Update for 30 July...

Time for some Australian Classics with 3 movies from the 80s including a couple featuring the Carides sisters.

Kadaicha (Stones Of Death) is a 1988 horror thriller where a group of high school friends start having dreams about meeting a Kadaicha, an Aboriginal man who stands in judgement of people who disrespect their culture and gives those sentenced stones which signifies that they have been sentenced to death. Well, those high school friends wake up with the stones and within 24 hours, they are killed by an animal controlled by the Kadaicha. It seems that one of the friends, Gail's (Zoe Carides in her first movie) father (Eric Oldfield) is developing a shopping centre and has disturbed a sacred Aboriginal burial site where white people massacred a group of Aborigines a hundred years previously and the Kadaicha has been awoken looking for revenge. Gail then has the dream and receives a stone and now it's a race against time to work out how to stop the curse from striking her dead. Fairly average horror thriller but maybe the best of the Aboriginal horror movies which tells you how bad The Dreaming, Prey and Red Billabong are. While there's a fair amount of respect shown the Aboriginal culture, the movie is a fairly standard stalk and chase thriller and the deaths are fairly basic or unseen. One day someone will make a decent Aboriginal horror movie, maybe some actual Indigenous people.

Desolation Angels (also known as Fair Game, the laziest title ever and the title of a more well known 1986 Australian movie, so I'm going with the far better former) is a 1982 stalk and chase thriller where three teenage girls, Jilly, Joanne and Liz (Kim Trengrove, Kerry Mack and Marie O'Loughlin) finish their final year exams and decide to go to Joanne's family holiday house in Portsea to celebrate while lying to their parents about where they are going. Meanwhile, Pamela (Karen West) has just cashed a fake cheque for her dodgy bookie lover who she's trying to escape and she decides to hide out at her friend's house also in Portsea. On their way to Portsea, the girls come across a couple of black panel vans who start following them and then menacing them, forcing them off the road. They eventually escape with the help of the police and get to Portsea but that is where the men in the black panel vans are also going and they are menacing everyone they come across and it's only a matter of time they find the girls. Jilly meets Pamela and they bond over their secrets but someone has come for Pamela and the men have found the girls and it's a fight for survival as the men are a more than a bit murderous. Hateful and nasty thriller where every man is basically a violent psychopath and/or a rapey creep including one 'helpful' local played by Nick Lathouris who's first words to the girls is 'I s'pose a fuck's out of the question?'. There's two different plots going on that are linked in a rather flimsy way but are otherwise unrelated and it turns out there's two sets of killers and the murderous men have no use for Pamela apart from comically pointing a gun at her the only time they cross paths. There's not much in the nudity department with only some brief stuff from Karen West, who's only cast because she was a centrefold model and she's a pretty poor actress but this surprisingly works in her favour as it makes her character more convincing as a distant woman who prefers to be alone. No nudity from Kerry Mack in her first movie but she would have plenty of nude scenes in the future including Hostage: The Christine Maresch Story and the mini-series The Lancaster Miller Affair (and possibly more I haven't gotten around to). Very disappointing movie.

Backlash is a 1986 drama where an Aboriginal woman, Kath (Lydia Miller), is accused of murdering and cutting off the penis of her barman boss but there is significant doubt as the barman's wife caught him forcing himself onto her. Two police officers, rookie Nikki (Gia Carides) and sidelined 10-year veteran Trevor (David Argue) are charged with taking Kath across country to face the charges against her. Trevor is hard to get along with and gets on Nikki's nerves while Kath doesn't miss an opportunity to look for escape while there's a man following them who seems to be in a menacing mood. While taking a short cut suggested by Trevor, they get two flat tyres and are stuck in the middle of nowhere with only an abandoned sheep shearing station for shelter and a billabong for sustenance. With the help of Kath's local knowledge they survive adequately but no-one knows where they are and no-one is taking the 'short cut'. The three get to know one another to the point that the two police officers believe that Kath is innocent of the crime she's accused of. After finally being found a few days later, NIkki and Trevor, who has fallen in love with Kath, decide to visit the barman's wife and get to the bottom of what actually happened. But things don't necessarily go as planned... Improvised drama that shows it's limitations which isn't helped by the slow pace but becomes a fairly solid drama if you have the patience. The third act feels like a desperate need for a just resolution but then it ends in such a downbeat way that it makes the story rather sad. Good luck finding it though...

