Spanish Update for 30 April...

Let's continue on with the Pedro Almodóvar movies.

Carne Trémula (Live Flesh) is a 1997 drama/thriller about Victor (Liberto Rabal) who has just gotten out of jail after apparently accidentally shooting police officer David (Javier Bardem) after he responds with his partner Sancho (José Sancho) to a call from a neighbour of Elena (Francesca Neri) about another gun shot that happen during a struggle. While in prison, he has gotten a degree in education as well as other improvement and heads back to his childhood home, now in disrepair, with the 150,000 pesetas his mother (Penélope Cruz in a flashback) bequeathed to him. At the cemetery where he visits his mother's grave, he sees another funeral and spots Elena, who is there for her father's funeral and makes his presence known and she is shocked by this. Also at the cemetery, Victor meets the much older Clara (Ángela Molina) and they take a liking to one another and they begin an affair. Clara also happens to be the wife of Sancho. Elena tells her husband, David, who is wheelchair bound because of the shooting that she saw him and David makes it known to Victor that he is not to contact Elena again. But Victor and Elena are fated to be together, no matter what David says and the seeds are sown when Victor takes a volunteer job at the children's shelter where Elena works. Probably the closest Almodóvar has ever gotten to a thriller, possibly because it's based on a Ruth Rendell mystery (I'm wondering how much though as the movie feels very much an Almodóvar tale). But, Live Flesh is not much of a mystery and is more about a group of people whose fates have drawn them together. I really like this movie there's a lot stirring in the story and it has a few little touches which work well like the whole bus thing which takes up a surprising amount of the runtime also it's possibly his sexiest tale particularly with one of Almodóvar's trope of a man making a woman fall for him. I definitely think it's one of his more underrated movies.

Hable con Ella is a 2002 drama where Marco (Darío Grandinetti) sees a female bullfighter Lydia González (Rosario Flores) on the television and decides to do an interview with her. When he meets her, she asks him to get her out of a tricky situation and take her home, but at her house she encounters a snake and decides to spend the night elsewhere. After this Marco and Lydia begin a relationship which comes to a sudden halt when she is violently gored by a bull and goes into a coma. Marco visits her in hospital constantly and meets male nurse Benigno (Javier Cámara) and they strike up a friendship. Benigno introduces Marco to his favourite comatose patient Alicia (Leonor Watling), who Benigno strangely knew before being a patient as he had become obsessed with watching her dance at the studio across from his window. One day, Benigno tells Marco that he would like to marry Alicia, even though she is comatose. Marco sternly warns him, but at the same time Alicia stops mensuration and an investigation concludes that she is pregnant and Benigno is the likely culprit. He is jailed and Marco, who has come home from an overseas trip to the news that Lydia has died, visits Begnino in jail and he wants to know what happened to Alicia, who has left the hospital. Bizarre, even by Almodóvar's standard but actually quite touching drama that more about two men that have become unlikely friends and the quite horrifying behaviour one of them exhibits. Funnily enough, I've confused this movie with the similar Lucía y el Sexo (Sex and Lucia), both out at a similar time as well and with a similar cast and I also completely forgot about the bullfighter part of the story which isn't a major focus anyway. It's an interesting tale in a time when Almodóvar became more serious, but still has his left field flourishes and is definitely an odd, but affecting movie.

Spanish Update for 27 April...

A couple of Pedro Almodóvar movies from the 90s.

Tacones Lejanos (High Heels) is a 1991 drama where Rebeca (Victoria Abril), a well-known newsreader, welcomes her famous singer mother Becky del Páramo (Marisa Paredes) back into town for her latest series of concerts. But things are very different. Rebeca has married Manuel (Féodor Atkine) who used to be the partner of Becky, much to her chagrin. The three go to a nightclub where they see Rebeca's friend, drag queen Lethal (Miguel Bosé) perform and this makes everyone uncomfortable, so much so that not long after, Manuel is found murdered. After denying any involvement, Rebeca confesses on the live broadcast and is arrested by local judge Juez Domínguez (also Miguel Bosé) and is sent to remand although Dominguez is not completely convinced of her guilt and manages to get her out of prison after telling her mother that she didn't kill him. So, who really did kill Manuel and what is the drag queen/judge's angle. Almodóvar mostly made cheeky comedies up until High Heels which is practically a straight drama with a cheeky moment or two. It's a great story between a mother and daughter who are very distant from one another and are forced into one last try at finding a connection. The murder mystery is almost irrelevant and the double and triple life living judge almost a misstep if not for it being surprisingly underplayed. It works extremely well because the two leads are given a great story to get a hold of and they both grab it with both hands.

