Update for 27 May...

A couple of movies with blood in the title today. Summer of Blood is a comedy about a man (writer/director Onur Tukel) who gets unceremoniously dumped by his long term girlfriend (Anna Margaret Hollyman from White Reindeer) and finds himself struggling with everything until he is bitten and turned into a vampire. All of a sudden, he's back in business and may just even get back with his ex. Partly funny, partly highly obnoxious, which is a bizarre combination, Summer of Blood sort of works through sheer force of will, but that main character is a serious tough sell, he is just highly annoying. Strange Blood is pretty much a rip off of The Fly, with a mad scientist and his extremely loyal assistant (Alexandra Bard) involved in an experiment that attempts to cure all diseases, but the organism it is tested on bites the mad scientist and he begins to crave human blood, which starts with taking blood from his assistant, but grows to feeding and murdering anyone who gets in the way. Not the greatest movie, shows it's limitations and is basically a two hander with both actors struggling at various times, but does have an interesting idea, even if very similar to The Fly.

Both movies are capped from not the greatest sources even though they are in HD. Hell, Summer of Blood is from a Bluray rip, but still has issues. Both are perfectly fine, just not high quality.

Update for 25 May...

Careful What You Wish For is an erotic thriller, well technically, where Doug (Nick Jonas), who has no luck with the ladies is hoping to get some action over the summer holidays. One day, he gets new neighbours in investment banker Elliot (Dermot Mulroney) and his much younger wife Lena (Isabel Lucas). He and his parents get to know their new neighbours and Elliot decides to give Doug a go fixing up his yacht, but he is instantly attracted to Lena and after helping her after she is locked out of her house, they begin an affair helped by Elliot being out of town for the most part. But when he is home, Elliot hits her and she despises him, longing to get away from him, but in the meantime takes comfort with Doug. One day, Lena calls Doug over to the house and shows him that Elliot has 'accidentally' died during a confrontation. Believing this, Doug helps her get rid of the body and now believes Lena will be with him. But, when a nosy but amateurish insurance agent (Kandyse McClure) attempts to get to the bottom of the whole affair, Doug comes under suspicion for the murder and Lena does little to dissuade this, but Doug has one trump card up his sleeve or so he thinks. Stock standard kill the rich husband, get the insurance pay out thriller with Isabel Lucas very alluring and enticing here, particularly in that wet dress and although I would have like to have seen more nudity from Isabel, she does seem to like showing off her bottom (see also previous update), never a bad thing. And while Nick Jonas is a pretty boy, he's convincing enough as a nerdish boy in over his head thanks to a temptress. Nothing special, watchable, but does have a twist in the end that is a serious stretch even as far as these films go. I did like the line in the end about whether or not Doug'd do it all again...

Turkey Shoot is a remake of the 1982 film of the same name (but also known as Escape 2000 and Blood Camp Thatcher) where Rick Tyler (Dominic Purcell) assassinates a dictator (Roger Ward) or so he thinks because 3 years later, Thatcher is still alive and Rick's in jail for massacring children during the war, something he doesn't remember doing. Reality TV show producer Meredith Baxter (Belinda McClory) gives him an offer to get out of prison by entering her show, Turkey Shoot, where trained assassins hunt down high risk criminals for the enjoyment of the audience. There's just one catch; no one has ever survived the show, particularly with star hunter Ramrod (Robert Taylor), a sniper who fought with Tyler, on a roll. Tyler reluctantly accepts and does the impossible by surviving the first level. This makes the dying head of the ongoing war General Thatcher (Nicholas Hammond) call in helicopter pilot Jill Wilson (Viva Bianca) to make sure Tyler dies as he has classified information about various missions he's made, oh and tells her that they framed Tyler for the massacre. During the next level of Turkey Shoot, Jill decides to help Tyler escape the game and Tyler decides to go after Thatcher, which turns out to be exactly what Thatcher wanted. Thatcher tells Tyler that they manufactured the war and he's the only one who can stop it, but with the entire nation now hunter Tyler, he's going to have a helluva time trying to do so. Rubbish remake of a rubbish original, moving away from the original movie about a fascist camp to make what is perceived to be a reality TV satire because we really needed another one of them. Following a similar line to that other mass murder reality TV show movie Death Race (also rubbish), I usually don't mind 'most dangerous game' stories, but there's zero doubt about Tyler surviving this and the movie isn't really about the reality TV show anyway with a plot about Tyler trying to clear his name taking precedence, which is boring... The original Turkey Shoot is a strange mess of a movie with half baked ideas and obvious issues, but got points for some excellent gore effects (and Lynda Stoner's bum), which was the only thing going for it. But this Turkey Shoot is lazy movie with a done to death plot, obviously looking to break into the American market (even with obvious Melbourne setting) and barely worth remembering. No wonder I was the only one in the cinema when I saw Turkey Shoot in its limited run back in December.

