A look at Rapa Nui (1994)

Being sitting on this one for a while and it turned out to be bigger and more expansive look that I was expecting, so it's good to finally finish it.

Rapa Nui is a 1994 tribal story about the Rapa Nui people of Easter Island that are split into two tribes: the ruling class or Long Ears and the 'working class' or Short Ears. The movie focuses on a rupture that occurs between the two when the Short Ears see that they are being used by the Long Ears to make 'Moai' (statues) that are never up to the standard that the tribal leader Ariki-mau (Eru Potaka Dewes) wants.

Also, there's a love triangle between friends from rival tribes Noro (Jason Scott Lee) and Make (Esai Morales) who both take a liking to Ramana (Sandrine Holt) which causes issues within the Short Ears as they think Ramana is a traitor to the clan for liking and then becoming pregnant to Noro's child. Ramana is banished to a jail for becoming pregnant out of wedlock.

After the death of one of the leaders of the Short Ears when a statue comes loose from the ropes that are holding it, it's the final straw for the Short Ears who have had enough and demand more rations and a place in the physically demanding Egg Race where the winner of which gives bragging rights for that clan (Noro's clan has won it 20 years running). They are granted that demand on the condition that if their competitor loses, he will be sacrificed. Make steps up for the Short Ears and participates in the race and wins but then slips and smashes the egg he was supposed to bring back, handing victory to Noro. The Short Ears don't take too kindly to this result and when Ariki-mau leaves the island to fulfill his destiny, they decide to slaughter the Long Ears. Noro is captured but escapes and gets to Ramana and they get away on a canoe before they can be caught.

The movie focuses more on the class warfare aspect of the tribes and suffers for it as while it sets up the far better ending, the movie gets bogged down. It perks up dramatically during the Egg Race as there's quite a lot of action and extremely well done stunts. At least the movie moves away from the love triangle plot after it banishes Ramana for over half the movie. While the movie isn't all the bad, it's easy-to-see why the audience mostly ignored it.

One of the major problems with the movie is that the three 'leads' have clearly been 'browned up', the most damning being Esai Morales who doesn't look anything like anyone else in the movie. The supporting cast are all of Maori/Polynesian extraction which at least gives the movie some authenticity. I don't know why Maori/Polynesian actors weren't made the leads of the movie as none of the leads were big enough stars to get an audience and their names certainly didn't garner much of an audience.

Interestingly, this movie is produced by Kevin Costner who seems to be helping out his friend, director Kevin Reynolds who worked together on Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. They would later have a massive falling out after making Waterworld together, something that I remember was mentioned incessantly when Reynolds' next movie One Eight Seven was released. They seem to have made up as they made the 2012 mini-series Hatfields & McCoys together.

You can tell that Rapa Nui has been mostly forgotten as it's the type of movie that's ripe for a widescreen HD release but as yet seems to have not gotten one. The following videos are from the Australian DVD release of the movie and the quality isn't the greatest and it's in pan-and-scan fullscreen and a lot of shots look like they were clearly made for a widescreen picture and are framed awkwardly. Maybe one day it'll get a proper release, Costner's name alone is surely enough.

Rapa Nui (1994)

The movie goes for some level of authenticity for tribal wear in the movie so the women in the movie pretty much always have their breasts shown. But there are very few female roles in the movie. Sandrine Holt is listed as the main actress in the movie but is barely in it after the first 20 or so minutes when her character is banished to jail.

The supporting cast is all Maori/Polynesian actors although as I said above, there's barely any roles for women. New Zealand actress Rena Owen, who also made her break out movie Once Were Warriors around the same time, has the biggest role of the female supporting characters but doesn't really have much to do more than being a part of the group. She at least gets a bunch of lines unlike every other female character. Another New Zealand actress Tania Simon joins Rena in the crowd regularly but she has as little as 2-3 lines for the the entire movie. There are other women in the cast named but none have much of role and in some cases, it's hard-to-tell who's who.

Here is a detailed look at the nudity from Rena Owen and Tania Simon in Rapa Nui:

13:45 We first see Rena in the background of a crowd shot in tribal garb but don't get a good look at her until 14:10 when she is the focus of a shot and we see both of her breasts. At 14:35 we see Rena still in the centre of the shot but she now has her arms crossed over her breasts. She is joined in the shot by Tania Simon but in the fullscreen version she is half out-of-shot and we only see her left breast. At 15:00, we now see Rena still with her arms crossed over her breasts and we now see her left nipple. We also see Tania in full but we see that she is wearing a dress that covers her right breast so we only see her left breast. We see one more shot of Rena and Tania at 15:20 before the scene ends.

19:15 We see a group of women harassing Sandrine Holt's character in a river with the main antagonist being Rena while Tania is also there. We see both women's breasts throughout the brief scene which ends at 19:40 when Rena pushes Sandrine as then she trudges off where we see Rena's left breast.