Kika is a 1993 comedy told by Kika (Verónica Forqué, Almodóvar's most underrated actress), a bubbly make-up artist who one day is called into a TV show to do the make-up for American writer Nicholas (Peter Coyote). He likes her job so much that later, Kika is asked by Nicholas to do the make-up on his dead son Ramón (Àlex Casanovas), who is actually not dead. Kika dazzles both father and son and she moves in with the son who lives below his father in an apartment block. Meanwhile, tabloid journalist/presenter Andrea Caracortada aka Scarface (Victoria Abril) attempts to get Nicholas to write some scripts for her show but she really wants to know more about the death of his wife 3 years previous by apparent suicide. All is not well in the household and someone is spying on the house and it becomes clear that all is not well in the household and Andrea Scarface will do anything to get that scoop. That's when the bodies start piling up. Just when you think he might be becoming sensible, Almodóvar makes the absolutely ludicrous Kika and throws that out the window. Honestly, Kika feels like a misstep, sure, there's plenty of laughs and Verónica Forqué is an absolute whirlwind of bubbly fun as Kika, but saying this movie is over-the-top is being generous. There's the comical rape scene which goes on and on and on and is incredibly dicey, but I'm not going to say that I didn't get a few laughs out of the whole scene, hell it's so ridiculously funny, but... There's Ramón's death spells, one ended by Kika using a lamp to revive him. Pretty much everything Andrea Scarface does is ridiculous. Then there's the obvious dubbing of Peter Coyote with a line that he doesn't speak Spanish well, oh except for the entire movie... Get the feeling this movie caused the change in direction that Almodóvar takes with pretty much every movie up until I'm So Excited being straight dramas, which probably wasn't a bad thing because there's some great, more mature stories after Kika.

Spanish Update for 26 April...

Today, three 80s movies from Pedro Almodóvar starring Carmen Maura before they had a falling out and didn't work together again for nearly 20 years. Of the movies featured below Mujeres al Borde de un Ataque de Nervios (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown) is well and truly his best and Carmen Maura is on fire in this movie as her character desperately tries to speak to her lover about whether their relationship is actually over. Meanwhile, everyone gets in the way. The other two movies are not bad either, ¿Qué he hecho yo para merecer esto! (What Have I Done To Deserve This?) has the wacky premise of a glue sniffing, No-Doze addicted mother who just wants to get rid of her family so she can have some peace and then it happens... La Ley del Deseo (Law of Desire) is about a gay director who pines for one bloke, but then he begins an affair with another man who is obsessed with him (played by Antonio Banderas) and then he kills his love rival all while the director attempts to perk up his struggling sister (who used to be his brother) and her daughter. I'll move onto the 90s next update.

Spanish Update for 24 April...

The first of the Pedro Almodóvar series.

Átame! (Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!) is a 1989 comedy where Ricky (Antonio Banderas) is let out of a mental hospital and the first thing he does is track down porn star Marina (Victoria Abril), who is filming her latest movie directed by Máximo (Francisco Rabal), who has a crush on her. When the shoot ends, Ricky follows her home and busts his way into her apartment and violently detains her. He ties her up with the intention of making her fall in love with him. But, there are complications including Marina needing hard drugs for a busted tooth that Ricky gave her while detaining her. Also, her Marina's sister, Lola (Loles León) is concerned about her when she doesn't turn up to the wrap party she promised to. Slowly, but surely Ricky charms Marina and achieves his objective, but is it enough for long-lasting love. As a big Almodóvar fan, I'm ashamed to say that this was the one movie of his that I hadn't seen (although I've only seen the second half of Labyrinth of Passion) and I can't even think why I've missed it. Possibly because I've seen the sexy scenes from the movie and didn't think to watch it, but this is a strange omission. Anyway, what a shame that's been because this is one of his best and a part of that awesome three movie run he had (Women On the Verge and High Heels are also top class). Abril and Banderas are sensational as an onscreen couple and that scene where Marina finally gives in is as sizzling as anything I've ever seen. The comedy is also pretty ridiculous and funny too, lots of little touches like Ricky's mustache, the pharmacist telling them to get prescription drugs from the drug dealers down the street because she didn't have them also Ricky trying to find the most comfortable rope and bandage to use on Marina. The scene where Ricky gets angry with Marina when she tries to steal his keys is just top notch and of course, the scuba diver. This movie is highly watchable even despite the dicey areas it goes and I can't believe I'd waited this long to watch it. What was I thinking...

