The movies of David Blyth (part 2)

Digging into the rest of his filmography in this update, starting with the 1990s where Blyth made a couple of American movies in the Red Blooded American Girl series, a family movie, some TV movies and also a few episodes of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a lot of which was shot in New Zealand over it's lifetime.

Red Blooded American Girl (1990)

While not technically a New Zealand movie, I've decided to include this movie and it's sequel in this update. This movie is written by Canadian writer/director Allan Moyle (cult teen movies Pump Up The Volume and Empire Records plus a sci-fi B-movie that I like XChange). It's a pretty simple story about a radical scientist Owen (Andrew Stevens) who is 'recruited' by a mysterious chemical company run by a persuasive doctor (Christopher Plummer) to find the final ingredient for the cure vampirism, which he doesn't find out until it's too late. He immediately falls for test subject Paula (Heather Thomas) and Owen also discovers Rebecca (Lydie Denier) who is being groomed by wacko Dennis (Kim Coates) which leads to Owen finding out what he's really there for and that Paula has been infected and he must save her before she becomes a vampire which is happening fast. Silly stuff mostly because everything happens in the space of a day, literally the first day Owen works at the joint.

There's a decent nude scene to begin the movie from Lydie Denier plus a couple of semi-nude scenes from Heather Thomas who's plays sexy but demure.

Moonrise aka My Grandpa Is a Vampire (1992)

Not really expecting much of anything to cap from this family movie about a couple of kids being forced to visit their grandpa in New Zealand who turns out the be a 'good' vampire. They have a bunch of wacky adventures while trying to keep grandpa out of the sun. While he's not actually playing Grandpa Munster, Al Lewis has no problem basically reprising the role he made famous for decades.

Just some brief bathing suit action in this movie.

The Call Up (1995)

50 minute telemovie about a bunch of New Zealand soldiers who are about to be sent as peacekeepers for the UN and they try to enjoy their last few days before leaving. Pretty typical TV stuff. Blyth also directed another telemovie called Kahu & Maia around the same time but that has nothing to cap in it.

Some fairly lengthy underwear work from Danielle Cormack in an early role for her.

Red Blooded 2 (1997)

Another Red Blooded American Girl with Blyth back directing. This movie has absolutely nothing to do with original with the entire vampire plot abandoned for a wild woman plot instead. This time Miya (Kari Wuhrer) is a travelling sex worker who comes across her abusive father (Burt Young) while looking for business. He want to continue where he left off but after almost dying, Miya runs away and into the car of straight-laced college boy Trent (Kristoffer Ryan Winters), who helps her escape. She then seduces him and they travel together with Trent going to his overprotective parents for Thanksgiving. Then Miya's father catches up with them and she kills him (by shooting him in the balls!) and then Miya becomes more violent (including shooting at police) and turns Trent into someone who she wants to rebel against his parents. The police lie in wait for them at the parent's house (with David Keith in a baffling small role). Another silly movie but Kari Wuhrer is really going for it in this movie: jumping onto trucks, teasing every man and boy she comes across including planting a big wet one on David Keith. She's definitely the only reason to watch the movie.

So, it's a bit of shame Kari only shows very modest nudity in the movie as she rubs her breasts against the college kids chest in a fairly lengthy scene.

Now we move onto the 2000s where Blyth's filmography becomes a bit more sporadic with a few documentaries thrown in. Blyth has directed 4 movies in the 2000s, three of which I've already capped.

Exposure (2001)

A made for the American market sexy thriller starring Ron Silver as a former photographer who discovers a woman (Susan Pari) who helps him rediscover his passion for photographing models. Except it also brings back memories of a woman who he lost in a foreign country (Miriama Smith) plus a serial killer has seen the racy shots of the woman and is getting revenge on all involved with Ron Silver in the firing line. Also Alexandra Paul is there as a love interest who gets no love.

Brief moments of nudity in the movie from Susan and Miriama especially in the case of Miriama who is only ever seen in brief but fairly regular flashbacks throughout the movie.

There's a HD version available of the movie but I can't be bothered/haven't had the time for capping it at the moment and the fullscreen DVD version is fairly decent and probably shows a littler more, particularly in those Miriama Smith scenes.

