Update for 31 March...

The 90s weekend just with the one movie for the weekend, the 1997 erotic drama sequel Another Nine & A Half Weeks, a terrible follow up to the hit original where it looks like a cash-in without many involved with the original (Zalman King and Adrian Lyne aren't on board). Well they did get Mickey Rourke back, who looks mostly bored and barely musters up the energy to get through the movie as he pines for the missing Kim Basinger. Angie Everhart provides the sex appeal and does her best but there's little heat between her and Rourke. Strangely, there is another follow up to 9 1/2 Weeks released a year later called The First 9 1/2 Weeks that looks to be even less related to the original. Must keep a look out for that one...

Redux time once more and this time a movie I first capped this month 12 years ago, the true life serial killer drama Karla. Pretty disturbing nudity most of it revolving around sexual violence but tells the movie from the point of view of the woman behind the killings which borders on giving her an out by suggesting she was abused into committing some of the crimes which seems at best a partial truth. Anyway, plays more like a made-for-TV movie which hinders its impact.

Update for 25 March...

90s weekend a day late as I had other things to do and then I added a couple more with the extra day. Some quick synopses:

Meet Joe Black is a tedious 3 hour movie about a rich man settling up with the help of the grim reaper before he dies and in the meantime, the grim reaper samples Earthly delights including the rich man's daughter (Claire Forlani). This movie feels like it's 10 hours long...

Head Above Water is a black comedy about a young woman (Cameron Diaz) and her much older judge husband (Harvey Keitel) who are forced to dispose of a body of a former boyfriend of the woman's who makes an unexpected visit and then promptly dies. Not bad.

A Perfect Murder is an OK remake of Dial M For Murder when an older man (Michael Douglas) finds that his much younger wife (Gwyneth Paltrow) is having an affair with an artist (Viggo Mortensen). So the older man decides to force the artist to kill his wife only for it to go wrong.

Threesome is a comedy about three college roommates (Stephen Baldwin, Josh Charles, Lara Flynn Boyle) who become very close friends and lovers in a menage a trois. Not bad.

Paper Mask is a British drama/thriller about a man (Paul McGann) who poses as a doctor and gets a prestigious placement and becomes in way over his head but surprisingly become successful until a patient unexpectedly dies and the lies start to unravel. Quite well done and has a pretty thrilling ending.

Update for 22 March...

Another redux Wild Things series, this time the last of the series that I haven't capped in HD, Wild Things 3: Diamonds In The Rough. I capped the second movie a couple of weeks back and was going to cap this movie last week but it ended up being bigger than I thought in the time I had, so I pushed it back a week.

Funnily enough I've misremembered this movie as it's almost identical to the second movie which I think is the worst of the series. Hell, the first 20 minutes is almost a shot for shot remake but it slowly veers away from the second movie plot wise. I remember enjoying the 3rd movie the most but the bar is pretty low when it comes to the Wild Things series and this movie is just OK but has some pretty sexy scenes along the way so much so I think it's the sexiest of the series although the uncut version of the original is not far behind. Sadly though, no proper nudity from either Serah or Sandra, actually IMDB has another interesting bit of trivia about this:

This is interesting as Serah also clearly used a body double, so I wonder if she took the same pay cut (which is pretty steep). It should be noted that Sandra later got naked in an episode of the TV series Femme Fatales. Ah well, at least it's handled far better than the second movie. Also of note is that neither Serah or Sandra seem to be acting any more. It's the curse, the Wild Things curse I totally made up two weeks ago, I told you...

Update for 17 March...

A small detour on the 90s update with a couple of late 80s movies. I've only ever seen these movies in caps or video form so I was intrigued to see both released on Bluray in the last week or so.

Slam Dance is an off-beat thriller about an artist (Tom Hulce) who inadvertedly becomes mixed up in the death of a former fling (Virginia Madsen) and struggles to keep the cops (including Harry Dean Stanton), the killers and his wife (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) at bay. Interesting but doesn't really work because too much is going on and I'm still confused as to why the killers were so interested in framing someone who'd basically forgotten about the dead woman.

