Update for 31 December...

For the last update of the year, here's some new Australian/New Zealand movies.

Harmony is a fantasy thriller where a nurse at a hospital notices that an abandoned baby at a hospital attracts the other babies in the ward and seems to have magical powers and decides to take her home and bring her up. 21 years later, Harmony (Jessica Falkholt) is all grown up and has the power to take the fear from people so that they can go on living. It comes at a physical cost which she can wash away with water but not without great pain. One night, she comes across Beth (Jacqueline McKenzie) in an alley about to kill herself and Harmony arrives just in time to remove her fear about a car accident she was involved in and Beth thanks her and gives her business card telling her to call her any time she needs help. Meanwhile, a gang of goons headed by Jimmy (Eamon Farren) find Harmony's place after her experience with Beth and they trash her place although the stuttering outsider of the gang, Ryan (Hayden Maher), shelters her from being found by the gang. Harmony seeks Beth's help and goes to her house and is met by her son Mason (Jerome Meyer), an enigma of sorts who is strangely attracted to Harmony and can feel her force. The next day, Mason tracks down Harmony and convinces her to come with him and have some fun experiences and they click but there's something that is bothering Mason greatly, possibly the car accident that Beth obsessed over, that causes him great harm and is on the verge of killing him. Jimmy and his gang have tracked down Harmony and Jimmy wants to destroy her. Can Harmony save Mason and find a way to defeat Jimmy? A confusing mess of a movie that has big plans (it seems to be a part of a 5 part series I'm not sure is continuing as the lead actress died tragically almost 2 years ago - it was huge news in Australia at the time) but there is a number of strings of plot that occur throughout the movie that don't come to anything. Harmony's abilities seem to change with mood and seems to have more superpowers than just removing fear and it makes me wonder if there's anything she can't do. She removes Ryan's stutter and makes Jimmy's goons see demons that blow their minds. Also, her greater mission is undefined and the villain of the movie is just as undefined, he just likes doing bad shit for the hell of it. And that's before we get to Mason, who's such an enigma that he wants to find the answers to all the world's big question with a homeless man and then that is abandoned when he meets Harmony. There's a good solid movie somewhere in this movie but as it is, Harmony is an undefined mess, which is a shame.

Now, a couple of New Zealand movies starting with Daffodils, a musical drama where the music is made up of great or popular New Zealand songs from over the years. Maisie (singer Kimbra) comes from visiting her dying father Eric (George Mason) in hospital and begins a gig where she sings songs that correlate with her parent's relationship. In 1966, Eric comes across Rose (Rose McIver) as she wanders around one night and offers to take her home which turns out to be over an hour away. The next day, Rose meets up Eric and suggests that he ask her out on a date, which he does and they get kicked out a cinema for swearing, which Rose does when she gets scared at a horror movie. On their next date, they go to a dance and that is where they kiss for the first time. Rose is hesitant about getting into a relationship with Eric which is enhanced when he tells her he is going on a two year overseas trip to find himself and not helped when she meets his father Barry (Mark Mitchinson) and sees him canoodling with a woman that is not his wife. Rose decides to stick with it and Eric manages to convince her to marry him but the marriage is rocky from the start as Eric wants to be in music but is terrible and is forced to take a job with his father. The years roll by and they have kids and everything is fine but a phone call late at night will change everything forever. A sing-along musical in the vein of Mamma Mia but the only singers are Eric and Rose with interjections from Maisie in concert which would be great if you know the songs but honestly my knowledge of New Zealand music is limited. At best, I know anything from the Split Enz/The Swingers/Crowded House back catalogue and a bit of Bic Runga (sadly Sway doesn't appear in the movie) but I was drawing a blank on everything else. The plot is incredibly flimsy, unsurprising for a musical and a third act twist is so bizarre that is suggests as much as New Zealand is a depressing little place where you can't have happy endings. I can't believe the entire relationship unravelled on the simplest thing that doing another simple thing would have rectified it instantly or close enough to it. Truly bizarre. Mason and McIver are affable enough and their singing passable and nothing more but having said that, the only reason to watch this movie is to enjoy the music as the plot is nothing special and the characters are hardly interesting. And considering I barely knew the music, it was all a bit of miss for me. Ah well...

