Update for 30 November...

Well, I had a crazy idea where I'd cap a bunch of Spanish movies from the 90s and 00s and it started small, but as usual, it got out of hand. Now I have a whole bunch of Spanish movies piling up and haven't started making a dent into the pile. So here is the first update with a couple of movies from the 00s. I'm pretty sure I've seen Volando Voy before on SBS because I distinctly the nude scene and I doubt I saw it isolated anywhere else. I've only ever seen collages of Elena Anaya from Rencor and it turns out she isn't even the lead in the movie. Mar Regueras also turns up in Rencor, but there's nothing to cap from her in the movie.

The next update will be redux series from Spanish updates I did in the pre-johnnymoronic.com era. Yep, I've been doing them since 2002 and I've got a few series to do that I thought I would never do again.

Update for 27 November...

Had one more new Spanish movie that I hadn't gotten around to capping, mainly because it ended up being a fairly big update.

Vampyres is a Spanish remake (but in English language) of the 1974 British erotic vampire movie where a couple of female vampires Fran (Marta Flich) and her lover Miriam (Almudena León) take in travellers and have their way with them, then kill them in blood orgies. New arrival in town Ted (Christian Stamm) becomes Fran's new play thing and prisoner in the underground dungeon, while a group of backpackers including Harriet (Verónica Bacorn) set up camp and will come under the spell of the vampire lovers. But not all will die... Practically nothing to the plot, basically someone arrives in town, they meet the vampire lovers and then the blood orgy and onto the next one. So, if you're looking for something meaty, well this ain't it, but if you're looking for lots of lesbians sex and nudity and vampire violence, well, Vampyres delivers. Otherwise, it's a pretty forgettable movie...

Update for 23 November...

Another couple of small Spanish movies today, one featuring Ana de Armas, who seems to be popping up all over the place at the moment, even in War Dogs as Miles Teller's wife/girlfriend. Not sure what's going on in Anabel, something about two girls who get an older male roommate and things start getting weird. It's from the director of El Callejón (Blind Alley) which also starred Ana. Sonata Para Violonchelo is a drama about a professional cellist that is diagnosed with fibromylagia and how she deals with it.

Don't think I have any more new movies, but I have a few Spanish reduxes, particularly from the pre-johnnymoronic.com era (that are not available on the site) to do.

Update for 21 November...

Some more quick updates from newish Spanish movies, La Voz Dormida is a movie about one sister attempting to get her sister and soon-to-be born baby away from the firing squad during the Spanish Civil War. Pretty good movie and pretty brutal at times. Didn't watch Fantasma but it looks suitably bonkers, something about a woman who loves her husband but has her world rocked when she discovers him doing something despicable while filming a reality TV show (that could be anything on reality TV as far as I'm concerned). Then it turns into a David Lynch-like movie by the looks of it, wish I could watch it properly to figure out what is going on.

Update for 15 November...

Today's Spanish movie is Benidorm Mon Amour, a 60s set slapstick comedy where a group of men go to Benidorm to have fun and pick up chicks. Well, the picking up chicks works out alright when they meet a group of young French women also on holidays. Then they get caught up with a bunch of hapless counterfeiters with a big bag of fake cash, so chaos ensues. Very basic movie, not really funny, probably best seen as something light. Has some good nudity in the movie though, especially from Anaïs Duperrein, who has some lengthy nudity. A damn shame the gorgeous Nazare Aracil doesn't get naked, although there is one moment she is talked out of stripping. I will say that a quick search will come up with an amazing nude photo shoot if you're interested. Only if you're interested...

Update for 11 November...

Another new Spanish movie.

Ma Ma is a drama about Magda (Penélope Cruz) who has just been diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer by her doctor Julián (Asier Etxeandia), meaning she will need a mastectomy. One the same day watching her son playing football, she meets scout Arturo (Luis Tosar), who says that her son may be recruited to his club, but then he receives a call from the hospital saying that his daughter and wife have been in a car accident and his daughter has died and his wife is fighting for her life. Magda accompanies Julián to the hospital and comforts him, but Arturo's wife dies. Magda gets a mastectomy and Arturo and Magda get together but then she gets the bad news that the cancer has come back and this time she's terminal. But, then Magda becomes pregnant, but it's touch and go as to whether she will live long enough to give birth, but Magda with the love of Arturo, her son and the rather attentive doctor is determined to leave with one last gift. Fairly decent teary drama from Spanish auteur Julio Medem (Habitación en Roma, Caótica Ana, Sex and Lucia) that is decidedly upbeat considering the amount of disaster that happens in the movie. Worth a look if you are into Spanish melodramas.

I was looking to see if I had capped everything from Ma Ma and come across another version which had some extra scenes I was absolutely sure wasn't in the Bluray version I watched. Looks like there's an earlier version of the movie that was only available in Russia, so the video from this cut I have below has some Russian dubbing in it. The official release is without these scenes, so I don't think it's a matter of cut/uncut versions. Also suggesting this is the case is that there is no HD version of the cut. The scenes that are added in this cut better explain the doctor's relationship to Magda and make it slightly less bizarre how attentive he is in the movie.

Update for 9 November...

Haven't done a Spanish update for a while and today begins with a couple of movies that are 50/50 in Spanish and English, Hands Of Stone and Gernika, featuring a couple of faves. Hands of Stone is a biopic about champion Panamian boxer Roberto Duran with a focus on his fights with 'Sugar' Ray Leonard, not bad if you are into boxing movies. Gernika is a drama set in the Spanish Civil War in 1937 where a bunch of journalists attempt to get out news about the war, but are blocked by censors in the Communist Party. Then one of the censors (María Valverde) falls for one of the journalists and it ends in tragedy on the day the Germans bomb the town of Gernika as a show of strength.