Spanish Update for 23 April...

Technically starting up the Spanish 'Classics' series today.

Airbag is a 1997 comedy about Juantxo (Karra Elejalde) who is about to get married and is taken on a buck's party to a brothel by his two friends Pako (Alberto San Juan) and Konradin (Fernando Guillén Cuervo). Juantxo reluctantly gets entertained by a prostitute (Vicenta N'Dongo) before she suggests something a little more exotic, which works. Except in the process, Juantxo has lost the expensive engagement ring up the prostitute's arse (ahem!). She gives it to her boss Villambrosa (Francisco Rabal) who finds out it's worth a fortune and attempts to kill the friends when he they come to get the ring. The friends get a ride to next brothel owned by Villambrosa, but there they are mistaken for Portuguese gangsters led by Fatima (Maria de Medeiros) and are given a suitcase full of drugs. The friends are chased by the Portuguese gangsters back into Spain as they attempt to get home for the wedding. Oh and a whole lot of other stuff happen involving the bride's mother (Rosa Maria Sardà), a pedophile politician (Santiago Segura) looking to lead Spain and a bunch of other people and a bunch of shootouts. This movie is so nonsensical with way too much going on before it goes into a lull for most of the second hour before ending in exhaustion after 132 minutes with an ending which is so ridiculous it actually suits the movie. At no stage does this movie know what it wants to be, so it's everything; a sex comedy, a Tarantino-like gangster movie, a madcap chase comedy etc. with a whole bunch of cameos (admittedly I don't know who a lot are although Javier Bardem turns up in a terrible soap opera that the movie completely stops to watch...). The editor must have been asleep during this one, so just put in everything, some'll stick even if most will fail. And then there's the explanation of the title with a number of scenes involving airbags. Why? Airbag is one helluva mess, not a good one, but a messy one that's for sure.

I remember Nathalie Seseña from a slew of 90s Spanish movies I remember watching on SBS back in the day (funnily enough, I don't remember Airbag getting a run as I'm sure I would've remembered it, but El Día de la Bestia got a big run), but the one movie I remember her from was Atómica, a movie that makes Airbag look like a masterpiece from memory, it's that bad. There's this one scene early one where she plays a character complaining about not getting any sex and then has this awesome sex scene with a security guard at a shopping mall, which may have been a fantasy, my memory is a bit iffy. Sadly can't find a copy of the movie as I'd definitely cap it. Maybe remember if the movie was as terrible as I think it to be...

Spanish Update for 21 April...

After a brief diversion, the Spanish update with some movies released a bit more recently, in fact two are relatively recent (Magical Girl and El Amor no es lo Que Era). Katmandú, un Espejo en el Ciel is a pretty decent movie mostly in English starring Verónica Echegui as a teacher who is attempting to teach disadvantaged kids in Nepal but comes up against many barriers, mainly ancient, never going to change customs and problems with her resident status. Magical Girl from the director of Diamond Flash, is in a similar baffling style to that movie and is about a father of a sick child who wants to buy a 6800 Euro replica dress of her favourite Japanese cartoon character. That's only the start of the weirdness that ends so bizarrely and horrifically, I still can't work it out. El Amor no es lo Que Era is a multi-generational love story that follows 3 different couples at different stages of their relationships.

That's it for the recent updates. I'm going to head back a few years and cap a few Spanish movies I remember watching back in the day and have recently rewatched.

Update for 20 April...

Haven't quite got the next Spanish update ready so let's go with another quick update.