Status Pending is a low budget slice-of-life movie where Lizzie (Ivana Palezevic) and her American boyfriend Ryan (Ben Zolno) have got the sharehouse they live in to themselves for the weekend and decide to have a little fun in their own terms. Lizzie also wants to go on a worldwide trip by herself and there are limited spaces available but it costs $10,000 which is money she doesn't have. Over the weekend they talk about their relationship, mainly in regards to Facebook and where they are at and whether Lizzie should go on the trip and how she will get the money. They also complete a series of activities to wile away the time, some of which are sexual including an interlude with Lizzie's friend Angie (Harriet Prebble). Will Lizzie get to go on her trip and will their relationship survive the separation? Not much to this movie, mostly just a bunch of talking and a lot of Facebook activity, barely interesting of itself but the two leads seem to be having fun in between the talking sessions. The movie is clearly limited but it makes a go of it and isn't all that boring, it's just not that interesting either.

Decided that the rest of the year would be clearing the slate of movies released this year, well as many as I can.

Night Sweats is the unheralded one of this bunch, a surprisingly good movie about a virus that is spreading across New York and the apparent conspiracy behind it. There's a lot going on, probably way too much but it rollicks along and there's enough plot going on to keep it interesting and finishes with more questions than answers. It's not perfect and at times a tad amateurish but I found it more interesting than any of the other movies in this update.

90s weekend update spewing into Monday. A few movies in today's update, another 90s Spanish movie starring Maribel Verdú, La Buena Estrella. Last Gasp is a bizarre B-thriller where Robert Patrick gets given an ancient Mexican curse that he's allowed to live if he keeps killing for the tribe. Fairly watchable despite the bizarre plot and most of the sex is pretty unnecessary in the movie but that's perfectly fine for this site. Blue Juice is a fairly twee British 'surfing' movie where the joke is there's not much surfing in Britain. Surprisingly very slight movie, harmless, very British and utterly forgettable.

Update for 16 December...

One more Spanish movie for the 90s weekend update and it's the 1993 drama Huevos De Oro (Golden Balls) directed by Bigas Luna (Jamón, Jamón, Volavérunt, Yo Soy La Juani, Di Di Hollywood etc.). Haven't seen it since the 90s when it turned up on SBS regularly and it's still one helluva movie. Basically, Javier Bardem is Benito, the most macho man ever who loves women and wants to build the tallest building in town despite having no money, so he does the one thing he does best (love women) and marries the daughter (Maria de Medeiros) of the banker who won't give him money so that he can get the money while keeping another girl (Maribel Verdú) around. Eventually he introduces them to one another and they surprisingly like each other but their threesome ends badly and leaves Benito struggling and it turns out his building has cut corners and he sabotages his marriage. Wild movie, Bardem is perfectly cast, there's a shitload of sex and zero subtlety (not unusual for a Bigas Luna movie but this movie takes it to the next level) but it's a lot of fun and when Bardem crashes, he crashes real hard, getting massively cuckolded by, of all people, a young Benicio del Toro. Need to get my hands on other Bigas Luna movies from the 90s, more good stuff there.

Update for 15 December...