Spellbinder is an occult thriller about hotshot lawyer (Tim Daly) who with his friend (Rick Rossovich) stop a fight between a man and his girlfriend (Kelly Preston). He takes her to his house and it turns out she's a witch and they immediately hit it off and fall for one another but then strange people start coming after him to give them back the girlfriend and then she disappears causing him to find out why these strange events are happening. Fairly straightforward thriller with a pretty obvious twist, nothing special but watchable I guess. There's an interesting tidbit on IMDB about this movie which is pretty bizarre:

Be interesting to know if it was true, I doubt it as there's plenty of movies where Kelly Preston is naked floating around and they are fairly widely available. If anything I'd reckon the witchcraft angle would've been a bigger dealbreaker. Anyway, the movie is now on Bluray in great quality as you'll see below.

Set It Off is a fairly good heist thriller where four down and out women decide to fight back against the system by robbing a bunch of banks but of course there are consequences to these actions. A very commercial thriller and as far as heist thrillers from that period go, I think Dead Presidents is definitely better, but it's not a bad little movie.

Update for 12 March...

A couple of new Riley Keough movies. The House That Jack Built is a drama following the life of a serial killer (Matt Dillon) and 5 instances where he killed somebody. Typical Lars von Trier movie, incredibly cold and nasty and very philosophical about life as a serial killer. Not an easy watch and borderline unwatchable if you haven't watched a von Trier movie before. Not a fan of this one. Hold The Dark is a thriller about a young boy who it taken by wolves and his mother (Riley Keough) asks a well known wolf hunter (Jeffrey Wright) to find the boy. When he finds the boy dead, it's only the beginning as it starts a series of events where his life is in danger. Pretty good, some brutal scenes like the director's previous work (Blue Ruin, Green Room), definitely worth a look.

Update for 10 March...

After a week off the 90s weekend is back with 3 more 90s movies. Hadn't seen Grace Of My Heart but remember it being a minor hit back in the day and it's actually a movie about a woman songwriter in the 60s played by Illeana Douglas, in what was a vehicle for her, who traverses the period and various musical style changes all the while trying to make her very own album. It's pretty watchable movie but having said that, it's very corny and more than a little daft as it is a love letter to 60s music plus Illeana Douglas's character is always mooning after some bloke. The story involving with Matt Dillon's character who's an obvious Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys cypher is where it threatens to get completely lost up its own arse but it holds on just mainly due to Illeana and John Turturro's very New York record producer.

Update for 8 March...

A pre-johnny-moronic.com HD redux appearing on this site for the first time. Wild Things 2 is clearly the worst of the Wild Things series and that's saying something as it's not exactly high quality to begin with. Basically a rehash of the original but with less sex and nudity despite being straight-to-DVD, hell the requisite threesome scene is a total letdown. There are times throughout the movie where they don't even hide how close to the original it is hell, it starts in the exact same way with a sexual hygiene assembly. At least think of something different... Interesting to see that the two lead actresses don't act any more, geez, it being nearly 10 years for both and the girl who plays Susan Ward's best friend Katie Stuart also seems to have quit. A curse perhaps...

Well, I now have only the 3rd Wild Things to cap, which I'll hope to get around to doing soon enough, but from memory there's a lot more to cap than in this movie.

Update for 7 March...

Another three TV movies in today's update. The Wrong Neighbor is another stalker thriller where Ashlynn Yennie attempts to usurp her way into a family. The promo makes it look like Michael Madsen is going to be 'the wrong neighbor' but he's barely in it despite getting top billing, but is a blast as a gruff swim coach that he clearly only turned up for a day or two of shooting. My Sweet Audrina was on TV locally yesterday starring India Eisley, so that definitely piqued my interest and there was some good stuff to cap. Didn't really watch it but it looks like the usual Virginia Andrews adaptation about a fucked up family; they all are. Sleepwalking In Suburbia is about a woman who starts sleepwalking and fucking around the neighbourhood and then the bodies start to pile up and she gets the blame. Good scam if you can get away with it...

A couple of TV movies in today's update. Plenty to cap in Jodi Arias: Dirty Little Secret, a sexy true murder story from a few years ago. Pretty stock standard stuff but Tania Raymonde looks damn good throughout. Stalked By My Doctor: Patient's Revenge is the third in a series with Eric Roberts playing a perverted schizophrenic doctor who can't help but kidnapping and cutting up girls. Absolutely ridiculous and no idea how it got to a third movie but then most TV movies wouldn't get made if they were sensible.

Update for 4 March...

3 new movies in today's update.

