New Zealand Classics for 30 May...

A couple of odd late 90s genre movies in today's New Zealand Classics update.

The Irrefutable Truth About Demons is a 2000 cult thriller where anthropologist and part-time cult buster Harry Ballard (Karl Urban) receives a video tape of a cult meeting that he doesn't have much interest in, but when he goes home for the night, he is accosted by an odd young woman, Bennie (Katie Wolfe), with an offer of assistance which he dismisses, but then he is kidnapped by a group of weirdos. He barely escapes before they can do something to him and finds his way to his girlfriend Celia (Sally Stockwell) who helps him. During the night, she is murdered in his home and a message is left in blood on the wall that he did it. Harry hides out in a hotel and gets his assistant to do some checking, but he is also murdered in the process. That is when he meets the cult leader in the tape, Le Valliant (Jonathon Hendry), but before he can take him, Bennie drags Harry away and tells him that she was in this cult with Harry's recently deceased brother and that she can help him against Le Valliant. Then the strangest thing happens; he sees the very dead Celia walking into his apartment and she convinces him that he's been dreaming the last couple of days. It's about to become clear that it's all been very real and he is been played for a fool, but by who? Baffling movie about 'demons' wanting to live forever with a surprisingly nasty tone. It also has that oddball genre feel that only seems to happen in Australian/New Zealand movies where the supporting characters are dialled up to 11 with wackiness/craziness while the main character is lucky to be a 5 (exhibit A of this - all Mad Max movies). The final act is so bizarre, lots of pulling hearts of the people's chests and so fairly full-on scenes. I really don't know about this movie, a truly bizarre effort.

The Ugly is a 1997 serial killer thriller where inexperienced psychologist Dr. Karen Schumaker (Rebecca Hobbs) is the latest doctor to attempt to get to the bottom of notorious serial killer Simon (Paolo Rotondo). We find out that he had a very domineering mother (Jennifer Ward-Lealand) who refuses to let him know about his father and is bullied frequently at school mainly because he is dumb and cannot read. His one ray of light is school mate Julie, who becomes his only friend, but when his mother refuses to let Julie be his friend after she finds her reading a letter from his father to him, he is left with no one but his mother. Not long after, he kills his mother. He tries to live a normal life, but finds it impossible with the urge to kill rising and continued bullying in adult life. He claims to see images of dead people who tell him he must kill and he starts killing people to stop this from happening, mainly women. One night when he is carting his next victim to their resting place, he hits a dog with his car and he takes the dog to a vet where Julie works as a veterinary nurse. He decides that he wants her for himself and kills her brother who he mistakes for her lover, but it eventually leads becoming closer to Julie, but those urges won't go away and no one is safe. Not Julie or Karen. Another odd movie with supporting characters up to 11 in wackiness/craziness, but is held together well with a solid relationship between serial killer and psychologist. Very nasty movie with a number of throats cut both dreamt and in reality and Rotondo plays a believable killer (Is that a good thing?). Not a bad watch if you're into serial killer movies. Strange that this movie seems to have fallen away in popularity considering this movie actually featured on that Boogeyman DVD with Simon being listed as one of the great horror bad guys. Not convinced that's the case, but he must've impressed someone involved and he is a very effective killer. Wonder if there was ever going to be The Ugly 2?

Also featured below is the 1994 New Zealand short film La Vie En Rose which starred Katie Wolfe and she has a nude scene in it. Found it on the Oyster Farmer DVD which I capped years ago and just remembered that Katie Wolfe was naked in that. Seems to be on the other side of the camera nowadays, I remember seeing a short film she directed, This Is Her, getting a regular run when SBS used to have a short film show.

Redux Friday for 27 May...

Collages and videos from Sin City are available here.

That time of the week again and this time I'm redoing the original Sin City movie which I capped about 11 years ago and was in serious need of an update. I was going to do that thing were I do a redux then cap a sequel that I hadn't already done with Sin City, but I underestimated how much I had to do, so I will need a bit more time than I expecting to get it done.

