Update for 30 October...

It's the Saturday Australian/New Zealand movie update with another 5 movies this week. Some synopses:

Eagle Vs. Shark is a 2006 oddball New Zealand comedy where Lily (Loren Taylor) is an outcast who works at a burger joint and has a huge crush on Jarrod (Jemaine Clement), who works at a gaming store but barely knows she exists. One day, Jarrod comes into the burger joint to give the cool girl an invitation to his birthday party but she's not interested although Lily sees it as her chance to get Jarrod. She goes to the party with her brother and impresses him with her gaming skills, so much so that they have sex and start going together. Jarrod only has one thing on his mind: to go back to his home town and fight his bully. Thanks to Lily, who convinces her brother to drive them back to Jarrod's home town, he can finally achieve this. But things go badly between Lily and Jarrod as he concentrates on getting revenge on his bully so he ends up dumping her, leaving her stranded with him and his oddball family with no way to get home. After grumbling about this, Lily decides to enjoy herself for the few days she has to kill and that's when Jarrod finally notices her. Jarrod then gets in touch with his bully for a fight but it doesn't go to plan. First movie from Taika Waititi is probably best described as odd-on-purpose, with two dorky characters who are hard to get into because of their awkwardness. Jarrod is just awful, always making things about himself despite being an outcast which leads to his abrupt break-up with Lily. Lily is a similar character but does a lot of growing up and becomes more interesting when she's left to fend for herself. The movie has this twee feeling throughout which is dialled down in Waititi later movies (Hunt For The Wilderpeople, Jojo Rabbit) and this makes the movie feel a little dated as it's the type of indie twee that was popular in the early 2000s and isn't really done any more, for good reason as it's very annoying. The movie is not without some good laughs but it's awkwardness becomes overwhelming. OK movie but I think it would be a better movie if it was made today mainly because it would've removed the more dated artistic flourishes.

The Last Saint is a 2014 New Zealand crime drama where an innocent young man Minka (Beulah Koale) takes a job at his estranged father Joe's (Calvin Tuteao) strip club so that he can help his drug-addled mother Lia (Joy Vaele). After an altercation with a rugby player, Joe and his right hand man Tiger (Xavier Horan) decide to introduce Minka to their world, which leads him to psychotic drug dealer Pinball (Joseph Naufahu), who gives him a job as a drug courier for exclusive clients. Minka meets Zoey (Sophia Huybens) and hits it off with her but in a more friendly way. He becomes more immersed in the underworld and the deeper he gets, the more he hates it but also the harder it becomes to get out of it. After his mother kills herself, Minka is faced with the decision of the direction he wants his life to go. OK movie, Minka's a hard character to get into as he doesn't say much and seems distant, possibly scared of the world he's being introduced to and reacts differently from the usual wide-eyed and bushy tailed characters that are usually introduced to this world. The story ain't nothing new, just set in a different place.

The Joe Manifesto  is a 2013 Australian drama where Joe (writer/director Gregory Pakis) is bored with job, his girlfriend and his life in general. One day Vee (Chloe Gardner) takes a job at his workplace and promptly walks out the same day. He wonders why, so he tracks her down and Vee tells him that she has a manifesto where she lives life on her terms and if it starts to get monotonous, she walks away. She encourages Joe to start his own manifesto, which he does and he starts to speak more truthfully to people which leads to some interesting outcomes both positive and negative. He also starts hanging out more with Vee and then is encouraged to have sex with her. Eventually, they fall for one another which is more unexpected for Vee as she isn't into relationships and has 3 other men on the go. Joe then goes deeper into his manifesto, breaking off his engagement, downsizing his job and having sex with more workmates but while he's enjoying himself more, he is alienating pretty much everyone until he eventually alienates Vee. Then he hits rock bottom and decides to make amends but in his way. Interesting movie, it doesn't take any easy paths and doesn't necessarily side with Joe. The movie follows Joe more than judges him and doesn't give him the easy happy ending you usually get. Vee's also an interesting character until she falls for Joe and then she becomes the cliché she wasn't before which is a shame. Not a bad little movie also has an early role from Penelope Mitchell as one of Joe's co-workers he unsuccessfully tries to hit on (he hits on pretty much all the women at his workplace).

