Update for 28 June...

90s weekend upon us once more. Never heard of Blood Games before I watched it and didn't really know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised by this exploitation thriller where an all-women baseball team play a bunch of rednecks for a bet and kick their arse, but the rednecks are not willing to part with the money and after a few drinks, a couple of the rednecks try to rape a couple of the women and as they escape, they accidentally drive their bus into the son of the local leader, crushing him. The leader puts a bounty on their head and the rapey rednecks go after the women but they won't go down without a fight. While the movie has a few wonky moments, it's actually pretty good, yes, it's pure exploitation with the usual sleaziness but it's an even match up and both sides suffer heavy loses. Surprisingly good movie and some decent nudity.

I'd never seen Smilla's Sense Of Snow but it is very much that 90s high concept thriller that was popular throughout the decade with an extensively well known cast but very few Danish actors for a movie set in Copenhagen. Julia Ormond plays a real prig of a person, another 90s conceit, who goes about singlehandedly trying to solve the strange death of a young Greenland neighbour although Gabriel Byrne's character gives her a helping hand by playing both sides. It's a unwieldy movie, a lot is going on and there's a lot of explaining that needs much concentration but it passes the time well and Ormond's character is so horrible to everyone, she ends up being quite likeable strangely enough. These type of movies don't get made much any more which is a shame as it's a solid format.

Update for 23 June...

A bunch of new Australian movies have been released recently and it's time to cap them. Not much but better than nothing. Some quick synopses:

Two Heads Creek is a horror comedy where twin British siblings, a man and a woman, decide to find their real mother after the woman they thought was their mother died. So they come to Australia to a rundown old town in the the middle of nowhere and find out that their real mother also just died and everyone is acting very suspicious about it. Turns out the town in a Asian tourist trap straight out of 2000 Maniacs and they want to keep it that way, but the twins just want to find out what happened to their mother even if it means they have to kill everyone in town or be force fed into the meat grinder. Silly movie that plays up Australian clichés to the extreme, a few laughs mainly at Australia's criminal history and treatment of foreigners but the stereotypes become unbearable after a while.

Outback is a survival thriller where an American couple go on a holiday up the northern coast of Australia but get off to a bad start thanks to a bungled marriage proposal. They decide to go off course to Uluru and blindly follow the GPS to their doom in the middle of nowhere. Not much happens in this movie and what does is a bit repetitive and there's an strange obsession with piss throughout the movie, even before the desperation sets in. Plus dodgy American accents.

Babyteeth is a depressing drama about a teenage girl (Eliza Scanlen) who has cancer while her parents try to make sure her life is as normal as possible until a dubious young man comes into the girl's life and makes her happy despite her parent's objections. Not bad movie but is fairly depressing throughout as it's never not mentioned that the girl has cancer and the parents are not at all stable.

Measure For Measure is an ensemble drama about a young man who falls for a Muslim girl which sets off a series of events involving the local crimelord and his shady apprentice and the Muslim girl's gangster brother who will do anything to keep them apart. OK movie.

Update for 21 June...

90s weekend update. Yet another movie starring Deborah Kara Unger, the fourth I've capped in the past month or so. I'd never heard of Luminous Motion and it turns out it's a pretty fucked up movie with the kid from The Santa Clause series playing a kid who travels around with his mother who sleeps with a different man every night and keeps moving from town to town until an accident causes her mother to shack up with a kind stranger. The kid doesn't like this so he drugs the stranger and then puts a drill in his head and they are back on the road again. The kid keeps seeing visions of his father and the dead stranger and is getting more disturbed by the day. Then his father comes back into his life and the urge to kill his father rises. It's a pretty messed up movie but the kid is actually pretty good. Deborah doesn't have much to do and a very young Paz de la Huerta turns up as a friend of the kid who doesn't believe he'll kill his father. Wild, messed up movie, something I didn't expect when I first saw it.

Another strange movie is Dead Weekend, a movie with barely a plot of a police officer (Stephen Baldwin) who is clearing the streets for a coming earthquake but is really hunting an alien that has arrived on Earth. He comes across a beautiful woman named Amelia in a barn and has sex with her then it turns out that she's the shape-shifting alien that he is hunting. The alien has the magical ability to turn into any woman of any race and is very horny and wants the police officer as he tries to hide her from his trigger happy partner. That's it for plot, it's just sex scene after sex scene with another actress and some ramblings from a radio announcer until there's a need to end the movie. It's not that interesting apart from the sex and nudity and I was trying to think of a movie it reminded me of and the closest I could think of is the sleazy Australian movie Centrespread. Nowhere near as sleazy as that movie but it's heading in that direction.

Update for 15 June...

