A bunch of 1980s New Zealand movies
Was going to do a post about all of the nudity in New Zealand movies from the 1970s and 1980s but as always, I bit off more than I can chew. It turns out that there's quite a bit I haven't seen or is hard-to-find. So I've decided to go with the smaller option of capping a few movies I hadn't gotten around to yet and can actually find. Not that there's was a whole lot of movies made in New Zealand during this period as the movie industry only began in 1977.
Goodbye Pork Pie (1980)
A New Zealand favourite, a classic anarchic action comedy about Gerry (Kelly Johnson), a no-hoper who comes across a lady's purse and decides to use it's contents to hire a yellow Mini Minor to fuck around in. Meanwhile, John (Tony Barry) has had his last chance from his wife Sue (Shirley Gruar) and she's off to join her sister in Invercargill at the bottom of New Zealand's South Island. John has no money and spots Gerry mucking around with a parking officer and decides this is his chance to get down to her. Gerry is up for a lark so off they go, picking up hitchhiker Shirl (Claire Oberman) along the way. Then the police go after them, mainly because they're speeding and Gerry did illegally use a woman's license and money to get the car. Now it's a high speed chase all the way with Gerry and John, who lose Shirl along the way, using every trick in the book to escape the police including hiding in trains while the country becomes fascinated with the chase. Director Geoff Murphy's (Utu, The Quiet Earth, Young Guns II, Under Siege 2: Dark Territory, Fortress 2: Re-Entry, Freejack) first feature length movie, this movie is so much fun, I can't believe I hadn't seen it until now. The ending is spectacularly good with the car basically just wheels by the time it gets to it's destination. Some good laughs and a lot of great action and speeding cars along the way with a similar vibe to The Blues Brothers (without the music) which came out in the same year.
There is a 2017 remake of this movie, Pork Pie, starring Dean O'Gorman, James Rolleston and Australian actress Ashleigh Cummings and directed by Geoff Murphy's son. I've seen it and there's nothing to cap in it and that's about all I remember about it, so it didn't really leave much of an impression unlike the original has.
There's a couple of nude scenes in the movie. Claire Oberman shows her breasts about 45 minutes into the movie after having sex on a train. Claire moved to Britain not long after and did a bit of acting there and seems to have done further nude scenes I will look into for a future updates. Also late in the movie at the 90 minute mark, Shirley Gruar very briefly shows her breasts in a quick sex scene that would be easy to miss in a non-HD version of the movie but you can see it a little clearer in the HD version. There's also another scene in the movie where we see Frances Edmond in a bra as her character tries to have fantasy sex with her traffic cop husband until the speeding Mini Minor passes before he can finish. Frances has done nudity in the movie and TV version of Topless Women Talk About Their Lives, where she's seen ironing without a shirt.

The Lost Tribe (1983)
Weird thriller where an obsessed anthropologist Edward Scarry (John Bach) who goes missing, so his wife Ruth (Darien Takle) calls his twin brother Max (also John Bach) to help look for him on a remote island that it known for where a 'lost tribe' was found to be living. At the same time, a dead sex worker is found and Max is pointed out to be the suspect which the police are having trouble trying to pin on him. Well it looks like Edward has been killed, possibly by the 'lost tribe' but his body hasn't been found and no-one is willing to look for him. So Max and Ruth go to the remote island leaving her daughter with the local police officer but she seems to have psychic powers and can see what is happening. Max won't leave until he finds his brother but Ruth gets scared and after having sex with brother-in-law, she decides to leave the island and Max goes out on his own and what he finds shocks him. The movie gets good purchase from the twin brother trope and hammers it into the ground. You know something shady is up with both twins but what it is turns out to be strangely more conventional than it was made out to be. Interesting but the film's idea of a 'lost tribe' turns out to be a bit of misnomer which is a shame.
There's a bit of nudity from Darien Takle (in her first movie) over a 10 minute period of the movie starting about 50 minutes in. First, she is stripped naked and we see her breasts and briefly her bottom as she continues and has fairly boisterous sex with Max. She covers up with a blanket after Max leaves to see what's making a noise nearby and then Darien is stripped of the blanket and we briefly see her left breast as she cowers and grabs a gun, ready to shoot who comes through the door. We then see both of her breasts after the gun is wrested from her by Max after she nearly shoots him. The scene on the DVD version is very dark as it's lit by candlelight which is a pain. There's a HD version of the movie at NZ OnDemand but it's not available to Australians and I haven't been able to access any movie I can't via VPN. That should be a better version.
Darien did another nude scene 25 years later in the movie 2008 social drama A Song of Good, although it's a rape scene. She's still acting as I saw her in a few episodes of Shortland Street very recently.