This is from the extended version, a bafflingly unnecessary version of the movie with little new stuff, even 3x the credits and renders the opening scene of the movie unnecessary, but is still there...

New Zealand Classics for 25 May...

Now I'm moving onto New Zealand Classics. What next? Vanuatuan Classics? Fijian Classics? I think there's only ever been a few Fijian movies. Anyway... I've been stockpiling a few New Zealand movies and without realising it, the pile is about 20-30 large, so it's time to actually doing something about it.

First up is the 1997 twentysomething dramedy Topless Women Talk About Their Lives and well the title is of course misleading, but it garners interest. Following the lives of bunch of twentysomething friends living in Auckland who have complicated love lives and such, their world seems to revolve around Liz (Danielle Cormack). When we pick it up, Liz is 17 weeks pregnant and has missed her abortion appointment, well, she's missed it by a week and is now forced to have the child, much to her disgust. It doesn't help that she refuses to name the father and strings along friend and former fling Neil (Joel Tobeck) and her current boyfriend Geoff (Andrew Binns) and that doesn't look like lasting much longer. Plus, Geoff's girlfriend Bryony (Josephine Davison) is back from overseas and he'd very much like to continue seeing her. Meanwhile, Ant (Ian Hughes) has just had his appalling screenplay made into a movie in Germany and is about premiere locally and it's suddenly hit him he might be successful. Also, Liz's best friend Prue (Willa O'Neill) and Mike (Shimpal Lelisi) have decided to get married and are doing so in his home in Niue. This is despite Prue worrying about the increasingly unstable Ant. How will they all survive the year? Very 90s movie that was actually began as a multi-part 3-5 minute TV series that I remember seeing a few episodes of back in the day on SBS (I think it was before 1997 too). Turned into a movie when the makers received funding (it also shows in the TV series which switches from video to film about halfway through). And that's the problem with this movie. I made the mistake of watching the TV series first as the movie is basically the last 20 episodes of the TV series with some small changes plus an ending which wraps up the various storylines. The problem is that the movie starts not having set up any characters and we are put straight into the chaos and a lot is left unexplained in the movie as has been explained in the TV series. So, it takes a while to work things out because the plot and characters are underdeveloped. A shame really as there are some good dramatic and comic moments throughout including a very interesting birth scene. It reminds me a fair bit of the Australian movie Love and Other Catastrophes although this movie is far more episodic because of it's TV origins, but it's that 'make up the plot in the days before the shoot' aesthetic that works for the movie. And this helped particularly when Danielle Cormack became pregnant in real life and the plot changed completely (amazing to think that baby would probably be 20 years-old now). Anyway, Topless Women Talk About Their Lives is better seen as a TV series than in movie form.

Videos from the Topless Women Talk About Their Lives TV series are available on the TV part of the site. Most videos are the same in slightly worse quality, fairly interlaced at times, but there are some slightly different edits plus a few videos from the first 20 episodes that are set before the movie. Plus in the movie, Danielle Cormack is completely naked when she rubs oil on her pregnant belly but is wearing a singlet in the TV series version. Of course, Danielle Cormack and Joel Tobeck are seen fairly regularly on New Zealand and Australian TV and sometimes movies. The other main actors seem to get regular work in NZ, except Willa O'Neill, who seemed to have quit acting in 2000, likely after the follow-up to this movie, The Price Of Milk (also starring Cormack). She seems to be back acting again. Also of note is that a young girl at the end of the movie is played by Rose McIver, who's doing quite well in America right now. Seems to have been acting all her life...

Update for 23 May...

Another Spanish movie.

