Update for 25 September...

Seen that the incredibly obscure Australian cult film The Masturbating Gunman was recently released by boutique distributor Severin on Bluray in America despite it being not available in Australia at all, so it's time to finally have a look at it.

The Masturbating Gunman aka Masked Avenger Versus Ultra-Villain in the Lair of the Naked Bikini is a 1997 exploitation thriller where The Masked Avenger (Robin Brennan) is a man who helps people with a particular set of problems. He can find any woman in the world just by smelling their underwear, which he demonstrates when he finds a woman who has being kidnapped to be sold off to sex traffickers. But he has one weakness: He can't help but masturbate when he sees a woman. Meanwhile Gunta (Peter Beitans), has just been let out of prison after 12 years and immediately takes control of his crew, who are listless and broke. He also proclaims that he is going to make a son with the most pure woman in the city. Turns out all the women are impure with even school girls being trained to be table-top dancers (there's a 90s reference if ever there was one) but they finally find a virgin worthy of bearing Gunta's son: Sister Mary (Nene Powell), who is then kidnapped and brought to Gunta. There's just one problem and it's a big one; Mary's brother is The Masked Avenger and she just happened to leave a pair of her panties behind before being kidnapped. He finds her panties but is still clueless as to her whereabouts. As Gunta prepares for his moment of triumph, Sister Mary decides that the best defence is attack and lets herself be ravaged by Gunta's crew, ridding her of her purity and while she's at it, stealing all of their guns. The Masked Avenger tracks down Gunta but he is not going down without a fight as he has an array of sexy women to distract our hero.

Completely ridiculous low budget exploitation movie that works because it has a silly idea and just runs with it with glee. Lots of unrepentant silliness, very 90s (some of the references are the most 90s things I've ever seen) and a result that delivers exactly what it sets out to do. You could easily nit-pick it's faults but why bother, it's clunkiness is part of the charm. If you're into exploitation, this movie is a perfectly fine watch.

Also below is a HD redux of the director's next movie, Sensitive New Age Killer which with it's higher budget and being far better looking technically ended up getting a cinema release locally. Also worth a look, particularly if you are into 90s Hong Kong action movies, which it is clearly influenced by. It also briefly features The Masturbating Gunman on TV during one scene.

Update for 21 September...

Moving away from Hong Kong for today's 90s update. Together & Alone is a 1997 low budget indie about a bunch of fringe dwellers in Hollywood desperate for that one break or another chance at the big time. OK movie, very talkie, a lot of desperation and it's chock full of actors who are sort of known character actors which helps with the authenticity of the movie. It has that feel that it could only have been made in 90s and the black and white cinematography helps with that feeling. Unsurprisingly, Quentin Tarantino (and a few of his hangers-on) are thanked in the end credits.

Also a couple of reduxes of 90s movies, one (Solomon And Gaenor) appearing on the site for the first time.

Update for 20 September...

One more Hong Kong movie for the 90s weekend update. Today's movie is the 1996 erotic comedy Yu Pui Tsuen III, where the lowest rung secret agent 000 (Elvis Tsui) gets the job to see what is going on at a local brothel that is attracting all the local men. After viewing some of the goings on, he decides to go deeper under cover and make a book of his viewings while gaining the confidence of a couple of prostitutes. Then his bossy wife (Strawberry Yuk-Mui Yeung) gets wind of what he is doing and forces him to shave his head, which apparently signals adulterer and also makes him wear a chastity belt that clamps onto his dick if he gets hard and you can imagine the hi-jinks that ensues. Completely silly movie with lots of sex and is played for laughs and this one has a few. One scene involving 000 trying to hang himself only to snag the noose onto the erection of a local pervert hiding up a tree is pretty damn ridiculous and that's the level we're working at. Not a great movie but it delivers exactly what it sets out to achieve.

I will say that I'm fairly sure of the name of the actresses in the below scenes but there's so little information about this movie and I've basically pieced it together from the meagre sources available on-line. If I'm wrong, feel free to correct me.

Update for 19 September...

90s weekend continues unabated with another movie from Hong Kong. This time it's the 1996 satirical comedy Viva Erotica about a struggling film director Sing (Leslie Cheung) who begrudgingly decides to direct an 'erotic' movie and becomes frustrated which starts to affect his relationship with his policewoman girlfriend May (Karen Mok), who doesn't know he's making such a movie. It's an interesting movie which satires the making of Hong Kong movies in general with a few laughs, some familiar names and a fair bit of nudity from Shu Qi, who's pretty good as a pampered actress who's sleeping with the boss and refuses to nude scenes (for a while...) and causes issues for the director. Also Category III veteran Elvis Tsui shows surprising range as one of the actors. There's also a decent parody of the fast motion sex with two women scene from A Clockwork Orange. A pretty decent movie.

Update for 18 September...

