Update for 31 May...

For the 90s update today, here's a couple of movies from the late 80s. Anyway, Cool Blue is a fairly obscure romantic drama where Woody Harrelson meets a girl (Ely Pouget) and instantly falls for her, spends the night with her, then she disappears and he can't find her and he spends the next couple of months trying to find her and producing the best art of his career that finally gets him the recognition he always wanted. Just as he is about to hit the big time, she comes back into his life and he must decide between fame and fortune and the girl. Pretty simple stuff and nothing spectacular, but it does have Hank Azaria as his best friend who tries out a few Simpsons' voices. But, the movie is obscure for a reason, it just ain't that memorable.

Watched Vampire's Kiss for the first time when it played on TV a week or so back and decided I should probably cap that movie. So here we are. And man, Nicolas Cage is so magnificently over-the-top in this movie it's hard not to wonder what everyone around him was thinking. The whole final act when he's completely lost his mind is just plain nuts. Didn't realise Jennifer Beals was in it and probably the main reason why I capped the movie, but those breast patches she wears in the scenes below ain't the most subtle thing I've seen.

Update for 27 May...

Today's 90s update is from the 1997 David Lynch directed mystery Lost Highway and I gotta say when I saw it in cinemas back in the day I had no idea what was going on and a recent rewatch hasn't helped. There's some great stuff with Robert Loggia (that road rage scene is pretty funny) and the soundtrack is very 90s but is still really good, but the whole two Patricia Arquettes and body swapping stuff, yeah, I got no idea. Strange, as I love Lynch's next movie Mulholland Drive and mostly understand it. Ah well, at least there's plenty of nudity from Patricia Arquette and a good scene from Natasha Gregson Wagner. Lynch is always good with the nudity...

Update for 26 May...

Another couple of 90s movies including the 1995 spy thriller Bad Company, a pretty decent movie where Ellen Barkin and Laurence Fishburne plays spies who work for a private company that blackmails prominent individuals who then fall in love with one another. But when one of their blackmailings goes wrong, they set about covering their arse and getting their own share which means that nobody can trust anyone. Remember watching it back in the day and I'm not sure it was released in cinemas in Australia, but I saw it on VHS and quite liked it. It's a very well made thriller and Barkin and Fishburne are really good and there's some surprisingly sexy and nasty moments throughout that give it an extra edge. Just realised where I'd seen Michelle Beaudoin before and it was in Sabrina, The Teenage Witch, where she played Sabrina's best friend for a while. It's a show I've watched way too much of, I shouldn't admit this...

Update for 24 May...

The 90s movies don't stop with another bunch of movies today. Never heard of Free Money, which turned out to be a black comedy about a psychotic prison governor nicknamed The Swede (Marlon Brando in his second last movie who's now the size of a house) whose underage twin daughters 'get pregnant' at the same time to two local knuckleheads (Charlie Sheen and Thomas Haden Church) and The Swede pushes the knuckleheads into a dual shotgun wedding with the daughters under strict conditions. Except neither of the twins are pregnant and it's all a ruse. The Swede treats the knuckleheads like crap so Charlie Sheen hears of a train with soon-to-be discarded money coming through the town and he convinced Thomas Haden Church to rob it with him. Of course it all goes wrong for the two of them and The Swede just makes their lives even more miserable. Definitely influenced by Fargo except way less violent and made in Canada with an American lead cast and not a bad little movie with Brando seemingly enjoying playing a complete bastard. It's from that period where Charlie Sheen went by Charles Sheen and made a bunch of movies with Poison lead singer Bret Michaels (who produced Free Money), just before he became a TV star. And interesting to see a movie with actual twins in decent roles and amusing that one twin shows her breasts and the other is reluctant to do so... Worth a look if you're into those 90s crime black comedies which were all the rage after Fargo.

Update for 17 May...

Still the 90s with the 1993 Spanish drama from director Julio Medem (Lucía Y El Sexo, Caótica Ana, Habitación en Roma, Ma Ma, Lovers of the Arctic Circle). Have been meaning to see this movie for a while, not easy to find as it's not available locally, but I found a HD copy. Pretty simple plot, a suicidal man witnesses a woman have an accident as he's about to jump and he ends up saving her and then convinces her that she's his girlfriend, so much so that brings her on holiday with his family. The movie stretches it's amnesia plot to the edge of incredulity and Medem would go on to make better movies than this but there are definitely signs of what's to come including plenty of sex and nudity. I'll try and find Medem's next movie, the almost forgotten Earth, which has some good nudity from Suárez, but even better from Silke. But that's been a tough movie to find a decent copy of. If only I had a time machine back to the 90s and grab it when it played on SBS back in the day. Seems like a good use of time machine.

Update for 16 May...

Another three 90s movies and again I hadn't seen either of them before now. The Hand That Rocks The Cradle is a solid and slightly unnerving thriller with a pretty decent villain from Rebecca De Mornay, whose nastiness escalates slowly but methodically. Also stars a very young Madeline Zima, so time really does go so fast. Revenge is a solid but fairly stock standard revenge thriller from Tony Scott that is not that dissimilar from his other revenge thriller Man On Fire, well the story line anyway, both couldn't be further apart aesthetically. Interesting that in a couple of sex scenes have nudity from both Madeleine and a body double, which doesn't happed too often.

