Redux Friday for 30 August...

It's about time that I revisit a movie I have great affection for.

The Hot Spot is a 1990 noir thriller directed by Dennis Hopper where Harry Madox (Don Johnson) drives into town looking for his next scam. Immediately, he convinces the owner of the car yard, George Henshaw (Jerry Hardin), to give him a salesman job. There, he spies Gloria (Jennifer Connelly), all of 19 years-old, working in accounts and accompanies her to collect money from the derelict account of Frank Sutton (William Sadler), where Gloria acts strangely. Then, he meets George's wife Dolly (Virginia Madsen) and that is the end of him. Dolly invites him to her house, teases him then spurns him. He forces himself on her, she enjoys it, he ends up hating it because she's making all the moves. One day after a fire in town, Harry notices that the bank is left almost vacant except for the manager and frequent strip club patron (Jack Nance) and that gives him an idea to rob the bank, which he does with ease, except he's the most obvious suspect until Dolly gives him an alibi. Harry is falling for Gloria and this includes dealing with the incredibly sleazy Frank who has something over her, but Dolly has a tight grip on him and with this alibi hanging over his head, Harry's going to have a helluva time getting what he wants. Hadn't watched this movie since I first capped it in 2004 after I first watched it as a teenager ten years previous, so it was time to revisit it 10 years on from the Bluray and well, while the transfer isn't the greatest, it still looks pretty damn good and holds up extremely well. Johnson and Madsen are both excellent, Connelly still looks all innocent and virginal and William Sadler is as sleazy as can be. And of course, there's some excellent nudity.

Redux Friday for 29 August...

Collages and videos from I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry now available here.
Collages and videos from Disturbia now available here.

Not that time of the week again where I blast away at stuff I've already done and re-released in 3D HD. I probably spend too much time on redoing stuff, but I've had a look at a list of stuff and I've whittled away quite a bit of old stuff and it shouldn't be long before that slows to a crawl and I can focus more on new stuff and Australian Classics. Hell, I might even bother doing stuff on the TV side of the site as that has been seriously neglected recently.

Update for 26 August...

Cam2Cam is a Bangkok based thriller that begins with Lucy (Jade Tailor) being humiliated and brutally murdered by Russell (Russell Geoffrey Banks), who in turn kills himself when confronted by police. Meanwhile, Lucy's sister Allie (Tammin Sursok) has arrived in Bangkok to find out what happened to her and to find her missing head. She arrives at the apartment complex where Lucy was murdered and finds a group of foreign nationals living there in what looks like a tight knit group. One of the girls, Marit (Sarah Bonrapaux), gives Allie a tour around the local area and then introduces her to webcam sex site Cam2Cam, which Lucy was using before she dies. After Allie takes a look at the site, strange things happen, including the disappearance of Marit, but Allie is desperate to find out about her sister and she's about to find out that the tight knit group are very much involved in Lucy's murder. Disappointing movie that has an interesting idea about someone manipulating others, but wastes it on cheap and unsatisfying thrills and a deeply unsatisfying ending. The opening scene of the movie is far too long and drags out to a third of the movie. Allie's desperation becomes quite laughable during one sequence that involves her running around the streets of Bangkok with a tomahawk and nobody giving a shit. Maybe that's a regular occurrence in Bangkok, I don't know.

Just a word of warning, even though the movie is in 1080HD, the quality is quite appalling. I don't even know if it's meant to be like that or it was poorly encoded, which I assume is the reason, but it's as bad as I've ever seen. It doesn't help that the colours are very drab throughout. It's still very watchable, but some sections looks like it's been rotoscoped. Ah well...

Update for 24 August...