Gregory Pakis' first movie was the 2004 (but made in 2001) extremely low budget comedy The Garth Method where Garth (Gregory Pakis) is a struggling actor who misses out on all the roles, barely even getting an audition. After bundling up his agent, he finds out that he's not 'manly' and doesn't have much experience with women so he starts trying to hit on women and is completely unsuccessful. He finally loses his virginity to a stripper who takes an interest in him and things start to pick up acting wise as he lands a role in a big movie. He starts to bulk up for the role but overdoes it, ends up with insomnia then in hospital and finds out that the producers want a bigger name for his role. That tears it for Garth so over a week, he along with another struggling actor Lorna (Katrina Baylis) concoct a plan to make a movie where they force people at gunpoint to be in their movie and it goes about as well as expected. This was a cult hit back in the day and it plays like the small movie that could but ultimately the movie has a concept way to wild to express with its meagre budget and while the intentions are there, the skill to bring them out isn't. The Joe Manifesto is a better movie most likely because a lot was learned by making this movie. The Garth Method is a fairly watchable movie and you can see why it had a small cult following particularly in Melbourne where it was made but it's restrictions are ultimately it's downfall.

Burke & Wills is a 2006 mumblecore drama where Wills (Matt Zeremes) is kicked out of his girlfriend's place because he's a hopeless loser who's sponging off her and her sister. He finds a place with Burke (Oliver Torr), who's is a lost soul prone to bouts of crying in the shower. They hit it off through beer and conversations while Wills finds a new girlfriend Nicole (Hannah Durack), Burke's beloved grandmother dies and he becomes even more depressed despite inheriting $140,000. Wills gets a job and Burke becomes more depressed and it leads to change in both men's lives but also fractures their relationship in a way which will become irrevocable after a fateful incident. I've seen this movie before and according to IMDB, I rated it a 6, so I must've in a good mood while watching it because this movie is in no way a 6. It's a typical mumblecore mess, annoying characters, ridiculous situations, boring conversations and just when it looks like it's about to get on track, it pulls out a severe ending that feels like it came from another movie. The plot around Wills getting a job makes no sense whatsoever and then we have to put up with 5 or so minutes of his boss whining about fuck-knows-what, I just couldn't give a shit, I would've walked if this was real life. At least Wills had some personality, Burke makes the dead seem expressive and then the final five minutes is so severe, it just seems to come out of thin air. Burke just starts sexually assaulting women. I've gotta get back to where I was giving this movie a 6 and see what I was huffing; this movie is garbage.

The best thing I can say about Burke & Wills is that at least it got a release, same with The Garth Method, thanks to Accent Films which was extremely good at releasing no budget Australian (and overseas) movies that otherwise would've been lost like a number still were. Nowadays, we have 8 million streaming services for movies to turn up on but in the mid 2000s, there was no such thing. I just found out they're actually still around, just on YouTube and EBay for DVD. Sadly no new Australian stuff.

Update for 27 October...

Another 90s movie, this time the 1996 Spanish/British horror comedy Killer Tongue, a movie I saw in the cult slot on SBS back in the late 90s. Silly movie that plays in a very over-the-top fashion and has it's moments but maybe it's more than a bit too silly. It also has two horror icons in Robert Englund and Doug Bradley in pretty prominent roles and Jonathan Rhys Meyers in a very early role. Also, Melinda Clarke is in a skin-tight bodysuit for the majority of the movie, way too much to cap though.

Update for 23 October...

Being trying to make Saturday the day I cap Australian/New Zealand movies for the past couple of months, so here's a few more, all taken from streaming service Tubi and I haven't been able to find them elsewhere. Hell, The Most Fun You Can Have Dying has been near impossible to find until it randomly turned up of Tubi recently.

Some synopses:

The Most Fun You Can Have Dying is 2012 New Zealand movie where 25 year-old Michael (Matt Whelan) is told he's going to die and he doesn't take well, so he decides to live it up. When $200,000 is donated to him for an experimental treatment in America, he decides instead to steal the money and go out with a big bang, living it up in Hong Kong, then all over Europe. After getting beaten up in Paris, he meets Sylvie (Roxane Mesquida), a lost soul and they find common ground and eventually fall in love, of sorts. Then after an incident, it all comes crashing down for Michael and he is forced to live his final day exactly how he doesn't want to. Ha ha, fuck that, he goes out his way. Interesting to see a movie where a character takes the path less travelled for once and almost cops out in the end but thankfully doesn't. There's no real sympathy for Michael, he's going out the way he wanted and even when Sylvie becomes a road bump in those plans, he at least finds someone with similar sensibilities. French actress Roxane Mesquida is well cast as the aloof lost soul; a scene where she has a miscarriage is incredibly bizarre and probably only could've been pulled off by Roxane. Pretty good but definitely not for everyone.