The quality of the videos below isn't the best as both Desolation Angels and Backlash are from VHS rips but they aren't too bad particularly Desolation Angels as I thought it was a write off when I first looked at it years ago but I checked it again yesterday and it was passable although I will say the framing of the image is very poor, definitely not panned and scanned with some of the video cut off. It is doubtful there will be a DVD release but you never know, Umbrella might get around to it as it is an Ozploitation title. Backlash is far less likely to see the light of day unless someone wants to do a Bill Bennett retrospective and then there'd be a bunch of movies that would be seen for the first time in 30 years like Mortgage and Malpractice (and Backlash) but they haven't done one so far, so good luck with that. Kadaicha is actually from the Umbrella DVD I finally got around to buying cheaply but the quality of the image is actually not much above VHS and the DVD has moments where the image actually tracks like a VHS release. Definitely one of their poorer releases but it's probably the best we'll ever get.

Update for 28 July...

Another movie for the 90s weekend update and it's the 1998 British love story/crime thriller B. Monkey about a school teacher Alan (Jared Harris) who spies Beatrice (Asia Argento) at a bar and falls for her. When he finally catches up with her, Beatrice agrees to go out with him as she is longing for something real and despite a false start in the bedroom, she thinks she's found the one. Of course, Beatrice's criminal past that she is desperately trying to leave behind catches up with her no thanks to her drug-addled guardian Paul (Rupert Everett, very much embracing his newly found queer side) and even when she makes a clean break, she can't escape. OK movie that was one of those British crime movie that absolutely happened because of Quentin Tarantino but has that unique British touch where every gangster was either incredibly violent or incredibly queer. And there was a whole slew of them, most of them are apparently shit according to all the British movie magazines I read at the time and I'd have to take their word for it as most of them didn't get here. To be honest, B. Monkey is a far better movie when it focuses on the central relationship as the gangster stuff is full of annoying characters, Rupert Everett at the top of that pile but Ian Hart fake tough guy whose really a queer gangster is not far behind. A very young Johnathan Rhys Meyers turns up to brood and be a distraction for Asia Argento's character and is at least bearable while a young Eddie Marsan (well, as young as a someone born as a 40 year-old man can look) turns up not really saying much.

Found this bit of trivia about the movie and well, this would've made B. Monkey a very different movie.

Sophie Okonedo is a very different actress from Argento and it would've been a very different movie, definitely with a lot less sex. Unsurprisingly, it turns out there was a lot of problems with this movie and it stayed on the shelf for two years, wild considering the director had just come off an Oscar nomination (a baffling one, but he still got one). And the less said about Weinstein (and in regards to this movie there's a helluva lot more from him), the better...

I had never seen this movie before although I thought I'd had as I'd gotten it mixed up with another Asia Argento movie from the same time, New Rose Hotel, which from memory is a movie where halfway through it basically replays the first half. But no, this movie never got released in Australia as far as I can tell and I would've absolutely watched it if it turned up on the video shelf back in the day.

Some quick series today for the 90s weekend update from a few movies that didn't have a lot to cap, so nice and easy. Anyway, I was watching Mumford and noticed that Elisabeth Moss has a small role in the movie and you never realise how long actors have been going at it (she also turned up briefly in The Last Supper four years earlier). Then I watched Kiss Of Death and wouldn't you know it but one of the main actresses from Mumford, Hope Davis, briefly turns up in Kiss Of Death playing Nicolas Cage's character's girlfriend and she went from a blink and you'll miss role to lead actress in a few years. Update for 22 July...

One more 90s horror movie that I wanted to finish off. There's Nothing Out There is a low budget horror meta comedy where a group of twentysomething looking teens go to a cabin in the woods and get attacked by some kind of alien, while one of the group goes around annoying everyone with his horror film knowledge but everything he says turns out to be true and he comes in handy when defeating the alien. The meta stuff is laid on very thick to the point where I felt like offing the doofus annoying everyone but the film never takes itself seriously and is better for it, in fact it's downright silly. The movie also does something yesterday's movie The Chill Factor only hinted at which is getting it's three female leads naked, so this movie just keeps getting better and better. Bonnie Bowers is in a bikini for the second half of the movie so there's another long video to look at and there's some extra nudity from a group of unlikely looking punks who go skinnydipping. If you like those meta horror comedies, There's Nothing Out There is worth a look.

