Update for 28 May...

Just a quickie today from a new Australian film.

Thirst is a drama set in the middle of desert in 2017. Boyce (Myles Pollard) is a water carrier who is tasked to bring the isolated Minna (Victoria Haralabidou) back to society as her regular water service is being shut down. Minna is stubborn and does not want to go and after Boyce makes a desperate attempt to get her out of there only for Minna to sabotage his truck leaving them both stranded. Meanwhile, Zac (Tom Green) and Kit (Hanna Mangan Lawrence) are running away from their problems and get stuck in the desert where they come across Boyce and Minna. With no way to head back to civilisation, no way to contact anyone thanks to Zac sabotaging all communication connections and extremely limited water supply, the four come to terms with their predicament and find a way to get through it, well, maybe. An interesting film from the director of The Sugar Factory, 13 years after he made that movie that basically a four-hander where they talk about life and fall in love as death slowly approaches. Something a little different and worth a look if you don't mind a lot of talk.

Update for 26 May...

Time for a large HD series for once.

A Good Old Fashioned Orgy is a comedy about a group of New Yorkers who head up to the Hamptons every weekend to party. When Eric's (Jason Sudeikis) father decides to sell his Hampton house, it looks like the good times are over. So, with his best friend McCrudden (Tyler Labine) they plan the ultimate last party and decide on an orgy just between the group. Most of the group are reluctant, but over time they loosen up to the idea until the night of the orgy. Also, Eric falls for the real estate agent trusted with selling the house (Leslie Bibb). Can the perfect orgy go off without a hitch. Will it be their last party? Not a bad little comedy that is at least something a little different from the norm of sex comedies. Not an overly funny film, but never dull and the group seem to be well cast. I just wish there was more nudity in the film as there's a lot of strategic nudity at the orgy with arms covering breasts and such. Ah well...

Australian Classics Redux for 20 May...

A quick series from an old Aussie movie.

The Crossing is a 1990 drama about Sam (Robert Mammone), who comes back to town after leaving 18 months beforehand, hoping to continue where he left off. Things are looking good until he gets to his ex-girlfriend Meg (Danielle Spencer), who has moved on and is going out with his best friend Johnny (Russell Crowe), and Johnny has just asked Meg to marry him. Of course, tension develops between the two and they take out their frustrations by racing their cars against each other. This is all going to come to a head when Meg is asked to choose between the two young men and the result is going to be devastating. Pretty simple tale of a love triangle gone wrong, nothing special, but the leads are all pretty solid especially Robert Mammone who has a bigger role than Russell Crowe here. This is a rare period of time for this to happen.

Update for 14 May...

Haven't capped an Australian film in a little while, so here's a couple of quick ones.

Bathing Franky is a drama about Steve (Shaun Goss), who has just got out of prison and wants to get on with his life. He attempts to pick up his relationship with Susie (Bree Desborough) and gets a job delivering meals to old and frail people. During his deliveries, he encounters Rodney (Henri Szeps) and his invalid mother Franky (Maria Venuti). Rodney is a man who loves to entertain in the old vaudeville way like his mother and father did before him. Over time, Steve, still haunted by prison, moves away from Susie and after being beaten up, Rodney offers Steve a bed at his place. Things then become complicated as Steve and Rodney's relationship develops, but Steve has one thing he needs to do to expunge his past. An oK drama that is definitely better because of the great performances by both Goss and Szeps who help steer the film when it seems to go off into its own wild tangents.

Taj is a drama about Vjay (Mahesh Jadu), a writer of teen fiction who is currently living life in his own self-absorbed way. When he discovers a lump in his testicles, he decides to take stock of his life. His friend Harish (Sachin Joab) tells him he can start by rekindling his relationship with his young daughter who he has neglected lately. He also finishes his first adult novel and hopes this will break him out of his current slump. Things start to look up for Vjay as his relationship with his daughter redevelops, but when his grandmother dies of a stroke before he can get to Fiji to see her and his novel is rejected, he goes off the rails. And it doesn't help when his ex tells him that she is moving to Singapore with their daughter. Can Vjay get through this tough patch in his life and find some sort of peace. Not a bad little low key drama, but boy does Vjay go through a lot of hardship along the way. No wonder he goes off the rails. And it's rare to see an Australian movie where the lead cast is Indian. But one thing that baffles me is local comedy legend Mark Mitchell turning up as a drug dealer. That, I cannot explain...