The Ganzfeld Haunting is a horror thriller where a group of psychology students are staying 24 hours at an abandoned house where they will be performing psychological experiments involving ESP for a final credit. Headed by straight A student Becket (Taylor Cole) and joined by Eliot (Ryan Donowho), Graves (Toby Hemingway) and wannabe actress Lucky (Rumer Willis), they settle in for a long day with the help of alcohol and cocaine. Then, they begin the experiments, but they go badly until an outside force enters and implants images of something that happened years ago in the abandoned house involving Becket and Graves with Becket's previously unknown sister and Graves long dead father (Billy Zane). It seems that Becket's unknown sister is haunting the house in an older guise (Laura Wiggins) and she is going to get her revenge and she's going to convince her sister to fulfill her wishes. Oh wow, this one is an absolute shocker and I think this movie may have the record for the most cocaine snorted on screen... and off. Not a lot of sense can be made with the plot and the character of Becket is a disaster. The other characters are barely worth a damn although Rumer Willis spends most of the movie in her underwear and swigging alcohol, when not doing another line of neverending coke. No wonder this movie was shelved for over two years. Could've done with more nudity too. And barely any Billy Zane craziness...

Redux for 23 August...

Collages and videos from Never Back Down is now available here.
Collages and videos from Almost Married is now available here.

A couple of quick HD redos today, one an update from the series I did a couple of months back. Apparently there's a sequel to Never Back Down, a high school MMA movie which I remember not liking at all and flicking through it again, I rolled my eyes a few times remembering why. But, the sequel, released a few years back, looks completely unrelated except that the wimpy best friend seems to be back. And sadly, every straight-to-DVD MMA movie seems to be exactly the fucking same and bizarrely, they seem to be quite sleazy, so I doubt this will be any different.

Update for 19 August...

Didn't have much ready to go and this movie was on the same Bluray as Solstice which I capped in the last redux update, so why not?

Messengers 2: The Scarecrow is a horror movie about John (Norman Reedus), a struggling farmer whose cornfield is slowly leading John and his family to ruin. One day, he finds a scarecrow locked up and he decides to put it in the field against the wishes of his young son who seems to be warning him about it. The next day, he wakes to find a whole bunch of dead crows and his corn is starting to grow. Then people that are getting in the way of John are found brutally murdered in the cornfield. But, this change in luck also changes John whose behaviour changes and he takes it out on his family, mainly his wife (Heather Stephens). When John discovers that the scarecrow is changing him, he enlists the help of his mysterious new neighbours Jude (Richard Riehle) and his younger wife Miranda (Darcy Fowers), who seem to know more than they are letting on. But, are they helping him or helping him fall apart? Fairly stock standard thriller that's a little nonsensical, but isn't all bad and there's some nice nudity from Darcy Fowers. Funnily enough I thought I'd seen the original, but it turns out that I was thinking of another Kristen Stewart movie set on a farm with a similar storyline, Cold Creek Manor. Ah, they're all the same...

Australian VHS Classics for 18 August...

It's been a while since I've gone through the VHS collection, so here's a couple of 'classics' from the year of 1988.

Fever is a 1988 noir thriller set in some far out town in South Australia, where cop Jack Welles (Bill Hunter) is watching a big deal being made by a couple of international crooks. Meanwhile, his much young wife Leanne (Mary Regan) is having her way with local stud Jeff (Gary Sweet). When one of the crooks blows up the suitcase he exchanged, Jack goes after him and in the ensuing chase, the crook overturns his vehicle and dies. Jack spies a suitcase, which is full of $100 notes and decides to take it for himself before the other cops arrive to assist him. He drives home to hide the suitcase and catches Leanne and Jeff having sex and in the ensuing fight, Jeff accidentally kills Jack. Of course, the now need to hide the body and come up with a believable story, so they decide to dump him in an abandoned mineshaft. By this time, another cop Morris (Jim Holt) has worked out that Jack is up to something. And with Jack destroying Jeff's car, they take Jack beat up old station wagon where he's hidden the suitcase full of cash. Also, Jack is not dead and he wants his money. Watching this movie it struck me that it was reminiscent of director Craig Lahiff's last film (sadly he died recently), Swerve. And by reminiscent, I mean pretty much exactly the same. But, nowhere is Swerve considered a remake which I suppose isn't a problem if your remaking your own movie. Strange, I'll have to get out Swerve to see if it's mentioned. Anyway, Fever is alright thriller that actually doesn't have the issues in the final act that plague Swerve and even has the same last minute twist. Fever is far better grounded and much faster paced with the plot continually flowing as this movie takes place in one day where there's an overnight stay in Swerve. OK, Fever is a better movie than Swerve even though it's pretty much the same movie.