Bedlam (bizarrely a part of the After Dark horror series) is a thriller set in 1964 where George Kilner (Guy Edmonds), a man riddled with mental illness passed on from him by his mother, admits himself into the Bedlam Institution to undergo a radical new technique administered by highly regarded Dr Black (Peter McAllum). But, when he gets there, George is greeted by a group of sadistic guards led by Keeper (Johnny Boxer, hey wasn't he in the last movie) who set a rigourous regime of torture behind the doctor's back. George becomes friends with fellow patients Cutter (Gary Boulter), a man obsessed with self-harm and Sofia Louis (Cassandra Swaby), a world famous actress who lets people walk all over her to the detriment of her sanity. Together, they attempt to survive the place, but when it become clear the treatment involving shock therapy isn't working and that the guard's routine of torture is breaking them down, it become a matter of survival and some just aren't going to make it. Billed as a horror movie, but it very much isn't one, more a survival thriller of both the physical and mental kind, Bedlam is a strange beast. The combination of the guard's reckless torture and regular shockings both as a part of a trial and torture are not a lot of fun to watch making Bedlam one depressing movie. There's also weird interludes involving a sort of 50s/60s moving picture feel, like wacky sitcom-like ads highlighting their situation which results in an ending that needs to be seen to be believed. And this feels very out of place, like it wants to be a black comedy, but it is not that type of movie either. A strange, strange movie that is very hard to recommend.

The Not Spanish Update for 17 April...

Taking a brief diversion away from the Spanish Update for the moment for a quick look at a new Australian release. But don't worry, I'll be back to the Spanish Update in no time.

Fat Pizza vs. Housos is the mix of two comedy TV shows created by Paul(y) Fenech (credited as both in movie), Fat Pizza and Housos, well 3 if you count a brief mention of Swift and Shift Couriers. Bobo (Johnny Boxer) has been released from prison after serving time for killing a health inspector with his trusty chainsaw. Taken into the care of his mother, Mama (Maria Venuti), they decide to reopen the Pizza shop but this time in Sunnyvale. Meanwhile, Franky (Pauly Fenech) 'thongs' (smacking someone with a thong/flip-flop) the premier and becomes the most wanted man in the state with a police taskforce set up to get him. Nobody from Sunnyvale wants to work at the pizza shop because they are all bludgers, so Mama gets her nephew who works at Centrelink to set up a work-for-the-dole scheme at the pizza shop, which ends up only roping in the mentally handicapped Reg and former pizza delivery boy/drug dealer Habib (Tahir Bilgic). Pauly (Paul Fenech), a former pizza delivery man, has spent the last 15 years the prisoner of a sadistic S&M freak and now back in the real world, he gets his old job back. Also, the premier has bought in new anti-bikie laws which strips the Hunterz, lead by Angry (Angry Anderson) and Johnno (David Cooper), of their bikes and they are having trouble getting their share. With the cops indisposed bumbling after Franky, who is having sex with more and more women, a gang of multi-national thugs set up by the Arabs join forces to take on the bikies, with the multi-national gang using the pizza shop as its base. When the pizza shop is in need of making more money, Mama sets up a plan with Centrelink to make their dole payments be paid with food vouchers, specifically for the pizza shop. This sets off Shazza (Elle Dawe) who sets up a group to take down the pizza shop, but maybe the bikies will get there first.

As with the Paul Fenech TV shows they are based on, they are all hit and miss, mostly miss but work through the sheer rapid fire nature of the shows and there's definitely plenty of politically incorrect laughs throughout the movie and I enjoyed it enough. I had some issues working out the dynamics of the Pizza crew as I didn't watch a lot of Pizza during it's 5 series and numerous movies and specials particularly the running gags from that show. Interesting to see the original 'Wog Boys' Nick Giannopoulos and George Kapiniaris turn up in a weird crossover, but it seems they are playing characters they played on the Pizza series. Mixing the two shows at least gets rid of the problem of the first movie Housos vs. Authority where it ran out of ideas by half way and the rest of the movie was just unfunny plot. And I enjoyed this movie more than the first movie. Also only a brief mention of Swift and Shift Couriers is a sure sign that it was mostly ignored by Fenech's fan base, so no Fat Pizza vs. Housos vs. Swift and Shift Couriers next up. A 'To Be Continued' ending suggests something more to add, but I thought it ended satisfactorily enough although it also suggests that the planned ending was possibly too expensive. And where would they go from there to 'finish' that 5 more minutes couldn't have solved.

