Update for 30 March...

Sunlight Jr. is a Florida set drama about Melissa (Naomi Watts) and Richie (Matt Dillon), a struggling couple who are living off Melissa's wage from her job at a convenience store. It doesn't help that Richie is disabled and Melissa's boss is an arsehole looking for any excuse to fire her. And then there's her ex Justin (Norman Reedus), who is becoming a pain in their arse again now the protection order is up. When Melissa becomes pregnant, everything is looking up for the couple, but soon enough, an issue with the pregnancy and a change in Melissa's work schedule begin series of events that will brings their money issues and eventually their relationship to its knees. An OK although very depressing look at the problems of the poverty stricken in America, helped along by two very good performances from Watts and Dillon. Also some surprisingly good nudity from Naomi Watts, which was an unexpected bonus.

Update for 27 March...

A quickie today.

Cheap Thrills is a drama about down and out Craig (Pat Healy) who is about to have the worst day of his life. He's $4,500 in the hole in rent and being given a final warning, then he's sacked from his job. He starts to drink his troubles away when he meets old friend Vince (Ethan Embry) drinking. Craig decides to stick around for one more drink when he and Vince meet Colin (David Koechner) and Violet (Sara Paxton) also drinking at the bar. They ask Craig and Vince to join them at a strip club and Craig reluctantly agrees. Craig and Violet are a wealthy couple who begin setting Craig and Vince little playful dares for some cash. They head to Craig and Violet's place for more drinking and more ambitious dares for more money, when Vince spies a safe full of cash and tempts Craig to help him rob them. That is unsuccessful, but Colin and Violet give them a chance to win some of the money with even bigger dares, that escalate alarmingly as the cash prizes grow and Craig's debt is wiped. This is going to be a helluva night. An interesting 'what-if?' movie that gets quite extreme towards the end, far more than expected. And it's not a bad little movie either with quite a few laughs and 'what-the-hell?' moments. And where the hell did Pat Healy come from? He's really good here in what must be his biggest role to date. Well worth a look.

Update for 23 March...

Continuing on the theme of one night stands gone wrong...

Stockholm is a Spanish movie that begins at a party where Él (Javier Pereira) makes a play for Ella (Aura Garrido) but she rejects him. Él is convinced that she is interested and goes about trying to convince her to spend the night with him and over time, Él becomes more convinced by Ella, eventually to the point where Ella spends the night. The next morning, the moods change. Now Ella wants to be with Él and he is trying to get rid of her. Not much to the movie which begins in a similar way to the Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight movies, but then takes a much darker, more desperate turn. Stockholm puts a lot of trust in the actors to pull off a convincing change in tone and both do a pretty good job particularly Aura Garrido whose change in mood is quite impressive. Again, like Stuck, it's basically 90 minutes of two people talking to one another, so if you're up for that sort of movie, Stockholm's well worth a look.

Aura Garrido in Stockholm

Update for 22 March...

Here's something new, that happens sometimes around here.

Stuck (apparently retitled #Stuck, didn't I complain about hashtags in titles recently...) is about Holly (Madeline ZIma) who is trying to leave the morning after her disastrous one night stand with Guy (Joel David Moore). Except she is stuck because she came home with Guy and left her car at the bar where they met. Guy offers to give her a lift back to the bar, but they get stuck in the worst L.A. traffic jam in history where traffic has become a car park. And now they have each other for company and neither want to be there. Over the stoppage they bicker and attempt to remember their previous night and how it all went wrong. And just maybe they will find each other. Mostly set in a car stuck on a freeway, Stuck is an OK movie about two people who got off on the wrong foot and manage to find out that maybe they are suited to one another. But, even at only 80 minutes, Stuck is stretching with a helluva lot of talk. I did like the Peep Show-like first person view of their one night stand, but get the feeling it would be disconcerting to some people.

Madeline Zima in Stuck

Australian Classics for 21 March...

While there's time, here's another quick Australian classic.

Deathcheaters is a 1976 'Boy's Own' action adventure where two Vietnam war buddies, Steve (John Hargreaves) and Rod (stuntman Grant Page) now run a successful movie stunts business with them as the stars. One day, shady ASIO head Culpepper (Noel Ferrier) spies them performing some spectacular stunts and decides to test their abilities for a super-secret spy mission. With some reservations from his wife Julia (Margaret Gerard, the director's wife), Steve and ladies man Rod take the job. They are to infiltrate a power station which holds the details of a plan by some Filipino crime lord and they are to bring it back to Culpepper. Second feature movie directed by Brian Trenchard-Smith (The Man From Hong Kong was his first) is a shameless ode to stuntman Grant Page but has the added bonus of a surprisingly well-cast John Hargreaves in a rare action role. Deathcheaters is a movie that is just an excuse for spectacular stunts and with that brief, it more than excels. The movie has some spectacular sights thanks to first-time cinematographer John Seale and features plenty of cameos from BTS regulars. The plot is very thin, but who cares. Apart from some heavy exposition scenes in the middle, Deathcheaters is a whole lotta fun, but if you're looking for more, this isn't the movie for you.