The 13th Floor (always confused with the Craig Bierko/Gretchen Mol sort-of similar 1999 movie of the same name) is a 1988 thriller where young Heather Thompson witnesses her father killing a young boy on the top of a building that is being built by electrocution. 12 years later, Heather (Lisa Hensley) hates her father and has stolen some documents implementing him in the killing as well as other crimes he's committed. Her father (Tony Blackett) is having none of that and gets his henchman Brenner (Vic Rooney) to do whatever it takes to get it back. Heather and her junkie friend Rebecca (Miranda Otto) are living off the dole and decide that the best place to hide is on the deserted 13th floor of the building where the murder happened, which just happens to be where the dole office is. They are helped by friend Nick (Paul Hunt), who seems to work at the building with the 'ever vigilant' security guard Bert (Jeff Truman), who lives on the top of the building. Brenner finds Heather and makes an attempt to get back the documents, but seems to be killed by an electrical force that could be the dead boy. Meanwhile, Heather befriends John (Tim McKenzie), a drone at the dole office and they fall in love, much to the chagrin of Rebecca. And then the bodies start piling up. Heather's father wants those documents even if it means killing his daughter. But, a young boy seems to have a long memory. Bafflingly preposterous thriller that's surprisingly bloodthirsty with some brutal killings but doesn't really work, not the least that the killer electro kid starts bumping off those not involved in his death. Hensley has never really been an emotive actress and just doesn't cut it as a lead and always works better in support, Miranda Otto was probably a better choice than in the miserable role she ends up with. But, I will say that there's some great sinister work going on with the bad guys, they were well cast and the brutality sort of works. Even in a small role, Michael Caton plays a sinister doctor that is pretty much against type for him. And watch out for Georgie Parker in a blink and you'll miss role as the father's maid.

As always with VHS series, the quality is down. The picture is fine is both movies, sadly the sound is crackling all the way through the Fever videos and while it's sound is fine, the extra noise is a little off-putting. I doubt they'll be a better version, not even a DVD release for the movie. Also, I finally made a collage of Mary Regan from a previous VHS series movie, Out of the Body, that I couldn't be bothered getting around to when I released it. Sadly, there's only brief nudity from Mary in Fever, about as much as Emma Booth has in Swerve, but she has nudity in other movies, most notably the New Zealand movie Heart of the Stag, which I should pick up a copy of as it's on DVD overseas and also in Midnight Dancer/Belinda, which I doubt will ever see a DVD release, but I'll look into it.

Update for 12 August...

This update features two recent movies from director Álex de la Iglesia, who is just the right type of crazy.

Balada Triste de Trompeta (The Last Circus) is an insane drama where young Javier is watching a clown (de la Iglesia regular Santiago Segura) when the show is interrupted and the clown is forced to join the Spanish Civil War, where he saves his platoon. He also becomes a surrogate father for Javier before the clown is brutally beaten. Now in 1973, Javier (Carlos Areces) is a clown who joins a travelling circus where he meets acrobat Natalia (Carolina Bang) and falls instantly in love, but there's one problem. She's the property of the the circus's showcase clown Sergio (Antonio de la Torre) and he a complete arsehole and treats her like dirt when he's not beating up on her. After a while, Natalia begins to show affection back and they go to the fair together for a date until Sergio catches them and beats Javier to a bloody pulp and also hits Natalia. Javier thinks that this will make Natalia see the error of her ways and leave Sergio, but when he comes back the circus, he finds them having sex and he goes ballistic, returning the beating to Sergio and going so far as disfiguring. Javier runs away to escape the authorities and the circus is shutdown, but Javier wants Natalia and he will now do anything have her. But, there's still the problem of Sergio... Wow, this movie has the crazy vibe that de la Iglesia seems to have in every second film he makes and I've got to admit I like his crazy stuff (Acción Mutante, El Día de la Bestia, Perdita Durango) better than his straighter stuff. And this is the most batshit crazy he's ever been and I loved every minute of it including a final act that so insane that is best described as a clown with a machine gun versus a disfigured monster. Absolutely crazy and I absolutely loved it.