24:10 Tania and others are talking to an elder who tells them that they have a reduced ration. They argue and during the argument we see Tania's left breast. Rena holds Tania back and after a bit we see Rena's breasts. 24:45 Rena is with her family as they go to the dinner area and sit in front of the fire. As she is walking to their place, we see both of Rena's breast and then just her left breast as she is sitting with her family in front of a fire.

40:00 Rena and Tania are part of a large group that charge over to make demands and we see both of Rena's breasts and Tania's left breast as she's again wearing her dress. This includes a closer look beginning at 40:40. There's a closer shot only featuring Rena and we continue to see her breasts and then again in a wider shot from a distance. 41:45 Another shot of Rena. 42:10 Back to the wider shot where we see Rena then a closer shot where we now see a fair bit of her bottom out of her loin cloth.

Between 42:30 and 43:15, we see Rena in the background of the shot and we continue to see her breasts. At 44:10, we go back to the closer shot of Rena in the group and see her breasts once more then again at 44:25. Another look at the wider shot at 44:50 with Rena and we now see Tania once again. We see Tania in a closer shot in 45:05 and again we see her left breast as the group starts celebrating. 45:20 As the group leaves, we see a shot from far away where we again see Rena's breasts. 45:50 The group has stopped as their leader is talking to someone and just before they leave, we see a shot with Rena and we once again see her breasts.

46:00 In a night scene, we see a brief shot of Rena in the background and we briefly see her left breast before she kneels behind a man. 46:35 We now see Rena standing up to look at a man running off and we again see her breasts.

47:10 Rena is helping make a statue and we briefly see her breasts. We also briefly see Tania helping Rena and see her left breast.

1:02:05 Rena joins Esai Morales although she is mostly off-screen but we do see her left breast very briefly. 1:02:25 We not get a better look at Rena next to Esai and while she is wearing a dress now, we still see both of her breasts but predominantly her left breast. 1:02:40 The pan-and-scan of the fullscreen picture centers the shot and we now see Tania Simon on the other side of Esai and we see both of her breasts and then again in two further shots. 1:03:00 The group now celebrates and both Rena and Tania pick up Esai and lift him onto their shoulders and we see Rena's left breast with her right breast covered by her dress and also both of Tania's breasts.

1:11:00 Rena and Tania are with a bunch of people watching a group of men performing in the Egg Race and when one of the men fall, we see a shot of the group watching where we see Rena's left breast and Tania's left breast as she stands up. 1:11:20 Another closer shot of Rena and Tania and we see both of their left breasts, a shot that would look better in a widescreen shot. 1:11:30 We see a shot of the tribe in the background and we again see Rena and Tania's breasts, a shot seen again at 1:12:25.

The Egg Race continues but we don't see another shot of Rena and Tania until 1:19:05 where we see a wide shot of the group and again see both women's left breast. The next shot of the group is at 1:20:40 then a closer shot at 1:20:50 before a shot where the camera pans over to the group and we again see both women's left breast. They both then run down to join the victor Esai Morales and we see both of Rena's breasts as the dress she is wearing moves around and Tania's left breast.

1:21:20 Rena joins Esai and we see both of her breasts as she celebrates. 1:22:00 Things sour when Esai falls and breaks the egg that is the goal of the Egg Race and now the group are unhappy. At first we see Rena's right breast just on screen as a man cuts himself in disappointment at what has happened then at 1:22:20 we see a quick pan past Rena and we see both of her breasts. We see one final shot at 1:23:45 as she joins everyone else who is leaving where we see both of her breasts briefly.

1:29:50 The tribe which lost the Egg Race is not happy with the result and starts to brutally attack the other families. Rena is a part of this tribe and we see her bash a person and as she does, we see her breasts. At 1:30:25, we see Rena and Tania holding Jason Scott Lee and forcing him to watch the carnage. We don't really see much here but there's a brief moment where we see the side of Tania's breast.

1:31:50 As Jason Scott Lee is being dragged out, Rena has some fairly big rocks and starts throwing them at him. We see her breasts and a fair portion of her bottom and continue to see her as she chases him when he runs away. 1:32:05 Rena stops and throws one more rock at the fleeing Jason Scott Lee and she is joined by Tania and we see both women's breasts. Rena then hears one of the statues being dismantled and she turns around and watches in joy, running over to the crowd surrounding and we continue to see her breasts. 1:32:25 We now see Rena and Tania help pull down another statue and we see both women's breasts as they celebrate the statue being toppled.

 

There's only one other actress that is recognisable in the movie, Angela Gribben, who is listed just as Long Ear Girl. She has one line which feels very random and mostly appears briefly in the background on scenes.

At 33:15 Angela can be seen in the background as the man representing her clan introduces himself. We see her breasts although they are somewhat covered by her hair. 40:50 Angela can be seen in the group shot and at 41:00 has her only line in the movie. Further shots of her in the group can be seen at 41:35 and 43:20. We see her breasts, mostly covered by her hair and from a distance.

Hopefully a widescreen HD version of the movie will get a release some day but considering we've had 15+ years of HD content and it hasn't come out yet, I won't be holding my breath for it.
