Update for 31 July...

All about honour today, well the American spelling anyway. Some quick synopses:

The Honor Farm is a drama about a couple of female friends who go to the prom and have a real shitty time with their drunken dates, so on their way home, they meet up with a group of people from their class who are going to The Honor Farm, a haunted abandoned asylum. They all take some mushroom and start hallucinating, mostly about goats and then one of the girls has sex. At barely 70 minutes that's pretty much it and it's utterly terrible. It's looking for something profound instead of the usual horror thriller tropes, which is admirable, but feels like something is missing, I don't what.

The Honor List is a drama about a group of friends coming to terms with the death of one their friends (named Honor). There's been a fracturing in the friendship in recent times, mainly because of Piper (Meghan Rienks), who's a trainwreck waiting to happen. The remaining girl find a list of things that Honor wanted to do before graduation/dying, so they decide that they will do them in her memory. Along the way they reconnect and prove things to themselves that they didn't think possible. Not bad, pretty much a teen movie even with a little bit of nudity also directed by an Australian, yeah, of course I noticed that.

Update for 30 July...

The 90s weekend bleeds into Monday, not by design, but I was almost finished yesterday before getting distracted, so I might as well finish it. A bunch of 90s TV movies that have aired recently, all upscaled to HD, but it's not like there's going to be HD version of these movies. I have three different recordings of Fall Into Darkness, so this is from the one the most recent airing which was in HD and doesn't have annoying network graffiti all over it. Fall Into Darkness is not bad, a solid teen thriller about Charlotte Ross' character trying to get revenge on Tatyana Ali's character who she blames for the death of her brother, only to fail miserably with a conspiracy possibly afoot. Of course Tatyana's character wasn't involved, but who was and why are the bodies piling up. Ludicrous as TV movies are, but still not bad although it has a baffling scene at the end that involves the scene featuring April Telek below, who only appears in that scene, I have no idea why or even the relevance of the scene. Ah well, something extra to cap. A Clean Kill is about Roxana Zal trying to convince the cops she didn't run her lover's wife off the road, except it's a lot more complicated than that. Sexy, in a soft TV way, some brief nudity from Roxana and a neat twist in the end makes it fairly watchable.

I'm pretty sure these are all uncut, but there is a habit to cut some of the TV movies that air, but I can't seem to find anything different from other capped versions I've seen.

Update for 24 July...

A couple of new indie movies in today's update. Some quick synopses:

Kate Can't Swim is a drama about best friends Kate (Celeste Arias) and Em (Jennifer Allcott), who meet up again after Em returns home from an extended overseas holiday with purple hair and a new Australian boyfriend Nick (Josh Helman, also writer/director with Allcott), which is strange because Em preferred women before she left. Em and Nick invite Kate and her boyfriend Pete (Grayson DeJesus) to Nick's cabin by a lake for a weekend and things go fine until Pete gets confirmation of a new job in Seattle, which means they'll have to move away and then Kate and Em share a moment which they explore a little deeper, but ends up changing everything. Not bad for what is basically a talkfest.

Landing Up is a drama about Chrissie/Callie or whoever she is (Stacey Maltin), who lives as a 'tourist' in New York, as in they technically live on the streets, but search endlessly to have a roof over their head for the night/week/whatever. After getting kicked out of her latest home, Chrissie is back on the edge of homelessness until she bumps into David (Ben Rappaport) at a bar and they hit it off. So much so that Chrissie, who David knows as Callie, starts staying at his apartment nearly every night to the disgust of his roommate. But when David has to go away on a business trip, Chrissie is caught short and needs a place to stay with things become desperate. Also, David's roommate finds out something about Chrissie which may put an end to relationship and that's while she withholds that she's actually homeless from him. Pretty good movie and the scenes of desperation through the movie are the most riveting, but I will say that the ending is a bit of a cop out, almost like it wanted a happy ending without the consequences of what that happy ending bring. Still a fairly good movie though.