A Perfect Life is 2010 Australian torture porn thriller where Andrew (Johan Earl) has a successful life with his beautiful wife Helen (Heidi Houghting) but he'd rather be with his mistress Rachel (Amelia Kaldor). But he won't commit to Rachel and she drugs him and he wakes up tied to bed with a wall of spikes above him that comes down if he tells a lie. Also, Rachel has kidnapped Helen and Andrew can stop all of this if he presses a button to kill his wife and be with Rachel and who really gives a shit. Just another boring-arse torture porn movie with nothing to add and even the violence is minimal. Not helped by the movie being incredibly murky so you can't see much of anything most of the time. Joe Estevez turns up as mentally-challenged homeless guy who randomly shows up for some reason.

You're Not Thinking Straight is a 2016 Australian drama where Zack (George Ronsin) is kicked out of home on his 18th birthday and starts living on the streets. He is taken in by sex worker Elly (Sage Godrei) who takes a liking to him but she's not in a great place either. They fall for one another and of course it ends in tragedy. Told with a central conceit of Zack contemplating everything while locked in a toilet cubicle, which becomes ridiculous and then just plain doesn't make sense by the end. Even at 80-odd minutes, the movie takes a long time saying a whole lot of nothing.

Crackheads is 2013 New Zealand comedy where a bunch of friends who aren't happy in life take crack and it makes everything better for a brief moment, so they keep taking crack to get through their lives but you need money to keep taking crack. Then all the suppliers get busted, so now you gotta make your own crack, which they do. In a church... Wacky comedy with a few laughs and bizarrely is almost a companion piece to the Mads Mikkelsen-starring Another Round. Very similar plots for quite a while although Crackheads goes for laughs far more than Another Round does. Not a great movie but it has a silly idea and just runs with it and sometimes that's all you need.

Update for 20 October...

One more 90s movie, the 1997 comedy Orgazmo about a Mormon who unwittingly becomes a porn star. Has it's moments but you can tell that Matt Stone and Trey Parker are still honing their shtick as there's a lot of whiffs in the movie and a bit of early remnants of what would become South Park. Also a better movie than their follow-up BASEketball, a very ordinary movie. Hard to believe they were huge just 2 years after this was released.

It feels redundant to make caps of the incredibly brief nudity in the movie considering that most of the cast featured below are porn stars.

Update for 19 October...

Another 90s movie, this time the 1992 erotic thriller Body Of Evidence. I remember watching it back in the day but I barely remembered anything from the movie apart from the sex and nudity and that might be because I've seen videos and caps. Turns out the movie is 3/4 a boring courtroom thriller and the rest is sex. So much of the movie is set in the courtroom with just salacious details of the crime and Madonna's character's sex life, ending with the inevitable twist which is sort of obvious because who else could've been. The pairing of Willem Dafoe and Madonna is very odd but at least it's something different and is sort of interesting until even the sex scenes go on for far too long, something I'd never thought I'd say. It's not hard to see why the movie failed...

Update for 16 October...

A whole heap of Australian and New Zealand movie either newly released or recently released movies I've only just gotten around to watching. Some synopses:

Lone Wolf is a 2021 Australian movie set in Melbourne where a disregarded police officer (Diana Glenn) shows the police minister (Hugo Weaving) and the assistant commissioner (Stephen Curry) a video diary of a planned terrorist attack by an anarchist wannabe Conrad (Josh McConville). He runs an anarchist book shop with his girlfriend Winnie (Tilda Cobham-Hervey), who looks after her brother Stevie (Chris Bunton), who has Down Syndrome. It looks like the police have Conrad well-surveilled also he's a police informant but he has an itch to break out of it, so with the help of the local anarchists, he decides to let off a bomb in public with no casualties so that the anarchists can let themselves be known. Then it goes wrong and all hell breaks loose where no-one is safe. Intriguing thriller, told mostly through surveillance video although the movie hits a snag and relies too much on video shot by Stevie which the cops wouldn't have had access too. Also gets a bit too unbelievable in the end but has a solid story to tell and an interesting way to tell it.

About An Age is a 2018 Australian drama where a small bunch of final year high school kids get together for a 'piss-up'. Michelle (Rachel Lee) is bringing her older boyfriend Jackson (Daniel Cockburn) to meet her brother Dave (Eddie Orton) and friends Brett (Keith Purcell) and Sarah (Ashley Stocco) for the first time. Brett has a crush on Sarah but is too chicken to ask her. Michelle is wavering on whether she wants to go further with Jackson. Sarah is trying to decide whether she wants to do hairdressing and advertising. Brett tells Sarah that Dave had a brief fling with the weird girl at school. This results in tension in the group and in Sarah playing a cruel joke on the weird girl with things coming to the boil. Very talkie teen drama that has odd references to old things which suggests that this movie was written by people quite a bit older than those portrayed on the screen. Things get a bit repetitive until the cruel joke is played which livens up the movie but it also seems to be the only way the writers knew how to end the movie because it feels like it was going nowhere until then.

