Update for 22 February...

90s update continues and with another François Ozon movie, the 50 minute 1997 movie Regarde Le Mer (See The Sea, I think the English title works better here) where early Ozon favourite Marina de Van invades the life of lonely English woman Sasha Hails. Was an early 2000s favourite on SBS and I probably saw it every time it aired (because of course I did) but I hadn't seen it since until it randomly turned up in the first week of SBS World Movies a couple of years ago. I recorded it and have just now gotten around to capping it. I think its only aired once since and at an hour with ads, it's probably a time filler. It's in HD but the quality is not so good and clearly upscaled, probably the same copy they ran 20-odd years ago with no HD. But it's fine although I had a minor issue which I was able to minimise.

The other movie is also French, the 1994 psychological thriller L'Enfer from noted suspense director Claude Chabrol and about the only Emmanuelle Béart French movie from the late 80s, early 90s that I hadn't seen. The plot is basically François Cluzet gets married to Emmanuelle Béart and after 6 years it's mostly fine but then Cluzet starts to suspect that Béart is cheating on him during her trips to town. It begins to consume him so much so he starts stalking her, controlling her and then just questioning every move she makes. Cluzet's obsession is so intense it's hard-to-watch to the point where you just want to grab him and shake him until he stops this nonsense. The film is mostly fine until the terrible ending where Chabrol goes with the 'what is real' ending and leaves everything open-ended when there's absolutely no need to, which is a shame. Some very brief nudity from Emmanuelle, as in about 10 frames worth but there's also one scene where she wears a see-through dress which comes out of nowhere.

There's also this suggestive shot in the movie which I'm struggling to understand, all I know is that it's suggestive of something...

Update for 19 February...

Haven't capped a New Zealand movie in the Saturday Australian/New Zealand update this year, so here's a couple I've watched recently.

Once Were Warriors was on SBS World Movies recently and I remembered that I hadn't capped the movie and hadn't watched it in a while but after watching it, I'm don't think I have ever watched it as I didn't remember any of it. Incredibly incendiary movie still with three great performances notably by Temuera Morrison and Rena Owen who went onto bigger international careers and less notably by Mamaengaroa Kerr-Bell, who plays the eldest daughter and the heart of the family which breaks horribly when she kills herself. Trying to think of a similar movie made with such fire in Australia and off the top of my head I could only come up with Romper Stomper and even then that movie turns into a love triangle in the second half which nobody ever remembers. I also decided to watch the sequel, What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted? which I recapped about a year ago but didn't rewatch until now. Nowhere near the fire of the original, Rena Owen is relegated to basically 'guest star' and a son is invented, never seen or mentioned in the first movie and it's about him getting revenge for his brother's death (boring!) and Jake trying to redeem himself (more interesting). It's OK just not essential.

Skin Deep is a 1978 drama set in the fictional small town of Carlton where the member of a men's only-gym decide that their boxing team need an edge over other local teams so they decide to hire a masseuse to give the boxers a proper rubdown before and after their fights. Enter city girl Sandra Ray (Deryn Cooper), as the new masseuse and all the men in town slowly but surely lose their shit. At first, Sandra just give massages to the boxing team but she is then convinced by town elder and regular customer Bob (Ken Blackburn) to give something more like you can get in the city so she starts giving select people a topless massage. Some locals cause a bit of destruction after being rejected from getting one. The local accountant Phil's (Grant Tilly) wife (and other townswomen) is highly suspicious of him and of what Sandra does although Phil is mostly disinterested in her until an unscheduled dance at a fundraiser. Phil then falls head over heals for Sandra but she rejects him. The local policeman (Kevin J. Wilson) becomes suspicious of what's going on in the 'health' massage parlour. Then Bob convinces Sandra to give him something extra and...

Interesting look at a small New Zealand town changing irrevocably when a tough city woman shows up and completely messes up their dynamics. A surprising amount of the movie is about the little things that drive the small town like sporting and fundraising events and these scenes seem to linger for quite a lot of time almost like the editor fell asleep. Bob just casually egging Sandra on to eventually give him a rub and tug over about an hour of the movie which ends exactly as you expect. Grant Tilly playing another hen-pecked husband who gets ruined by a dalliance with another woman (as he did in Middle Age Spread) . The men in town acting like they've never met a woman before; it's quite strange. The movie probably works better as a time piece and there is plenty of interest but it does take it's sweet time getting to it, clocking in at 105 minutes, which doesn't seem long but it feels a lot longer.