14 Cameras is a thriller continuing on from 13 Cameras where the Slumlord (Neville Archambault) has moved on to setting up cameras in bigger and better houses and now for an online audience. This time he's set up a holiday house where a family decides to stay for a week. And they become popular with his audience, particularly the teenage girls (Amber Midthunder and Brynne Ratledge) and may be a little too popular with the freaks. Also, the Slumlord has captured locked up two woman, one who he captured in the previous movie (Brianne Moncrief) and a new woman, who wants out fast. It's only a matter of time before things start to come undone. Not a bad movie, probably slightly better than the first movie, but still fairly unbelievable, particularly the ending.

Update for 21 July...

Here's the 90s weekend again with another 3 entries. Saw New Jack City for the first time recently and it's an OK movie about a black gangster (Wesley Snipes) who wants it all and the cops that try to take him down. Interesting cast including Chris Rock as a junkie, which is well, different and unsurprisingly was a bit of a hit back in the day as gangster movies usually go well. Hell, there's even a scene celebrating Scarface, which all these movies are definitely imitating; New Jack City is just more open about it. I remember liking Gang Related back in the day, it was an odd movie that worked quite well, particularly unlikely cop buddies Jim Belushi and Tupac and Lela Rochon as the girl who is helping them get away with murder. Holds up really well and it's oddness works really well for it. I quite like Cynda Williams and Mo' Better Blues is her first movie and she had an interesting 90s with movies like the perennially underrated One False Move, Caught Up, Tales of The City and the Erotic Tales short Wet. Some good nude scenes too...

Just a quick series today from the new release Traffik, a thriller about a couple in a rough patch who getaway to rekindle the romance, but bump into some unseemly people at a service station and ends in a fight and then a chase down the highway, but they get away. But then it turns out that they have the phone of one of the unseemly people and it has evidence of what they are, sex traffickers. And then they come for what's theirs and it's not going to be pretty. Not bad, doesn't mind getting a bit nasty at times and throws in a curve ball or two which keeps it interesting for longer than it has any right to be.

Some brief stuff from a couple of new movies. Truth Or Dare is a typical Blumhouse horror movie, this time about a group of college students on Spring Break who are tricked into playing a neverending deadly game of Truth Or Dare where if you don't play or lie, you die. With the bodies piling up, how are the remaining going to stop this game? A bit silly and probably would have benefited from being played for laughs like another Blumhouse movie Happy Death Day successfully did. Loving Lucy Hale doing the sexy stuff, nowhere near as good as Dude, but pretty good for a PG-13 movie. How It Ends is a post-apocalyptic thriller set after after an event paralyses America, about a man who tries to get to his girlfriend who is over the other side of the country with the help of her father, who he doesn't get along with. Eh, OK, but if you've seen one post-apocalyptic thriller, you've seen most of them.

Update for 15 July...

The 90s weekend continues unabated with 4 more movies that I'd never seen before but have finally gotten around to watch. Hardware is a pretty decent lo-fi robot goes berserk thriller where 90% of the action takes place in one apartment. Quite bloody too and has an interesting way to show the sex scene even if it doesn't show as much as it seems. Worth a look. Bounty Hunters 2 is a B action movie, pretty much know what to expect, well except Tony Curtis turning up in what has to be one of his last roles. Also, there's a scene which you'll see below that's set in a lingerie store where the sales assistants try it out for you which is utterly baffling. Wouldn't there be a neverending stream of men at the place? At least is would be busy... State Of Grace is a decent thriller about an undercover cop comes back to his old buddies to take them down only to get caught up in the life. Quite a lot like The Departed, there are some stark similarities between the two and it another in that period with a crazy Gary Oldman role. Man, that's all he did in the early 90s. And Bad Girls is fairly fun girls against the world western.

Update for 14 July...