Australian Classics for 19 March...

Let's head back to 1991.

Flirting, the follow-up to The Year My Voice Broke continues to follow Danny (Noah Taylor) as he now goes to a boarding school with his former friends either dead or gone away. Bullied by his classmates, given the cane by his superiors, Danny just gets by, but one day at a school rugby game where he is typically ignoring it, he meets 3 girls from the girl's school across the lake including Thandiwe (Thandie Newton), who is from Uganda and is boarding for the year. Both are intrigued by one another and attempt to go to the dance together, only for that to be thwarted by the headmaster. But Thandiwe is persistent and Danny is carefree and they find a way to meet. So, they become the talk of their classes thanks to 'steamy' letters and various incidents including Danny stupidly fighting the school boxing champ for her honour. All this comes to a head when Thandiwe is to leave the school, but not before one last fling without the knowledge of their superiors. Fairly decent follow-up of one of my favourite Australian films ever, Danny still has his head in the clouds and Noah Taylor plays him to perfection again. Thandie Newton, in her first film role is also a good match and Nicole Kidman is also good in what is pretty much a supporting role and may also be one of her first roles without the curly hair and possibly her first as a blonde. This was the first time I'd actually seen this movie as it's never been released on DVD here (this is capped from the British DVD) and it's sadly being forgotten here as it's a great companion piece to The Year My Voice Broke and has a few well known actors in it including those mentioned and also Naomi Watts (who looks really young here). Definitely should be given more love here...

As I said above, this was the first time I'd ever seen this movie as it's not available in Australia on DVD. Funnily enough, I can remember the TV/VHS ads for Flirting as if they aired yesterday including the song that is playing during it. The trailer must have been on every VHS at the time. Strange the things you remember...

Australian VHS Classics Redux for 17 March...

Being a while since I've gone to the VHS vault and I've been looking for this obscure title since I capped it off its one and only TV screening here around 2001.

Traps is a period drama set in 1950s Indochina where Michael (Robert Reynolds), an English journalist who has come to inspect a rubber plantation so that he can report back its success. Joined by his wife Louise (Saskia Reeves), a photographer, they are tasked to stay at the house of the manager of the plantation Daniel (Sami Frey), a Frenchman who has lived in Indochina for a long while along with his daughter Viola (Jacqueline McKenzie). But, all is not well wherever you look. Michael and Louise's marriage is fraying at the edges and they are barely holding it together. Viola desperately wants out of her home, first attempting to conjure a romance with their houseboy, Tuan (Kiet Lam), then becoming obsessed with wanting to follow Louise back to London. While Tuan is torn between being loyal to Daniel who gives him a good life and side with his people who are beginning an insurgency against their French keepers. Directed by actress Pauline Chan (Vietnam, Bangkok Hilton) who also recently directed 33 Postcards, Traps is an interesting movie which mixes the political tension with the sexual and marriage tension that Michael and Louise are facing. It is a fairly good movie for the most part, but the ending isn't great, seemingly going too far in a certain direction without notice, causing what I feel to be an unsatisfactory ending. Apart from that, Traps is not a bad little movie.

As always with movies capped from VHS sources, the quality is not as good, but this series has come out better than most with the occasional audio glitch and the bottom of picture is a little askew, but the picture quality is good. Get the feeling this movie will never see DVD/Bluray, so this is possibly the best we'll get. It's just good to see again, particularly that Saskia Reeves massage scene.

Update for 16 March...

The Rocket is an Australian co-production filmed in Laos about Ahlo (Sitthiphon Disamoe), a boy who was to be killed at birth because he was believed to be cursed, a fact borne out by the death of the other twin at birth. His mother pleads to keep him and he is saved, but Ahlo is destined to be nothing but bad luck for his family. When his family are forced to move, his insistence on keeping his boat causes the death of his mother. At the new village, Ahlo befriends a young girl Kia, who's only family is her drunken uncle Purple, who is obsessed with James Brown and this obsession inevitably leads to an incident caused by Ahlo that forces his family with Kia and Purple to move on. At the next stop, they are told to move on by the elders, but are allowed to stay for the Rocket Festival and that's when Ahlo concocts an idea that he will build a rocket that will win the Rocket competition and save his family from moving to the city. Can Ahlo reverse his bad luck and win the contest? The Rocket is a relatively simple movie that takes a while to warm up, but ends rather impressively. It's a well made feel-good movie that is very hard to dislike and the little boy and girl are fantastic.

