Update for 30 August...

Angel of Mine is an Australian thriller where Lizzie (Noomi Rapace) is going through a bad time where her ex Mike (Luke Evans) decides to get full custody of their kid. At a party her son attends, she sees a young girl and instantly becomes obsessed with her and it turns out that she's the daughter of Claire (Yvonne Strahovski), a woman who introduces herself at the party. Lizzie attempts to worm her way into being close to the young girl who we find out is the spitting image of her dead daughter and over time, her behaviour becomes creepier and more obsessive as she becomes more convinced that Claire's daughter is her own. This takes a toll on her own life, as she gets sacked from her job and forgets about her son resulting in her family suggesting she be committed but Lizzie is completely convinced that Claire's daughter is her own and she will go to dangerous lengths to be proven correct. Creepy thriller that has a few very unsettling scenes and a great performance from Rapace and is definitely better than the director's previous movie Strangerland, also a creepy thriller revolving around a child. I will say that the ending is telegraphed fairly early on, so it's not much of a twist but other than that, Angel Of Mine is a fairly solid creepy movie.

Update for 27 August...

A few new movies. Some quick synopses:

Haunting On Fraternity Row is a horror thriller set during the biggest frat party of the year that goes bad when an evil force is unleashed and starts killing off the party's participants. Another in my absolute favourite genre of found footage horror movies where people decide to keep filming when they should be doing anything but; there's one scene at the end that is utterly stupid in this regard. It has plenty of hot chicks throughout but that is the only recommendation and even then Shanley Caswell keeps buttoned up which is very disappointing.

Jacob's Ladder is a remake of the 1990 psychological thriller about an army vet who starts to lose his mind after returning from the war. Completely unnecessary remake but at least it travels a slightly different path even if it is not as good as the original.

Tone-Deaf is a thriller about a young woman (Amamda Crew) who dumps her cheating boyfriend and after being sacked from her job is convinced to go on an expensive weekend away by herself to recharge and ends up at a house owned by a psychotic killer (Robert Patrick) who has set his sights on the woman. From the director of Excision and Trash Fire, two movies that I'm a big fan of but Tone-Deaf isn't is as good as either of those movies and it has an unnecessary boomers vs. millenials angle. It's not without it's charm, there's a decent running joke about the woman's piano prowess, Kim Delaney as the woman's hippie mother is fun but it just doesn't click in the same way that those two movie did.

Redux time again and I've finally gotten around to recapping D.O.A: Dead Or Alive in HD. Found an open matte source of the movie which like last week's update with Get Over It, shows more than the widescreen Bluray does including Holly showing a hint of bum crack in her shower scene that you don't see in the widescreen release. You also see more the bikini scenes particularly the volleyball scene. I've also included some deleted scenes from the Bluray but they are in DVD quality and fairly shitty quality at that. A bit more bikini stuff from the volleyball scene but nothing really exciting.

Update for 21 August...

A couple of new movies. Some quick synopses:

Driven is a dramatised look at the real life story of the friendship between an FBI informant and car developer John DeLorean who is trying to get his own car, the DeLorean up and running but runs into many issues including a big money problem which the FBI informant can help him with while finally getting the opportunity to rat out a big fish and being able to live a normal life. May be a true story but it's fairly unbelievable that DeLorean makes a lot of decisions based on what this dumb arse FBI informant tells him but it does suggest why he ended up arrested in a baffling attempt to make quick money. Otherwise the movie is OK and it does have Erin Moriarty from Blood Father, Captain Fantastic and The Boys show her breasts, so how can I hate it?

Seaside is a thriller where an heir decides to marry his girlfriend (Ariana DeBose) whose mother has a history with the heir's family, after inheriting a seaside house from his father and can get more money if he has children which his girlfriend is happy to do. Meanwhile, he bumps into a former flame (Steffanie Leigh) who is unhappy with him back in town and starts stalking them. The girlfriend seems reluctant to marry the heir but ends up doing so and that's when things get tricky. Twist-filled thriller that gets more ludicrous by the minute as yet another twist occurs. The girlfriend's plan becomes so convoluted that it turns the movie into a complete mess that is only made worse when it comes obvious that she's going to get away with it when Blind Freddy would work out her increasingly obvious motive.

Update for 20 August...

Been getting into late 80s B-horror movies recently so I've capped some of ones I've come across. Some quick synopses:

Curse 2: The Bite is a horror thriller about a man and woman (Jill Schoelen) who are going to California to live and decide to go a certain short cut that they are warded off going, but they fail to heed the warning which results in the man getting bitten by a particularly vicious snake. Well even after getting anti-venom from a dubious source (a surprisingly helpful travelling salesman played by Jamie Farr aka Corporal Klinger from M*A*S*H), the snake's venom turns the man incredibly aggressive and his arm seems to turn into a snake. Not a good movie and the longer it goes the more ludicrous it gets including the involvement of a hyper-religious family which is an annoying diversion.