Wound (2010)

Oddball psychological horror about a woman (Kate O'Rourke) who is about to go through a massive trauma brought on by her search for her long lost mother and also the arrival of her own troubled long-lost daughter.

A fair bit of bondage and domination in this movie and quite a bit of nudity from Kate O'Rourke. This seemed to be on Blyth's mind at the time as he made a documentary about a dominatrix a few years earlier.

Ghost Bride (2013)

Fairly by-the-numbers supernatural cultural-clash thriller where a man of Chinese origin (Yoson An, who's been in a number of things recently most notably as the co-pilot to Gerard Butler in Plane) who is forced to chose between the local girl (Rebekah Randell nee Palmer, currently a long-term regular on Shortland Street) and his arranged bride May-Ling (Fiona Feng). Turns out his parents have asked witch Madam Yin (Geeling Ching) to intervene by anyway possible so she uses the world of the dead to pull the man and his wanted bride apart.

There's a little bit of nudity from Rebekah as she takes a shower where she shows her bottom and the side of her breast plus there's a nip slip scene.

Interesting note about New Zealand actress Geeling Ching who appears in this movie. She's is the woman in the music video for David Bowie's 'China Girl', which has a little bit of nudity at the end of that clip when she and Bowie get down in the sand. This is one of two music videos Bowie shot in Australia at the time with the other being for 'Let's Dance'.

Blyth has made one more movie called Night Freaks which has just been released and is a mockumentary about two people who talk about their alien abductions and it includes musical interludes and a fair bit of hand-drawn animation. It's very much has the feel of something made during the pandemic lockdown. Nothing to cap in the movie.

The movies of David Blyth (part 1)

I was tipped off about New Zealand avant garde/genre director David Blyth recently uploading pretty much his entire back catalog of movies/TV and short films to Vimeo, most of them in HD too. I've capped pretty much all of his post-2000 stuff but the only movie of his from before 2000 that I've capped is the cult horror movie Death Warmed Up. So there's a bit to get through including some American movies he made in the 90s over the coming weeks.

Circadian Rhythms (1976)

13 minute short film which, well I've got no idea what's going on in this short. Lots of incredibly random shit happens like the scene below where a bunch of unknown naked people dance to 'circadian rhythms'. The lead actor (Derek Ward) goes through various experiences including at one stage snapping off his penis from his body.

Angel Mine (1978)

Blyth's first feature film is a 66 minute avant garde 'satire' about a couple (Derek Ward and Jennifer Redford) who are tired of having to keep up appearances with everyone else. That's OK, there's a couple of lookalike assassins who are chasing them, looking to kill them and take over their lives. In between we get a few ad parodies including some from a Grim Reaper obviously modelled from The Seventh Seal. Scenes either go on forever or are played for maximum wackiness. At least I understood what was going on in this movie more than I did in Circadian Rhythms.

There's a few nude scenes from Jennifer Redford (in her one and only movie) including a long one to open the movie and another to end the movie. There's also what looks to be a real sex scene which is intercut within another scene in short bursts. You don't really see Jennifer in the scene but considering there's very few actors in the movie, it's doubtless her. At least I know why this movie is rated R now.

A Woman of Good Character (1980)

Blyth's first project for television as director is a 50 minute drama about an Englishwoman Lizzie (Sarah Peirse on debut) who comes to New Zealand to take up a position as domestic help for a New Zealand farming family. On arrival, her keeper promptly kills her dog and it becomes quickly becomes a harsh way to live. But she finds some solace with outcast son (Bruno Lawrence, as always the most interesting in any production) but things are grim with his brother raping Lizzie before the family starts dropping like flies as living on the land becomes hard.

There's some brief nudity from Sarah where she shows her breasts as she's washing at the stream before being joined by the outcast son. As far as I know, Sarah's only other nudity is in Rain where she showed her bottom. Sarah still works regularly, mostly on Australian and New Zealand television.

Apparently this drama was extended to feature length (75 minutes) in 1983 and re-titled It's Lizzie to Those Close but Blyth has not uploaded that version suggesting the 50 minute version might be the definitive version of the drama.