Should I Be Good? (1985)
This 1985 thriller says to be based on 'true events' and continues on from the Mr. Asia drug trade story that was covered in two separate Underbelly series including A Tale of Two Cities which has a lot of nudity particularly from New Zealand actress Anna Hutchison. This movie follows on after the murder of kingpin Marty Johnstone who was supposedly killed by Nat Goodman (Harry Lyon) but the police couldn't pin it on him so they get him on drug charges instead. Now out of prison, Nat goes back to his friends who are surprisingly happy to see him. He tries to get his singing career back up and running but he also does a drug deal to help out his ex-girlfriend Anne-Marie (Spring Rees) who's now a drug addicted sex worker. He uses the money to pay off the brothel owner and get her out of sex work and off the drugs, which she does by going to Bangkok via Hong Kong. Nat also hooks up with friend Vicki Strassbourg (Joanne Mildenhall), who's a current affairs host as is very interested in a story of corruption which seems to tangently involve Nat. The movie takes a while to get going and then it becomes very plot heavy in the last half-hour as a number of things fall into place and someone is killed. Not sure about the 'true' nature of the story as it gets very far-fetched by the end but the movie is never boring as a lot goes on including quite a lot of music with a few local singers in the main cast with Harry Lyon from Hello Sailor who sang the song 'Gutter Black' which was used for the theme of the great New Zealand TV show Outrageous Fortune. Also features one of the singers from Beaver who feature prominently in the 1978 movie Skin Deep.
A fair bit of nudity in this movie. Joanne Mildenhall shows her breasts briefly and possibly full frontal nudity as she adjusts her towel after getting out of the shower to answer the phone and then her bottom as she takes off the towel and puts on a robe. A little while later we see her breasts as she lays in bed after having sex with Nat. There's also a scene late in the movie where we may be able to see her left breast but the size and quality of the video make it hard-to-see if we can. Spring Rees also has a nude scene where she takes off her dress and we see her breasts and bottom before she enters a spa and we then see her breasts as she sits in the spa waiting for Nat to join her. A couple of scenes later we see her sitting with Nat and we see her breasts throughout the fairly lengthy scene.
I got this movie off the NZ OnScreen site (which is available free to watch) and it's not high quality but it's of watchable quality and about the best we can get it currently as there's no DVD or HD version of the movie. Not sure we are getting any better with this pretty much a forgotten movie.

Zilch! (1989)
Another political thriller, this time more comedic in tone as Sam (Michael Mizrahi), a man who has his fingers in many pies, overhears a conversation at his job at the telephone exchange about a secret tape that could be used to blackmail a politician who is deciding who is getting the tender to build the second cross harbour tunnel. The man who made the call is arrested before he can say what he has and where it is but Sam goes looking it and when he can't find the tape, he digs deeper and finds that it involves a shonky businessman (Roy Billing). Also a waitress at another of his jobs, Anna (Lucy Sheehan) is embroiled inadvertedly in the intrigue thanks to her job moonlighting as a dominatrix. Sam, along with his buddy Curtis (John Watson) dig deeper with Sam going above and beyond to find out what's going on, getting himself into more trouble by the minute and dragging his friends with him. Not a bad little movie, Sam gets himself so deep into the intrigue that I didn't stop to ask why he was bothering at all as he doesn't seem to be getting anything out of it. There's some pretty decent foot chase scenes including one that ends in a shark tank. It's all a bit silly particularly for what's at stake but it's good, cheeky fun that you don't usually get in a political thriller.
Just one nude scene in the movie from Louise Graham who shows her breasts after sex with Sam is aborted because he thinks she's more interested in her music than him. There's also a brief sex scene featuring Lucy Sheehan but you don't see much. The dominatrix scenes featuring Lucy are also fairly weird and involve her throwing tomatoes at a bloke. Again, I got the movie from NZ OnScreen, which is also free to watch and just like Should I Be Good? is about as good as quality as we will probably see.

That'll do for now. I've watched a bunch of other 80s New Zealand movies like Came a Hot Friday and Queen City Rocker which have nothing to cap. Most of what I have left are near impossible to find stuff or New Zealand co-prodctions like Second Time Lucky which has nudity from American actress Diane Franklin or Hot Target which has nudity from American actress Simone Griffeth. There's also Mesmerised starring Jodie Foster and John Lithgow but there doesn't seem to be any nudity in that. Plus the 1983 British-made co-production Trespasses aka: Omen of Evil where British actress Emma Piper has some nudity. I have a VHS rip of that movie, so I'll cap it one of these days but none of these movies have any nudity from New Zealand (or Australian) actresses.