Back to the HD movies.

Starlet is a drama about an up-and-coming porn star Jane (Dree Hemingway) who is living with flaky fellow porn star Melissa (Stella Maeve) and her wannabe porn kingpin boyfriend Mikey. One day while around various garage sales, Jane ends up at Sadie's (Besedka Johnson) place and buys a thermos. Inside the thermos ends up being a shitload of money that Sadie doesn't seem to know was in there. But instead of giving back the money, she decides to befriend the old lady, which Sadie is very reluctant to do so. Jane is persistent and over time they become friends. Enter Melissa, who stumbles on the money in Sadie's room and decides to use some of it to pay off her debts. But, Melissa is unpredictable and it is this that could come between them and end up destroying the friendship between Jane and Sadie. Interesting film that is at it's best when it focuses on the friendship between Jane and Sadie, as the character of Melissa is incredibly hard to like and seems to be on her own path to self-destruction. Plus, there's the porn stuff which comes as a bit of a surprise and misplaced in this movie, even if the lead is a porn star. It seems to come from out of nowhere and it's a body double too, which makes little sense to show it. Ah well, it's an OK film even if flawed.

First of two part Michelle Williams update.

Take This Waltz follows Margot (Michelle Williams), who's in a happy marriage to the loving Lou (Seth Rogen). On a trip for work, she meets Daniel (Luke Kirby) and they sort of hit it off and decide to take a taxi home together, only to find out that they live across the road from each other. Over time, Daniel continues to chase Margot, but Margot resists until it gets to the point where Margot has to make a decision - stay with Lou or take the plunge with Daniel. Oh boy this is a frustrating film. Margot is such a flake that you just know she would take the easy way out which has no guarantees of permanency. And Lou's such a good bloke, that when Margot inevitably decides to leave him, it's near impossible to side with Margot. Bah!

Update for 7 May...

First of two part Michelle Williams update.

Blue Valentine is a drama focusing on the beginning and the ending of the relationship between Cindy (Michelle Williams) and Dean (Ryan Gosling). In the beginning, Cindy is studying to be a doctor and going out with Bobby (Mike Vogel), but it sours, which is when struggling Dean spies her and decides to pursue her. There relationship is a whirlwind the culminates in Cindy becoming pregnant. Meanwhile, the relationship is ending when Dean makes one last ditch effort to impress Cindy with a weekend away, but Cindy doesn't have her heart in it and Dean gets drunk again. This is going to end badly. Good film, but it feels like it's missing something, as in the how the relationship fell apart. Yeah, we can gather how it happened, but it still feels like it is missing an important part. Otherwise, this is a tough, uncompromising look at a relationship that's going to end badly.

Going to Toronto by himself for a week, he moves into his randy friend Dandak's (Vik Sahay) place and attempts to learn from him how to pick up women, but Jordan really wants Rachel and during a party where he strikes out with various women, he decides to get revenge on Rachel by sending her a picture of him living it up with a hot chick. Which leads him to a strip club, where he takes various pictures with the strippers, gets drunk and gets kicked out to the icy street pantless, where he is saved by stripper Julia (Emily Hampshire), who takes him back to her place to sober up. Well, it turns out that Jordan and Julia can help each other out, Jordan with Julia's finances and dream to run a restaurant and Julia with Jordan's sex life. Over the next week, they help out each other and wouldn't you know it, Julia falls for Jordan even though Jordan only wants Rachel. So, how will end? A surprisingly raunchy romantic comedy with plenty of sexual situations and talk, but My Awkward Sexual Adventure isn't without it's charm and has a few good laughs along the way. Well worth a look