90s update continues with another Spanish movie, the 1994 romantic drama/terrorist thriller, Días Contados. My first viewing of this interesting movie which mixes an unorthodox love story with a terrorist plot where terrorist bomber, Antonio (Carmelo Gómez), comes to Madrid to set a series of bombs for ETA with his on-off girlfriend Lourdes (Elvira Mínguez) and a bombmaker. Antonio settles in an apartment where the utilities have being co-opted by a neighbour who he then meets and it turns out to be Charo (Ruth Gabriel) who makes her presence felt immediately. Antonio becomes interested in her even though he knows she's a junkie (in denial) and just got out of jail, living with her former cellmate Vanesa (Candela Peña). While Charo (and Vanesa) make money through prostitution (just don't call it that!) and hoping to sell drugs for an almost mythical Portuguese drug dealer, Antonio, Lourdes and co. stuff up one bombing which he makes up by executing a cop. Finally, Charo and Antonio get together but she finds out the truth about Antonio and things go haywire from there. Won all the Spanish film awards in it's year and a career starting movie for all the actresses mentioned, Días Contados is a solid movie that gets down in the grime frequently. Javier Bardem turns up as an unreliable junkie/pimp looking absolutely disgusting. Ruth Gabriel spends a fair portion of the movie without any underwear. Tough watch as it gets depressing and quite nasty at times and apart from a fully contrived ending, is a riveting tale set in a very different time in Spain.

Update for 12 December...

Another couple of Australian movies in today's update.

The Naked Wanderer is romantic comedy where Jake (Angus McLaren) asks his girlfriend Jasmine (Megan Hajjar) to marry him but she dumps him instead. He also gets fired from his job thanks to her as Jake works for her father. He becomes despondent but when he and his friend Cameron (Callan Durlik) see a news story about someone doing a charity bike ride, Cameron convinces Jake to do his own charity walk with the promise of women and that Cameron's uncle, reviled billionaire Brian King (John Cleese) will put a large amount of money towards it. During his meeting with the billionaire, Jake is told to have a catch to his charity walk to get in the people and somehow ends up promising $200,000 for a 'naked' charity walk from the bottom end of Western Australia to the top. There are various problems with that including Western Australia always being hot and full of dangerous animals like snakes and jellyfish. Along the way Jake meets various people including Eli (Alan Little) who is going on his own journey and some British tourists including Valerie (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), who he sees a number of times along the way and they fall for one another. Meanwhile, Jasmine regains her interest in Jake now that he is famous which causes problems with Valerie. All the while, he is 'followed' by the billionaire who is desperate for some good media for once and kept on the path by the billionaire's harried assistant Angel (Sophie Kennedy Clark). Will Jake make it all the way on his journey and can he get Valerie back? Fairly gentle romantic comedy that plays it pretty safe plot wise with some light laughs and not much more. The cast is fairly affable, Jake and Valerie are likeable enough and John Cleese adds a bit of interest and that's about all he brings as he barely lifts a finger throughout and at no stage seems to have filmed any of his role in Australia. His laziness is almost admirable. A nice movie and nothing more.

This Time, Maybe is a romantic drama that follows numerous couples during a flashpoint in their relationship. Over the course of the movie we follow some of the characters in different relationships, some straight, some same-sex. Not much more than that. And to be honest, it's baffling as we follow characters in different relationships at different times without any reason as to why we are doing so. It's just scenes played out by two actors with no connections apart from characters, no explanation as to why a number of characters are bisexual, just scenes like their being shot for a showreel. Completely inessential...

Update for 11 December...

Three new Australian movies, well Animals was made in Ireland but has Australian backing and an Australian director, so it counts.

Animals is a comedy/drama set in Dublin where struggling Irish writer Laura (Holliday Grainger) is best friends with an American woman Tyler (Alia Shawkat) who lives in Dublin to escape her family. The two go out and drink nearly every night and share everything including a flat. At a family dinner, Laura sees her married and pregnant sister Jean (Amy Molloy) and while deriding her for being normal, she wonders what could be. Laura meets pianist Jim (Fra Fee) and they instantly fall for one another and he seems to fit in with Tyler thanks to his love of drinking, just like them. After a brief courtship, they decide to get married and this changes everything in the Laura/Tyler friendship. At the same time, Jim decides to quit drinking as he has a big schedule meaning that he won't be coming out with Laura and Tyler. Laura spends more time with Jim and Tyler starts to spiral out-of-control, not helped by her father dying. While trying to get her writing started, Laura procrastinates and meets poet Marty (Dermot Murphy) and is interested in him but stays loyal to Jim. And Tyler does her bit by pushing Laura towards Marty. Everything will come to a head over a two day period highlighted by Tyler's 30th birthday and things between them may never be the same again. While this movie is clearly not aimed at me, I found the movie to a solid look at two people treading the line of partying forever and growing up and living a normal life. There's a few laughs along the way and it doesn't end with an easy, cop out ending that either way of living is better than the other and is more about the friendship being the cornerstone of these two people's lives. Not bad at all.