Well, Species II takes the silliness of the first movie and none of what made it work and just rolls with it for an incredibly nutty follow-up. They clone Henstridge's character so they can bring her back to sit in a box and do not much until she escapes for some alien sex. The protagonist in this movie is a hero astronaut who just come back from Mars infected by some alien goo. Making the bad guy the biggest hero in America is a decent concept but this is never really explored too much and the guy they got to play the hero is an absolute no charisma drip whose only attribute is that he's good looking. A total dead loss. The plot is basically a gender swap of the first movie but instead of the female alien being foiled at every turn in the original, the astronaut just has a neverending run of women he impregnates and then takes all the male children to a barn until they are ready to transform into adult aliens. The stomach bursting instant pregnancy scenes are fun and somewhat bizarre (particularly the first one in the hotel room) but they are still clearly ripped off from the Alien franchise. It's hard to know whether the film was going for a jokey tone or not because while there are moments that are nutty and pretty ridiculous, the movie is mostly serious when I think it would've worked better if they were more jokey.

Update for 14 June...

90s update comes around once more. Ah Species, haven't seen this since I skipped school and saw it in cinemas and I'm surprised that it's taken this long to have another look at it. First thing I noticed was that Michelle Williams plays the younger alien, didn't remember that. The movie is total B-grade fun, there's a bit of silliness throughout the movie, the computer effects are still a bit hokey but the practical effects are pretty solid. The cast is a pretty solid bunch, no real big names, just solid, reliable actors and Henstridge is perfect as the horny alien, incredibly hot and her limitations as an actress actually help her as a fish-out-of-water alien in the real world for the first time. And with the always reliable New Zealand director Roger Donaldson guiding the movie, Species works well when it really shouldn't. Hard to believe that a major movie studio would make a movie like this nowadays and be the moderate hit it was, let alone the absolutely bonkers sequel which I'll take a look at tomorrow.

Update for 13 June...

Redux time and 3 New Zealand movies for today's update. Being a while since I've capped these movies, I redid Snakeskin about 14 years ago, now it's finally in HD, same with In My Father's Den. Finally gotten around to recapping Heavenly Creatures and it's the first time it's appeared on this site. I capped it off VHS back in the day (early 2003) but now it's in HD. Sadly the widescreen versions of Heavenly Creatures, both in 1.85:1 and 2.35:1, frame out the scene where Melanie Lynskey gets up out the bed naked so that we don't see her breasts. In the fullscreen version, you do see her breasts but I haven't been able to find a fullscreen version that doesn't cost a ridiculous amount and I don't have a VHS player any more, so it wouldn't be much use. But, I still have my collages that I made back in the day, so I've re-upped an old collage. No video as I could never get a decent video frame rate off of my video capture card back in the day, even in small size, only good enough to make caps.

Have to say that In My Father's Den and Heavenly Creatures are my one and two favourite New Zealand movies of all time and both are fairly depressing movies, so there's something...

Update for 10 June...

After capping Odessa Young from Shirley the other day I went looking to see what was coming up for her and found today's movie which I remembered getting a small cinema release last year and wondered why it hasn't been released for home viewing except it had, 11 months ago. So, I've fallen asleep at the wheel and veered into oncoming traffic yet again. Look out...

Celeste is a drama where a famous opera singer Celeste (Radha Mitchell), who lives in a tropical paradise, has decided to come out of early retirement after the death of her husband 10 years previous. Jack (Thomas Cocquerel) is an apprentice carpenter in the city who gets bashed by thugs after he doesn't pay off his $50,000 gambling debt, so after wandering for a few days and getting dumped by his girlfriend, he escapes to the tropical paradise to visit his stepmother, Celeste. While in town, Jack meets local Rita (Odessa Young) and they sort of hit it off before he unexpectedly arrives at Celeste's place. She welcomes him but she is also busy getting ready for her comeback and doing endless interviews her manager Grace (Nadine Garner) has set up and Celeste is becoming anxious and prone to outbursts. Jack remembers various things that happened around his father's death such as his funeral, various moments with Celeste and his father's infidelity which will lead to why his father died. Jack attempts to help some carpenters build a stage at the property but becomes violent and scares them off but does promise Grace to build the stage himself. Jack starts seeing Rita although that hits an early pothole when Rita gets Jack to wear his father's jacket to a lunch and Celeste has another outburst because of it. Celeste and Jack share a moment which almost leads to something more and it causes Jack to abandon Rita. The thugs attempt to track down Jack but Celeste comes to the rescue by paying him for making the stage plus she gives him the money he owes the them. Celeste and Jack share another moment but before they go any further, Celeste tells Jack that she's dying. The big comeback arrives and Celeste become extremely anxious but manages to perform. Jack remembers how his father died and his involvement in it. While Celeste basks in a successful comeback, she collapses and dies.