Update for 21 July...

Another 90s update for the weekend with a couple of horror movies. The Chill Factor is a low budget demonic possession thrillers where a group of snowmobile enthusiasts end up at an abandoned camp after one of the riders is badly injured. As they are waiting for help, they play with a Ouija board like instrument called The Devil's Eye that summons the devil and starts killing the group one by one. It's an admirable effort considering it's obvious constraints but a combination of dire acting from mostly one and done actors and a plot that takes forever to get going harm the movie far more than the budget restraints. Also would've helped if there was some actual nudity instead of a constant teasing of nudity but what are you going to do? On the plus side, it's not unwatchable particularly if you fast forward to about 45 minutes in when the killings and sex start and there seems to be a pretense of having a The Texas Chainsaw Massacre style of storytelling with a similar storytelling style and narration. As I said, an admirable effort but has major issues it doesn't overcome and it doesn't help that it is a movie from one of my most hated horror genres, the Ouija board horror thriller.

Not much to say about Castle Freak except anything with the combo of director Stuart Gordon and star Jeffrey Combs (not to mention Barbara Crampton getting the Re-Animator team back together) is always worth a look, even if it's a cheap effort like this movie is. Also amusing to possibly only me is the cop is played by Luca Zingaretti, who went on to play Inspector Montalbano in the long running Italian TV series (still going apparently) and I like to think that he is playing that character in this movie and this case made his career...

Update for 20 July...

90s weekend update features a couple of movies starring Jodie Foster. Technically not a 90s movie but had it's release delayed until 1990, Backtrack aka Catchfire is a fairly straightforward running from the mafia thriller until about halfway through where it turns into a bizarre love story between a mafia hitman and his supposed victim. Directed by and starring Dennis Hopper, he sure amps up the weirdness the longer the movie gets to the point where the film stops to a walk and takes an eternity to finish despite being only 99 minutes long. Some of this is blame could probably be placed on the studio as they had major issues with the movie and edited it significantly to the point that Hopper disowned this cut of the movie. There's apparently a 3 hour cut of the movie and considering the 99 minute version feels like 3 hours long, I can only imagine how long that cut would feel. It's a strange failure of a movie; as a straight thriller there isn't much tension as Hopper's hitman is always on Foster's tail every move she makes until he decides to fall for her, hell even the mafia goons are right behind Hopper until he starts murdering them. As an offbeat love story, it isn't all that interesting as Hopper basically forces Foster to become his idealised version of her and she just falls for him without much resistance. There is a decent cast plus some bizarre cameos (particularly Bob Dylan) even a young Catherine Keener turns up for a scene so it's a shame that the movie just doesn't work and has been pretty much forgotten because of it.

Lying and Stealing is a slick thriller where an art thief tries to get out of the game as he meets an actress (Emily Ratajkowski) who has gotten herself into trouble with a sleazy producer and maybe they can help each other out. Not bad. Vault is a heist thriller about two brothers who with a gang of small time crooks rob a mob vault and then spend the aftermath avoiding the consequences of doing the robbery. Total Goodfellas wannabe but nowhere near the same class.

Update for 15 July...

Continuing the 90s update to Monday, this time with actual movies made in the 90s, well maybe only Mad Love. Watched Night Killer, an Italian thriller made in English about a woman (Tara Buckman) who survives an attack from a masked assailant who has been murdering women but when she get released from hospital, a man, possibly the same man comes after her and torments her, locking her in a hotel room while possibly continuing to kill more women as the masked assailant. Gotta say, possibly one of the worst movies I've ever seen, not helped by having a fairly poor grasp of the English language even with American actress Tara Buckman in the lead. The dialogue is just garbage with very poor readings by the actors and Tara is a poor actress, all over-the-top squealing and histrionics, not helped (or maybe it is) by her character's tendency to take down her top to expose her breasts as a reason to validate herself (I kid you not). Let's face it, Tara was cast because she's a low cost American actress who didn't have a problem with sleazy nudity. The only other movie I've seen her in was being tormented by a killer Santa who stripped her naked in Silent Night, Deadly Night, so this movie continues to typecast her. Also, the credits for this movie are appalling, barely mentioning the main cast so there's a bunch of unknown actress who get naked.