Escape And Evasion is a drama where Seth (Josh McConville) has come back from a mission in Myanmar where he is the only one of his squad who survived. He now suffers from PTSD which affects everything in his life including ending his marriage and his interactions with his daughter. A journalist who happens to be the sister of one of the men who died on the mission, Rebecca (Bonnie Sveen), gets in touch with Seth but he is reluctant to talk about what happened. Seth's PTSD is getting worse, but Rebecca is persistent and after a while they fall for one another and he trusts her enough to tell her what happened. Turns out Seth led a squad of four men including Rebecca's brother Josh (Hugh Sheridan), Welshy (Firass Dirani) and Stretch (Juwan Sykes) to the Myanmar jungle to kill a rogue Australian soldier Carl Boddi (Steve Le Marquand) who is now a huge drug trafficker who uses the local army to do his bidding. The mission is a disaster from the beginning with various innocents dying before the squad start dying one by one and when Boddi captures Seth and Josh, Seth is forced to be the arbiter over Josh's life and as we know it doesn't end well while his confession ruptures the relationship between him and Rebecca. A movie that tries to have it both ways; a movie about the effects of PTSD on returning soldiers and an action thriller and it succeeds at neither of them. The action is fairly boring and we already know the result, so there's no tension plus the mission itself is highly dubious and no questioning is done about it happening in the first place. The struggles of PTSD aren't dug into too deeply with Seth finally doing something about it at the last minute. While the movie has noble intentions to highlight an issue hardly talked about in the community, it barely scratches the surface and ends up being underwhelming.

Pipe Dream is a comedy thriller where the state of Queensland has banned illegal drugs and after a police crackdown, the state is pretty much drug free. Enter two high school losers Nate (Nathan Wright) and CJ (Chris Schmuttermaier) who desperately want to go to Schoolies Week but don't fit in. When Nate's hamster dies, he goes back to the pet store and manages to exchange for pet supplies but it turns out that the hamster food that they got is the last known bag of dope in the state and the pet shop owner was holding it for some big crime gang who are not happy with this. Meanwhile, CJ's brother Rob (Robert Griffiths) smokes some of the dope and accidentally breaks a priceless heirloom he uses as a bong and it cost $20,000 to replace. So now they have to sell the weed and the only person they know is Truc (Mercedes Porter) who gets her uncle to sell it. But, there's one big problem; it turns out Nate's father is the Attorney-General involved in the drug crackdown and no one wants to touch it. They need the money, so Nate, CJ, Rob and Truc go to Schoolies to sell the dope to the partying teens and after little interest and issues with crowds hanging around their motel room to buy the drug, Nate and CJ find two girls looking for alcohol but they convince them to buy some dope instead. They manage make more money than they need but there's troubles are not over. The police commissioner goes on a one man mission to find the drugs and the crime gang that owned the drugs are not far off the trail. Not to mention that the person they buy the heirloom off is a racist psychopath who wants their blood. Can the four survive and get away with it all? Silly low budget comedy that is either rehashes old jokes that are obvious or is just plain unfunny. None of this is helped by the limitations of the budget which exacerbates the issues. It doesn't help that the plot is by-the-numbers which makes it kind of boring. And a scene where the two friends 'have' to inexplicably dress up as sheiks is so bad I can't believe it wasn't vetoed. Very poor.

