Update for 31 March...

One more new Australian movie to round out this busy month. Today's update is from the bushranger biopic The Legend Of Ben Hall, a rather lengthy movie (139 minutes), which is incredibly rare for an Australian movie to be that long. OK movie, a bit clunky at times, possibly due to being low budget, but alright if you are into the bushranger genre of Australian movies.

Update for 30 March...

Something rare for this year, a new Australian movie.

Joe Cinque's Consolation is a true life drama set in Canberra where Joe Cinque (Jerome Meyer) meets law student Anu Singh (Maggie Naouri) and it's love at first sight. Three years later in 1997 a whole lot has changed. Anu believes she has a 'terminal condition' and that her skin is falling off her, but she seems perfectly fine. She is considering liposuction although she is thin (possibly also because she has mistaken what liposuction actually does) and Joe is trying everything to help her including getting advice about a possible mental disorder (really!!!) without her knowledge. Anu decides that she wants to kill herself, but she also wants Joe to die with her although she has no plans on telling him of this. She enlists her friend Madhavi (Sacha Joseph) to help her with the plans for their deaths including having a big dinner to celebrate before killing Joe and herself. Word gets around that this is happening, but nobody believes that such a thing could happen. Anu goes ahead with it, drugging Joe so that he doesn't feel the hotshot of heroin she is to give him (also so that he doesn't put up a fight), but the Valium she gives him doesn't work as planned and she calls it off. Later in the week after a visit to Joe's parents, Anu gets the urge to do it again and with Madhavi quickly organises another dinner party with more guests including former student Tanya (Laura Gordon), who they tell about their plans. Tanya is incredibly uncomfortable with what she hears, but still doesn't raise alarm. The plans again seem to be failing even though Joe has been given an extreme amount of Rohypnol to cause him to sleep. But after Madhavi gives off a blasé response to her inquiries, Tanya threatens to call the police if they don't stop their plans. But nothing will stop Anu... I've seen thousands of ultraviolent horror movies, but I've found very few as disturbing as the goings on in this real life drama. The murder of Joe is shocking enough but the fact that nobody did anything about it and that a number of people were warmly complicit with the murder is just horrifying. It's hard to believe that such a crime happened as this did, but that's what makes it more shocking, that people could just wash their hands of any wrongdoing when they aren't directly involved. If I have a problem with the movie it is that is doesn't properly explain how Anu got to the state that she does and I think that would've helped more with the motivations behind why she couldn't just kill herself. Maybe we'll never know...

Update for 28 March...

The Assignment is a thriller where a mob hitman Frank Kitchen (Michelle Rodriguez) is set-up by Honest John (Anthony LaPaglia) and wakes up a while later with one major difference; Frank is now a woman. She finds out that a doctor, Rachel (Sigourney Weaver), has performed gender realignment surgery on Frank as revenge for killing her son a year ago and the doctor wants see if Frank can mend her ways as a woman. Fat chance of that happening as Frank is hellbent on getting revenge on the doctor and she is killing everyone in her path. She finds a helpful friend in former lover Johnnie (Caitlin Gerard), but she may be a little too helpful. Frank will stop at nothing to become the man she once was and/or kill the heavily protected doctor if that doesn't work out. Ludicrous but mostly fun action movie from action master Walter Hill, making the type of action movie we barely see in the mainstream any more, although there are a number of allusions to comic books because apparently you have to nowadays. Both Rodriguez and Weaver seem to be having a blast and that helps with the tone of the movie. Worth a look if you're into 80s action movies with plenty of nudity (whether it's real or not).

Update for 26 March...