Another 90s weekend, today's update features the sequels in the Warlock series, both are pretty shoddy. The second one at least looks like it had a budget despite the incredibly dated effects while the third one is incredibly cheap looking and loses Julian Sands' Warlock for Bruce Payne, and well, that's not a bad substitute. The third one obviously circumvents it's budgetary constraints with more sex, basically all Angel Boris is there for, but sadly no nudity from Ashley Laurence despite a decent tease and the fact she had a nude scene in the previous year's A Murder Of Crows, which I capped in a recent 90s update.

Update for 12 July...

Fashionista is a drama about April (Amanda Fuller) who is obsessed with clothes, right down to working in a clothes store with her husband Eric (Ethan Embry). But things are strained in their relationship and April thinks that he is cheating on her with their new employee. She seeks solace with her best friend Theresa (Jemma Evans) including letting her stay at the house after she has problems with boyfriend. Well, it turns out that Eric is actually cheating on her with Theresa and everything spirals out of control in April's life. She leaves Eric and meets rich playboy Randall (Eric Balfour), who indulges her obsession with clothes by letting her play with his credit card, although things go badly when he gets more extreme with his sexual demands. The more her private life spins out of control, the more her obsession takes a hold of her, ending in devastating consequences. Reuniting Amanda Fuller and the director after they worked together on Red, White & Blue, Fashionista is strange and interesting look at how an obsession takes a hold of a person. April's obsession with clothes is incredibly weird, almost sexual and this isn't helped by her husband enabling this obsession. It goes into very strange areas including a sub-plot involving the underused Alex Essoe. It's a tough film to sell, but if you want to see a movie about obsession taking over someone's life, Fashionista is worth a look, although I will say that I prefer Red, White & Blue slightly more.

Update for 10 July...

The Kissing Booth is a teen comedy about Elle (Joey King) who does everything with her best friend Lee (Joel Courtney), but it all changes for her when the new school year begins. Elle has 'developed' over summer and after some wardrobe problems on the first day of school, accidentally becomes the centre of attention with the cool girls and especially Lee's older brother Noah (Jacob Elordi), who Elle has a big crush on although he's always considered her like a kid sister. For the school fair, Elle and Lee design a kissing booth, which is being manipulated by the cool girls to get a kiss from Noah, but circumstances throw Elle and Noah together for a kiss and it changes everything. They fall for one another, but they must keep it from Lee as the two have a set of rules which includes staying away from each other's family members. When Lee discovers them kissing, he is devastated and it causes their friendship to fray while Elle and Noah split. Can things work out for the three of them? Fairly decent teen comedy despite ending in a predictable way, right down to the cover version of 'Don't You (Forget About Me)', I'm surprised it didn't get more attention but that's the price you pay for dealing with Netflix. Joey King has a lot of screen presence, in a way reminiscent of Emma Stone in Easy A but she carries this film admirably and in her own way. The movie is mostly made in South Africa, which explains why it doesn't feel like a movie set in Los Angeles despite the prominence of the Hollywood Sign. And someone needs to break the curse that's on Molly Ringwald, who seems to be sentenced to appear in teen movies for eternity. At least she working I s'pose, there's others from that period who aren't...

A couple of new romantic dramas in today's update. Paper Year is about a young couple who get married and attempt to make a go of it, but it turns out a lot harder than they both thought. OK I guess and Eve Hewson is pretty good. Lost In Florence is about an American in Italy who gets dumped by his girlfriend (Emily Atack) as he is proposing to her and decides to stay in Florence with his sister (Stana Katic) as he works out what to do next. He gets involved in the brutal local sport Calcio Storico, where he falls for the girlfriend (Alessandra Mastronardi) of his friend, throwing the championship chances and friendship in chaos. Not a bad little movie if a little obvious.

Update for 5 July...

3 more new movies.

In Darkness is a thriller about a blind woman (Natalie Dormer, also writer/producer) who befriends a woman who lives above her when she dies in mysterious circumstances. Turns out that she is the daughter of a Serbian warlord who is wanted by the Russians for his crimes. For accidentally witnessing the crime, she unwittingly becomes involved in the full blown conspiracy, but maybe she was already neck-deep in it. Pretty decent thriller that may overdo the twists, but is no less engrossing because of it.