Segon Origen (Second Origin) is a post-apocalyptic drama where a strange occurrence like a fireball obliterates the entire planet except at the moment of the occurrence, Alba (Rachel Hurd-Wood) was saving the life of 10 year-old Didac, who was drowning underwater and they both miraculously survive. The duo are forced to learn how to live after a scorched earth with only themselves to do everything. After an initial struggle, they manage to survive ten years and things begin to change. Didac (Ibrahim Mané), now 20 years old, begin to take a liking to Alba in a more sexual way and after initial reluctance, Alba falls for Didac. Alba becomes pregnant and has a child and then one day, a boat sails in from the sea with the first person (Sergi López) they have seen since the occurrence. He seems friendly enough and is helpful at first, but one day their child is taken by the man and Alba and Didac will do anything to get the child back. Not a lot going on in the movie which is basically a two-hander for most of its running time. Not exactly thrilling stuff either until the man comes along and even that feels a bit forced as a way of ending the movie. It seems that this was the last movie that noted Spanish director Bigas Luna (Jamón, Jamón, Yo Soy La Juani, Di Di Hollywood, Volavérunt also The Tit and the Moon and Bámbola) was working on before he died and I can't help but think what he would have done with this considering his love of making more 'sexual' movies. Sadly, this movie doesn't add much to the already crowded post-apocalyptic genre.

Update for 17 May...

A couple of 'bogan' Australian movies, but very different from one another.

There's Something In The Pilliga is a found footage horror movie where Peter (or as he wants to be called Jay) (Brendan Byrne) and his buddy Dylan go looking for a good time on New Years Eve. At a pub, they meet Liz (Leoni Leaver), who looks very keen on the boys and her friend Tammy (Rebecca Callander) who just wants to get away from a persistent pest. They leave the bar to go to out to their friend Hermie's house to have a bit more fun, but find he isn't home and has seemingly disappeared with just sketches and details of a local monster, the yowie, on his wall. Jay and Dylan go looking for him leaving the girls in the truck for 4 hours before they decide to head to the road to hitch back to town, but Jay and Dylan catch up with them and now their dog is also missing. While looking for the dog, Dylan finds the dead body of a woman they saw earlier at the pool, but instead of going to the cops, Jay harangues the group into dumping the body where the pigs will finish her off. With all disgusted with Jay, they continue on and after a brief encounter with a cop, Jay hears his dog barking and goes to get him and then night comes... Not a lot happens in this movie, very little suspense and then 20 minutes of Blair Witch-style running in the forest with a camera style action where we never really see what's going on. I'm not sure whether this movie is supposed to be scary or not because if it is supposed to be scary, it does not succeed. Plus that final shot is completely baffling, I can't work out what's happening, who's doing what or even why it happening or it's significance to the rest of the movie. I just don't think this movie works.

Dumb Criminals in a comedy movie where two mates, Rabbit (Paul Fenech) and Rongo (Kevin Taumata) are in prison with their druggie mates Jimmie the Junkie (Alex Romano) and Pothead (Benny Maclean). When trying to avoid a bikie named Tiny as he's fucked Tiny's girlfriend, sister, cousin and mother, Rabbit speaks with old friend Biker Bob (Andy McPhee), who dying and want Rabbit and Rongo to help get money to his daughter Sharnelle (Elle Dawe) who has a daughter who is sick and needs an expensive operation. They decide to uphold that pledge when the four friends get out of prison, but the only way they know to get money is through crime and they are not good at getting away with it. Biker Bob dies, but he haunts Rabbit who goes on an increasing ramshackle crime spree that only ends up pissing off the biker gang, The Hunters. The head of the gang, Angry (Angry Anderson) gets them to go to Las Vegas to kill the accountant that stole from them, but they also still have to get the money. Can they do both and save Sharnelle's daughter's life? Dumb Criminals, a movie length version of the web series, which in turn is exactly the same as everything Paul Fenech (Housos, Housos vs. Authority, Fat Pizza vs Housos) has ever done, just with new characters played by the same people. Nothing is ever going to change in Fenech's world as he plays to his built-in audience and as per usual, Dumb Criminals is pretty bad, but there's a few laughs here and there and about a million misses. This is also the laziest Fenech has been in a while (and that's saying something), rehashing a fair chunk of his web series, but what else should we expect at this point.

Videos from the Dumb Criminals web series are available on the TV part of the site. Quite a few are exactly the same, just in HD. See what I mean by rehashing...

Redux for 15 May...

