panther is the 1988 follow-up with Baxter in jail and Blade setting up a local special branch and also continues a relationship with Gemma. Everything's great until Baxter escapes from jail, sets up death trap in a factory, then gets a couple of thugs to kidnap Gemma, who also run down Anderson in their getaway. Holed up in a factory with Gemma and numerous ninjas, Baxter waits for Blade so that he can get his revenge. With the help of psychiatrist/negotiator Lucy Andrews (Rowena Wallace), Blade attempts to save Gemma and finish Baxter for good. That's it for plot, it's an 80 minute movie with a 10 minute recap of the first movie. Again, it's all about the action and that's great, but it also goes for more laughs, some of which are actually funny. But there's one aspect of this movie that's so terrible, it really needs to be seen to be believed. When Anderson has his accident, he gains psychic powers and helps guide Blade to victory, geez, it's embarrassing bad. It's a movie series that is already pretty bad, it doesn't need an incredibly lame plot device to make it that much worse. But I s'pose it needed to pad out it's incredibly short running time somehow.

Update for 18 March...

The Editor is a giallo thriller parody about film editor Rey Ciso (Adam Brooks) who has wooden fingers on one hand after an accident, is working on the latest 'masterpiece' from the 'great' director Francesco Mancini (Kevin Anderson) alongside a junior editor Bella (Samantha Hill). When the movie's star Claudio (Brett Donahue) and his co-star lover Veronica (Tristan Risk) are brutally murdered on set and are found by Margarit (Sheila Campbell), she suffers hysterical blindness and her husband, the detective Peter Porfiry (Matthew Kennedy), is called in to solve the case. Rey looks the likely suspect and when the bodies pile up with their fingers chopped off, it's looking more and more likely to him. He is getting no support from his wife, finished actress Josephine Jardin (Paz de la Huerta), who hates Rey and will do anything to get back to her former glory or just spite Rey, particularly after being fired from the movie. With the detective closing in, the new star Cal Konitz (Conor Sweeney) vengeful at been cut out of the movie and an increasingly unstable wife and self, can Rey survive long enough to find out who the real killer is. Silly but pretty fun movie playing off numerous giallo clichés and the B-movie aesthetic in general. So it's dubbed soundtracks, plenty of naked women, bizarre pieces of acting, extreme violence with poorly done violent special effects, cheesy killers, a 70s sensibility and an overbearing score. Everyone seems to be in on the joke too, probably none more than Paz de la Huerta, who's perfectly cast and Rey's unstable wife, but the makers of the movie who are also the stars, are also having a blast. While it is in no way a great movie and if you're not in the mood for a silly movie, you'll hate it, but The Editor is a fun time and nothing more.

Update for 14 March...

Bare is a drama about Sarah (Dianna Agron) who lives in a small town and is going nowhere fast. She has a boyfriend Haden (Chris Zylka) who she doesn't like and she has just been fired from her supermarket job. At her father's abandoned antique store that is up for sale, Sarah finds a drifter, Pepper (Paz de la Huerta), sleeping there but instead of kicking her out, she becomes intrigued by her and they become friends. Sarah is about to start a new job at a diner, but Pepper gets her interested in working at the local strip club. After a clumsy start, she begins to make some decent money and also begins a relationship with Pepper. Things are finally looking up and she finally has a chance to leave her dead end town, but her secret life is about to catch up with her. Stock standard stuck in a small town drama, nothing really to add to the genre plus you get the pleasure of watching another movie where the meaning of life can be found at a strip club. We'll never be done with these movies and we all should be thankful for this, no matter their quality.

Redux Friday for 11 March...

Being all new stuff for a while, but for today I have a couple of redux series. Capped 100 Women back in 2002, which makes it one of the very early series I capped. Rewatching the movie though, I became increasingly frustrated with it's premise as some nice guy who has no luck with women all of a sudden has the affection of two gorgeous women and he has to choose one, except one of the women decides that she will let him be with the other one instead of ruining their friendship. Ugh, really... There's other obnoxious things going on throughout the movie, which makes me wonder how I sat through it back in 2002. Maybe I've changed, yeah probably not. There's a scene below of a girl in the shower behind distorted shower glass who I cannot make out who it is. According to my original caps I thought it was Jennifer Morrison, but on rewatch it wouldn't make sense with the plot. Maybe Erinn Bartlett, they have similar bodies, could be anyone, the movie is called 100 Women. Arrrgh, I can't tell, so I've left it unknown. Probably should recap its predecessor 100 Girls at some stage.

Update for 9 March...

The Unwanted is a drama where Carmilla (Christen Orr) lands on the doorstep of father Troy (William Katt) and his daughter Laura (Hannah Fierman) asking questions about the mother she never knew who apparently stayed at in the trailer on their land. Troy tells her that he has never heard of, but that is most definitely not true. While Carmilla waits for information about her mother's death, Laura decides to befriend Carmilla, much to the chagrin of her father who wants nothing to do with Carmilla, but he allows it as long as she believes his lies about Carmilla's mother. But, Laura works out that her now deceased mother had a relationship with Carmilla's mother and this leads to her pursuing Carmilla, but their relationship is unconventional, almost vampiric. As Laura and Carmilla become very close, Troy becomes more unhinged, spinning more lies about Carmilla's mother and attempting to find out more about their relationship and Troy will do anything to keep his daughter to himself. OK drama that strangely minimises the vampire angle for some reason and turns it into a bizarre lust for blood. But apart from that, the movie is interesting enough to get by plus it has a bit of soft lesbian action which helps keep interest.