With the usual 'comic' sex scenes that come with Housos, there's also a few deleted and extended scenes from the Bluray below and also great of Fenech to have an extended sex reel. Cheers!

Spanish Update for 16 April...

The final Elsa Pataky update for the moment, today featuring a couple of quick series from movies released in 2003, neither I really watched but both are comedies, Atraco a las 3... y Media looks like a sleazy caper movie and El Furgón looks like it's about three crooks that hole up in a mansion after escaping and are trying to avoid the cops and some crooks. Elsa plays a willing accomplice, almost the only woman in the movie.

Spanish Update for 15 April...

The next Elsa Pataky update, this time from the 2010 fame journey drama Di Di Hollywood, the final movie directed by Bigas Luna (Jamón, Jamón).

Di Di Hollywood is about Diana (Elsa Pataky), a working in a bar actress in Madrid, who dreams big, but is going nowhere in the Spanish scene, so she decides to move to Miami, trying to coax her best friend María (Flora Martínez) to come with her, but she declines. In Miami, Diana continues to struggle, barely booking anything and ends up being kicked out of her hotel room, when Nora (Giovanna Zacarías) takes pity on her and lets her move into a small room she knows about and gets Diana a job at the restaurant she works at. At an audition she again fails badly, Diana meets aspiring director Robert (Luis Hacha) and they start going out and then fall in love. They both decide to go to Los Angeles when he gets a job offer and bring Nora with them. In Los Angeles, Diana books a role in a Spanish soap opera with a smarmy lead actor Aldo (Leonardo García) and he attempts to seduce her, which he does successfully, but Robert finds out and dumps her and kicks her out of home where she moves in with Nora. Back to square one, Diana continues to audition until a casting agent gives her the number of model manager Richard Low (Ben Temple) and with his (somewhat dubious) contacts actually gets her constant work. She eventually books a big perfume contract and attracts the notice of big-time agent Michael Stein (Peter Coyote). He decides to represent Diana, but with the catch that she hooks up with massive star Steve Richards (Paul Sculfor) in a sham relationship to cover up that he is gay. Diana accepts and enjoys the fame, the career opportunities and the life that she now has but, there's always a catch... Never seen this movie until now and seems to be a companion piece to his previous movie Yo Soy La Juani starring Veronica Echegui and follows a lot of Bigas Luna's themes, but as with the fame game, this movie is quite superficial and hollow and it's conclusions way too obvious and done to death. Elsa Pataky is a better actress than her reputation and carries the movie well (she's also good in yesterday's movie Ninette), hell she's perfectly cast as the wannabe actress/star who's massively in over her head. But, there's nothing new here and I've gotta admit I prefer Luna's more melodramatic movies. And watch out for a cameo from Ana de la Reguera who cops a whopper of an insult involving donkey shows. Ouch!

I capped this from a recent TV screening (apparently August last year) and it came out quite well in HD which is interesting because a couple of days ago I junked a bunch of videos from a movie I recorded off the same channel. It's baffling how there's such a disparate level of quality on the one channel. Also, I'm scratching my head as to why Elsa wears nipple patches in her numerous nude scenes throughout the movie, also considering she has shown her breasts in a number of other movies. Ah well...

Spanish Update for 11 April...

The Spanish Update keeps on rolling today with a couple more movies from 2010-2011 and I think this may be the last of those from the forgotten pile. Heh, who knows, I'll probably find another small deposit from that period somewhere around here. Don't know a lot about Elisa K, but it is barely 70 minutes long and spends the first 40 minutes in black and white detailing what I assume is the lead character's childhood before Aina Clotet plays out the last 30 minutes in colour having what looks like a nervous breakdown. Fun! Ingrid also treads similar territory with a popular underground artist in self-destruct mode, mostly due to deep childhood issues. Some quite full on stuff in this movie and some very vivid images, not the least the devastating (and maybe just a little over-the-top) ending. Elena Serrano is very good in her film debut and makes her character stand out strongly in the movie, but the whole movie feels over-the-top without giving any real depth as to why the vivacious Ingrid is a such a willing trainwreck.

Going to mix it up with the next few Spanish updates with a wide range of stuff, even some newly released stuff!

Spanish Update for 10 April...