Deadly Dreams is a thriller about a writer who is haunted by the shooting deaths of his parents, so much so he begins to have vivid dreams where he is being murdered. His brother and his friend think he's crazy and not even a new girlfriend (Juliette Cummins) can stop the dreams. Are his dreams real and who is causing them to make the man in danger? OK movie, helped by the usual sleazy performance from Xander Berkeley as the brother and a decent twist that it ends up doubling down on it.

Headhunter is a serial killer thriller with a slight difference as a voodoo spirit finds its way to America and starts slaughtering people mainly from the local Nigerian community and two cops are tasked with stopping the demon as it turns the focus onto the cop's families but this seems to be above the cops ability as this spirit is pretty much unstoppable. Basically a by-the-numbers serial killer thriller with a savage edge, but is mostly forgettable.

The Brain is a horror comedy about a boy who is on the verge of being kicked out of school so he is sent to a doctor who is the host of the biggest show on TV and it turns out that the doctor has developed a living brain that feasts on humans and sends subliminal messages through the TV. Narrowly escaping death after leaving the facility, he finds himself back there and after escaping, he goes on the run and then the bodies start piling up and he's being accused of killing them. Now with the help of his girlfriend (Cynthia Preston), he must find a way to stop the doctor and the killer brain before everyone becomes mindless zombies or dead. OK attempt at a fairly obvious satire but is too silly to work or maybe it's not silly enough.

90s weekend update spills into Monday with a couple of movies starring Meg Ryan. Never seen Flesh And Bone before, basically a drama about a vending machine salesman (Dennis Quaid) who travels from town to town servicing his machines and has a woman in each town while living a life of solitude, which he is perfectly fine with. But he's about to meet two women who are going to bring an shocking incident from his past back into focus. First, he spies a grifter (Gwyneth Paltrow) who happens to pop up from time to time. Then he comes across the impulsive Kay (Meg Ryan) who drags him into her whirlwind of a life but she has a secret past that is connected to the salesman and that shocking incident, so secret that even she is unclear of it. Not a bad little movie but forces the drama in a very contrived way that breaks any tension that could have developed and comes to an obvious ending although there's enough going on that stops it from being a miss.

Another couple of redux series, one from the early days and one from 12 years ago, so still from a while ago. Both movies were originally in 2.35 widescreen but I've found 1.85 widescreen or open matte copies of both of today's update. I wasn't going to post it in the case of Get Over It as there's something small blurred out at the top of open matte version but as this version shows quite a bit more, particular in the Kirsten Dunst/Mila Kunis bikini scene, I decided to post both versions. Strangely of those teen movies from that period, Get Over It seems to be the most neglected, so I doubt we'll get a better version.

Update for 14 August...

3 new movies in today's update. Some quick synopses:

Incident In A Ghostland is a horror thriller where a mother and her two daughters inherit a house and when they get there, they are attacked by a group of weirdos that were living there and barely come out it alive. 10 or so years later, one of the daughters is a famous author while the other daughter has locked herself downstairs in a state of despair. The author daughter comes back to visit and becomes entangled in her sister's world and maybe the hell hasn't ended at all. Intriguing thriller from the director of Martyrs which is actually pretty good.

Perception is a thriller about a man who is offered a free reading from a psychic (Meera Rohit Kumbhani) and it uncovers a lost love that he hasn't gotten over, so he hires the psychic to channel his dead wife while spending a stack of money, not necessarily his own, but it turns out the dead woman wasn't his wife and he was stalking her and her spirit is restless and wants revenge. OK, I guess.

Disappearance is a thriller about a husband and wife (Cortney Palm) who celebrate their 10 year anniversary by going on a boat ride, bringing along his assistant and also a waitress from the coffee shop (Jemma Dallender) who is apparently having an affair with the husband. Well, the husband goes missing and the three remaining are questioned by a detective as to what happened, but as the detective gets closer, the more complicated the motive seems to be. Movie takes ages to get going and then lingers until a confusing ending, all in under 80 minutes. Baffling... Also, a movie starring Cortney Palm and Jemma Dallender where neither get naked. Very disappointing...

Update for 12 August...