The Favourite is a drama where Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) runs 18th century England although she is ailing and the country is run in lieu by her friend Lady Marlborough (Rachel Weisz) as the country is on the verge of war with France. Abigail (Emma Stone) is formerly from a good family who knew Lady Marlborough but those days are long over as she starts as a servant. She quickly impresses the Lady and she makes Abigail her maid but Abigail is ambitious and wants to get back to what she believes is her place in society. She finds out that the Queen and the Lady are having an affair and she uses that information to plot her way into the Queen's good books. She is also courted by Masham (Joe Alwyn) who wants her but cannot marry below his station. When the Lady finds Abigail has usurped her in the Queen's bed, she demotes her back to servant but Abigail uses her new found leverage to become the Queen's maid. The Lady and Abigail go tit-for-tat in a petty feud which ends badly for the Lady but it might also end badly for Abigail. I've been a bit of a latecomer to the films of director Yorgos Lanthimos and Dogtooth, The Lobster and The Killing Of A Sacred Deer are pretty decent but also very odd movies and The Favourite continues on that tradition. The three lead actresses are all great leading with Oscar winner Olivia Colman but Emma Stone seems fairly underrated for her work here as she plays a conniving character quite well. Yes, it's a period movie but one that is very different from the usual period movie with a fair amount of black humour and very odd moments throughout. Well worth a look.

Donnybrook is a thriller about two men who are on a self-destructive path to a no-holds barred 'donnybrook' for $100,000. Jarhead Earl (Jamie Bell) is desperately trying to keep his family together so he robs a gun store and when he gets back, he finds his mother buying drugs from Chainsaw Angus (Frank Grillo) and gets into a fight with him which almost leads to Chainsaw killing Jarhead Earl. Chainsaw is a drug dealer/maker with his somewhat simple sister Delia (Margaret Qualley) who has fallen for her brother much to his disgust. Chainsaw bashes one cohort and gets Delia to finish him off but when Chainsaw rejects Delia, she shoots him and runs away. A wounded Chainsaw brutalises his way to finding his sister and Jarhead Earl, who is on his way to the donnybrook with his much younger brother while Delia later hitches a ride. A cop Whalen (James Badge Dale) is one the trail of Chainsaw and Jarhead Earl. They are all going to end up with facing off with one another whether it's in or out of the cage. Nasty and just plain ugly movie with very little to redeem it. All characters are revolting (which is not a bad thing, see The Favourite) and do revolting things, mostly extremely unnecessary violence and then the movie ends in the cheering on of such extreme violence. I'm not sure I get the point of the movie but then nothing much seems to matter throughout. Thank fuck for some Margaret Qualley full frontal nudity because there's nothing else to recommend it. Terrible...

Lords of Chaos is a drama about the birth of Norwegian Black Metal in the 1980s. Euronymous (Rory Culkin) is obsessed with metal and with his band Mayhem he goes about creating a new metal musical genre. But, the band doesn't have a lead singer so they put out an ad to find one and they do in the Swedish 'Dead' (Jack Kilmer), who has the perfect voice for Euronymous's vision but is also incredibly depressed and self-destructive. After a successful show where Dead cuts himself up very badly, the next morning Dead (rather graphically) kills himself and is found by Euronymous where he finds Dead's death as the perfect point to expand his vision to a music store and label as well as the perfect cover image. Now Mayhem need a new lead singer and along comes 'Varg' (Emory Cohen) who Euronymous thinks is a poser but he keeps making all the right moves and he is also ambitious and extremely loyal to Euronymous to the point that if he says to do something, Varg does it, like burning down a church to get promotion for his music. Varg continues to burn down churches eventually with Euronymous tagging along and then he jokes about killing someone, which Varg does to a man who propositions him. Euronymous becomes incredibly disturbed by Varg behaviour but not because of what he's doing instead he's more worried about him leaving the band. Euronymous hooks up with photographer/groupie Ann-Marit (Sky Ferreira) who pushes him to move onto other things just as Varg goes public to the media about his deeds. Varg becomes increasingly paranoid about Euronymous which is not going to end well for one of them. Gotta admit I'm no metal fan or a fan of the movies of Jonas Åkerlund (Spun and the recent Polar) but this was a pretty engrossing movie albeit with some unnecessarily graphic scenes (that suicide scene is something else). Both Culkin and Cohen are quite good, you never really know the true motives of Varg (there's a few hints at Nazism which are brushed off quickly) and there's enough (possibly made up) history of Norwegian metal to keep fans of the genre happy. A far more interesting movie than Åkerlund's previous movies and surprisingly well done.