Today on the Spanish Update are a couple of movies featuring Carolina Bang, probably best known for her work in her husband Álex de la Iglesia's movies, including a film I absolutely love, Balada Triste de Trompeta (The Last Circus), that completely batshit crazy classic. Below she features in the loony heist comedy set mostly in Russia, La Daga de Rasputín (Rasputin's Dagger), featuring possibly her only onscreen nudity although I can stand to be corrected there. I mean, I hope there's more... Ahem. The other movie is a new release, Dos a la Carta (Menu for Two), a neat little comedy where about two men from different backgrounds who find out they are brothers when their father dies and are both bequeathed his rundown country restaurant which they decide to run together. The city boy finds out his pampered wife (Carolina Bang) has been less than faithful, which is great because that means he can pursue a local woman (Melani Olivares).

I still have a few more movies from 2010-2011 to get through and some movies featuring Fast and Furious regular Elsa Pataky. I've also have some new stuff and I've been (re)watching some stuff from the 90s that I might get around to capping if I get around to it.

Spanish Update for 8 April...

The Spanish Update continues still hanging around the 2010-2011 period with a couple of movies featuring Colombian actress Martina García, both of which are fairly depressing movies, La Mosquitera (The Mosquito Net) about 3 generations of a family failing apart and Rabia (Rage) about a man who takes refuge at the house where his girlfriend is a live-in maid without her knowledge after he kills his boss in a fit of rage. I really like Martina, especially good in La Cara Oculta and doesn't seem to mind getting naked either. Seeing Emma Suárez below reminds me that I should look into getting a copy of La Ardilla Roja (The Red Squirrel), she looked fantastic in that movie.

Spanish Update for 7 April...

With things a little slow at the moment, I did a bit of checking around to see what I had to cap and found a whole bunch of Spanish/Latin stuff floating around and quite a bit of stuff from 2010-2011 that I just never got around to. So, it's either deleted them completely or cap them first, so I've spend the past few days flicking through or watching a whole bunch of movies for an impromptu Spanish update, which I haven't technically done since December 2013. Today begins with 7 movies from 2010-2011 that I basically neglected which includes one Mexican movie as well, Perras (Bitches), an interesting movie about 10 teenage school girls doing very bad things with one doing an even worse thing. Australian Classics for 2 April...

Haven't done a Classic in a little while and things are a bit slow around here at the moment, so might as well enter the vault and cap something. Today will be a two-for, with two different versions of Wide Sargasso Sea, the 1993 Australian movie and the 2006 British TV movie.

Wide Sargasso Sea is a sultry drama set in Jamaica about the part French, part English Antoinette (Karina Lombard), who is deigned to marry an Englishman, Edward Rochester (Nathaniel Parker) or lose the house she inherited from her parents. Rochester is reluctant to come to Jamaica from England, but even though he is part of a well-off family, he is penniless, so he meets Antoinette and at first, they seem to get along well, even with Rochester struggling in his new environs. But, two things happen that will change all that. An opportunistic native named Daniel Cosway (Ben Thomas) tells Rochester of Antoinette's past, which she has been lying to him about. And Rochester receives a letter from home telling him his brother is dead and the family fortune is his. Rochester becomes restless and more aggressive and resentful towards Antoinette who still loves him, but the longer Rochester stays, the worse their marriage becomes. Based on the novel by Jean Rhys who based the novel on characters from Jane Eyre and is sort of a prequel to that book, Wide Sargasso Sea is not a bad little movie, very sultry and erotic, but when things go bad, they really go bad. Ably directed by John Duigan (The Year My Voice Broke, Flirting, Sirens), who seems to be in his wheelhouse with the tone of the tale, this is a very cynical look at a bad relationship that is forced upon its participants and both leads are quite good with some good support from the actors playing the house help. A far superior version than the British TV movie.

And with an Australian movie, there's barely an Australian actor in the movie. Rachel Ward (technically Australian I s'pose) briefly plays Antoinette's mother while Naomi Watts briefly turns up as an aristocratic daughter, possibly getting the role because she was in Duigan's previous film, Flirting. Surprised that Thandie Newton doesn't playing one of the house help as she was in a fairly notorious relationship with Duigan in this period. It's funny, I'd never seen Wide Sargasso Sea before this viewing, but I must've seen that trailer at the front of that many VHS movies back in the 90s and I could swear it had nudity in the trailer, but don't remember conclusively. But, that trailer was a staple back in the day.
