Just a quickie I've been ruminating over for a few weeks.

Trespass is a home invasion thriller where a couple Kyle and Sarah Miller (Nicolas Cage and Nicole Kidman) are invaded by a group of masked bandits posing as police officers. The bandits want what is in Kyle's over-the-top safe and seeing as though he's a diamond dealer, it's pretty safe to assume there's diamonds and maybe some money. But, Kyle keeps stalling them and trying to make dealing, agitating the bandits. When Kyle finally opens the safe, it is completely empty, which sets off the bandits (led by Ben Mendelsohn and including Cam Gigandet, Dash Mihok and Jordana Spiro) and leads to a mad panic as they scramble to get anything they can. Also, Kyle and Sarah's teenage daughter Avery (Liana Liberato) has snuck out of the house to go to a party and has come home amidst the chaos. Over the night, all of the family's secrets will be unfurled (including that the family is not well off at all and is in heavy debt) as the situation gets more tense and the mad scramble for whatever of value can be found. Typical B-thriller with a surprisingly A-list cast and director which suggests somebody overshot somewhere, but the film ain't half bad. Cage is in form here, bizarrely trying to bargain his way out of everything to the point where he seems to want his own cut of the heist. Kidman is in a rare disposable role, which makes me wonder where her career's going (following on from her blink and you'll miss role in Just Go With It). Good to see Ben Mendelsohn get some Hollywood love again. If I do have a problem with the movie, it is the overall happy ending Hollywood-ness of it, hell, it's very similar to the Bruce Willis vehicle Hostage (also a pretty solid thriller). If this film was made in Europe, you would guarantee it would be a depressing, family members raped and murdered extravaganza ala Secuestrados (a film I'm still getting over...). Maybe somewhere in between would make Trespass a superior thriller instead of a passable timewaster.

There will be a redux Friday in about 12 hours from two films with more murder and mayhem and women being raped. I don't know what attracts me to these films. I'm really a nice person, honest...

Update for 28 December...

Some more dumping. Just a quick vids and caps today.

Bran Nue Dae is a musical comedy set in the late 60s about a young Aboriginal boy Willie who is being forced by his mother to become a priest. But, Willie has major crush on Rosie (Jessica Mauboy), his good friend who wants to be a singer. Willie finally gets up the nerve to ask Rosie out to a movie, but doesn't make it on time and the movie is rained out before he can get there. The next day, he is taken to his new school in Perth by the head priest (Geoffrey Rush). The school is strict and after he takes the rap for his friends over stolen food and drink, he skips out on the school and heads back to get with Rosie. Along the way he meets a drifter who is actually his uncle (Ernie Dingo) who goes with him. They meet a hippie couple (including Missy Higgins), who help him get back and also a loose woman (Deborah Mailman) who may have her way with Willie before he gets to Rosie. All the while, the priest is in desperate pursuit. Let me get this out there that I really don't like musicals. Mainly because the plots are so cheesy and an excuse to get to the next song and Bran Nue Dae's plot is incredibly cheesy. And I would've excused this if the ending wasn't such a steaming pile of horse shit. It is so cringeworthy, that I was embarrassed to watch it. Sadly, I saw it coming from a mile off and still didn't avoid it. I get all the cultural harmony stuff, but the ending is just flat out patronising. This film was popular with Australian audiences a couple of years back? Seriously?

Bah! I can't get this horrible taste out of my mouth...

Update for 26 December...

Things are incredibly slow this time of year in regards to traffic, so it's time to do some dumping...

Needle is an Australian horror film set in Perth following a bunch of friends who all go to the same university. After the death of his father, Ben (Michael Dorman) sold off most of his father's belongings, but he decides to keep the last batch of stuff which includes a mysterious box. At a party, he shows all his friends the box. The next morning, when he is about to show it too experts, the box is stolen. That's when the killings start and they are caused by someone using the box to commit some sort of murder by voodoo and these deaths are particularly gruesome. At the same time, his estranged brother Marcus (Travis Fimmel), a crime scene photographer, reenters his life. Together, they attempt to work out who is using the box to perform the killings, before the girl that likes him, Mary (Tahyna Tozzi) becomes the next victim. From the maker of two terrible horror thrillers Prey and Crush, this film is front stacked with well known young Australian actors and features cameos from the likes of John Jarratt, Ben Mendelsohn and Jane Badler. But, Needle is still quite a silly film. The death scenes are very nasty. The motive behind the deaths barely credible and the whole Needle things pretty laughable. Jessica Marais is a highlight as she sees the level of the film and adds some surprising vigour to her role. She almost singlehandedly saves the final act, but alas no, it ends in a howler that's flat out laughable. Oh dear...