Las Brujas de Zugarramurdi (Witching and Bitching) is the latest 'crazy' movie from de la Iglesia where two men, José (Hugo Silva) and Antonio (Mario Casas), rob a jewellery store dressed as street performers, but things go wrong, not the least that José has brought his young son along. They escape in a taxi and avoid a shitload of police and have seemed to have gotten away with it except that José's ex Silvia (Macarena Gómez) gets wind of what's happened and goes after them using an app of her son's phone and is closely followed by a couple of detectives. Everything is fine until they enter the town of Zugarramurdi and stop off at a motel that is run by Graciana (Carmen Maura) with the help of Eva (Carolina Bang). They decide to move on, but it hard to escape Zugarramurdi, especially when your loot goes missing. They decide to go back to the motel and find that the people that run it are powerful witches and they are intent on adding to their flock, oh and eating the young boy. A fun movie that doesn't quite hit the heights or the craziness of The Last Circus, but that's not from trying. There's still plenty of batshit crazy stuff to enjoy but I feel that witches are a tough protagonist to make a decent villain out of, they're all a bit weird and into weird shit that not so much crazy as odd. I liked the movie, but witches just don't do it for me I'm afraid.

Update for 10 August...

A couple of quick series today.

God's Pocket is a drama set in the titular town sometime in the late 70s-early 80s where everybody is either stealing or scamming to get by. When Mickey's (Philip Seymour Hoffman) stepson dies on his work site in mysterious circumstances, his wife Jeanie (Christina Hendricks) gets Mickey to find out the truth about what happened. He also is trying to scrape together $6,000 for the funeral while trying to get rid of a truck full of stolen meat. It doesn't help that his best friend Bird (John Turturro) has his own problems. But when local journalist Richard Shellburn (Richard Jenkins) is enlisted to write a story on the death, he falls instantly for Jeanie and this will change everything for all involved. A slimy, sweaty, ugly movie that is well cast for this, but the story only feels half finished and the ending fairly unsatisfying. It also seems like it should've been played for more laughs as it isn't all that funny even with the circumstances seemingly comical and all the characters are horrible and sleazy. It's an OK movie, better for it's great cast, but disappointing nonetheless.

The Reckoning is a thriller about a detective, Robbie (Jonathan LaPaglia), who is about to have the worst day ever. With his wife already hating him and already catching a buzz, Robbie is called in to investigate the murder of his good mate and fellow detective (Luke Hemsworth) with his partner in more ways than one (Viva Bianca). Left one his body is a shitload of video featuring Rachel (Hanna Mangan Lawrence), who is dying of cancer and a friend (Alex Williams). Turns out Rachel's mother filed a missing person's report a couple of days before and this leads to them following the trail their video which seems to be a documentary finding out about the death of her sister. This leads to some very unsavoury characters, who seem to be turning up dead. But, how does this lead back to his dead friend and is Rachel really the victim she seems to be? A decidedly average thriller from the maker other decidedly average (or worse) thrillers (Crush, Needle also the writer of deplorable Prey) that thrives off the clichés, particularly the cop off the rails ones, but the mystery goes nowhere until there's a desperate need to forward the plot with a revelatory video, which you've probably worked out beforehand anyway. Shouldn't have expected anything more, but I'm a sucker for Hanna Mangan Lawrence (again with Viva Bianca!), who's actually the best thing about this movie, but that's not saying much sadly.

Christina Hendricks in God's Pocket

Redux for 9 August...