Submission is a drama about a professor who becomes close to one of his students (Addison Timlin) as he reviews her novel, so much so that they have a very brief fling that would later come back to haunt him. OK, I guess.

I capped All I Need for the Australian/NZ actresses overseas a while back for Caitlin Stasey, but have only just gotten around to capping the rest of the movie as pretty much all the female roles required the girls to be in underwear.

Another couple of new movies. Some quick synopses: Mobile Homes is a drama about a family of drifters who begin to settle when they discover the world of mobile homes. Nothing spectacular. Future World is a post-apocalyptic thriller set after technology has been eradicated where a young man goes on a mission to find a cure for his dying mother but along the way they come across a gang of motorcycle riding thieves who have found the last robot (Suki Waterhouse) who ends up helping the man while they escape the gang of thieves. Pretty pedestrian and only serves to remind you of far better post-apocalyptic thrillers.

Update for 3 July...

Three new releases for today's update. Some quick synopses:

Anon is a high-tech murder mystery set in the near future where a detective (Clive Owen) with the ability to view what people have done meets someone who is he can't read and is completely anonymous. He becomes fascinated by her and when it seems she may be involved with a series of strange murders where the victims watch the killer kill them, he attempts to find her, which he does by looking for someone to erase certain memories. He becomes romantically involved with Anon (Amanda Seyfried), but when the bodies continue to pile up, he gets in too deep and he may be the next victim or the next killer. Intriguing thriller from prominent sci-fi filmmaker Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, The Truman Show, S1m0ne), who always offers something worth watching even when they don't fully succeed (particularly thinking about In Time). Anon is pretty good but I think the central murder mystery is the least intriguing part of the movie. I was more intrigued by the detective's fascination and relationship with Anon.

Modern Life Is Rubbish is a romantic drama about Liam (Josh Whitehouse) and Natalie (Freya Mavor), who bond over there shared love of music and manage to stay together for 10 years, but then things hit a road bump and combined with Liam's dream of being a rock star becoming less likely to happen, they drift apart. So, can they get back together? Of course they can! A bit drippy and obvious and more frustrating to watch the longer it goes, but it's not all bad. I think having most of the movie take place at the ten year mark of the relationship is to it's detriment because we get very little of the good times.

Happy Birthday is a thriller where two friends Brady (Matt Bush) and Tommy (Riley Litman), who work on the fringes of the movie industry, go to Mexico to celebrate Brady's birthday. While there they meet two men who help them celebrate including ingesting some pretty full on drugs and also meet two women (Vanessa Lengies and Britne Oldford) who they think will show them a good time, but instead lock them up in a hotel room so that a Mexican crime lord named El Gato can get a ransom for them or kill them if he gets nothing. Well, Tommy accidentally dies and he was the one with the rich parents, so Brady is fucked. How does he get out this? Not bad, the twists are pretty obvious, but it's still pretty watchable.

Wow! A new release.

Tarnation is an Australian comedy horror homage to Evil Dead where Oscar (Daisy Masterman) is sacked from her band and her boyfriend unceremoniously dumps her. So her flatmate Rain (Danae Swinburne) convinces her to tag along to a cabin in the woods with her and boyfriend plus some bloke that Rain has set her up with. Well, it turns out that an unicorn that is demonically possessed is waiting for Oscar's blood to complete the cycle of bringing Satan back to Earth. Not before long, everyone but Oscar has being turned into demons and now she must fight to survive with only the help of a wheelchair bound sharp-shooter (Emma-Louise Wilson), who may or may not be possessed herself. Entirely silly movie that in no way takes itself seriously, but it doesn't mean it's a good movie. There are a few laughs throughout, but there is so much nonsense going on, it becomes tough to like. All the band stuff is fairly annoying but then it ends with a rap battle which is just excruciating to watch. Shame really because I don't mind the director's previous female driven movies MurderDrome and Fight Like A Girl (must get around to SheBorg Massacre one of these days).