A slight deviation from the 90s movies, well, one is from 1991 so... Being a few Australian movies that have been released on Bluray recently, so it's time to upgrade the videos for those movies. Both Nadia Tass/David Parker movies The Big Steal and Malcolm got the HD update just recently by Umbrella and both look pretty good. Maybe other Tass/Parker movies will get a release locally, let alone a Bluray release like Rikky And Pete, which has only been released on DVD overseas. I don't know where The Time Guardian Bluray comes from, doesn't seem to be local as the DVD has been out-of-print since the late 2000s. Unexpected upgrade but a nice surprise.

Update for 17 September...

Another 90s Hong Kong for today's update. The Untold Story is an odd serial killer thriller that oscillates between ugly violence and baffling slapstick comedy that feels wildly out-of-place. It's almost like two wildly different movies have been fused together to come up with this monstrosity. Some scenes are just flat out exploitation; the scene below is one example and another which graphically recounts the murder of a family of seven. There's another scene involving piss drinking which strangely feels at home with the other scenes while a sub-plot involving cannibalism almost feels like it's in good taste by comparison and leads to an incredibly ridiculous scene where days later the cops who ate the human filled dumplings are told of what they ate and then proceed to vomit it out when it would've already been expunged from the body. Mixed in with the exploitation is some sexist comedy where a group of bozo male cops comment on their 'ugly' female partner and she makes pathetic attempts to fool them into finding her 'sexy'. Frankly, when the movie dumps the lame comedy and focuses on being purely exploitative, The Untold Story becomes a better movie, still terrible but at least it's not as terrible.

Interestingly, I went down a rabbit hole finding out more info on Julie Lee and it's a helluva salacious story involving kinky sex including filming real sex scenes, multiple husbands, quitting acting, committing suicide then magically turning up as the female lead in Michael Madsen movie a few years later, apparently not dead. Very strange...

Update for 16 September...

90s updates keep on rolling and today we're off to Hong Kong (and Japan and America but actually Canada).

There's been quite a few 90s Hong Kong movies that have gotten a Bluray release recently, today's update features another, Black Cat, a 1991, um, incredibly flagrant rip-off of La Femme Nikita to the point where I wonder if Luc Besson called in the lawyers. You know the plot to La Femme Nikita; this movie is pretty much exactly the same. Petulant girl (Jade Leung) is in America (actually filmed in Canada so a fair portion of the movie is actually in English) where she gets attacked and beats up a couple of guys and then in a stupor kills a cop. She goes to jail, escapes and is caught and taken in by a mysterious organisation who turns murderers into contract-for-hire killers against their will. Well, the girl excels and is let out of where she is housed but is forced to be a hired killer. In between times, she meets a man and falls in love and desperately tries to keep that side of her life secret, which is wishful thinking. If you want a half-hour shorter La Femme Nikita with no nuance and barely any crisis, just plot, then you've got Black Cat. The movie is so fast it feels like it's playing at double speed to the point the movie almost forgets to have an ending and quickly tosses off something which suggests a sequel, which actually happened (sadly not on Bluray). So, if you want La Femme Nikita with an Asian woman, you can't go past... oh wait there was the TV series Nikita, with Maggie Q which is better than this shameless rip-off.

Update for 15 September...

Still with the 90s updates including a HD redux from the movie Jude.

Waterland is an odd misfire of a movie that is set in England and then for some reason Pittsburgh where an unmotivated history teacher in Pittsburgh (Jeremy Irons) divurges from the curriculum and tells his class a story of his childhood which is strangely more alluring to the class than history despite being mostly boring. Then there's the plot which is more of a sub-plot where his wife kidnaps a baby from the shops and when the teacher finds out, they just take the baby back without fuss. Just a strange, tonally off movie that promises an engrossing story but it peters out in the final act with the teacher resigning and not finishing his story to the class but we, the audience, get to see a graphic abortion, so it's probably best the class don't know how it ends. The movie feels like it was trying to be an Oscar contender but ends up being an also-ran although it's not quite as bad as a similar Jeremy Irons' Oscar bait movie from the same time, The House Of The Spirits, which is a disaster of a movie.

Waterland is also the debut movie of Lena Headey, who plays Jeremy Irons' wife as a teenage girl and has a couple of nude scenes along the way. Also the debut for the director's daughter, Maggie Gyllenhaal who briefly appears as a student.

Update for 13 September...

90s weekend continues.

Ring Of Fire is a 1991 martial arts thriller where a doctor Johnny (Don 'The Dragon' Wilson) falls for Julie (Maria Ford) who hates that her fiance Brad (Dale Jacoby) has gotten closer to her crazy, martial arts obsessed brother Chuck (Vince Murdocco) and gotten him involved in the underground fight scene. Slowly but surely Julie falls for Johnny and rethinks her marriage to Brad. Meanwhile, Johnny's cousin gets himself into trouble with the local white boys and various people get jumped until it escalates to street warfare which ends up involving Chuck and Brad. Then Julie dumps Brad for Johnny and Johnny's cousin is killed in a ring of fire fight and then the racism stops being casual and becomes the only thing until a baffling ending which I'm not sure is an ending. The movie is fairly corny and there's a bunch of nude scenes from Lisa Saxton that feel shoehorned in until the street war boils over and then what was a few bad jokes and occasional slurs becomes nothing but racist antagonism in the final act that creeps up so quickly you hardly recognise the change in tone. It's still less racist than the other Don 'The Dragon' Wilson movie I've watched, Red Sun Rising but it's a close call in the end.