Stray is 2018 New Zealand drama about two lost souls who find one another. Jack (Kieran Charnock) has just gotten out of prison on parole and has also lost his job which leaves him in jeopardy of going back inside. He is still haunted by what he did and decides to get away by driving to his father's cabin for a while. Then he see an old man who was possibly involved with his crime and attempts to kill him but when it comes to killing him, he can't take the shot. Grace (Kosovan actress Arta Dobroshi) has just been released from prison but has nowhere to stay so she squats at various empty places. One day, Jack comes home and finds Grace at the cabin and she runs away. He catches up to her but allows Grace to stay for the night and she seduces him. They get to know one another as they try to move on with their lives. That's pretty much the movie. Barely anything happens and the two characters don't meet until an hour in so there's long stretches of loneliness and solitude. The movie livens up when the two meet and form a tentative relationship. We never know what either of the two did to go to jail although we get bits and pieces of what Jack did including a blink-and-you'll miss appearance from Luciane Buchanan. Definitely a movie for the patient and my patience definitely got thin during that first hour. Scenery is nice though and there's plenty of it.

The Changeover is 2017 New Zealand teen supernatural thriller where Laura (Erana James) is a high school student who is forced to look after her little brother Jacko because her mother (Melanie Lynskey) is always at work. One day they come across an old man (British actor Timothy Spall) selling knick-knacks from the shipping container who has a strange allure over Jacko and creeps Laura out. Laura can feel something changing inside her while she attracts the attention of local hottie Sorensen (Nicholas Galitzine). The old man becomes more interested in Jacko and comes to their house but can't come inside because he wasn't invited inside. Sorensen tells Laura that he's a witch, who along with his mother (Lucy Lawless) and grandmother, can help her with the old man. But the best way for Laura to get rid of the old man is to go into the 'changeover' and go inside herself to battle him. Sorensen warns her against it because it is very dangerous but when Jacko becomes gravely ill with the old man taking his lifeforce, Laura has no choice but to do the 'changeover'. Made by the parents of Thomasin McKenzie, who has a small role in the movie as one of Laura's friends, this obvious attempt at a international breakout teen thriller is OK but gets bogged down in the witch stuff and witches aren't the most enlivened supernatural force at the best of times. Has a pretty decent cast with Spall very creepy throughout, even more so now that he's lost a lot of weight although Lynskey and Lawless don't have a lot to do. I was surprised to find out that Erana James was the lead particularly as she's now on the verge of breaking out.

It's actually being a few months since I've seen Lowdown Dirty Criminals, so I'll briefly say it's a 2020 New Zealand crime comedy about a dope (James Rolleston) who's supposed to kill a bloke who is having an affair with his boss' wife only to accidentally kill the wrong guy and then everything goes wrong until it ends up involving another crime boss (Rebecca Gibney). It's pretty stock standard stuff with the only thing of note being the oddball casting of Rebecca Gibney as a nasty crime boss.

This Town is a 2021 New Zealand mockumentary where town pariah Sean (writer/director David White), who was found not guilty of the massacre of his family, goes about his life despite everyone thinking he's guilty. He signs up to a dating app and finds Casey (Alice May Connolly), who falls for him and is convinced he didn't do it. Meanwhile former local cop Pam (Robyn Malcolm), who was kicked off the force for her obsession involving the case, is still trying to put Sean away, for the good of the town and to get her job back. This is putting great strain on her marriage. These characters along with a whole bunch of other locals are interviewed while Pam becomes more obsessed, even going to the point of breaking up Sean and Casey. But did Sean actually commit the massacre or is the answer Pam is looking for closer than she realises. Mildly funny mockumentary, playing off the true crime genre and mixing it with small town New Zealand tropes. There's a pretty funny scene where Sean enters into a Demolition Derby where everyone hates him but apart from that it's fairly gentle in it's humour. Robyn Malcolm is pretty good as the overly determined cop who even puts her husband offside with her behaviour.

90s weekend update continues.

Jezebel's Kiss is a typical B-grade erotic thriller where Jezebel (Katherine Barrese) rides into town on a motorbike and gets into an accident. With her bike trashed, she needs money to get it fixed so she takes a job as a waitress at the local diner. Then every man in town becomes obsessed with her including the local cop, the local developer (Malcolm McDowell) and his useless son. After getting in trouble with the cop, she moves into the developer's guest house and he and his son become obsessed with Jezebel. Also, it turns out that Jezebel has history with the town which is a wild coincidence that she happens to be in the area. Nothing special, pretty stock-standard erotic thriller with a bit of nudity from Katherine Barrese, pretty much the only reason to watch the movie.