The Dramatics: A Comedy is a comedy about struggling actress Katie (Kat Foster) and her writer/director boyfriend Paul (Scott Rodgers) who are both going nowhere. That is until Katie is cast in the lead in a mini-series based on a popular erotic novel that is to be made by Oscar winning actor Bryan J. Macy (Pablo Schreiber). All of a sudden Katie is going places fast and preparing for the role and Paul is stuck smoking weed, running an improv workshop with terrible wannabe actors and an increasing desire to buy a gun. Turns out Bryan is a controlling personality and expects much of Katie and maybe a bit more than just a professional relationship which Katie denies is happening constantly to an increasingly jealous Paul. Paul's desire for weed leads him to start hanging out with one of his loopy students Abigail (Riki Lindhome) who seems a bit obsessed with Paul (and Katie). When the shoot is brought forward, things come to a head the night before Katie is to leave. OK comedy with a few good laughs but gets bogged down with celebrity cameos and insider bullshit I don't really care about. Most of the laughs come from Katie and Paul's relationship and Bryan's precious behaviour so the movie doesn't need all that insider bullshit. Not a bad movie at all though.

Update for 25 March...

Still flicking through new releases, today something you've probably heard of...

Passengers is a sci-fi drama where a spaceship is transporting 5000 humans to a distant planet to set-up a new colony, something that has happened many times before. The trip takes 120 years, but 30 years in the spaceship is struck by an asteroid and as a result mechanic Jim Preston (Chris Pratt) is mistakenly awoken from hibernation when his sleep chamber fails and is left to travel on the ship by himself until death. He tries to find a way to keep himself busy and while trying to fix his sleep chamber and spending time with his only companion, a bartending robot Arthur (Michael Sheen), but the loneliness slowly gets to him and he considers killing himself. Then he sees Aurora (Jennifer Lawrence) in her sleep chamber and is instantly in love. He finds out as much about her as he can and eventually decides to sabotage her sleep chamber so that she can be with him. As she gets over the realisation that she will spend the rest of her life on the ship, Aurora falls for Jim, just as he planned and everything is great for a while until Arthur tells Aurora that Jim woke her up and she loses it at him and comes to despise him for ruining her life. Also, the spaceship is slowly falling apart from it's asteroid hit and this causes the ship captain (Laurence Fishburne) to be woken up but he is not woken properly and in his brief time he, Jim and Aurora must stop the spaceship from being destroyed killing all on board, even if it means they die in the process. Decent sci-fi movie before it turns into every other sci-fi movie when they have to save everyone from death. I found the movie far more interesting when it was just about the loneliness and coming to terms with life just been waiting out the days until death. But, this being a Hollywood movie, you need to have big action scenes and life and death situations. To be honest, the makers totally wimped out on this and just decided to remake The Martian complete with a very similar final act. Good, but could've been so much more...

Update for 24 March...

The Institute is a thriller set in 19th century where Isabel (Allie Gallerani) check herself into a renowned mental hospital to get help as she hasn't been coping well after the death of her parents. Under the guidance of Dr. Cairn (James Franco), she is given the best treatment and allowed to wander the grounds. But as always, all is not what it seems. Dr. Cairn's star patient Lucy (Zoe Sidel) is failing his treatment and he refers her to the sadistic surgeon Dr. Lemelle (Tim Blake Nelson) for a more radical treatment. Cairn is desperate for his treatment to work and sets his sights on Isabel and finally he finds success. When Isabel's brother Roderick (Joe Pease) visits, he is very concerned with Isabel's behaviour and decides to find out what's going on and what he sees is incredibly shocking and that's only the half of it. Interesting movie from Franco (who seems to make 10 movies a year) and Pamela Romanowsky that treads a fine line between trashy thriller and serious drama and does it quite well. Worth a look.

Update for 22 March...

A couple of VOD movies today.

Ava's Impossible Things is a drama where Ava (Chloe Farnworth), who has given up her dreams to look after her terminally sick mother (Susan Duerden) when she makes the request to end her life. Ava, who has been experiencing weird dreams recently, is shocked by the request. She is also in a relationship with Jessa (Lauryn Nicole Hamilton), who is pregnant with their child but they are currently going through a rough patch. Ava falls asleep and begins to dream about experiencing the biggest moment of her life and she also must repair her relationship with Jessa, but she is struggling to find a way to do so. Or something... Baffling movie that I'm not sure what the point of is apart from Ava getting to do everything she's given up while learning to live with her mother's decision, but two-thirds of the movie is this dream which goes round and round in circles until a 6+ minute lesbian sex scene pretty much ends it. Definitely for a specific audience and that definitely isn't me.