Redux for 14 March...

Collages and videos from Wild Child are now available here.

Earlier in the week, I said that I didn't have much I could do and this update proves it. Luckily Patrick came out this week, otherwise it would be nothing. This really is the bottom of the barrel. I'm hoping to have a few things ready over next week.

Update for 11 March...

The Bluray of the Patrick remake hits the streets, so here come the videos.

I reviewed this movie when I saw it in cinemas back in October last year and if you want, you can read what I thought there. I pretty much still think the same of it. If I was to say something more, it would be that there's an astonishing amount of homage in the movie to both the original movie and to other horror movies. Had a quick look at the special features, which includes a piece on the making of the sex scenes, but there isn't anything extra to show that isn't already below.

Collages and videos from the 1978 original can be found here.

Bottom of the barrel Monday...

OK, the title is disingenuous, but I really am struggling for movies I have watched or can be bothered watching, so it's stuff that's been sitting around on the hard drive for ages, waiting for me to get around to it. Funnily enough I have a fair bit of stuff waiting for me to get around to finishing off, some up to 7/8 years old, possibly older. Today's stuff is from the last year off the TV.

Three short movies today, 2 comedies (Fully Famous from the Tropfest program on SBS2, so quality is iffy and Dave's Dead) and one about dancers or something (Dance Me To The End Of Love). Nothing much, but better than nothing. I promised about this time last year that I would release stuff from short movies as there's some good stuff to cap that flies under the radar. Hadn't done anything about it 'til now. And sadly, many short movies disappear without trace and there's a few I would pay money to get my hands on that don't end up being seen outside the festival circuit or someone's backyard.

There's a few sitting around that I should get to. So, that means that they'll be ready in 5 years. See you then!

Update for 4 March...

A couple of indie movies today featuring actresses from Australia or New Zealand. Don't want to go too deeply into either as both are pretty forgettable, Brightest Star particularly tested my patience with a premise so poisonous I just kept getting angrier the longer I watched. A story that could only exist in the indie world. Lust For Love isn't a whole lot better, but at least there's a few laughs along the way.

Australian Classics for 2 March...

Let's go back to 1975 where... I dunno, I wasn't born then...

Scobie Malone is a thriller where playboy cop Scobie Malone (Jack Thompson) is called in to investigate the murder of actress Helga Brand (Judy Morris) at the Sydney Opera House and who Scobie has a brief fling with. As we follow Scobie and his partner Clemens (Shane Porteous) as they investigate, we also see Helga's side of the story, we find out that Helga is really a blackmailer who seduces men of importance, including in this case Walter Helidon (James Condon), a high up politician. Helga asks for $20,000 or their dalliances are made public. But, Helga wants out of the blackmailing business and looks for one big score and when her lover Jack Savanna (Joe Martin) happens across crime kingpin Mr. Sin's (Noel Ferrier) heroin importing operation, they may have their way out. But, Mr. Sin is having none of that. Surprisingly good little, long forgotten potboiler that's carried by Jack Thompson's usual charm and an against type turn from Judy Morris, who's all types of nasty. Also backed up by a fairly decent supporting cast including a pre-A Country Practice Shane Porteous trying to be hip and some quality tail making Scobie Malone a pretty fun ol' watch. And if you ever see it, look out for Bryan Brown playing a cop in what looks like his first ever movie, bafflingly listed as Brian Bronn in the credits.

And just for a little extra colour, there's a scene that has subliminal pornographic inserts, which a interesting little touch to a hidden photography scene.

The Removalists is a drama following two cops, Sergeant Dan Simmonds (Peter Cummins), a 30 year veteran and Constable Neville Ross (John Hargreaves), on his first day. Things are slow until Marilyn (Jacki Weaver), with the help of her sister Kate (Kate Fitzpatrick), files a complaint of domestic abuse against her husband Kenny (Martin Harris). After filing the complaint, the sisters come back a hour later to claim that Kenny has struck Marilyn again. The two cops call in a removalist (Chris Haywood), to help get Marilyn's stuff and head over to the house to supervise. But Kenny is completely standoffish, refuting all claims and goading the cops when not accusing his wife of everything under the sun. Then, Sergeant Dan starts laying into Kenny to help him shut up, which only exacerbates things as Kenny starts claiming police brutality. Things get more tense and more violent before the unthinkable happens. Based on a David Williamson play (wasn't everything in the 70s), The Removalists finds it hard to move away from its stage origins and at times feels very crowded. Even at only 85 minutes, the movie feels long and has scenes that don't feel necessary. And while the movie is fairly watchable, it does become a brutal violent mess where you'd think the cop characters would probably be kicked out of the force for what happens. I get the feeling this is one of Williamson's lesser plays.