Got a tip about Skin Deep being on YouTube (you'll have to watch it there as it's age restricted) and it was in HD but looking at it, it is very much upscaled so I reduced the size of the videos to make it look more its actual size. It's a fairly decent copy, possibly HD rip or high quality VHS and about the only way to see it now as apparently it's never made the leap from VHS. There's a chance it may turn up at somewhere like New Zealand On Demand sometime in the future (I'm surprised it's not as it was the first film funded by the NZ government), so who knows.

Update for 15 February...

Another 90s update. Wasn't expecting anything from Kimberly as it is a pretty mild movie, one of those late 90s, early 2000s movies where a bunch of guys all go after the one girl (Gabrielle Anwar keeping her British accent in this case). But there's somehow a brief nude scene for no reason whatsoever, so it's better than nothing. Psycho Cop Returns promises hot naked babes and violent B-grade horror and delivers on both. It's pretty silly and the plot, guys having a buck's party at work (!) and an amorous couple spending all day being horny with one another around the office and then staying after work for some more is well... a story I s'pose, not a well thought out one but there's hot naked babes and people die horribly, so who cares. Also, what other B-movie can boast a double Oscar winner in the cast in Nick Vallelonga, who gets shoved down an empty elevator shaft for his trouble.

Update for 14 February...

90s update time with two European movies about artists.

I haven't seen French actress Romane Bohringer much recently but man I saw her a lot through the 90s thanks to SBS showing a whole bunch of movies. Movies like Les Nuits Fauves (Savage Nights), Mina Tannenbaum, La Femme de Chambre du Titanic (The Chambermaid on the Titanic) and one of my favourites L'Appartement got regular rotation plus there was Total Eclipse with Leonardo DiCaprio and then she starred in an Australian movie, He Died With A Felafel In His Hand and that was just the peak for me. Barely remember seeing her in anything since which is a damn shame. Came across Vigo, an English language biopic about early French filmmaker Jean Vigo, whose one and only feature lengthy movie is arthouse lovers favourite L'Atalante. Hopefully I'll cap a whole bunch more of her movies in future 90s updates or whenever.

Update for 12 February...

The Saturday update picks out an 80s sex comedy.

Coming Of Age is a 1984 sex comedy where confused nun Angel (Angela Menzies-Wills) falls for sexually-explicit rock star Rexx Rated (David Evans) and they get married. Rexx loves her so much that gives up making raunchy music for her and reinvents himself as a religious act which pisses off his manager Deaky (Mark Neal). But this is not enough as they are not clicking in bed not helped by her inexperience. Angel sees the signs everywhere of her burgeoning sexuality including with Rexx's dancer Miss Delicious (Deanna Somers) and numerous people she meets on a day out around Melbourne. They include a terrible taxi driver (David Argue), a man who is following her suspiciously (Vernon Wells), a salesman (Steven Tandy) at a clothes shop and a perverted ice cream man from her past (Robert Forza). It is then suggested to her that she should visit a notorious sex therapist Madame Yoni (Margot Randal) who may unlock the key to her problems with Rexx. She is then invited to visit a mysterious man for a night she'll never forget.

Absolutely rubbish sex comedy that is influenced by 70s British sex comedies but it is completely unfunny but worse, most of the sexy stuff is boring and labourious. The movie begins with a reasonable idea but once the sex starts it becomes tiring and repetitive. Then the comedy starts and the movie becomes irredeemable. David Argue starts his exhausting act and it devolves from there to being total unfunny. Then there's the bizarre sound effects done for comedic effect that are grotesque and don't fit the movie at all. Angela Menzies-Wills gets an upgrade to the lead role after years of playing small sexpot roles and while she perfectly fine as a sexpot, she's not much of an actress and struggles particularly during the comedy bits. There's also a whole lot of narration from Angela when things aren't boring enough. Evans, who's probably best known as the AC/DC frontman before Bon Scott, doesn't have much to do and disappears for a whole lot of the movie which isn't a bad thing as he's also not much of an actor but he does a lot better in the stage scenes/music videos. The music is actually the best part of the movie with some catchy songs throughout including the title song. It's a shame that the movie doesn't focus much more on this aspect. Coming Of Age is a poor movie with an uninteresting story but worse than all, boring sexy stuff, a crime for a sex comedy.