Death Warmed Up (1984)

I capped this movie back in April 2019 after it's Bluray release from Umbrella Films which is the definitive version of the movie. You can read my review of this crazy horror movie from the following link. The only nudity in the movie comes from Norelle Scott when she attempts to have sex with her boyfriend.

Blyth was then made director of the third House movie The Horror Show (1989) but was fired after a week, so there's not much point putting it here. Only nudity I remember from that movie is some body double stuff featuring Dedee Pfeiffer.

Various Australian television series

Today I'm going through a bunch of TV series/mini-series from over the years that I haven't gotten around to capping just yet. There's a few known actresses below including yet another brief bit of nudity from Nicole Kidman. Surely I'm running out of things to cap with her in it by now.

1915 (1982)

This 1982 mini-series is about two brothers who go off to war while the women are left behind to pick up the pieces. Not a lot to cap from this show and there's only a very brief bit of nudity from Arna-Maria Winchester, barely more than a frame. Arna-Maria has a done a fair bit of nudity including from movies Alvin Rides Again and The Chain Reaction, telemovie Man of Letters and in a couple of episodes of the early 70s series Spyforce.

Bangkok Hilton (1989)

Kennedy Miller (yes Mad Max's George Miller) 3 part mini-series, who were the masters of ambitious and sprawling mini-series throughout the 80s deliver yet another good one, this time picking up from one of the themes of the time, Australians getting caught with drugs in Thailand. While there was already a mini-series the previous year based on the real life incident of Barlow and Chambers called Dadah is Dead, Bangkok Hilton is a fictionalised account of a young woman (Nicole Kidman) being sent to jail for being found with drugs in her luggage that were put there by a handsome suitor. The mini-series also stars Hugo Weaving, who was one of the leads of Dadah is Dead (Weaving would go on to be the lead of another Asian drug drama, 1996's The Bite) and English actor Denholm Elliott. Quite harrowing at times for what Kidman's character goes through before making a daring last minute escape. For a mini-series that's 4 and a half hours long, it seriously rushes in the last 20 minutes by having a whole heap of plot to get some highly unlikely closure.

Kidman, who was already a star from her turn in the previous Kennedy Miller mini-series Vietnam does a great job carrying the whole mini-series. She has a brief nude scene while getting out of the shower in part 1 while veritable unknown Vanessa Walton has a brief nude scene in the final minutes of part 3 playing a Kidman doppelganger to entrap the handsome suitor. Also below is an underwear scene featuring Grace Parr who has a rather nasty nude rape scene in the mini-series Vietnam. She was Australian Playmate of the Year in 1984 and there's pics from that if you know where to look.

Never Tell Me Never (1998)

1998 based on a true story telemovie about Janice Shephard, a marathon skier who was knocked off her bike and makes a miraculous comeback to being able to walk once again despite being told she wouldn't. She would also learn to fly a plane while recovering, so she was pretty determined. Claudia Karvan plays her in this Channel 10 telemovie, back when they made some good ones and this one is fairly good. There's some brief nudity from Claudia as she cries in the shower about her predicament.

On The Beach (2000)

Another mini-series, this one based on the 1959 American movie, both of which were filmed in Melbourne and famously the original movie's star Ava Gardner was quoted as saying that was a great place to film a movie about the end of the world. In this remake, Rachel Ward stars with her husband Bryan Brown and Armand Assante. Now Rachel wasn't born in Australia of course but I've claimed previously that she's lived her for over 30 years, that makes her pretty Australian. She has a couple of brief side-boob scenes, nothing much but this has been sitting around a while so I might as well finally complete it.

The Silence (2006)

Finally, the 2006 ABC 2-part oddball mystery mini-series directed by Cate Shortland (Black Widow, Berlin Syndrome, Little Fish) starring Richard Roxburgh as a gunshy former detective who is tasked with curating an exhibition of police crime scene photos. Along the way he becomes obsessed with one victim to the point that he tries to find her killer 50+ years after it happened. The only nudity in the mini-series comes from crime scene photos featuring Ellouise Rothwell, who didn't have a long career but does have a couple of nude scenes in the 2001 mini-series My Brother Jack. Alice McConnell is also featured below, no nudity here but do have a couple of nude scenes in the 2012 movie Being Venice and almost does in the 50 minute 2005 telemovie Jewboy.