Belladonna is an Australian/Polish co-production set for the most part in Melbourne and follows two narratives set in different times. Luke (Todd MacDonald) is a doctor who is suffering from insomnia, which could be caused by the pressure of his upcoming to Katherine (Kate Kendall). When he does sleeping, he is having dreams set in some sort of medieval times about a Polish woman Jadwiga (Katia Mazurek) who is torn between her ailing husband and her lover. As his dreams unravel, Katherine is lost in preparations for the wedding while Luke is feeling plain lost. Then he meets Amelia (Katie Jean Harding), who looks strikingly like Jadwiga. Later, she visits his doctor's surgery and he treats her and finds that she has breast cancer. It is from here that he and Amelia will become closer while Katherine seems to change in some sort of bridezilla (for want of a better word... this feeble mind). Hmm, this film is a very artful look at a man trying to find meaning in his life during a very chaotic period in it. Something interesting is going on here, maybe not wholly realised, but seeing Luke look for something more in his life than the usual stuff and finding it in a non-sexual relationship with a woman he barely knows, is something you don't see often in films today. This film definitely needs more love, particularly here in Australia.

Update for 22 December...

I've been on a bit of a hiatus during December as life has become unusually busy. Things should pick up again from now on with plenty of new stuff on the horizon.

Honey 2 is the sequel to the 2003 Jessica Alba vehicle (and no, she doesn't make an appearance, sadly) and follows jailbird and former dance star Maria (Katerina Graham from The Vampire Diaries) who is released into the custody of Honey's mother. Maria takes a job at a local convenience store and she spies Tina (Seychelle Gabriel from The Last Airbender) stealing some jewellery from the store. Tina runs from the store before Maria can get the jewellery back, but she sees Tina again as she is in a dance crew that is using the facilities at the Honey Daniels Dance Studio. They are a rag tag crew run by rich kid Brandon, but have plenty of potential. When her former boyfriend tries to recruit her back into the (now champion) crew even though he is responsible for getting her into jail, Maria decides that she will help choreograph and join the now named HD crew and hopefully beat her former boyfriend's crew and win the $100,000 prize money so that Tina and her sister's grandma can get the medical help she needs and the further prize of the choreographer getting a full time gig. It ain't going to be easy, especially with Tina's standoffish behaviour towards Maria and eventually leaving the team and joining the opposition. Also, Maria and Brandon fall in love. Oh wow, I'm still addicted to these tame girlie-girl films and this one is as low rent as it comes. Just typing out those cliches above gave me a headache. It begins with a prison dance fight scene and from there I knew this was going to be a long haul. Add the appearance of Mario López and Audrina Patridge and this movie couldn't get any lower. At least the original had Honey going for something that at least seemed tangible and there was plenty of struggle along the way and about 10 times less cheesier. This film just gobbles down the cheese and asks for more until it becomes unashamedly predictable. This exact film has been over and over again in the last few years and sadly, we'll see it again soon enough. Bah! I think it's time to move on...

Australian Classics for 14 December...

A couple of mid-80s genre films from the vault today.

Next of Kin is a 1982 horror film (not the late 80s Patrick Swayze classic) about Linda (Jackie Kerin) who returns to her old home after the death of her mother. The house, which her mother ran as a retirement home, is on hard times and to add to the misery, the old folks are dropping off in mysterious ways. Also, all the workers seems to acting mysteriously and talking behind Linda's back. Linda is also having dreams from her past to an incident that happened in the house. She is convinced someone is killing the old folks, but no one believes her, not even her boyfriend (John Jarratt). So, it's up to Linda to find out what's going on before she becomes next. Heavily influenced by recently made The Shining (well, if there's anyone to be influenced by, it's Kubrick), this is a gem of a haunted house thriller with some absolutely surreal touches including that famous final shot. It is a genuinely creepy film like The Shining and has held up extremely well. Well worth a look if you can find it.

Incident at Raven's Gate is a 1988 sci-fi thriller from one of my favourite Australian directors Rolf de Heer, that is set in South Australia about a series of mysterious happenings in the local area. Eddie (Steve Vidler) is a former jailbird and still a bit of a troublemaker who lives with his brother Richard (Ritchie Singer) and his wife Rachel (Celine Griffin) working on their farm. Rachel has a major crush on Eddie, but Eddie resists while having a fling with a local barmaid (Saturday Rosenberg). Local hardnosed cop Skinner (Vincent Gil) wants to put Eddie away so that he can have the barmaid for himself. One night while Skinner chases Eddie, both cars stop dead in the middle of nowhere. This is the start of what is going to change everything for everyone. Eddie finally relents to Rachel's advances. Eddie sees bright lights in a neighbouring property that almost stops him dead. Eddie and Skinner tussle again, this time at the newly abandoned house down the road, this time, the bright lights bring mayhem which changes Skinner into some kind of psychotic creature. Richard finds out about Eddie and Rachel and even though they fight, they must band together to stop this thing. Interesting little alien incident thriller that's a little more arty than the usual (that Rolf de Heer for you), but isn't quite successful in conveying what exactly is going on. But there's something intriguing going on nonetheless.

Oh, and thanks for all your comments on the 10th anniversary both on and off site, much appreciated.

10th Anniversary Special...

Well, they said you'd never make it...