Moontrap: Target Earth is a sci-fi drama where a spaceship is found embedded in the Earth, but no-one can work out where it's from or how it works. A mysterious organisation that is working through a cypher in Richard (Charles Shaughnessy) and his assistant is desperate to find out how it works, but also bumping off anyone that knows of its existence. They bring in Scout (Sarah Butler) and her long time friend/lover Daniel (Damon Dayoub), experts in their field to have a go at finding out how the spaceship works and when Scout touches it, she receives a vision of something that happened to members on the ship. Richard is tasked to kill them by the organisation, but after Daniel is killed, Scout bargains with Richard. After been knocked out, Scout awakens on the ship where Richard was earlier sent and a robot forces her to recreate what the former head of the ship was doing, but with other robots closing in to kill everyone and Richard wanting everything for himself, Scout is going to have a hard time fulfilling her destiny. Very low budget movie and it shows not just in the special effects, but the flimsy, seen-it-all before plot which seems to be hastily put together. Nothing dozens of similar movies have done better.

Update for 20 March...

Well, I still do new/newish stuff, here's a couple of stalker in your own home movies.

Intruder in a stalker thriller where Elizabeth (Louise Linton), a cellist, is stuck in her apartment during a wild storm, waiting for her boyfriend to come home and she's looking after her friend's cat. But, she isn't alone and someone is watching her from inside her apartment. She meets John (John Robinson) and becomes friendly with him and then her boyfriend arrives and she plays catch-up with him, which drives the stalker mad and he kills him and then steps up his 'contact' with Elizabeth. Who is the stalker and what does he want with Elizabeth? Ordinary stalker thriller where the plot shows its hand early and then decides to string us along with no real motive for the stalking or anything that follows.

13 Cameras (also called Slumlord, which I prefer) is another cameras all over the house stalker thriller where a landlord Gerald (Neville Archambault) rents out a house where he's installed numerous (13?) cameras around the house for his own pleasure. He rents it to young couple Claire and Ryan (Brianne Moncrief and PJ McCabe), who are expecting a child soon and both are repulsed by Gerald, who smells bad and is just genuinely creepy. Claire and Ryan settle into the house with Gerald watching on and occasionally going back to the house while they are away to put cameras in better places (particularly in the shower...) and giving their dog fast food which goes right through it. Not too mention other disgusting things. Also, Ryan is cheating on Claire with Hannah (Sarah Baldwin), a co-worker and Gerald takes a liking to Hannah. She is a bit clingy, calling late at night and introducing herself to Claire, so Ryan decides to dump her, but Hannah makes helps herself to their house while Claire and Ryan are out and Gerald makes his move, locking Hannah up in an off-limits basement in the house. Claire and Ryan's relationship deteriorates quickly then Claire finds out about Hannah and kicks him out. Hannah is beginning to cause a problem for Gerald and what happens next will not end well for the lot of them. OK thriller that is helped by having one of the most disgusting and sleaziest looking actor ever playing Gerald the stalker, who's quite good. But it has a major issue regarding Hannah being locked up in a same house and neither Claire or Ryan ever know about this until a major late development. It just doesn't seem believable but it neatly sets up the ending, so I s'pose that all that matters.

Redux for 18 March...

4 more redone series (making 20 in the last week) and another lot of random movies to go through. As I've said before, I just picked up anything off the shelf that I thought had sexy stuff or nudity in it and just went with it. Generally disappointing that Devil's Prey only has nudity from someone who isn't even credited considering the movie is about sacrificing young people for Satan. Movie is prime for it, but no. Not even Jennifer Lyons, who has never had a proper nude scene (as far as I know) despite playing a bimbo every single time. Slash is a South African horror movie made for the American movie market, another movie that probably should have had nudity in it because it's plenty sexed up.