Collages and videos from Wild Things: Foursome are available here.

Today's update is one of the sequels to Friday's update, Wild Things: Foursome now in full HD. Best described (by me) with the best girls of the series in the worst movie in the series although the more I think about and I think about this way too much, the girls of Diamonds in the Rough aren't far behind. Forgot how bad Foursome is, the plot makes so little sense even after the entire plot is explained during the credit and I love how we only find out about Marnette Patterson's character's death via a newspaper article, which in Wild Things lore means nothing except in this case when it was a convenient way to kill off a character who was getting in the way of an ending in a clear case of the ending written first and the plot an afterthought. Let's face it, the only reason I'm watching these movies are the girls and even that can be a frustrating way to watch. Marnette Patterson not showing her breasts and general shyness during the foursome. Disappointing to say the least. Mind you the threesome in Wild Things 2 is an all-time disappointing bore.

I seriously doubt Wild Things 2 and 3 will end up on Bluray mainly because no one is really interested in them, maybe as a set 4 movies is the only way. This is what happened with the Species movies somewhere recently, so you never know. If I can be bothered, I might get a HD copy of 2 and 3 off iTunes and cap from that, slightly lesser quality but still pretty good. Also, isn't it time for another Wild Things movie, either a fifth entry or even a reboot with a A-list cast like the original. Everyone else is doing it, why not?

A ridiculous amount of collages and what I originally thought about Wild Things: Foursome are available here.

Update for 13 May...

Another one of those updates where I do a redux series of a sequel that I originally capped and then I go back and cap a previous movie. Anyway, the original is today and hopefully I'll have one of the sequels finished tomorrow. Realised I haven't seen Wild Things since I saw it in cinemas back in the day and well, this movie has very 90s feel about it from the clothes to the musical choices. I miss these rampant sexual movies which were regularly released in the 90s, now you're lucky to get a studio release like this once a year. Not to say that I'm a big fan of Wild Things, I always remember being very lukewarm on the movie although that never stopped me watching the sequels. This rewatch reaffirmed that position even with this being the Uncut version which has a couple of extra/longer sexy scenes (this version has never been released in Australia as far as I know). This includes Denise getting her bikini top taken off in the second girl-girl scene which doesn't happen in the original and one of those plot hole fillers at the end gets an extra one where Denise Richards gets her breasts fondled during sex. These additions aren't much at all, in fact a couple of scenes could've easily been left out, not the nude scenes of course, but some superfluous scenes that don't add anything. Ah well...

Update for 9 May...

Another Spanish movie today.

Palmeras En La Nieve (Palm Trees In The Snow) is a drama where Killan (Mario Casas), a young Spanish man, goes to the island of Fernando Poo (an island off the West African coast that is a part of Equatorial Guinea) where his father and brother is work with them. It is a time of heavy political upheaval with the last remnants of Spanish rule playing out on the island during Killan's time there. In 2003, Killan's daughter Clarence (Adriana Ugarte), is doing her PhD and after her father dies, she decides to look into her father's time on the island. She knows that he left the island in the 70s and gets the help of local guide Iniko (Djedje Apali), who she falls in love with, although this proves dangerous as things are very different. When Iniko discovers that Clarence has a photograph of a group of people on the island, to his surprise, he recognises that one of the people in the picture is his mother. Iniko takes Clarence to his mother and she recalls that as a nurse back in the 70s, Bisila (Berta Vázquez) had a relationship with Killan that lasted many years and they even had a son together who is Iniko's brother (Phew! Because if it was Iniko...). Interesting and sweeping tale which even at 165 minutes is never boring despite being a familiar tale of political intrigue and a love that can never be. Casas looks like he's going to be next big Spanish star and is great here and newcomer Vázquez is gorgeous and plays a convincing lover for Killan. Worth a look if you are into epic tales of love.

Update for 7 May...

Haven't been down the Spanish road in a while, so here's a couple of series from new Spanish movies including Ocho Apellidos Catalanes, a sequel to the big Spanish hit Ocho Apellidos Vascos. I didn't watch it as I have no subtitles but I did watch La Novia.