Ten (or so) years ago, I was a collector like many of you, but I got bored of it, mainly because the same old stuff was been done by the same people and there were things that I wanted and nobody was doing them. At my then work, they had a pretty decent video capture setup and good old Ulead Video Studio and I worked out that I could do what the collage makers were doing. So, after a while of experimentation, I finally made my first collage in July 2001 of Miranda Otto from Love Serenade and posted it on various forums to very little response... It was OK, sure it wasn't the seamless masses I create today, but it was a start. I went back and experimented a bit more, hired out a few more films, took out numerous frames from them and played around with the quality. 2001 was also the year that DVDs finally took off in Australia and I was able to afford to get a DVD drive so I could rip DVDs and take what I wanted later, just as I did in the update today.

While bored at work on December 6 2001, I created the Yahoo! Group Johnny Moronic Capturing, which still exists today. The goal was to release a series every week, which I did until April 2002 and resulted in some interest. During May 2002, I had a rethink of everything and decided it was time to make a site and did so over at FortuneCity, which was a mainstay for the next year until I got an offer to host the site on a private server, which I took up. I even had room to start making better videos, sure they were early DivX3 monstrosities, but they were as good as was going around at the time. But, upon the release of rare DVD quality videos of Naomi Watts from Gross Misconduct in Feburary 2003, I had 4 times the viewers and the site's bandwidth and that was the end of that idea. No more videos as I trudged back to FortuneCity. The bandwidth issue would become a major obstacle that I'm still battling with today.

By 2005, things had to change. Some by myself, others were forced upon me. I started doing seamless collages as my skills were developing at quick rate. The early seamless stuff is a fair way off today's stuff, but it's not all bad. In November 2005, FortuneCity shut down the site and I had to make a choice. The early blogs were a ramshackle compared to today. Free websites and storage sites were massively restrictive and I was growing rapidly. So, I decided to fork out some money and start up the site you are on today - johnnymoronic.com - and everything changed for the better. I could actually store all of my collages at the one place. And I was able to make decent quality videos again.

In the last 6 years, this site has grown rapidly and so has it's popularity. In 2005, I was averaging around 500 visitors a day. Today, the site regularly has more than 5000 visitors a day. There is around 300GB of material available including ten of thousands of collages, well over 5000 videos including thousands of HD videos and around 2000 actresses captured. And the site can use as much as a terabyte of bandwidth a DAY.

Today, the goal of the site to be a point of difference to all the other sites out there continues to be achieved. While I love a hot Hollywood actress like everyone else, Australia (and other countries) has numerous beautiful actresses that don't get much attention and I hope to continue to bring this to you. In 2009, I made it a goal to capture as many Australian films as possible, going back into areas that even I have neglected and ever since I have mined the depths including some far off sources to finally bring to viewing. There's still hundreds of Australian films and TV shows to capture (and just find...) and maybe I'll cap them all (hahahahahhah!!!). I will continue bring a wide selection of the best quality, who knows, one day I might get it right...

That ends an abridged version of the history of Johnny Moronic Capturing. One day I may tell it all.

Below is a comprehensive look at the Australian film Sleeping Beauty. I'm told that the Bluray of the movie will be released in the UK in February 2012. Hopefully, it'll have something more than this rather poor bare bones DVD release. If you want to read (or possibly re-read) my review of the film, you can so here.

Hope you've enjoyed the site as much as I have making stuff for it. You should see the backlog. I think it's time for outsourcing...

Australian Classics for 4 December...

Being distracted over the past week, so I haven't had the time to do stuff for the site. Probably be more distracted in the coming weeks too.

Dark Age is a 1987 horror thriller about a legendary crocodile with links to the Aboriginal Dreamtime that starts chomping down on the locals, mainly because he is sick of what the white man has done (it's not as terrible as it sounds, I need to write it better). After a night of hunting crocodiles, two poachers are killed and another poacher (Max Phipps) barely gets out alive. Steve Harris (John Jarratt) is a local park ranger who is called in to fix the problem. He is a man who is trying to balance the environmental concerns with the need to keep the area safe. When a young Aboriginal boy is swallowed whole by the same crocodile (a scene that is quite shocking...), panic sets in. The local council is worried about future developments and the area getting a bad name. The poachers go berserk and shoot up every crocodile they find, but not the one that did the damage. Also to complicate things for Steve, his former lover Cathy (Nikki Coghill) comes back to town. After another man is attacked, the council decides to go in all gung ho and kill the crocodile, but Steve is conflicted and consults local Aboriginal elders to help with a solution. The elder decides that to keep harmony with the land, they will capture the croc and take him to his homeland while killing another croc to make it look like that was the croc doing all the damage. The council tentatively agrees, but when the poacher, now one arm down after another tangle with the croc, finds out about this plan, he goes ballastic and decides that this croc must die. Up until it's DVD release in October, Dark Age has never been released in Australia thanks to all that distribution red tape. A shame as this is quite a good B-thriller that borrows heavily from Jaws. A solid story with some great action both on land and with the croc. Sure, the croc looks very fake, but that doesn't necessarily take away from the action. It's a far better film than that other recent croc film Rogue (also starring John Jarratt), which is a very disappointing film. Dark Age is well worth a look.

And there's Nikki Coghill again. Man, how good was she in the 80s? And, she's nipping out all over the place in this film. John Jarratt can't stop raving about her on the commentary. Hmmmm...

Also, 10th anniversary in 2 days. Don't have anything big planned, but I should have something.