Update for 24 May...

The Loft is a thriller where a dead female body is found on the bed in a loft owned by five male friends, discovered by Luke (Wentworth Miller). As the men argue with each other over who killed the woman and who she is, we see that Vincent (Karl Urban), an architect who designed the building where the loft is, convinces his friends Luke, Chris (James Marsden), Marty (Eric Stonestreet) and his half brother Philip (Matthias Schoenaerts) to take a share in a loft so that they can use it to pick up women and bed them away from their wives. Some are reluctant, particularly Chris, but then Chris meets Anne (Rachael Taylor) at a party and becomes interested in her, eventually beginning an affair with her except she outs herself as a prostitute when things become to close and leaves but Chris still wants her. One night on a trip to San Diego, Vincent, Luke and Marty meet two women, one being Sarah (Isabel Lucas) who has sex with Vincent and then begins an affair with him. It then turns out that Sarah is the dead body on the bed and that she was about to expose her affair with Vincent to his wife. So, did Vincent kill Sarah? Was it suicide? Or did someone else kill Sarah? Preposterous thriller now on it's third incarnation from the same director as the original Belgian version (Schoenaerts also reprises his character from that version), this version working a lot on suspending all rational thoughts of human behaviour and numerous phony scenes to have as many twists as possible. It's all very silly and slick and all the male characters are rich arseholes, currently my most hated type of movie character, so I was never going to like this movie, but having said that, The Loft is a poor movie improved only by some naked Aussie ladies. Ummm...

Update for 22 May...

I Survived A Zombie Holocaust is a zombie comedy where director S.M.P (Andrew Laing) is on day 3 of his low budget zombie movie and it quickly turning into a disaster. His stars, Adam 'The Body' Harrison (Mike Edward) and Jessica Valentine (Reanin Johannink from All Cheerleaders Die) are acting like divas and his supporting actor is seriously sick. S.M.P's assistant Richard (Simon Ward) has hired a new runner Wesley (Harley Neville), fresh out of film school with script in hand and he is told to take the sick actor to the doctor in town, but the town is practically a ghost town and a hotel clerk says it's because a virus has gone through the town, possibly gotten from the town's water. Wesley's day goes from bad to worse as he gets treated like crap by everyone and when asked to be a stand-in with Susan (Jocelyn Christian), the set's terrible caterer/wannabe actress and someone he has a crush on, he pops a boner to her disgust and word gets around he's a sex creep. And then his day gets even worse when he discovers that the set has been infiltrated by actual zombies and they have just eaten Jessica, who he was supposed to look after. It's going to be a long first day for Wesley, but if he plays his cards right, he might just survive the day and get the girl. Not bad little comedy that probably tries to hard to get laughs even when it has some genuinely funny moments. It's a bit silly, leans too heavily on getting laughs from obvious clichés and is surprisingly sleazy with quite a bit of focus on Reanin Johannink's Wonderbra enhanced breasts (not complaining though...) and a lengthy scene involving her going to the toilet (?!), but still has plenty of charm from it's two leads. While it's no Shaun of the Dead, it's certainly a good fun time.

Update for 20 May...