OK drama that is not as arty as I expected from the director of the ultra-arthouse 2007 film Corroboree, making it over 10 years between that and making Celeste. Mostly driven by Mitchell and Cocquerel, there stories converge into an increasingly sad movie about new beginnings mixed with missed opportunities. Both characters are hard to warm too, both prone to wild outbursts, sometimes over the slightest things and all the supporting characters don't have much to do although Odessa Young adds some brightness to the tense mood. Celeste's property is utterly gorgeous, a literal tropical paradise that becomes a feature of the movie, it's sprawling forest mixed with architecture that never seems to end. To be honest, the plot isn't all that interesting and Celeste's death seems like it only exists to give the movie a proper ending the movie probably didn't need. Not a bad movie but will test the patience of most.

And I'll need to revise the nude debut status of Odessa Young as she shows her right breast in an open shirt.

Update for 9 June...

Raiding the 90s DVD collection again and come up with 7 movies.

The two British movies, Love, Honour and Obey and Final Cut, made by the same people who got their famous friends involved, were roundly dismissed back in the day and in some quarters blamed for the downturn in the industry. I hadn't seen either of them before and I went in with a relatively open mind. Anyway, Love, Honour and Obey is absolute dogshit, just a completely hateful movie where most of the jokes are in poor taste or at the expense other people and a running theme of homophobia I can't remember been as bad in any other 90s movie I've watched. Everyone is phoning it in, particularly Ray Winstone and Jude Law and the actual plot is just inconsequential to anything, mostly Jonny Lee Miller and Rhys Ifans taking pot shots at one another. Irredeemably bad. Final Cut has most of the same cast as Love, Honour and Obey but at least has a semi-interesting plot about a group of friends at a wake watching a movie made by the deceased where he exposes all his friends as disgusting pigs and unveils a big secret. Ray Winstone is way better here, his role is more expansive and his hair trigger temper is used well in the movie. Sure, there's the same terrible jokes that punctuated LHO and a bit of ugly violence which seems unnecessary but there's enough going on in the plot and the movie in the movie that it holds some interest to the end. Maybe the critics were right on these two movies...

Lonely Hearts is an alright thriller about a grifter (Eric Roberts) of lonely middle aged women who is found out by one of his conquests (Beverly D'Angelo) who instead of dobbing him in decides to join in the fun, much to his chagrin. She poses as his sister and they play up the incest angle in the movie as they continue to grift more lonely women and eventually start killing them. Roberts and D'Angelo are quite good and as the killings begin, both act in unexpected ways which was a nice surprise. Fair amount to cap in the movie and if I never hear that score ever again, it'll be a blessing (you'll know what I mean if you watch some of the videos below).

The Immortals is one of the those movies that was quite clearly made in the wake of Reservoir Dogs and plays off it extensively. I'm surprised it isn't a cult hit as there's many elements that would suggest it should: a trendy, ultraviolent premise and eclectic cast of well known or soon to be well known stars and a solid list of character actors. But, it's a total pretender of a movie. It so wants to be Reservoir Dogs but just ends up being another clone,. no soul, nothing really memorable, pointless and endless shoot-outs, an interesting premise but badly implemented that ends up being just a trick of a plot that has no bearing on the overall plot of the movie. It's not hard to see why it didn't get a cinema release as it's basically a B-movie with delusions of being better. Terribly disappointing as it has the potential but it's easy to see why it's long forgotten.

Update for 2 June...

Still going with the 90s updates and today, it's David Cronenberg's Crash, a movie I hadn't seen before and I'm still endeavouring to catch up on the Cronenberg back catalogue. Basically, the movie is about a sex-obsessed couple who get drawn into a group of outsiders who are obsessed with car crashes to the point of being sexually excited by them. I knew what to expect but this was really something else, Elias Koteas's character is an absolute pervert and amazingly after all the women he fucks, James Spader's character becomes fascinated with Koteas and wants him and eventually has him. Some scenes are so bizarre they are hard to comprehend in any reality but I was never less than fascinated by all of it to the point where it might be my favourite Cronenberg movie. Just amazing stuff...

Update for 1 June...

Another 90s movies, this time the 1997 thriller Stag, a movie I'd never seen before but distinctly remember seeing it on the shelf of video stores all the time back in the day. I don't exactly know why but maybe it was that singer Taylor Dayne was in it in her first acting gig. Well, the movie is pretty much as promised, a bachelor party turns deadly and everyone turns on one another, pretty similar to the next year's Very Bad Things except that movie was a black comedy and Stag is a straight drama. To be honest, the movie isn't great and is a rung or two below the not that great Very Bad Things and isn't helped by playing things straight with a bunch of ugly characters and the ending is a completely unsatisfying cop out but still bizarrely better than the despicable ending of Very Bad Things.