There will be a few more series from Spanish movies in the next few days. I also plan some further updates from older Spanish movies of the 90s/early 2000s, some of which are redos and some are newly capped.

Update for 7 November...

Something from newly released movies. That still does happen apparently...

Trash Fire is a dark comedy cum horror movie where Owen and Isabel (Adrian Grenier and Angela Trimbur) have been in a relationship for 2 years but clearly hate each other with venom. This is also how they love each other as Isabel puts up with sarcasm, alcohol issues and bulimia, yet still keeps letting him back in. After another night of sarcastic barbs and Owen's epileptic fits, Owen decides to get off the alcohol and also reconnect with his only remaining family. His mother and father died in a fire apparently caused by something Owen did and he has not seen his grandma (Fionnula Flanagan) or heavily burned sister Pearl (AnnaLynne McCord) since. When they get there, his grandma is still the same terrible woman she was, highly religious and instantly hates Isabel. Owen tries to work up the courage to talk to Pearl and she has already set her sights on Isabel for her own reasons. Well, grandma is batshit crazy and believes it's God's will that she murder Owen and Isabel and sets about doing so. Pearl may just be their unlikely saviour or even worse. I kind of like this movie, but it just falls short of being a really great movie. I think it works better as a dark comedy and Grenier and Trimbur work well together as a couple who love each other through their intense loathing of one another. The first half of the movie has quite a few laughs, but when it settles on being a horror movie, it's not quite of successful and the heavy reliance on religion is evil is overdone. But, as I said, I quite liked Trash Fire, if only it stayed as a dark comedy.

Blood In The Water is a thriller where young couple Percy and Veronica (Alex Russell and Willa Holland) and bruised and beaten and have killed a man and are being questioned. Three days earlier, Percy and Veronica are housesitting in Los Angeles when Veronica receives a call from an old boyfriend and friend of Percy's, Freedgood (Miguel Gomez), who wants to catch up. Turns out Freedgood is a drug dealer and is in town for a big deal and wants Percy to help him out, being a chemical engineer and all. After being rejected for a job he thought he was going to get, he takes up Freedgood's offer. Veronica puts an idea to Percy that they steal Freedgood's money and Percy reluctantly goes along with the idea and tags along with Freedgood who is being followed by a crooked cop Hector (David S. Lee), who is beginning to be the bane of Freedgood's existence. When the deal goes down, things come to a head and Percy and Veronica must fight to survive. OK thriller, nothing special and nothing you haven't seen numerous times before.

I capped Fear, Inc. a week or two back for Caitlin Stasey and this is up on the Australian/NZ actresses overseas part of the site. But, I forgot that I also had another video of Stephanie Darke from that movie because it was supposed to be a part of an update I ended up abandoning. So finally I've released that video below.

Update for 1 November...

A couple of newly released Australian movies today.

This Little Piggy is a drama about best friends Simon (Samuel Clark Duncan), a drug dealer who is stepping up in the world and his best friend Ely (Michael Gosden), an office drone who hates his job. Simon starts selling cocaine and thanks to his friend and customer David (Daniel Last), he is able to get a steady customer base, which he exploits by reducing the potency of the cocaine to make more money. David has his own problems as he is separated from his ex and barely see his daughter or pays support for her. At a killer party, Simon meets Tessa (Tamara Natt) and it's instant love, for Simon anyway, and a relationship blooms. Simon's success lets him to sample his own supply more and more and he becomes more irrational, which spills over when Tessa doesn't return his love as he was expecting. Now with a steady cash flow, David gets back with his ex and things are looking up for him until his customers work out they are being shortchanged and bash him up. Tessa and Ely begin to have feeling for one another and things boil over causing a huge blow-up that will end with the death of someone. OK drama that tells the oft-told tale of a man who enjoys his new found riches and doesn't see the obvious happening around him until it's too late. While it never reaches any great heights, it's a pretty good watch.

Crushed is a thriller where Ellia (Sarah Bishop) has moved away from her family's winery and is in Melbourne attempting to open a wine bar in between drinking lots of wine and having copious anonymous flings. But when she attempts to get in touch with her father about helping her with the wine bar, her mother (Roxane Wilson) tells her the news that he died in an accident at the winery. Ellia comes back to the winery, mostly to indifference from everyone including her uncle David (Les Hill), who helps run the winery with Ellia's dad and brother Zac, although her sister Harriet (Millie Spencer-Brown) is happy to have her back. Ellia's mother seems to want to quickly move on with her life with rumours of an affair with David and that she may have been assaulted by Ellia's father. Ellia attempts to keep an arm's distance with her family as there seems to be something that happened in the past that is causing this friction, but that leads her to Lucas (Robert Preston), her ex, who is now a local cop, who she also wants to avoid as he married the other woman. The police then conclude that Ellia's father was actually murdered and arrest the mother possibly because of the something Ellia said to Lucas. But, Ellia is not convinced of this and goes about finding out the truth, focusing on David at first as it seems to be related to the year's bumper crop which may have been because of illegal practises. A worker at the winery Jesse (Aaron Glenane), seems to know something about this that could also be related to the death of his trusty dog, but when Ellia goes to meet him, she finds him dead, apparently by suicide, but of course Ellia is not convinced and continues to follow leads until she finds the shocking truth, which maybe a little closer to home than she imagined. OK thriller despite throwing in numerous red herrings that do bog down the plot, particularly a silly one involving the cop, but the plot is intriguing enough to plow through such obstacles and the final twist is good enough to stop the movie from being a failure. The acting is uneven, the supporting cast is very sketchy and while Sarah Bishop is OK in the lead and I quite like her in her comedy work, I get the feeling that Crushed could have done with a better dramatic actress in the lead. Having said that, Crushed is worth a look if you are into plot driven mysteries thrillers.