Update for 9 December...

90s weekend bleed into Monday once again. Features a couple of movies directed by good old pervs Dennis Hopper (Chasers) and Robert Altman (Prêt-à-Porter) and both films have some decent sex/nudity throughout.

Chasers is a more mainstream detour from Hopper who's other movies he directed around the same time Backtrack, The Hot Spot and Colors are far less formulaic and in the case of Backtrack, far less downright weird. Fairly stock-standard stuff and pretty unremarkable movie, not funny enough to be a comedy and not enough action to be an action thriller. What it does have is a pretty decent nude scene from Elena Eleniak.

I remember watching Prêt-à-Porter back in the day but barely remember it and on rewatch it felt very much like a lesser Altman movie particularly compared to his previous movies The Player and Short Cuts. Prêt-à-Porter doesn't start well with a standing in dog shit gag which becomes a running joke throughout the movie and it's not funny the first time so you can imagine what it feels like on the 4th and 5th times it gets a run. Most of the observations are obvious or boring and the best bits are the scenes involving Marcello Mastroianni as a mysterious communist who is accidentally involved in the death of the president of fashion week while trying to reconcile with his lost love and the deceased's wife played by Sophia Loren. Not as good as I remembered it to be sadly. Also not happy with the source I got this movie from, needed to find a full Bluray or something of better quality, definitely something not as dark as this source is.

Redux time and I've gone back to the 2009 cheerleader comedy Fired Up!. Went back to the Bluray and wouldn't you know it, it's one of those stupid Unrated Blurays where they have both versions of the movie so it's all broken up and in dozens of pieces, so I have to go through every piece. Aw, shit... And this one is one of the worst example of this stupid process all because of America's stupid classification system. Anyway, it's done. Update for 2 December...

90s update misses the weekend and turns up on Monday. Was planning an update on Saturday from the movie Kama Sutra: A Love Story, got two-thirds done and then wondered why there wasn't any full frontal nude scenes from Indira Varma and it turns out that the Bluray is the cut version, so that was a waste. Anyway, it meant that I finally got around to finishing off the Stitchers update.

The Nemesis series is spun off from the Cyborg series, all made by cheap and nasty master Albert Pyun, who's last movie I capped was the abysmal Kickboxer 4: The Aggressor. As is usually the case with Pyun, he rips off better movies and the first Nemesis flagrantly rips off The Terminator and Robocop, the final scene isn't even subtle about it. The first movie is watchable enough with more than enough action to get past a rubbish plot but it's still not a good movie. Nemesis 2 begins with a different lead, a human who as a baby is brought back to Earth and is looked after by an African tribe until adulthood where the baby turns into an incredibly ripped woman (Sue Price). Who knew African tribes were into bodybuilding... Anyway, a killer goes back in time to kill the now woman in what is an absolute flagrant rip-off of Predator. Price is actually pretty impressive in the action department but the plot is too silly and I was constantly reminded that I would rather Predator or even it's sequel than this movie.

The first and second movies at least have some OK action to make them watchable. The third movie, Time Lapse, is a boring as hell and looks incredibly cheap, the computer effects look feeble and the first half-an-hour is a write-off, just unwatchable monotony until the plot finally takes off and who cares after that. Terrible and a complete waste of time. Cry Of Angels takes a wild turn with the lead character now a for hire assassin who uses sex and her muscular thighs to kill her prey. Of course, she is double-crossed as she does her so-called last job and with the Angel of Death stalking her, it's a race against time to find out who wants her dead. Not a lot of action in this one but an exponential rise in the amount of sex and nudity which wasn't really a thing from Sue Price in her previous movies so it was a little unexpected. There's also an awful lot of talking in this movie which shows up the limitations of the softly spoken Price, clearly more suited to action but she's not that bad. Cry Of Angels is far better than Time Lapse and that's not that hard but it needed more action and less meandering conversations which was probably caused by a diminished budget.