I think that this is Angela Menzies-Wills's only lead role but I have capped her in some of her other sexpot roles such as Felicity and Nightmares. I should get around to her other movies over time. Most of the other sexpots in the movie are one and dones except for Margaret Dupre (Centrespread), who I came across in a very recent post where her daughter made a short film called Stripped about an incident in their life. She was played by, of all actresses, Katheryn Winnick.

I capped this from a VHS rip and it's actually one of the better rips I've come across although I did have an issue with the first five minutes that I managed to get around for the one video it coincided with. Thankfully, as there's over 35 minutes of videos below. I was going to do collages but I just couldn't be bothered but I might do a few over time. Doubtful something better will come along as this movie is long forgotten and of no interest to pretty much anyone but at least there's some decent quality VHS videos below.

Update for 11 February...

A bunch of odds and bods featuring Spanish actresses that I've had lying around for the while, so it's time to finally cap them. Update for 6 February...

I usually try to put some sort of theme for the weekend Australian/New Zealand update. Usually it's just movies from the same decade but last week's was two 90s movies made in Papua New Guinea. Today's is Australian movies starring New Zealand actress Kerry Fox. Some quick synopses:

The Last Days Of Chez Nous is a 1992 comedy drama where a family is about to go through an upheaval. Vicki (Kerry Fox) comes back from overseas and moves in with her much older sister Beth (Lisa Harrow), her French husband J.P. (Bruno Ganz) and Beth's daughter Annie (Miranda Otto). Things are fine at first and the household even takes in a boarder Tim (Kiri Paramore). Then Vicki finds out she's pregnant and after a long deliberation she decides to have an abortion while Beth helps her. Beth decides to go on holiday with her father (Bill Hunter) to Uluru so that they can better connect with one another. J.P. is not loving Australia, particularly the hot weather and when Beth goes away, he starts to see Vicki in a different light. Annie and Tim become an item and after one hot night, so do J.P. and Vicki and they begin an affair. Beth arrives back from her holiday and the tension in the household grows. Alright slice-of-life movie that has this vibe of love and happiness and the household has this strange open door policy where there's a quite a bit of interaction with outside the house. Also the age difference between Vicki and Beth is off-putting to the point that I had to keep telling myself they were sisters and not mother-daughter. But the movie is quite fun and there isn't a huge deal made about the affair even if it ends in a major change. Also interesting that the three leads are all overseas actors playing a family in Sydney.

The Sound Of One Hand Clapping is a 1998 drama where Sonja (Kerry Fox) arrives back in Tasmania after running away from her abusive father Bojan (Kristof Kaczmarek), newly pregnant and looking to make sense of her past. She finds her father a broken alcoholic. Sonja settles in with old family friend Jenja (Evelyn Krape) and begins a job at a pub. Sonja also remembers her childhood and particularly her mother (Melita Jurisic) who abandoned her at age 3 and growing up with her father barely scraping by thanks to her father's alcoholism. Long forgotten adaptation of a popular novel at the time and it's not hard to see why it's forgotten. The movie is mostly boring and uninteresting apart from it being a rare movie made in Tasmania.

Downriver is a 2015 depressing drama where teenage boy James (Reef Ireland) is released from juvenile detention after spending 3 years inside for drowning a young boy. He plays with fire immediately by returning to the cabin at the caravan park where he used to live which is inside the area his restraining order is set. He makes friends with a neighbour, drags his mother (Kerry Fox) away from her new boyfriend (Robert Taylor) and is taunted by possible co-conspirator Anthony (Thom Green), who may be more than co-conspirator. James is back for one reason: to find the body of the boy he apparently drowned as the police never found him. He tries to piece together what could've happened with the body while Anthony weaves a web that will set off a series of events that will either put James back in jail or get him the redemption he seeks. A dark, depressing but riveting drama about a boy trying to make amends while coming to terms with what happened on that fateful day. Relentlessly grim and gets grimmer as the mystery unravels, we find James isn't perfect but he at least tries to be better. Anthony is a psychopath who habitually lies but his lies catch up with him and result in a horrible scenario for the innocent neighbour. And Anthony's family aren't exactly innocent either. Tough to watch but a well made movie.