A couple of late 80s movies starring Jennifer Jason Leigh that I hadn't seen before, hell in the case of Heart Of Midnight, I'd never heard of. Heart Of Midnight is a very of the time thriller about a woman (Jennifer Jason Leigh) who takes over a night club her late uncle was renovating and finds the place has a weird energy where weird things happen around the place. When she's attacked by a group of thugs (including a young Steve Buscemi), she inadvertently invites a world of trouble including a mysterious but apparently friendly man (Peter Coyote) and a house that seems to be turning against her, so it's going to take all of her will to withstand in her already fragile mental state. Movie has dated pretty badly, some of the scenes and psychological inferences wouldn't work well by today's standards and it's twist involving paedophilia more than a little dodgy but there is stuff throughout the movie that also works, Coyote's character is intriguing, Frank Stallone manages to get a jam session going and the movie is scored by Yanni. Last Exit To Brooklyn is a fairly interesting look at 1950s Brooklyn during a brutal union strike with a surprising amount of stuff involving transvestites and a lead character played by Stephen Lang who is struggling with his sexuality. The ending of the movie is absolutely depressing, hardly surprising as it's based on a Hubert Selby (Requiem For A Dream) book of short stories. Interestingly, Patricia Arquette was originally cast in the Jennifer Jason Leigh role but pulled out when she became pregnant (her brother plays the main transvestite), so it would've been interesting to see what she would've made of that scene below.

Update for 11 August...

The 90s weekend update decides to make it a Peter Greenaway weekend with a couple of his 90s movies, The Baby of Mâcon and The Pillow Book. I hadn't seen The Baby of Mâcon before, which is basically a filmed play about a woman (Julia Ormond) who becomes the virginal mother of her brother who is a magical child but it is predetermined that it is going to end badly for her and a number of other people including the child if she tries to or does lose her virginity. Has an annoying thing where there's a meta-narrative going on where the actors know they are actors and talk about how they are in a play. For the most part it's watchable as far as Greenaway movies go but it's tough going for the most part. I'd seen The Pillow Book on SBS back in the day but barely remember it beyond the basic plot. It starts off attempting to describe it's premise and takes a while to get going but once Ewan McGregor comes along and helps Vivian Wu figure out what she really wants to get out of her love of calligraphy, the movie starts to tick over. Overall, I didn't mind it and found it more intriguing the longer it went.

Update for 10 August...

A couple of redux series, both films directed by Peter Greenaway, an incredibly arty director who doesn't mind showing his actors naked, so there's always plenty of nudity. Not an easy director to get into but The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover is probably his most accessible movie and even then it's a bit of a trial. It does open with a character being force fed dog shit and it features a lot of physical and verbal abuse from The Thief (Michael Gambon), a character who is basically a thug who abuses everyone in his radius and walks a tightrope between hilarious and utterly replusive. There's quite a bit of nudity from Helen Mirren and it has a fairly considerable plot for a Greenaway movie and then there's that ending which is really something else. It's probably the only movie from Greenaway that I like and seen more than once and it's definitely the only movie of his you should ever watch.

I capped Nightwatching back in 2008 and I capped it from a Russian source as it was the only way to get it for a while and then forgot about it even when I got a HD source of the movie years ago. Anyway, finally gotten around to upgrading it and finding out who the actress was I couldn't work out (it was Fiona O'Shaughnessy).

A couple of new movies. Some quick synopses:

Coyote Lake is a thriller about a mother and daughter (Camila Mendes) running a bed and breakfast on a bordertown where with the help of a local idiot they bump off cartel members, usually coyotes (people who help refugees cross the border) and steal their money/valuables so that they can move away to some place better. One day, two cartel members turn up with one of them shot in the leg and they force the mother and daughter to help them. The daughter falls for one of the guys who promises to take her away from the place but as things get desperate, the mother concocts a plan to bump off the two men and the daughter must decide who she trusts more. Fairly basic thriller that is pretty obvious but otherwise not bad.

Zoo is a Danish comedy/drama set in England where Karen (Zoë Tapper) attempts to separate from John (Ed Speleers) right when a zombie apocalypse breaks out, stranding them in their apartment. The try to get along even when they accept a couple of stragglers into their apartment and over time they form a stronger love for one another than they had before. If only time wasn't running out... Alright movie, the zombie stuff is more a setting than the focus and while the ending is kind of predictable, it's actually fairly sweet.

Update for 4 August...

90s weekend once more with a few horror movies/thrillers (yes, I know Chopping Mall is from the 80s). Hellmaster is a horror thriller about a professor who gathers a group of students to restart an experiment that ended in disaster 20 years previous but of course he's doing it for nefarious means and unleashes some long forgotten drug controlled freaks on the group, killing them one by one. More a case of style over substance with a lot more time spent on the art direction and special effects than the story but an OK movie with some interesting scenes. Chopping Mall from 1986 is a total B-movie about killer robots bumping off a bunch of horny idiots who throw a party in shopping mall furniture store. Fairly hacky with the idiots knocked off as couples, some pretty nasty deaths but a couple of funny cameos from Mary Woronov and Paul Bartel, apparently reprising their characters from the cult classic Eating Raoul, which is probably the best thing about this movie. Well, maybe the nudity too...