I tried watching Revenge Of The Nerds IV: Nerds In Love but it's so annoying I had to give up. I watched the original a long time ago and don't remember it being this unwatchable. Also, it's a TV movie so it feels very weirdly structured for what it's trying to achieve. Just so many annoying nerds...

90s weekend update with a couple of B-grade thrillers.

Cover Up is a thriller where a group of terrorists steal a big weapon and plan to use. Turns out there's a conspiracy inside the military and some members may well be involved. Dolph Lundgren plays a crusading journalist who's a bit of a dork and doesn't do much action, which feels like a rip-off. OK but definitely needed more from Dolph.

Night Vision is a serial killer thriller where two rogue cops (Fred Williamson and Cynthia Rothrock) goes after a cocky serial killer who kills impious women and exposes their behaviour. Also, he seems to have the backing of high-up police. The rogue cops break all the rules to get their annoying prick of a serial killer. Fun movie but the plot is patently ridiculous and the whole serial killer deal makes no sense whatsoever. Williamson and Rothrock seem to be enjoying themselves though.

Update for 5 October...

90s weekend update continues with another movie from Hong Kong.

Yan Pei Go Jang Haai (Horrible High Heels) is a 1996 thriller where people start disappearing and at the same time, a mysterious new leather high heel shoe hits the market and becomes popular quickly. Turns out it's made from human flesh that a serial killer is taking from his victims and selling to local businesses and the local crime gang. Stuck in the middle is Sherry (Law Kwai-Ying). who works for a shoe business while every woman hates her and every man wants to rape her. When she fights back after another man rapes her, it ends badly for her. Meanwhile, the serial killer is tracked down but he's not going down without a massive gun fight where everyone magically has a gun for some reason. Basically a rehash of The Untold Story, but far worse to the point of complete incompetency. The serial killer wears a mask to cover his face but it's so obvious who it is, it's baffling as to why they even bothered with the mystery. There's three rape/attempted rape scenes including one where a woman gets chopped up which just makes the film incredibly ugly while another rape scene is inexplicably replayed later with extra footage and the wrong audio, so I don't know whether it's a manufacturing error or part of the original film but it suits the general incompetency of the movie. Poor Sherry is put through the wringer and then gets a horribly depressing ending where I kind of wish the movie turned into I Spit On Your Grave instead because at least that would've given her some dignity. There's so many scenes that make no sense so it's hardly surprising the plot goes off the rails early and never recovers. A poorly made movie that's only redeeming feature is Law Kwai-Ying's performance against such degradation. And her masturbation/dream sex scene is pretty sweet.

Update for 2 October...

Just doing some clean-up with a few Australian movies I've had lying around for a while and finally got around to capping them. Some quick synopses:

Ride Like A Girl is the story of the first female jockey to ride the winner of the Melbourne Cup. Pretty straightforward struggle story. Directed by Rachel Griffiths.

The Death And Life Of Otto Bloom is a very interesting fake documentary about a man named Otto Bloom (Xavier Samuel) who lives his life in reverse where he cannot make new memory but has the ability to see into the future. A psychiatrist (Matilda Brown plays the younger woman, her mother Rachel Ward plays her as an older woman) recounts her experiences with Otto. Mostly fascinating but has a fairly unsatisfying ending that feels like a cop out. Could've been a real classic.

UnIndian is an Australian attempt to break into the Indian market where a teacher of an how to be an Aussie class (former cricketer Brett Lee) falls for a on-the-move marketing Indian woman (British-Indian actress Tannishtha Chatterjee) but a whole lot of things get in their way, including their different cultural backgrounds. Typical stuff, nothing special and has a whole bunch of silly sub-plots not the least the whole 'how to be an Aussie' class. Lee, in his acting debut is OK but it canny casting as he far more popular in India than any Australian actor is. Watchable but very predictable stuff if you've ever watched a Bollywood movie.

3rd Night is a thriller where a couple move to the country to get away from it but on the first night they notice someone watching them, then their cat disappears. It soon becomes clear someone wants them gone, but who and why. Passable movie and at barely 70 minutes, it's a quick watch but it has a silly ending and the motive for the crime isn't really given.

One Night is a short film I've had lying about for years that I finally got around to capping. It's about a bunch of horny women trying to get some action or just some attention on a weekend night out. Directed by actress Alexandra Schepisi who also stars. Some brief nudity from Alexis Porter who was also naked in Rats and Cats.