Update for 14 July...

The 90s weekend update is actually an 80s weekend update as I had a few movies I've wanted to watch lying around and decided that now would be a good time.

The Stranger is an amnesia thriller made in Argentina starring Bonnie Bedelia as a woman found after she crashed her car which was then deliberately blown up. She ends up in hospital not knowing who she is but has vivid memories of a violent incident she escaped from. Peter Riegert is the other American actor who plays a doctor trying to help her recover her memory while being forced by the bad guys to get results. Not a bad little movie as far as amnesia thrillers go and it even has a few recognisable Argentinian actors (well to me) in it like Cecilia Roth in a fairly big role as a nurse, a very young Ricardo Darin as Bonnie's lover and Federico Luppi turns up very briefly as the head of the hospital. Bonnie has a couple of brief nude scenes I've only ever seen before in caps and never knew what movie they were from until now, so it's good to see them in action. I remember watching a movie on TV a few years ago called The Gypsy Moths that also had some brief nudity from a much younger Bonnie (the movie was released in 1969) and also some rare nudity from Deborah Kerr. Of course, we know Bonnie better as John McClane's wife in Die Hard 1 and 2.

Night Game is a serial killer thriller where Roy Scheider runs around like a crazy man in pursuit of a serial killer who he works out only strikes when a certain pitcher for the Houston Astros closes out a game, which is a wild thing to work out. The movie is full of cop clichés and it has a pretty ridiculous ending where the killer of course goes after Scheider's woman (played by Karen Young) and keeps going after her even when she ends up at a restaurant full of people while Scheider magically finds her despite her running quite a distance to get to the restaurant. Ah, it's silly but it's pretty watchable if you're into serial killer thrillers and the sub plot about Scheider marrying the much younger Karen Young while her mother makes it her mission to break them up is fun.

Black Moon Rising is a heist thriller written by John Carpenter where Tommy Lee Jones plays a thief who the government gets to steal some info from a crooked company run by a someone who despises Tommy Lee. He steals the info on a digital tape and decides to hide it in an experimental car called Black Moon that is built to go extremely fast, but the car is stolen as well as a bunch of other cars from the front of a restaurant by a car stealing crew run by Linda Hamilton. Tommy Lee tracks the car down to a unique building with an underground area that he can't get into, so his only other option is to track down Hamilton to get her to help him get in and it's a good time to do so because she's on the out with her boss. Silly movie with a crazy ending but fairly fun, surprised Carpenter didn't direct it.

Update for 10 July...

It's that time again where I finally get around to capping a whole bunch of TV movies that have been on local TV recently. Always good to see actresses you've mostly forgotten turn up in TV movies, in this update it's Alexandra Holden who used to turn up as the best friend of the lead girl in movies in the early 2000s and the absolutely terrible horror movie Wishcraft and I hadn't seen in ages and she turns up in A Trick Of The Mind. Pretty standard TV movies for the most part with probably the best being Story Of A Girl which is a Bacon family affair with Kevin and daughter Sosie having small roles and Kyra Sedgwick directing. Stars Banshee's Ryann Shane as a teenage girl who attempts to overcome the consequences of a sex tape being shared online, it attempts to be something a little different and isn't too bad.

Update for 8 July...

Continuing the 90s update on Monday with a 90s New Zealand movie.