Focus is a con-artist thriller where conman Nicky (Will Smith) meets Jess (Margot Robbie) when she unsuccessfully tries to scam him, but he sees something in her and decides to recruit her for series of scams he and his crew are running in New Orleans. After a highly successful series of scams, Nicky and Jess fall for each other. Nicky takes Jess to the Superbowl where he gets into a series of bad bets with rich gambler Liyuan (BD Wong) that ends in another scam. But after winning a whole heap of money, Nicky dumps Jess. Three years later, Nicky is involved in setting up a scam with motor racing team owner Garriga (Rodrigo Santoro) and his right hand man Owens (Gerald McRaney) to sell a rival team owner McEwen (Robert Taylor) fake schematics for a car. But, when the plan is put in motion, Jess enter the scene and she is now Garriga's lover. This throws Nicky as he still has a thing for her. As the plan is set in motion, he becomes distracted by Jess which may get both into a whole lot of trouble. OK con game movie, nothing exceptional and some obvious twists, but a fun ride with some interesting scenes (particularly the Superbowl scene) and Smith and Robbie work well together.

Update for 19 May...

Nanny Cam is a thriller where Linda and Mark (Laura Allen and Cam Gigandet) who are looking for a nanny for their daughter Chloe after their current one accidentally allows her to get burnt, plus she's showing (obvious, except to the parents) signs of dementia. A long search for a new nanny drags on, but one day, Heather (India Eisley) comes along and Mark hires her behind Linda's back, which she begrudgingly accepts. Linda is not trusting of the new nanny, so she sets up a nanny cam, which she follows obsessively, but Heather and Chloe get on together like a house on fire, much to the chagrin of Linda. But, Heather is unstable, chasing off the previous nanny and possibly killing her and then she finds out about the nanny cam and begins to make a not too subtle attempt to seduce Mark while making Linda look like a bad mother. Linda then attempts to find out more about Heather and finds out that she's a troubled girl, but when she fires Heather, she responds by kidnapping Chloe and it's a race against time to find them. Typical Lifetime scare story, totally implausible and completely low rent and laughable. The Linda character is a complete disaster, how she holds a job is truly a miracle because she seems to be watch the nanny cam all day, well except when Heather performs a striptease for Mark to watch!! Nothing to get excited about plot wise, but India Eisley looks great and all...

Update for 14 May...

Some quick updates today. Didn't realise that Gemma Bovery was a French movie considering it was starring Gemma Arterton, but 80% of the movie is in French. It's not bad, basically a light comedy take on the Madame Bovery with a man obsessed with the story is convinced that the new neighbour Gemma Bovery (Gemma Arterton) is living her life exactly like the book. The Pyramid is a thriller where a father and daughter archaeologists and other including some doing a TV special get lost in a pyramid and it turns out that some dark force is hunting them. Not bad either, but unnecessarily shot as a found footage movie, there's just no need for it. And I watched The Riot Club a few months back and it was another one of those privileged people with issues while they act like arseholes movies that I watched a lot of in a row and am now sick of and this was the final straw. Hated this movie, just repulsed by it.

Back to normal...

Assassin is a thriller about a hitman Jamie (Danny Dyer) who is given $20,000 to kill a business impediment to gangster brothers Lee and John Alberts (Martin and Gary Kemp, sadly not playing the Kray Brothers again). While scoping his victim out, he spies stripper Chloe (Holly Weston) and falls for her. After performing the hit, he finds out that Chloe is the step-daughter of the hit and is very interested to find out who did it. This rankles the gangster brothers who decide to pay Jamie to kill Chloe, but Jamie has a crisis of conscience and decides to protect her and fakes Chloe's death before leaving town with her. But, the brothers are not convinced and use Chloe's best friend Alex (Anouska Mond) to contact her so that they can finish the job. Stock standard stuff with Danny Dyer playing the preferable quiet, brooding side of his two acting personas and isn't half bad, but everything else has that seen it all before feel about it and is very much a B-grade movie.

Spanish Update for 6 May...