Update for 7 March...

Goddess Of Love is a psychological horror drama where Venus (Alexis Kendra), a struggling Los Angeles stripper is given advice for better extracting money from men, but the first man she entangles is Brian (Woody Naismith), an Australian photographer who is attracted to Venus because she looks exactly like his dead wife. They strike up a relationship and things are going well until two months into the relationship when Venus begins to notice something off in Brian. When looking at Brian's photographs she spies one of the models, Christine (Elizabeth Sandy), a former flame of Brian's in a shot that he is particularly happy with and Venus becomes more suspicious. One night, she follows Brian and spies him having dinner with Christine. Well, Venus loses it and Brian decides to call off their relationship. Venus is convinced he can get Brian back and decides to cook him dinner, only to spy him having sex with Christine. Christine brings back Venus's things to her apartment and they tussle with Christine winding Venus. This sets off a tit for tat with Venus becoming more and more delusional and violent, leading to tragedy. Or does it... A passion project for Alexis Kendra (formerly Alexis Peters who seems to have changed her name for this movie) who co-wrote, produced and is very much front and centre of the movie. Venus is a mess, chain-smoking throughout, which is something very different for a modern movie considering smoking is basically banned from American movies, spitting numerous times (at least 6 from a quick count), constantly in a daze which leads to erratic behaviour that is usually soothed by smoking pot, which also happens frequently. And Kendra lives and breathes the role, it's just a shame that the movie is all tricks and very little to back it up. You know a twist is coming, you're just waiting for it happen. The twist isn't really worth the journey and to be honest, the movie would've played better if it didn't have the twist. It renders a fair portion of the movie null and void and it is awkwardly explained at the end. Kendra performance is what makes this movie, such a shame the plot doesn't work.

Update for 4 March...

Kill Your Friends is a British darkly comic thriller set in 1997 where cocksure A&R manager Steven Stelfox (Nicholas Hoult) is in desperate need for a hit music act to save his job. With a new scout Darren (Craig Roberts) in tow, they go to Cannes and sign up a terrible German dance act Rudi with a song with highly offensive lyrics and a high price tag that'll need to be a big hit and they meet up with hip-hop act Rage whose first album was a hit but two years and £500,000 later, his next album is still isn't ready and his new direction is completely shit. After a terrible night at the Brit Awards, Steven goes back to friend and fellow A&R manager Roger Waters (James Corden) for a night of heavy drug taking to forget, but Roger starts babbling on about how he can turn the company around in a way that makes it sound like he is the new head of A&R, a position Steven covets and is a fit of rage, bashes Roger to death. After news settles in about Roger and the departure the current A&R head after the Rage debacle, Steven is given the job as acting head. His first job is to sign hot indie band The Lazies, a band his secretary Rebecca (Georgia King) had recommended previously but he ignored and he is in competition with hot shot opposition Anthony Parker-Hall (Tom Riley), who is a turn of events, signs the band to the label and is poached to be given the A&R head position. A detective (Edward Hogg), who would rather be a musician, is circling him in regards to Roger's murder. Steven can slowly see his job slipping from him and it's about to get worse when Rebecca works out he killed Roger and blackmails him into a better job. There's only one way out of the mess and it's going to get ugly. Nasty movie that has been promoted everywhere as like American Psycho and well the similarities are obvious, but Kill Your Friends forges its own path in a very British way. Hoult is in great form as the despicable Steven, reminiscent of his Skins character which was also great and it's good to see him playing this type of character again. Not for everyone as it gets very ugly, is highly cynical and there are no likeable characters, well in the good sense, but a decent dark ride into the horrifying world of the music industry. Damn disappointing that Georgia King doesn't quite get naked, I've kinda liked her from Tormented (terrible movie though) and Cockneys vs. Zombies, oh and playing a bitch in Wild Child and she plays nasty characters really well.

Update for 1 March...

Not much ready to cap on the movie side so here's a few quick videos from Australian movies I've finally gotten around to finishing. Been a while since I've seen these movie, particularly Mullet, which I think is a drama about a prodigal son who comes home only to find that everyone seems to have moved on without him. No Through Road is a fairly decent low budget Perth made thriller about a young woman who runs into a 'no through road' and into a house to evade a group of men who want to 'speak' to her about the death of one of their crew. The home owner is forced into helping the woman and this is going to be a long night. Seconds To Spare is a dicey Channel 9 TV movie co-production with America starring Antonio Sabato Jr. who goes about stopping a terrorist attack on a train from Broken Hill to Sydney headed by radical greenie Kate Beahan who is being undermined by a proper terrorist. Silly stuff, but would you expect anything less?