La Novia (The Bride) is a melodrama where The Bride (Inma Cuesta) is marrying her long time friend The Bridegroom (Asier Etxeandia). Everything seems fine, but there's something nagging at The Bride that manifests itself in an old woman who warns her of things to come. It seems that The Bride and Bridegroom also had another friend Leonardo (Álex García) who are linked by a tragic event and that nagging feeling that The Bride wants to be with Leonardo and he wants her despite being married (Leticia Dolera) with a young child. During the wedding and into the reception, the tension grows with The Bride's feelings for Leonardo growing more and more despite marrying The Bridegroom. The Bridegroom's mother is wary of this and tries desperately to make sure it doesn't happen. Then, they can't take it any more and escape to give in to one another, but The Bridegroom is having none of that and will take back what's his. Wow, this is a proper melodrama, extremely dramatic and full of quiet and very loud desperation, to the point where it actually gets quite full on in the end. I obviously don't watch a lot of melodramas as this movie took me by surprise by how intense and devastating it becomes. Yeah, it's all over-the-top, but it works very well and Cuesta is excellent in the lead. Definitely worth a look if you are into these types of movies.

Update for 5 May...

Backgammon is a drama where a group of friends get together for the weekend at a house by the sea. Lucian (Noah Silver) is there with his girlfriend, but feels left out as he doesn't seem to know anyone while Miranda (Brittany Allen) lives at the house with her painter boyfriend and they are clearly having problems in their relationship. Lucian's girlfriend leaves and after a drunken game of poker between Lucian and the boyfriend, Lucian wins his entire collection of paintings, although he has little interest in taking it. The next morning, Miranda alerts Lucian that her boyfriend has gone away in a huff and that they are the only two people at the house. Lucian decides to stay with Miranda, who seems a bit flaky as she only seems to give half answers or changes the subject frequently. After a dip in the sea, they come back to the house to see that the boyfriend's latest painting has changed suggesting that he is still around. Lucian and Miranda start to fall for one another although this seems to be pushes as a diversionary tactic by Miranda and when that doesn't work, she threatens to kill herself. So, why does Miranda want Lucian to stay, what happened to the boyfriend and why does the painting continues to change? Strange movie, basically a two-hander and again not a lot happens (seems to be a common thread in the movies I'm currently watching...). Brittany Allen's character is incredibly frustrating and I described her a flaky, but I think that's being generous as by the end she's a fully-blown lunatic. Lucian doesn't do much more than react to her increasing lunacy. I didn't hate the movie, but it did frustrate me quite a bit, so I really can't recommend it.

Update for 3 May...

The Survivalist is a drama where a survivalist (Martin McCann) lives off the land with limited supplies and contact with other people. One day a mother and daughter (Olwen Fouéré and Mia Goth) arrive on his doorstep looking for shelter with some small offering plus the promise of the daughter being a sexual companion. The survivalist reluctantly accepts weary that they might be trying to kill him, which it turns out they are. During one such attempt on his life by the mother, the daughter wonders off to wash herself and is taken by a rival survivalist who in a struggle to get her back, shoots the survivalist who then kills the rival. He is nursed back to health by the two women, but supplies are now at critical point and only enough for two, so who is going to be the one that is sacrificed? Quiet slow burn drama where not a lot happens but offers enough intrigue to last the distance. Definitely not for those that aren't patient.

Darling is a horror drama where Darling (Lauren Ashley Carter) is charged with looking after a mansion but she soon discovers that there is something in house that is causing her distress. One day, Darling drops her necklace and a man (Brian Morvant) picks it up and gives it to her. She is startled by the man, but later meets him in a bar and takes him to the mansion, where a madness takes over her and she kills him and cuts him up. That's pretty much it for the movie, a stylish experimental movie that is hard to describe and to be honest, is a bit of a trial to watch even at 75 minutes. I liked Lauren Ashley Carter in The Woman and Jug Face and she's the main reason to watch this movie, but I can't recommend it for any other reason.