Sometimes they make movies in Spain in English. Today, I start with some Brian Yuzna movies from his Spanish period. Got three movies today, the best of the lot being Dagon from 2001 based on a H.P Lovecraft story and about a man who arrives at a port after his yacht sinks and desperately tries to find his girlfriend (Raquel Meroño) but finds out that the town is a bunch of half-human, half-sea creatures that would do anything for their underwater God, Dagon. A little shaky, but a not bad movie. Beneath Still Waters is about a town that was engulfed by a dam, trapping a bunch of cannibals who kill a young boy. 40 years later, a teenage friend of Clara (Charlotte Salt) goes missing in the dam and cannot be found. Then other people begin to turn into zombie like creatures when they go near or in the water and only Clara can stop the town either being killed or tuning into their hedonist side. Passable, but is fairly silly at times. Rottweiler is about a man who escapes from a work camp and is chased by a sadistic robotic rottweiler who more like a Terminator. Plus the bloke thinks about his girlfriend and it's all very silly and nasty and actually quite laughable at time. Also it was set in 2018 which made it seem like 2118 not three years away.

There's some more Spanish movies in English from Brian Yuzna during that period like Beyond Re-Animator and Rosamanta: The Werewolf Hunter (both with Elsa Pataky) also The Nun which has nothing to cap in it and is an OK movie about a nun reeking revenge from beyond the grave. And the only other one is Faust: Love of the Damned which I first capped back in 2004 and might do a redux series of when I can get a copy. There's other Spanish movies in English I might get around to, mostly cheap looking thrillers directed by Bryan Goeres.

Spanish Update for 4 May...

The last of the Pedro Almodóvar updates, well for the moment anyway..

Matador is a 1986 drama where aspiring bullfighter Ángel (Antonio Banderas) takes the advice of his mentor Diego Montez (Nacho Martínez) and finds a woman in the same way that he fights a bull. HIs first 'victim' is neighbour and Diego's lover Eva (Eva Cobo), but the attempted rape goes badly ending more in embarrassment for both. The next day, Ángel confesses to a detective (Eusebio Poncela) of the rape, but when Eva is contacted to complete the complaint, she declines preferring to move on. But Ángel hasn't finished there and confesses to a bunch of related rape/murders although the detective is not convinced of his guilt. A renowned lawyer María Cardenal (Assumpta Serna) takes his case, but Ángel gets the distinct feeling he has seen her before. During investigations, María meets Diego and sparks fly immediately and both become increasingly obsessed with each other the deeper the case gets. Meanwhile, the detective continues his doubt of the timid Ángel being capable of these crimes and enlists sympathetic psychiatrist Julia (Carmen Maura) to help prove otherwise and focus his investigations on Diego as the possible killer. But why has Ángel have intimate knowledge of these crimes and what is his connection to María and/or Diego? Totally forgot about this early Almodóvar movie until I was looking for other movies of his and realised I'd never actually seen Matador and boy this one is real shock to the senses. It opens with Diego masturbating to a cheap looking Jess Franco type movie then María killing a bloke during sex and finishing herself off as she lays there dead. Then there's the attempted rape. Matador really goes all out early and this is a rare mix of sex and violence for an Almodóvar movie. While there's still touches of humour throughout the movie (my favourite being the showdown ending thwarted by an eclipse!), this is the darkest film he ever made and I gotta say that this definitely surprised me, but in a good way. Definitely one strange beast of a movie.

Can't be bothered going in detail of the other movie in this update, Volver, a pretty decent soap opera melodrama about a family coming to terms with the death of two people and the 'reappearance' of another. Also brings together two of his favourite actresses, Penélope Cruz and Carmen Maura. I've already captured two of his later movies Los Abrazos Rotos (Broken Embraces) and La Piel Que Habito (The Skin I Live In) previously. Other movies I haven't capped include The Flower of My Secret and I'm So Excited as neither have nothing to cap and although I haven't rewatched them recently, I'm pretty sure All About My Mother and Bad Education don't have anything to cap, but I'll check another time. Also haven't found decent copies of his early movies Pepi, Luci, Bom and the Other Girls (which I've seen but can't remember much about) and Labyrinth of Passion (which I've only seen the last half of). And I'm hoping to get a decent copy of Bad Habits soon, but not in the immediate future.

Time to move on, well I have a few Spanish movies to get to, but all that I'm thinking of capping are English language Spanish movies I've recently watched. Baffling? Find what I'm talking about in the coming days.