Collages and videos from The Grudge 2 now available here.
Collages and videos from Remember Me now available here.
Collages and videos from Separation City now available here.

Some quick redux series today.

And I saw the newly released Australian movie These Final Hours just released in cinemas, a pretty decent effort in that now overwhelming genre of movie set in the last days on Earth. More a drama about how to make the most of the last moments than a reflective movie or action thriller that most American movies of the same genre are, it stars Nathan Phillips as a man who was going to spend his last moments getting wasted at an end of the world party with his 'girlfriend', but a spanner is thrown in those plans when he decides to save a young girl from a fate worse than death and takes care of her as he decides whether or not to get the young girl to her absent father. Expanded version of an also pretty decent short movie and definitely one of the better Australian movies of the year, even though I'm kinda tired of the genre as a whole. Sadly and predictably, it's been largely ignored by the public, even with bigger promotion than most Australian movies.

In regards to nudity/sexy stuff in the movie, well none of the speaking female parts have any nudity, but there are various women that show breasts and bum in the party scene, but I doubt we'll know there names. Also, Jessica de Gouw shows some side-boob, bare back and is strategically 'nude' during a sex scene in the opening moments of the movie. There are also flashbacks to her sitting/lying on the bed throughout the movie. Also in a bikini in a later scene. And Kathryn Beck is in some sort of swimwear that looks like underwear but is actually a one piece bathing suit on closer inspection. Nothing from Sarah Snook (Not Suitable For Children), although her demise is a highlight but she's in the soon to be released Predestination (next month), which could have some nudity from her.

Update for 6 August...

Let's continue the Spanish update for the moment, but don't worry, I don't have a lot to play with. Anyway, I haven't actually properly watched the two below movies, mainly because I haven't found English subtitles for either, but the gist is the Presentimientos is about a woman (Marta Etura) who is in a coma after a car accident and she tries to escape her come using various remnants of memories she has while her husband (Eduardo Noriega) struggles with their baby. Looks interesting, hopefully I could watch it properly soon. ¿Quién mató a Bambi? (Who Killed Bambi?, wow, they finally made that Sex Pistols movie...) is actually a remake of the Mexican movie Matando Cabos which had site fave Ana Claudia Talancón in it (sadly, I never got around to cap it, she does have a brief nude scene in it from memory), this seems to follow a similar path about a big shot's daughter's boyfriend who accidentally knocks out the big shot while other people are planning to kidnap the big shot. Something like that.

Update for 5 August...

How 'bout a Spanish update.

Ocho Apellidos Vascos is a comedy where Rafa (Dani Rovira) meets Amaia (Clara Lago) during a flamenco dance night where they argue, then later begin a one night stand before she falls asleep. The morning after, she disappears but leaves behind her bag. Rafa wants to give her bag back but she lives in Basque territory and he has never been out of Seville. And Andalusian and Basque people hate each other. But, Rafa is determined to give back her bag and takes the bus to her town, but she barely remembers him from the night before. Meanwhile, Amaia frequently absent father Koldo (Karra Elejalde) arrives back from his latest fishing trip and Amaia is desperate to impress him, saying that she is engaged to a man who just happens to be now an ex-boyfriend and her father wants to meet him. Amaia desperately convinces Rafa to be her ex-boyfriend, a Basque man, to which he agrees reluctantly, but of course he doesn't live in the town and in an attempt to convince her father that he lives in the town, he breaks into a house, which turns out to be the home of Merche (Carmen Machi), a woman he met on the bus into the town and who more than willingly agrees to go along with the ruse. Over time Rafa and Amaia get closer to one another and so do Koldo and Merche, but how long can they carry on this ruse before Koldo discovers the truth. Ah, the old mistaken identity meets fish out of water plot, never gets old. Personally, I have no idea about the tensions between the Andalusian and Basque people, so that tension in the story I just didn't understand at all, but the rest is all pretty universal. The film is OK, but really is just going over old ground and is probably best watched if you are Spanish, just as The Castle is best watched if you are Australian.