I have quite a few more series lying around as it turns out that I've only capped the tip of the iceberg of the old series when I thought I'd only have a hundred or so, turns out there's over 300 I haven't redone. Not all of them can be redone because the original sources don't exist any more or are hard-to-find including a number of VHS series I did back in the day (yes, that's how long I've been doing this). Also quite a few music videos that I'm not going to go back to do and some series that just aren't worth redoing because I only capped them because of the actress(es) in the movie and there really isn't anything that sexy. But it does leave a lot, which I'll leave for a little while, maybe do one week of redux series a month. I should really do some new stuff...

Redux for 16 March...

Another round of random series from the pre-johnny-moronic.com era which makes 16 series in 4 days, something that took a helluva lot longer back when I first capped them. It probably helped that I didn't have to watch the movies which I most likely did back then and it would only take 20-30 minutes per movies to go through and make videos from plus I had my original collages to check what to cap. The main reason why I've been doing these updates is that I've been going hog wild getting old DVDs I capped and just hoarding them instead of capping them, so a whole lot of hard drive space needs to be freed up.

Redux for 15 March...

All about Mandy Moore in today's redux update and her movies released between 2003-2004. How To Deal and Chasing Liberty are very much teen movies, with How To Deal having the most anonymous male model lead ever, an absolute loss only cast for his looks. All I Want (I think known as Try Seventeen in some areas) is your typical annoying indie where Elijah Wood moves into an apartment and every woman he comes across instantly falls for him despite having nothing going for him. Also just to add salt into the wound, he's a writer who uses a typewriter, yep, it's bullshit all the way in this classic. Amazing that this movie sat on the shelf for over a year before going straight-to-DVD...

Debatable that you can see Mandy's nipple in the below video from How To Deal, it's probably a nipple, but I wouldn't stake my life on it. Feels more like that Jessica Alba scene in Paranoid which is definitely a shadow. Also get the feeling that the 'nude' scenes including just her bare back in Chasing Liberty are all done by a double. Whomever is in the shots is very still and we never get a good look at even the side of her face. Ah, she was and is never getting naked on screen...

Update for 8 March...

Last week I posted some video from a TV screening of Teenage Kicks. Today, I've gotten a HD version and watched it.

Teenage Kicks is a drama about Miklós (Miles Szanto), a teenage boy who's sick of his family and is planning on going north with his best friend Dan (Daniel Webber), who he has a major crush on and is not sure if he would reciprocate. One day, Miklós spies his brother in a comprising position and then he runs off. During the ensuing chase, Miklós's brother is hit by a car and dies. His brother's death alienates him further from his family but finds a friend in his brother's pregnant girlfriend Annuska (Shari Sebbens). His friendship with Dan hits a roadblock when Dan introduces his new girlfriend Phaedra (Charlotte Best) and she becomes problem for Miklós, particularly when they have a brief fling. Miklós also finds refuge with a group of junkies which unleashes his homosexuality s well as getting him involved with drugs. Can Miklós get back on track with Dan and his family? An extension of the short film Drowning with the same lead actor, Teenage Kicks is a pretty solid feature debut about a teenage boy struggling to find his way after a tragedy. Worth a look if you're into coming-of-age teenage dramas with a gay slant.

Great to see some brief nudity from Charlotte Best, something I was hoping for but not expecting, would hope for something better in the future. And I've just seen a trailer for a movie called Skinford that is coming soon and Charlotte shows her bottom and maybe her breasts in the trailer. Very promising!

Redux for 4 March...

More reduxes from the pre-johnny-moronic.com era, this time the German movie series Anatomie 1 and 2. Movies are basically horror thrillers based around rogue medical students who perform illegal experiments to improve themselves and of course they end up going to far. Usually don't cap European movies (apart from Spanish movies) as they are well covered elsewhere, but this was from the period when I just capped anything I came across and during this time there was a bit of love for movies starring Franka Potente thanks to Run Lola Run and this is reason why Anatomie was released here when pretty much every other German movie doesn't.