Crush is a 1992 drama where literary critic Christina (Donogh Rees) drives to Rotorua with her American friend Lane (Marcia Gay Harden) so that she can interview a writer who lives there. Not far out of town, Lane drives too fast and has a huge crash where Lane walks away from the crash with only a few scratches and leaves Christina for dead. With nowhere to go, Lane ends up in Rotorua and decides to make her presence with the writer Christina was to interview, but meets his tomboy teenage daughter Angela (Caitlin Bossley) and takes an interest in her, giving her a dress and inviting her out to the local hangout. The next morning, Lane ends up in Angela's home and meets her father Colin (William Zappa) and it isn't long before they become romantically involved. Angela starts seeing Christina in hospital, who is still comatose from the accident. She also starts visiting Horse (Pete Smith) who she met with Lane previously and has landed in hospital with a broken leg. Horse takes an unhealthy sexual interest in Angela but she doesn't seem to mind. Lane moves into Colin's home by stealth and before long Angela turns on Lane as her relationship with her father develops further and Christina gets out of her coma but has a brain injury. Christina becomes very resentful of her situation and Angela plants the seeds of Lane's role in causing it plus the fact she hasn't visited her friend at all, which gives Christina ideas of revenge. Gripping drama with the four lead actors giving fairly decent performances even if some of the actions of the characters become frustrating. It ends with a fairly shocking scene based on tensions that had been building for a fair portion of the movie. It is the debut feature of Alison Maclean, who has only made two movies since this (Jesus' Son and The Rehearsal although she's directed plenty of other things) which is a shame as Crush is a pretty decent debut movie.

Vampire Journals is a sleazy Romanian made drama that is clearly made to cash in on the sexy vampire craze and with the name Charles Band being involved, you know you're getting some cheap knock-off. Habit is a very indy drama that takes a different route but still has plenty of sex but is done in a much more arty way.

Update for 6 July...

90s weekend update with a couple of B-movies. The Hit List is a fairly solid thriller that is this close to being a very good movie but it has a ridiculous plot development that gives the movie it's title but also adds a number of superfluous characters to increase the body count. Yancy is probably best known for her later 90s movies Hard Target and Drop Zone and the TV series Witchblade, haven't seen much of her lately although she turned up in both Kick Ass movies. Shame as I quite liked seeing her in movies in the 90s and while there's some body double action, she's pretty sexy in this movie.

A House In The Hills is mostly a two hander where struggling actress Helen Slater housesits for an affulent couple in a house where a neighbour was brutally murdered recently. She opens the door to pest exterminator Michael Madsen, only for him to turn out to be just out of prison looking to exact revenge on the owners of the house. As they wait for the owners to come back, they form a bond that leads to sex while being interrupted by a persistent neighbour played by Jeffrey Tambor. And then the owners come home and all hell breaks loose. A movie that gets sillier by the minute and it takes forever to get to it's wild, over-the-top ending but Madsen is his usual self and Slater is sexy. I'm glad a HD version came out as I've had a DVD of the movie for a while and it saves me double-dipping.

Update for 4 July...

A couple of new Australian movies, both made overseas (some of Hotel Mumbai was filmed in Adelaide, probably all the interior scenes). Some quick synopses:

Hotel Mumbai is a movie restaging the 2008 terrorist attacks on Mumbai focusing mainly on the attack on Taj Hotel where guests and staff attempt to evade Islamic terrorists from Pakistan as police are helpless and completely unprepared. Tense and harrowing recreation of what happened and not an easy watch but a very well done movie. Wouldn't think there'd be anything to cap from the movie but there's a brief underwear scene from Tilda Cobham-Hervey who plays a nanny for the baby of two prominent guests. My main memory from the actual attacks bizarrely is Aussie actress Brooke Satchwell getting caught in the middle of it.

Made In Malta is a drama two hander where an American man bumps into his former girlfriend (Spanish actress Ariadna Cabrol) while visiting Malta and they click once again and attempt to rekindle that old flame only for those old issues to come creeping up once again. OK, but very talky and good to see Ariadna in another movie as its been almost 10 years since Eloïse.

Update for 3 July...

Just a bunch of stuff that I've finally gotten around to capping including a couple of movies featuring Angela Bettis. I capped Carrie with Emilie de Ravin for the Australian/NZ actresses overseas part of the site back in January and just plum forgot about capping the rest of it, so when I was capping May, I remembered that I still had to cap Angela from Carrie. Sadly for a movie filmed mostly in Australia, there's barely any Australian actresses in it but there is Emily Berrington who had a nude scene in The White Queen.