Update for 14 May...

Three more 90s movies for today's update. Never seen The Lawnmower Man before, but I picked up the Director's Cut which is an amazing 40 minutes longer than the theatrical release and they must've taken to it with a butcher's knife because the Director's Cut is a pretty solid movie that doesn't seem too long. Not a bad movie which has seemingly taken a battering over the years mainly due to it's sometimes hokey virtual reality scenes, but I remember virtual reality from that time and it was kinda hokey. Or maybe the director's cut is a just a better movie.

Haven't seen Consenting Adults in a while but it was a staple on Channel 7 up until recently, must've played over 100 times just as filler late at night. I broke down and watched once, can't remember when, probably because of the promise of nudity and hadn't really thought about it since. Rewatching it now and while the set up is fine, once the murder is committed the movie turns into a nonsensical farce becoming more ludicrous to the point where Kevin Spacey starts shooting up the place with an Uzi. Weren't they just suburbanites before the murder? Absolutely rubbish... Anyway, Rebecca Miller quit acting not longer after and became a writer/director, making movies like Personal Velocity, The Ballad of Jack and Rose and The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, a couple of which I've capped.

More 90s movies and despite capping Rachael Leigh Cook in everything from 2000-2005, I never got around to watching, let alone capping She's All That back in the day. No idea why I missed this seminal teen movie as I watched (and probably capped) pretty much every other one that was released. Fairly simple story that never really reaches great heights and constantly confuses what Freddie Prinze Jr's character is supposed to be. Is he a jock or a nerd in disguise? It's never really clear why he's even popular as the movie spends the entire time trying to make him the nicest guy ever despite setting up a bet to score with the arty chick. I"m thinking way too much about this... Anyway, it's jam packed with actors who went on to be fairly big but then most of teen movies had casts like that (Get Over It, possibly the most forgotten teen movie from the period, has an amazing cast). I've gotta get around to redoing all those movies I capped Rachael in back in the day.

Update for 12 May...

The 90s have never ended with 3 more movies in today's update. Brainscan is a fairly decent tech is going to kill us all thriller that is very 90s, sometimes hilariously so, but still a good watch. Amy Hargreaves is still going strong, she has a pretty big role in 13 Reasons Why and turns up in Homeland from time to time plus various other things. Still does nude scenes too including Shame and How He Fell in Love (which I should cap at some stage). Higher Learning is a movie that has bafflingly come back into favour in the current political environment, so I suppose things don't change that much. It still has a bit of silliness, but the neo-nazi stuff is fairly relevant and on point. Freeway is one of those 90s movies where everything has to be extreme because why not and boy have those movies aged horrendously and Freeway is just another to add to list. Based incredibly loosely on Little Red Riding Hood, I don't remember Red Riding Hood going to jail but maybe that was in the original interpretation, but it leads to a laughably stupid scene involving Keifer Sutherland dressing up as Grandma. You don't have to follow it that closely, come on. Never saw the sequel which apparently never made the leap to DVD in Australia although it did seem to get a VHS release. The director was the flavour of the month for a while there but hasn't made anything since that baffling Gary Oldman as a dwarf movie Tiptoes 15 years ago.

Update for 10 May...

Still more 90s today with the Robert Altman's intertwining lives drama Short Cuts which is still pretty damn good despite some fairly poor scenes, but at over 3 hours, there's a chance some of it doesn't work or looks shonky. Plus there's always some pretty decent nudity if you get bored by the length of it. Oh and Huey Lewis's (fake) dick...

I capped Leprechaun 4: In Space a couple of years ago when I was capping it for Australian actress Rebekah Carlton. Don't have a copy of Leprechaun In The Hood but I don't think there's anything to cap from that and while Jennifer Aniston is in the first Leprechaun, there's not really much to cap from that movie of her.

Update for 5 May...

The 90s never ends here with today's update featuring the 1997 batshit crazy thriller Perdita Durango, directed by Spanish madman Álex de la Iglesia, a favourite of this site (other movies that I captured of his include Balada Triste de Trompeta (The Last Circus), Las Brujas de Zugarramurdi (Witching and Bitching), The Oxford Murders, El Bar and La Habitacion del Nino). Remember watching this movie when it was released and being completely baffled by it, particularly the performance by Javier Bardem, who's so grotesque in this movie. A recent rewatch reveals that it's very much a de la Iglesia movie but also feels like a 90s movie influenced by Tarantino with it's random extreme violence and gun play, although the animal/human sacrifice stuff is an odd twist. And the plot is just bizarre, something about two violent personalities fall for one another and decide to kidnap a couple of teenagers and have a little fun or sacrifice them or something. It never really makes a lot of sense as to why they kidnapped the kids but it makes up most of the movie. I'm not saying it's a bad movie, but it definitely seems like a movie of scenes in search of a coherent plot.

The apparent Bluray rip I got this from isn't the best although I have seen worse, but it's definitely in the bottom 10 per cent. It's not bad and a HD rip would not be much better but it definitely could be better quality. Who knows if there will be another high quality release.