I also watched the sequel to Ring Of Fire, subtitled Blood And Steel and there's nothing to cap in that movie. Blood And Steel turns into a flagrant rip-off of The Warriors in the L.A. underground and all the racism of the final act of the first movie is forgotten as the two sides band together (and seem rather harmonious considering how the previous movie ends) to get Julie back from a bunch of violent robbers who are pissed off Johnny foiled their heist. They even get help from a black veteran who comes in handy at navigating the underground. At least this movie see Don 'The Dragon' Wilson fights a fair bit in this movie unlike only doing the climatic fight in the first movie. And I'm always up for a 'Warriors' knock-off even if it's as flagrant as this is.

Update for 10 September...

Being a while since I've capped a movie day of release.

The Voyeurs is a thriller where Pippa (Sydney Sweeney) and Thomas (Justice Smith) move into a new apartment and instantly notice that they can see their neighbours Seb (Ben Hardy) and Julia (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), who are having sex. This piques their interest in the couple across the way but they find out that Seb, a photographer, has a habit of seducing his subjects, unbeknownst to Julia. After having sex watching Seb have sex with a model, they decide to up their voyeurism and decide they want to listen in to their household. They get the perfect opportunity to place a hidden microphone when they gatecrash Seb and Julia's Halloween party. Pippa and Thomas then watch and listen to Seb and Julia's relationship fall apart and Pippa becomes ensconced in watching them from afar and decides that she would like to help Julia, particularly after it looks like Seb strikes her. Pippa unexpectedly gets the opportunity when Julia comes to her work as an eye doctor to get new glasses and Julia decides to get Pippa's phone number so that they can get together. At a spa/sauna, Julia expresses wanting to do more with her life and some sadness about it and Pippa almost tells her of her voyeurism of their lives but she doesn't. One night, Pippa 'hacks' into Julia's wi-fi printer and tells her that Seb is cheating on her and she and Thomas watch Julia almost stab Seb which causes Thomas to tell Pippa to cut off all contact her Julia. The next morning, Pippa sees Julia has killed herself and Thomas decides he's had enough of Pippa's interference and leaves her. But Pippa cannot stop looking at Seb and one night she watches him go to a bar and decides to join him. He takes her back to his apartment and Seb uses his usual tricks to seduce Pippa but she is a more than willing participant. Thomas comes home and see her having sex with Seb and then all hell breaks loose. Obviously influenced by Rear Window, The Voyeurs starts out as an interesting thriller but after Pippa and Thomas bust up, the movie stops making sense and goes for nonsensical thrills and ridiculous twists instead of something sensible and blows any intrigue it had built up until that point. It's a shame because there was potential for something decent. Sweeney is good and has to do a lot of the heavy lifting but you could see her falling for Seb a mile off and that contributes to the film's downfall. It does lead to an all-time great nude scene from Sydney Sweeney, so I'm definitely not complaining. Not bad, just nowhere near as good as it should have been.

Update for 5 September...

More Australian short films including some surprises like another nude scene from Asher Keddie, from 2003 so maybe her earliest. Also the only nudity as far as I know from Cassandra Magrath, she hasn't really done too many sexy scenes so this is a definite surprise. Can never work out how old she is because she played teenagers well into the 2000s as she does in this 2003 short but when I was recently looking through the 1996 movie Hotel de Love to add it to the nude guide, there she is playing a 20-something receptionist for the hotel.

Was looking into Geography Of The Hapless Heart to see if I can find where I got it from and it's disappeared from online and the director died recently so I doubt we'll see it again, so lucky I got a copy of it when I did.

Update for 4 September...

One of the things that the slow-down in new movies/TV has done is that I've been able to go through a whole bunch of Australian/New Zealand short films that I never had the time/could be bothered to look at. What I've found is that there is a very low yield for stuff to cap from short films, something like 1 in 30 shorts have a sexy scene worth capping and the odds are even less for a nude scene.

Anyway, here's a bunch of short films I found including some I got a while ago and are now not available online, so good thing I've been collecting them for a while. I found 32EE (and a number of other short films) when a film school showcased all their stuff about 5 or so years ago but that has since been removed and replaced with a more generic YouTube page with a lot less stuff.

Not much nudity in the below videos although it does feature the only nude scenes I've seen of Louisa Mignone and maybe Kestie Morassi which would be a genuine surprise as she has been more than reluctant. We only see the top of her bottom but as we don't really see her face, it might not be her as she has a history of using body doubles. But, I think it might be her as the brief hint of face seen looks a lot like her.
